Wednesday, October 22 2014: Term 4 Week 3
As part of our Sacred Heart Annual Improvement Plan for 2015 we
have created the following iSmart Goal to support us in our
implementation of this initiative:
Principal’s News
Dear Parents and Friends of Sacred Heart,
A big thank-you to the small group of parents (29) who attended
last night’s BYODD meeting in the school hall where we outlined
next year’s plans for extending our current Year 5 1:1 iPad
program into all Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 classes in 2015. It was terrific
that we had such a large complement of school staff at the
meeting and this is testament to just how committed we are at
Sacred Heart to this exciting initiative. The Year 5 children who
attended the meeting took great delight in sharing some of their
iPad learnings with parents just prior to the meeting and showed
no sign of nerves when put on the spot by their principal in the
course of the meeting!
While the parent numbers may have been small there was
certainly no shortage of good robust discussion and challenging
questions on a whole range of issues pertinent to the program,
including but not limited to – amount of screen time children will
be subjected to; potential ergonomic and posture problems; theft,
loss and security issues; will the children still use pen/cil and
paper? why can’t the school provide the iPads? where is the
quantitative research to say this improves educational outcomes?
how will the school ensure that any child without an iPad device
will not be disadvantaged?....I could go on. These and other
questions were all addressed by staff and Sydney CEO
representatives during the meeting. Last night’s presentation can
be viewed on the ‘BYODD’ page on our school website. Simply hit
the ‘BYODD’ tab which will take you to the link for the ‘BYODD’
website – there is a link, ‘presentations’ on the left hand side
menu. Part of this presentation provides some detailed feedback
on the recent online survey that was conducted – a big thank you
to all parents who completed the survey.
Essentially, as I outlined at last night’s meeting, what we are trying
to achieve is the following:
1.
2.
Designing learning spaces that enhance student and
teacher learning through our parent-funded ‘Classrooms
st
for the 21 Century’ initiative that will be successfully
completed by the end of 2014.
st
Resourcing and supporting our ‘Classrooms for the 21
st
Century’ initiative through the provision of today’s 21
century learning tools via our BYODD 1:1 iPad initiative.
Our aim articulates well with our learning vision
that is based upon the three key principles of
Achievement, Engagement and Wellbeing, all of
which rest upon the key foundational principle of
Relationships.
By the end of Term 1 2015 there is in place a Professional
Learning/Development Plan for all staff in relation to digital
learning technologies, especially iPads, so that teachers are able to
demonstrate knowledge and skills to engage all students in
contemporary learning in accordance with our SACRED Learning
model and the CEO iLearn model.
I will be communicating more about this exciting BYODD initiative
in forthcoming editions of HeartBeat and, in the meantime, I
encourage you to browse our BYODD site which has, inter alia, a
range of FAQs that will be of interest to many. We will also be
placing on the site an excellent research paper, covering the key
areas of recommended screen time and ergonomics and posture.
Our Year 5 classrooms will be holding an ‘Open Morning,’ to which
interested parents from Years K – 6 are invited, over the next few
weeks and the date will be communicated with you in next week’s
HeartBeat.
Wishing everyone a great week and thanking you for your ongoing
support for Sacred Heart which is greatly appreciated.

Head Class Mums & Class Mums for 2015
It’s hard to believe that we are now entering our final term of 2014
and coming to the end of our time as Head Class Mums. We have
really enjoyed it, and it’s been great getting to know so many more
parents as a result of it. We would like to thank Vince, the staff,
Sharon and Ingrid in the office and the P&F for all their help and
support over the last two years.
We would especially like to thank all the mums (& the dads of
course) who have co-ordinated each year’s major events,
communications, social events and volunteers.
It is amazing that so many of you give so much, and really are part
of what makes this school so special. We are pleased to hand over
the role of Head Class Mums next year to Cassie Scougall, Linda
Del Nin & Belinda Chard. They are a great bunch of ladies and
thank you so much to them for taking it on.
Now we have the Head Class Mums sorted it’s now on to Class
Mums for 2015. We know it’s hard to think about next year just
yet. But if you do find yourself able perhaps you might consider
being a class mum for your year! If so we would love to hear from
you. Please contact us on [email protected]. Looking
forward to hearing from you

Exemption from Attendance at School
Some important amendments to the Education Act 1990 have
resulted in significant changes and procedures governing school
attendance. Parents now wishing to exempt children from the
legal requirement to attend school for any length of time, must
apply to the Principal for an exemption. The Principal will
consider the application and decide whether to grant a ‘Certificate
of Exemption from Attendance at School.’ The Application for
Exemption from Attendance at School Forms are available from
the school office.
Anaphylaxis & Food Allergies
We have several children in our school who are severely allergic to
various varieties of nuts and certain foods. Their allergies are
actually life threatening, so we ask all parents to refrain from
sending their children to school with the following foods: nuts,
peanut butter sandwiches or dippers, nutella sandwiches or
dippers, muesli bars with nuts or nut-based products in them,
cakes or chocolate bars with whole or partial nuts in or on them,
satay flavoured noodles, meat or other products, chocolate coated
nuts, chocolate bars coated in or containing nuts (eg. Snickers or
Picnics). Please tell your child not to swap or trade their food with
others. Please also be mindful when sending in treats for your
child’s birthday. We prefer water iceblocks only. Many
sunscreens and lip balms contain certain nut oils which can also be
harmful to anaphylactic children.
Whole Day Absentees
As the attendance rolls are now electronic it is essential that if you
are late you or your child MUST sign in at the office before going
to the classroom. If you arrive after the starting time of 8.40am
they will be marked absent unless signed in at the office.
