Pastor Paul writes…
Our “Reaching Up, Reaching In, Reaching Out” Anniversary Town Hall Event on
October 19th was a wonderful celebration of God’s blessings at Zion over the last year!
The many sacrificial pledges made to our spiritual growth campaign so far total over
$530,000 and already more than $175,000 in cash and securities has been donated!
Initial expenditures have included equipment, supplies, and professional music
leadership for our new 11:00 Contemporary/Informal Worship service, and marketing
and outreach through KFAX radio, Montclair Village Association membership,
newspaper advertising, and online promotion. In addition, many of our recent activities and events at
Zion support our spiritual growth campaign, as evidenced by the increase in worship visitors, interest in
membership at Zion, and the growth of our Confirmation Class, which is now the largest class in several
years and includes four students of families not yet members!

The Book of Exodus is the
second Book of the Bible which
is part of the “Pentateuch” the
Greek name for the first 5 Books
of the Bible.
Exodus records the Lord’s
miraculous deliverance of his
people from their Egyptian oppressors and is a wonderful presentation on the Doctrine of the
Trinity.
We encourage you to come
join us for the start of this Study
on November 9th.
Informal Praise &
Worship
Our second service is
beginning to outgrow the
Garden Room. A screen can
now be set up in the sanctuary
where the second service will
be held on the 5th Sunday
which is also communion.
Teams of volunteers are
helping with the set up and take
down.
Rob Apger has been a joyful
addition to many of our
services.

Kid’s Church continues to
meet during the contemporary
service. This is a time to praise
God in our own way through
songs, Bible story, dance, crafts,

Sunday School
At the sound of the bell
(9:45AM), all children PreKindergarten through 6th grade
gather in the church for the
opening time. During opening,
students are recognized for
special achievements, birthdays,
and other milestones in their
life. After opening the students
will move to a classroom for a
combine age lesson. Who wants
to be the bell ringer? Ask Mr
Harger.

Group (ZAG)

difficulties at night.
Participant families set aside
Saturday, December 6th and

practice. We will practice from
9:00 am – 12:00 noon. We will
also practice during Sunday
School time (9:45-10:45) on
Sunday, December 7 and Sunday,
December 14th.

Senior Youth
Bible Class
We meet each Sunday morning to share with each other, to
laugh together, to support one
another, and to study God’s
Word. Come join us at 10:00am
in the youth room.
Junior and Senior High Youth
Thank you to everyone who dropped of items at our e-waste
event. A big thank you to the youth that came and stayed a long
time. We had a fairly full truck, but not more than would fit this
time. We have another E-waste day on January 3rd, 2015.
We are going bowling after church on Sunday, November 9th. We
will gather in the parking lot and head for food and then to bowling
in Castro Valley. Bring money for your lunch and bowling.
($3.50 per game, $3 for shoes)

Zion noiZ
Zion noiZ, how is it pronounced? Noiz is noise. Where does the new title Zion noiZ come from? Several
years ago, the 8th grade class was creating a school newspaper. The students were working on names for it and
Carolyn Dal Ferro suggested Zion Noiz. The title has stuck with me and some day I knew I could be used here. Thank you Carolyn.
Zion noiZ, contains the information we want to make noise about, to celebrate, to invite others, to tell the
world. Notice the way that it is capitalized, as if a reflection, this reminds us that we are a reflection of Zion: what
we do and how we conduct ourselves all reflect upon Zion.

Movie Night: NOAH
Saturday, November 18th 6:30 pm
“In the beginning, there was nothing.” So starts this version of
the story centered on Noah, the man entrusted by God to save the
innocent animals of Earth as the rising floodwaters cleansed the
planet of mankind’s evil. As the telling continues, we learn how
Adam and Eve’s sins have passed down through generations
through their sons Cain and Abel, and how the descendants
of their righteous sibling Seth were entrusted with defending
creation. One day, while foraging in the country, a descendant of
Seth, Noah, sees his father slain by a descendant of Cain. In the
process, Noah’s birthright is stolen from him.
Decades later, as a father of three, Noah experiences a
vision foretelling the great flood that will wash over the Earth,
destroying every living thing that stands on the soil. That vision
leads Noah to seek out his grandfather, Methuselah, in order to
understand his mission. When a second vision reveals that Noah
is to construct a massive ark designed to shelter every living
animal during the great flood, Noah, his wife Naameh, their
three sons Shem, Ham, and Japheth, and their adoptive sister Ila
immediately begin construction on the vessel.

