The Governor General’s Gold Medal – Technology,

highest ranking graduate student graduating from
Concordia University.
Dr. Ajorlou defended his Ph.D. dissertation
Connectivity Preservation in Distributed Control of
Multi-Agent Systems under the supervision of Dr. Amir
Aghdam from the Department of Electrical and
Computer Engineering. His doctoral research has
resulted in new understanding of the role of the
connectivity of the agents in a system and the
development of a novel and practical control strategy
which is more effective than any other solution
currently available to the network connectivity
problem. His control design technique is highly
unique within the field and is the best method, to date,
for maintaining the connectivity in control of multiagent systems.
Dr. Ajorlou is a recipient of a NSERC Postdoctoral
Fellowship and is continuing his research at the
University of Pennsylvania, where he has taken up a
postdoctoral position.

Advanced Multilinear Data Analysis and Sparse
Representation Approaches and their Applications
under the co-supervision of Dr. Tien D. Bui and Dr.
Ching Y. Suen from the Department of Computer
Science and Software Engineering. Dr. Luu’s
dissertation advances the state of the art in
Multilinear Analysis for data analysis, one of the
most mathematically challenging topics in pattern
recognition and machine learning. His research has
led, among other applications, to the development
of a more effective technique for age progressing in
digital images of faces, which has made a vital
contribution to national security as well as for
finding missing children.
Dr. Luu is currently a postdoctoral fellow at at
CyLab Biometrics Center, Carnegie Mellon
University in Pittsburgh, where he is training at one
of the world’s leading laboratories to develop very
large-scale machine learning algorithms, state-ofthe-art computer vision approaches and advanced
facial recognition techniques.
