Wellington’s Got Talent Final
The 2014 edition of Wellington’s Got Talent wound up last
week after months of heats. We would like to extend our
warmest congratulations to our winners for 2014.
In first place (and receiving a $100 gift card), was the senior
band K5VIBES (Sam Livera, Josh Leeson, Huy Nguyen,
Eddie Taing, and Adrian Frichittavong). Soloist Sandy Ouch
of Year 10 took out second place (winning a $50 prize).
Rounding out the podium was the up and coming Year 9 band
(Khalid Barelvi, Alvin Yan, and Bradley Rich, ably supported
by Callum Kelly) who secured the third prize of a $25 gift
card.
Congratulations to all who performed this year! The standard
was incredibly high and we look forward to uncovering new
talent in 2015!

Students at this College value the opportunities presented to them as they strive to achieve their best in a
wide range of endeavours.
The Visual Arts Expo
The Visual Arts Exhibition officially opened in the evening of 14 October, highlighted the creativity and
depth of talent of our senior students in the various art forms that they have worked in throughout the year.
It was a wonderful exhibition and all who viewed the displays were indeed impressed. Congratulations to
Mr Bare and the other members of staff involved in coordinating the event, and to the students whose
work was on display, well done.
Spring Concert
The breadth of talent amongst our Instrumental, Dance, and Music students was showcased at the Spring
Concert held in the evening of 15 October. Students from Years 7 to 12 performed a variety of items to an
appreciative audience. The sound and lighting crew, together with several staff, put in many hours of
preparation. Well done to everyone involved, but in particular to Mrs Tunnicliffe who coordinated the program.
Relay for Life
Congratulations to Mr Whyte and our House Leaders for the organisation and running of the event, 'Relay For Life', during Thursday 16
October. It was a very successful event, despite the early inclement weather, both in
terms of student participation and the amount of money raised for the Cancer
Council. Thank you to all involved on the day, both students and staff.
Farewell to Year 12 Leaders
Last week I had the privilege of hosting a 'thank you' lunch for our Student Leaders
(right). On behalf of the College we thanked our Year 12 Leaders for their
wonderful contribution and service over the year and wished each one of them
success not only in their upcoming exams, but for the years that lie ahead.
Cultural Luncheon
This week I, together with some other members of staff, had the privilege of
enjoying a Cultural Feast Luncheon prepared and served by the Year 11 Food

Victorian State Spelling Competition
On Tuesday 16 October, our two top spelling students went all
the way to Moe (along with Mrs Scott) to compete in the Vicspell
State Spelling Competition Grand Final. Both Leeanne Tan of
Year 7 and Junior James of Year 8 had already won the Casey
District finals back in August. We are so very proud of our two
students just for qualifying for the state final.
We are extremely proud to announce that our very own Leeanne
Tan won the Year 7 State Championship title for 2014! Leeanne
received a large glass trophy for her efforts and a large Oxford
dictionary. There was some strong competition from many
schools and some extremely difficult words such as
“restaurateur”” and “ricochet”. To add to the nerves, the WIN
news team were there filming the event, along with the
Department of Education.
Junior James also achieved a highly commendable 3rd place in
the Year 8 state final, winning a large Oxford dictionary. His
mother had travelled all the way to Moe to watch her son
compete and was very proud of her son's efforts.
Wellington Secondary College is extremely proud of both Junior
and Leeanne. We can't believe we have a state champion at our
school! We look forward to entering our top spelling students in
the competition again next year.

Health and PE Week
Last week was Health and Physical Education
week and we had some fun activities and guest
speakers to help celebrate. On Tuesday lunchtime
we had a Basketball 3 point shoot-out that was
hotly contested across all year levels.
Congratulations to our winner Rustem Ameti of
Year 8. On Friday lunchtime we had an open beep
test for all students with our highest result from
Jack Scott-Smith also of year 8 with an
outstanding achievement of 13.4.
The Year 7 students on Wednesday had the
privilege of listening to our guest speaker Melissa
Tapper of the Victorian Institute of Sport. Melissa
was the first Australian Paralympian to make an
able bodied Commonwealth Games team. She
was selected for the Glasgow games this year and
won a bronze medal in table tennis. The students
really appreciated her words, and Melissa was
kind enough have a hit with some of our lucky
staff and students.

