This week we formally farewell our Year 12 cohort with the assembly and Valete
Eucharist and dinner. For many this is a joyous time as they prepare to leave GMAS
and their formal years of schooling, and for others a sad time as they accept the large
change entering into their lives.
I would like to thank all the school staff, past and present for their personal contributions
into assisting these young adults in their journey to date. We wish them well in their
future endeavours and for those preparing for WACE examinations, our support and
encouragement to do their best.
Thank you to the Student Leadership Team, all those who have supported the school in
a voluntary capacity, and I trust that all will continue to be supporters of the school via
membership of the Old Georgians Alumni group.

Student Absentees
Welcome to our new leadership group from Year 11. They will assume the role in
assisting the student body for the remainder of the academic year and we look forward
to announcing their individual portfolios on Presentation Day, 9th December.
The Stage 7 build is nearly completed apart from internal flooring, minor adjustments
and landscaping. The whole build is a welcome addition to the school’s infrastructure
and will be enjoyed by many in the years to come. The Year 3 students have settled in
to their classrooms for Term 4, Administration, Accounts and Student Services are all
established, as are School Management over in the Western perimeter build
classrooms.
My thanks are extended to the School Council Building and Grounds committee for their
diligence and oversight of the build program, to Mr Pablo Sandor (Business Manager)
for project managing such a large scale development, bringing the project in under
budget and to such high specifications.
The official opening will take place on Foundation Day in 2015, however a preview of
the build will be made available to our community beforehand. Details on a date are yet
to be confirmed.
Congratulations to the new P&F Committee who were voted in at the AGM held
recently. Welcome to new members and thank you to those who are leaving the
committee, for your dedication and hard work for our School Community.

WORLD TEACHER’S DAY FRIDAY 31ST OCTOBER

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL
New Journey to start
Year 12s had the final school day at school on Friday. They met up with their House peers to
begin the day, completed paperwork (exit forms), cleared their lockers for the last time,
provided morning tea for the staff, then enjoyed their final assembly with years 3-6 and staff.
The final bell for them signalled their start to their next phase - completing exams and / or
finishing off certificates. They will return in the evening for their final Eucharist followed by a
special dinner shared with their parents and some staff. It is lovely to have witnessed their
growth, particularly the students who started in the Junior School and continued their schooling
in the Secondary School. They will be remembered fondly as the "small year cohort". They
have a very special bond with one another. We all wish them every success in their
endeavours. We hope they will continue their association with GMAS through the alumni. We
also look forward to hearing of their achievements and endeavours in the years to come. To
the Year 12s- Aim high and give everything your best. Enjoy the journey to come.
World Teacher's Day Friday 31st October
GMAS has many exceptional teachers. They are prepared to go that "extra mile" to support,
help and encourage our students. Sometimes we take for granted all of their wonderful work. It
would be a lovely gesture if you could take the time to thank your child's teacher and let them
know how much you appreciate their efforts. You do not have to do it this Friday, any day it is
lovely to receive such feedback. Please make the teachers feel "special" because the teachers
here at GMAS are indeed, a very "special" bunch.

Colours – at assembly this week the following Year 12 students were awarded Academic Colours or Honours for outstanding
achievement this year
Chloe Barnett – Academic Honours
Kane Jansen – Academic Colours
Ryan May – Academic Colours
Katherine Scott – Academic Honours
Well done to all these students on their achievements across the range of subjects they have
undertaken this year. Special mention also goes to Caitlin Telford who also qualified for
Academic Honours but had already achieved this level in Year 11.
Katherine also received an award from The Australian Institute of Engineers for Outstanding
Achievement in Engineering Studies
Award winners
Leadership – at assembly this week the Secondary School was encouraged to take opportunities to adopt leadership roles in
whatever situations they find themselves in. Its not about being in Year 12 (our "Leadership Group", or having a formal leadership
role with a badge, its about taking action where you see an opportunity to lead by example and use your talents and influence to
achieve a positive outcome. The students were shown a video by former Eagles Captain John Worsfold recounting a situation in
school where he took the lead in a situation where a teacher was being spoken to unfairly by a student. It is a very thought
provoking speech and can be viewed at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yh8QB59SiQA
As our Year 12 group moves on into their futures, I encourage all lower year groups to step up and take a role of leading by
example in their behaviour, achievement, appearance and to live inspiring lives that will also challenge those around them to rise
to the challenge of making a difference.
Careers in Agriculture - While many people think the Primary Industries and Agriculture are traditional, stuck in the past and lack
technology – they’re one of the fastest moving areas of new technology. We need to increase yield to feed our growing world
population. For example – check this out http://www.wired.com/2014/10/high-tech-vineyards/
It gives a nice overview of how technology is being integrated into today’s Agriculture industry (with a focus in Viticulture)
Currently there are many, many more jobs than we have Agriculture University graduates…so if you like agriculture, the outdoors
or are keen on developing or working with technology then perhaps start thinking about your Year 11 and 12 subject selections
and then studying these areas at University.
A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way and shows the way.

