Jane Duncan is a Professor in the Department of
Journalism, Film and Television. Before that, she
held a Chair in Media and the Information Society
at Rhodes University. Before moving into academia,
she had a background in civil society, having
worked for the Freedom of Expression Institute
from 1994 to 2009. She served as the Institute’s
Executive Director from 2002. She has also worked
in the community arts sector, including at the Afrika
Cultural Centre and the Funda Centre. She has
three postgraduate degrees, and has written widely
on freedom of expression, the right to privacy, social
movements and the right to protest, and media
policy. She is author of The rise of the securocrats
(Jacana, October 2014). She has a monthly column
for the South African Civil Society Information
Service and writes regularly for the media.
