YEAR 7 2015 ORIENTATION DAY AND
PARENT EVENING
On Wednesday, 29 October our prospective Year 7
students for next year will be attending the College
to participate in various Orientation Day activities.
This is an opportunity to become even more
familiar with the features of a secondary school
campus and with the particular nature of Mater Dei
College.
The Orientation Day concludes with an information
evening for parents and students. The details have
been posted to families in recent weeks. There will
also be an Information Pack distributed at the
Parent Evening.
I look forward to the chance to meet with our
prospective students and their families on the
Orientation Day.
YEAR 12 VALEDICTION
Year 12 students are preparing for their Valediction
events this week.
On Wednesday afternoon the College student body
will be offering their best wishes to our Year 12
students at the Valediction Assembly. This is the
opportunity for the students in the other year
groups to congratulate our Year 12s on completing
their years of secondary education at Mater Dei
College.
Thursday is the last formal day for our Year 12
students and in the evening they will join family,
friends and staff at St Mary's Cathedral for the
Valediction Mass. This formal occasion celebrates
the graduation of Year 12 students from Mater Dei
College in the company of those who have been a
large part of their years of secondary schooling.
Yes, there are still the WACE exams to sit through
November, but as the routine of daily school life
comes to an end, we wish our Year 12 students all
the very best for their futures beyond Mater Dei
College.
AWARDS NIGHT
For your family calendar, this year's Awards Night will
be held at the College on Tuesday, 9 December. Please
keep this night free to participate in celebrating our
students' successes.
TERMS' NOTICE
I remind parents that if there is a thought to withdraw
their child from enrolment at Mater Dei College at the
end of this year, a term's notice must be given in
writing. If no term's notice is given, it is the College
policy that a full term's fees will be charged in lieu of
notice given.
Please contact our Enrolment Officer, Mrs Barbra
Moyle, if there is the possibility that your child may not
be returning next year.
TERM DATES
Students in Years 7-10 conclude this year's classes on
Friday, 12 December.

LEARNING MATTERS
SPECIAL EVENTS
We farewell our Year 12 students at the Graduation Mass
at the Cathedral on Thursday and welcome next year’s
Year 7 students at the Orientation Day next Wednesday.
Both groups face exciting experiences and we wish them
all God’s blessings at this time.
WACE examinations commence on Monday, 3

College is once again a Special Examinations Centre
utilising both the main hall and the Seminar Rooms and
the brick-paved parking adjacent to the Mercy Building.
We will be hosting students from a number of other
schools and colleges including Lake Joondalup Baptist

northern suburbs schools. Year 11 End of Year
Examinations will be held at the end of Week 7 with
Year 10 Examinations after that. Our Special
Anniversary Awards Evening is on Tuesday, 9
December at the Perth Concert Hall.
Finally, Year 7 – 9 students will soon be receiving
information about the Electives Selection process for
next year. Students will register their preferences via the
Subject Selection Online website which is currently
being prepared and will go live in the next fortnight.
STUDY SKILLS
1. Selectivity
The mind can absorb only a certain amount of new
material at a time. You can't learn everything about
everything. The solution, then, is to be selective. Choose
what's important. Learn the important things and then
build on that knowledge (basic background).
Here are some tips in choosing what's important.
 Look for clues when reading a textbook
assignment. Use a survey method before you
begin. Look at headings, graphics, and bold
print. Study the summary and review questions
before and after you read.
 During a lesson, listen for verbal clues such as
emphasis and repetition. Pay attention to nonverbal clues such as the teacher’s body
language and information written on the board
or given as handouts.
 Make yourself the test maker. Constantly ask
yourself, "If I were giving a test on this
material, what would I ask?"
 Making flash cards for information you need to
learn is an excellent way to employ this
principle.
2. Meaningful Organization
We usually remember only five to seven items at a time.