EARLY CHILDHOOD
Oh my goodness!! The weeks are flying by!
Classes are busy squeezing in as much learning as possible in between swimming lessons.
This week I have created a new EC oral language initiative by
including a discussion topic for parents to share with children.
Research shows that confident, independent oral language users go
on to be confident, independent Literacy learners. Have a chat to your
little ones about the topic, their answers may inspire and delight you. I
will continue these until the end of term. Let me know what you think.
LG ‐ 2 Discussion topic
I Am Special Because…. Next week 1M and PPM begin their two weeks of swimming lessons. It has been lovely to hear comments from staff about how
well behaved and organised our students have been at the pool. Well done everyone! I am so proud of the way you have
represented GMAS.
Kindy M enjoyed celebrating Grandparents Day this week and Kindy G will do the same on Monday. The students treated
grandparents to an afternoon tea and performance. It is a great opportunity for grandparents to see how education has changed in
Early Childhood over time and for the students to share their learning journey with their special extended family members.
Congratulations to Ms Black and Mrs Woods for organising such a beautiful event.

EARLY CHILDHOOD continued
I was fortunate to attend a Professional Development Day this week on the National Quality Framework (NQF).
The NQF introduces a new quality standard to improve education and care across long day care, family day care, preschool/
kindergarten, and outside school hours care.
The Need for a National Approach
Quality education and care shapes every child’s future and lays the foundation for development and learning. The early years are
critical for establishing self-esteem, resilience, healthy growth and capacity to learn.
Research shows quality education and care early in life leads to better health, education and employment outcomes later in life.
Children need quality care and attention that meets their individual needs. The two main influences on the quality of care are:
caregiver qualifications, and lower staff to child ratios. These factors are particularly beneficial for very young children.
Better Caregiver Qualifications
Substantial research shows higher qualified educators improve outcomes for children. The higher their qualifications, the greater
their understanding of child development, health and safety issues. These educators are better equipped to lead activities that
inspire children and help them learn and develop.
Educator to Child Ratios
Improving educator to child ratios allows staff to give more individual care and attention and contributes to better social and
learning outcomes for children. Educators are able to develop more effective and meaningful relationships with children, resulting
in more engaged, happy and relaxed individuals. In 2015 Kindergarten ratios are 1:10, which means each class will have one
teacher and two education assistants.
What the NQF means for Australian Families
The NQF is designed to give children the best possible start in life. It is a national system, designed to provide transparency and
accountability.