Acceleration Programs
As part of Acceleration Program, Jessica Diaz, Marcus Lee, and Kanishka Nirmalan of 9K were
invited to take part in an unique experience at the Swinburne University of Technology. The
program was designed to extend their interest in science and further develop critical thinking
skills. Here is what Kanishka has to say about the program.
Mrs Rangarajan
On 16 September Jessica Diaz, Marcus Lee, and myself had the pleasure of taking part in the
ConocoPhillips Science Experience which concluded three days later on 18 September. This
experience gave us the opportunity to extend our scientific knowledge and meet passionate
individuals who shared a mutual interest in
developing scientific skills and abilities. This
program was hosted by the Young Scientists of
Australia (YSA) who showed enthusiasm and
encouragement.
Australian Maths
The program consisted of a wide range of interactive
activities where we learnt about the different aspects
of Science over the course of three days. Some of the
activities we took part in were applied mathematics,
Lego robotics, chemistry in action, astronomy and
constructing an electronic die.
We would like to thank Mrs Rangarajan, Mrs Gibson,
as well as the entire school for organizing, supporting
and selecting us to take part in this fantastic program
in which we all enjoyed, learned and developed from.

Eastern

Athletics
Did You
Know?
Today we celebrate a number of great performances from the students at
Wellington Secondary College on the Athletics Track.
On Friday 10 October, twenty students represented Wellington and the
Monash Division at the Eastern Metropolitan Region (EMR) Athletics
held at Knox Athletics Track. I would like to congratulate all members
of this team (our largest ever at this level) for their efforts in reaching
such a high level of competition. It is important that we personally
acknowledge students who performed exceptionally well on the day
and were rewarded with a Gold, Silver or Bronze medal. These students
were Natalie Wagan, Sandy Le, Declan McBean, and Brian Ong.
Together they collected 8 medals.
Declan McBean (left) won two events at the EMR competition which qualified him to represent the college at the
State Athletics Championships at Albert Park on Friday 17 October. Declan performed extremely well again with
6th place in the 13yr male Discus and a magnificent 3rd place in the 13yr male Javelin.
As the Director of Sport & Houses I would like to congratulate the student body for the great support they have
shown the Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics school teams in 2014. All of these teams at the Monash, EMR
and State levels of competition have been our largest in over 6 years and as a result of this increased participation
we have seen improved team spirit and motivation which has resulted in some great performances at all levels of
competition.
I encourage you all to become a member of the Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics Teams in 2015 so that we
can continue to improve participation rates and celebrate the success that comes with being a part of these teams.

Food Technology Recipe of the Week
The Year 8 Food Technology students participate in practical classes every week for Semester
duration. A well-received recipe was 'Shepherd's Pie'. Students with specific dietary needs are
always catered for and our dedicated team prepare alternative recipes with modifications made to
the ingredients so that successful outcomes are met by all our students at Wellington. Our Year 8
students were also required to preview an online video tutorial on Moodle in their own time, which
demonstrated step by step instructions on how to make Shepherd's Pie.
This tutorial gave students an insight of the use of ingredients, application of processes and
cooking methods. Students had the flexibility of watching the tutorial at their own pace and
prepared them for making the recipe in their designated class time at school. An online quiz gave
their teachers an insight of the prior learning taking place. The tutorials enabled students to come to
class with confidence fostering independent lifelong learning. Other online video tutorials in the
Year 8 curriculum include, Salad Roll-Up, Fruit Kebab, Fruit Scone Roll and Pizza.

a Year 11 student who has demonstrated a conscientious
commitment to their studies throughout the year.
Anthony received a cheque for $2000 to assist him with
his Year 12 education costs. The College congratulates
Anthony and extends our thanks to the Mulgrave Country
Club for the enormous financial support they provide to
schools each year.

Wellington enjoys a close partnership with Monash University. Included in this is
the Access Monash Mentoring Scheme. Year 10 students are invited to apply and go
through a selection process, with those chosen being mentored by a Monash
University student throughout their VCE.
Mr Blaikie and Ms Huffer were very pleased to attend the graduation dinner for
three of our Year 12 students – Krissi Ear, Yuan Jong and Jessica Tran. The event
was held at the Monash University Caulfield Campus and celebrated the
commitment made by our students, who have participated in the program for the last

Immunisation
You Know? Update
In 2015 three major changes to the vaccine program will impact on parents of secondary school students:
1.
The Monash Council's immunisation service may contact you about the secondary school vaccine program. Schools have been
authorised to provide parent contact details to local councils for this purpose. Contact the school via the Compass parent portal
or by phone on 9547 6822 by 28 February 2015 if you do not want your contact details given to the Monash Council.
2.
In 2015 only, the vaccine that protects against diphtheria, tetanus and whooping cough will be offered to all students in Years 7,
8, 9, and 10. From 2016, this vaccine will be offered to Year 7 students only. This will provide earlier protection from these
diseases.
3.
The time-limited human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine program for Year 9 boys was completed in December 2014. HPV
vaccine will continue to be offered to all students (both male and female) in Year 7 from 2015.
Look out for the vaccine consent form/s coming home from school with your child. You need to read, complete and return the form/s
regardless of whether your child is being immunised at school.
To learn more about the changes, the diseases, the vaccines, or how you can prepare your child for vaccination go to
