FRIDAY 7 TH NOVEMBER 2014
After breakfast we head to the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem for an
exploratory tour of the museum. Founded in 1799, PEM is one of America’s
oldest and fastest growing museums. Its collections – many ranking among the
finest of their kind – exceed 1.8 million works of art and culture including Yin Yu
Tang, the only complete Qing Dynasty house located outside China.
Of special note, we will have the opportunity to experience a multi-disciplinary
installation by Michael Lin, a newly commissioned video work by Candice
Breitz and a photography exhibition featuring Jo Ractliffe. These installations
are organized by Trevor Smith, PEM’s Curator of the Present Tense, who invites
audiences to see the museum and its collections anew through the eyes of today’s
most exciting contemporary artists. Calder and Abstraction: From Avant-Garde
to Iconic organized by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Calder
Foundation, New York will be on view.
A private lunch will be held today at the museum.
Following lunch we journey to Edgewater House in Beverly Farms to see the
Horvitz Collection. Set on a stunning private beach on Boston’s North shore,
this 1920s private home is filled with fascinating collections of cinnabar
lacquer, contemporary Japanese ceramics, important Baroque paintings and
thousands of the most important French drawings in the world. The primarily
18th and early 19th century drawings are framed and installed in the house,
the office block and the picture room in an overwhelmingly luscious evocation
of 18th century France. We will be hosted for our visit by collectors Jeffrey
Horvitz and his wife Carol, who together formed this world-class collection
over the past 30 years.
Dinner this evening will be in one of Boston’s finest restaurants.

SATURDAY 8 TH NOVEMBER 2014
After breakfast today we head for a private tour of the Museum of Fine Arts
with Edward Saywell, Chair of the Linde Family Wing for Contemporary Art.
Saywell will focus his tour on the contemporary wing of the Museum but
we will also have an opportunity to see some of the other galleries of what
is regarded as one of the most comprehensive art museums in the world,
boasting one of the finest collections of American, Asian, and European art in
the world. Following the tour we will lunch in the Museum’s award winning
restaurant, Bravo, and then have an opportunity to see what promises to be
one of the great exhibitions of the year: Goya: Order and Disorder. Organized
by the MFA, it is the largest exhibition of Francisco Goya’s work in the United
States for more than quarter of a century and will highlight the masterful
ingenuity of this titan of eighteenth-century art.
This afternoon we head to the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum with its newly
constructed wing designed by Renzo Piano. The Gardner Museum displays an
enviable art collection of world importance, including works that rank among
the most significant of their type. Isabella Stewart Gardner collected and carefully
displayed a collection comprised of more than 2,500 objects—paintings,
sculpture, furniture, textiles, drawings, silver, ceramics, illuminated manuscripts,
rare books, photographs and letters—from ancient Rome, Medieval Europe,
Renaissance Italy, Asia, the Islamic world and 19th-century France and America.
Built to evoke a 15th-century Venetian palace, the Museum itself provides an
atmospheric setting for Gardner’s inventive creation.
This evening, we are invited to the exclusive opening gala of the newly renovated
and expanded Harvard Art Museums, designed by Renzo Piano. Alongside
the museums’ renowned collections will be an inaugural special exhibition,
Mark Rothko’s Harvard Murals, featuring five paintings commissioned by
Harvard University and a majority of the artist’s related studies on paper
and canvas, all produced between 1961 and 1962. This new presentation uses
groundbreaking digital projection technology to recapture the original hues
of the five faded paintings, which have rarely been seen by the public since they
were removed from display in the 1970s.