SUSTAINABILITY COMMITTEE
It’s National Water Week and GMAS have become more water wise by viewing a video
about “Groundwater”. This was followed by a class discussion about how we can preserve
and maintain this precious resource.
Our Junior Green Team have made posters to put in the bathrooms and around the drink fountains to encourage everyone to
make sure they “turn off the taps”. Members of the team are also speaking at our assemblies to encourage students to not waste
water.
Some of our Year 2, 3 and 4 students entered the poster competition held by Busselton Water that attracted 480 entrants from
schools in the area. Wanda Comrie from Busselton Water attended our Junior assembly to announce the winners of this
competition and look at the work of our Green Team during Water Week. Congratulations to Georgia Pickering who was the
winner of the Yr 3,4 category. She won a family pass to the Jetty Train and Observatory with 2 extra friends (this prize was kindly
donated by the Busselton Jetty) and a $50 iTunes gift card and Busselton Water pack. And because Georgia’s winning poster
was submitted by GMAS on her behalf, our school was rewarded with a $500 prize too!! What a fantastic bonus, just when we are
setting up our kitchen garden. This money will allow us to repair our reticulation and improve the soil quality of the garden.
Mackenzie Christian’s poster also received a Highly Commended in the same category. She won a Seed Sprouter with seeds and
a Busselton Water pack.
Thank you once again to Wanda Comrie and Busselton Water for this initiative and their ongoing support with educational
resources.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT
OUTDOOR EDUCATION
Scuba Camp
The Year 11 Outdoor Education class spent Term 3 preparing for a Scuba/Snorkeling camp that was held in Week 1 of Term 4.
They spent the first day diving the Jetty and sitting their assessment papers. On day 2, the group boarded the Dive Shed’s boat
out to the Swan Wreck. Here they dove to 18 metres. There was a very friendly school of Batfish here and the group dove around
the Crow’s Nest and through the Bridge. On the way back to the Marina, all students did a second Jetty dive/snorkel with their
buddy. This completed their final task and all were awarded with their Open Water Scuba Ticket. We were blessed with fantastic
weather, clear skies, no rain and a small swell.
Year 10 Outdoor Education
The Year 10 Outdoor Education has commenced swimming and snorkelling during their Tuesday class. All students need to ensure they bring bathers, towel, swim shirt and a plastic bag every Tuesday in Weeks 2,3,4 and 5. The Rottnest Camp is planned
for Week 6, Wednesday to Friday 19th - 21st November. Both classes have worked on the planning of this, completing a manual
assignment that has all the details needed to prepare. All permission slips were handed out Tuesday Week 1 and are due back
Wednesday Week 2. Along with these permission slips were an itinerary, menu plan and equipment list.

GMAS Cricket Report
U12 GMAS 1 Teal team: A good start for the boys restricting Vasse to 6/64 and then winning with 4/90. Highlights were dominant batting and running between wickets from Jimmy, Zac and Macky. Great bowling performances from Christian 1/3 off 4 and
Matt 2/9 off 3 and economical bowling and solid batting contributions from Evan and James. Well done to coach Greg O’Rielly
and manager Jasmine Scaddan on your first game.
U12 GMAS 2 Navy team: Best batting – Ben with 19 runs and a strong partnership with Angus from Yobs. Best fielding – Patrick
as wicket keeper with 2 caught behinds and Jacob in the field with 2 fantastic catches. Best bowling – Ben 2 overs 1 for 3; Patrick
2 overs 1 for 4. Ben and Patrick each bowled out the batsmen, all other wickets were catches. A big thanks to Luchea Robinson
(and Kelly from Yobs) for assisting with the scoring. Well done to coach Dan Anderson and manager Tara Doyle on your first
game.
U15 GMAS B: Won our first game which was against Dunsborough by 6 runs. This was an awesome effort with only 9 out of our
13 players available on the day. Well done to Ross Chambers and your team of helpers on your first game.
GMAS Basketball
This week saw our 23 basketball teams starting off the 2014/2015 season. Good luck to everyone. We have 1 spare place in
some of our teams if anyone is keen to join us: Under 14 girls, Under 16 girls, U18 girls. Let either Mrs Vogel or myself know if
you would like to play. One of our Under 12 girls teams that play on a Thursday is desperately in need of an umpire if anyone can
assist. There is a small remuneration for umpiring and you would have to have done the umpire course. Please let me know if
you can help.
Underwater Hockey
Saturday 20th October was the last selection trial for the State Underwater Hockey teams. The following students were chosen to
represent WA at the National Underwater Hockey Championships in NSW in January, 2015. Natalie Iredale (Yr 9) has been selected in the U/19 team, Ella Croft (Yr 8) has been selected in the U/15 team and James Iredale (Yr 7) has been selected in the
U/15 state development team.

was Warped”, presented a framed collage of photos from this year’s
show to Mrs Burns be displayed alongside “Man of Steel” and “Smithy” in
the MAC foyer. The Performing Arts Department intends this to be an
ongoing tradition in the school. In those three shows alone there have
been well over a hundred students involved and it is growing!!