It is time to update our member
contact information once again!
Why, you might ask, does the
Outreach Committee care about
member contact information?
Shouldn’t that committee worry
only about those outside the congregation? Well, frankly, no. The
most valuable and successful outreach is through our congregation’s
own members. Every one of you
is a fabulous source of outreach to
others in your daily life. And we’d
like to be able to reach you to tell
you about events and inform you
of church happenings, not only for
your own information, but also so
that you can easily pass that info
on to your neighbors, friends, and
family. There’s a wonderful overlap here between outreach and
“in-reach”. Updating our member
contact info is good for the whole
church.
Plus, we’d like to be able to give
you more timely information, in
a more cost-effective yet highly
efficient way. Thus, we’d also like
to emphasize electronic/digital
communications. Yes, that means
e-mail. And we have found that our
list of e-mail addresses definitely
needs to be updated as well.
Please be on the lookout for contact update sheets. We hope to soon
have these sheets at church events
so that you can just jot down your
current contact info. We’ll make
sure to update the church’s records.

info there. Once you have accessed
Facebook (www.facebook.com),

yet, then by all means, take this

Reaching Out To Others
THANKSGIVING
DAY, THURSDAY,

THANKSGIVING GROCERY
COLLECTION
For over 35 years, Zion has celebrated Thanksgiving with a grocery collection to share what we have with those less fortunate.
With the economy still fragile, and many people still out of work,
the need is great. So, once again we are asking for your help and
support for our friends in the Oakland community.
Please bring 2--3 bags/boxes of non-perishable groceries to
church on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 2014. If you will be
out of town for Thanksgiving, you may place your groceries in the
specially marked barrels in the Narthex. If you do not have time
to shop, you may still participate by placing a donation in the offering plate. Please make sure it is clearly marked “THANKSGIVING GROCERIES”. The groceries will be shared with City Team
Ministries in Oakland and our sister Congregation St. Peter’s in
San Leandro. Any cash donations will be given to Pilgrim Lutheran Church for their daycare meal program for the children. There
is a $500 match available from Thrivent.
Watch for grocery store specials to increase your giving power.
Please take the following list with you to the store as a reminder

Ladies Aid News and Notes
The Ladies Aid Christmas in July boutique was successful. We still have some of Ruth Uhle’s delicious jams and a goodly amount of walnuts. Speaking of walnuts have you thought about buying
some and freezing them for next year? With the drought and hot weather if there are any nuts the price
will be high. The weather has killed almond trees.
Our next boutique is November 9th and then again on December 14th. If you want to buy any jam,
nuts,or other items see any of the Ladies Aid members. We will be happy to help you.
The next Ladies Aid get together is November 19th at 11:30 am in the Conference Room. All ladies
are welcome. Bring your lunch and join us!

This Fall we studied Paul’s Letter
to the Philippians and we are
currently studying Paul’s letter
to the Galatians. Our next study
will be of Isaiah! We also celebrate
Holy Communion at the end of
the class on the first Wednesday of
each month. The last Wednesday of
each month we watch and discuss
a Bible study video, followed by
lunch at Fenton’s. Coffee and treats
are provided every Wednesday and
all are welcome to participate! Join
us as often as you can as we grow in

DISNEY MUSEUM
Seniors will travel to the Walt
Disney Family Museum on
Thursday, November 13th to tour
the 40,000 square feet of delightful
imagination housed in two historic
buildings in the Presidio of San
Francisco. Senior general admission

We will meet at Zion at 9:30 a.m.

2015 OFFERING
ENVELOPES &
SIMPLY GIVING
On Sunday, November 30th
the 2015 offering envelopes will
be made available for members
to pick up. Please continue to use
your present envelopes through the
remainder of this calendar year. All
charitable gifts must be received
by December 31st in order to be
credited as part of the 2013 tax
year. Our weekly envelopes help us
to fulfill the spirit of the St. Paul’s
words in 1 Corinthians 16:1-2:
“Now about the collection for God’s
people…On the first day of every
week, each one of you should set
aside a sum of money in keeping
with his income.” Our giving is a
joyful part of our worship!
Note: Our members using Simply Giving also receive envelopes.
This provides an easy way to give an
“over and above” thank offering in
addition to your regular electronic offering whenever you wish to
do so! You may also put an empty
envelope in the offering plate on
any given Sunday and simply print
“Simply Giving” on the outside.
This way you know that you are
giving your offering electronically
and, using an envelope, you will
still be participating in the collection of the regular Sunday offering!
