Rodeno WWS Co-Founder, former VP of Marketing, Domaine Chandon and former CEO, St. Supéry Founded: 1990 Wondering how it all got started back then? From founders Michaela Rodeno and Julie Johnson: “We were in a conference in Sonoma and during a break there were three or four of us standing around complaining about all the negative press the wine industry was getting, and how frustrating it was that none of the wine industry organizations were doing anything about it,” said Rodeno. “Just then Julie and I looked at each other and said, ‘we could do something about it.’” Their first meeting, held at the Robert Mondavi Winery, drew some 80 people. “Our main goal then was to set the record straight. The information that was coming out was all wrong, all negative,” said Rodeno. “And we all knew, intuitively, that it wasn’t correct. So we set out to get ourselves educated and started sharing what we found with policy makers and other people in the industry. And pretty soon, the people in the industry who had money and the resources started realizing that they weren’t going to be struck by lightning if they stood up for wine.” Rodeno said the name Women for WineSense was picked because a lot of the negative press was directed toward women, but the moniker ended up with a deeper significance. “We didn’t realize it then, but it turned out to be a very powerful name. Naming ourselves was one of the hardest things we had to do.” Some in the group thought the name was too exclusionary, even though men were, and still are, welcome. “Right away we found it was a good name, it really sounded like a more powerful force than we really were. It was remarkable. It sounded like some powerful women’s organization.” There are now chapters across the country from Oregon to New York and 9/13.1 from Virginia to Texas. N A P A sonoma 15 Founders Julie Johnson Johnson has been recognized as one of the nation’s pioneer activists of socially-responsible winemaking and has been consulting in organic winemaking for the past three decades and was co-founder of the environmentally-friendly Frog’s Leap Winery. A past president of Zinfandel Advocates & Producers (ZAP) and member of Rutherford Dusty Society and Napa Valley Vintners, her wines have been recognized by Robert Parker, Douglas Wilder of VinFolio, The Wine Enthusiast, James Gordon, The New York Times, and others. Meanwhile, the old barn at her Rutherford ranch was converted into a small winery; Cabernet planted; and the vineyard received certification as a California Certified Organic Farm (CCOF): the Tres Sabores “Three tastes” project was born. In 2004, she released the first estate Cabernet Sauvignon: “Rutherford Perspective,” which joined her estate Zinfandel, Tres Sabores, Rutherford and her quaffing blend, ¿Porqué No? in the marketplace. In the spring of 2006, the first Tres Sabores white wine: Farina Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc was brought to market. Michaela K. Rodeno Rodeno is author of the recently released, “From Bubbles to Boardrooms: Act 1: Startups Are Such Fun (Volume 1).” She is an experienced corporate director and recently retired CEO with extensive experience in building startup premium consumer products companies. As one of few female CEO’s in the U.S. wine industry, she was a natural choice when Silicon Valley Bank Financial Group sought a director to represent its fast-growing premium wine practice in 2001. She served for ten years, chairing the Compensation Committee from 2004-2011. The Rodeno family grows, bottles and markets a small amount of Napa Valley Sangiovese under their Villa Ragazzi label, which Ms. Rodeno re-launched in 2011 after a decade-long hiatus. 9/13.1 WWS Co-Founder, co-founder, Frog’s Leap Winery, ‘Wine-grower’ of Tres Sabores Winery WWS Co-Founder, former VP of Marketing, Domaine Chandon and former CEO, St. Supéry N A P A sonoma 16 Board of Directors Christine Mueller, Chapter President Coming out of Fortune 500 companies, she has been the CEO of Marketing Made Simple since 1999, accumlating over 25 years in advertising and media. I have built some incredibly valuable relationships – many have led to new business opportunities, others have led to new friendships, and some have led to both! I was a charter member of WWS waaaaaaay back in 1990 in New York City, motivated by the energy of a group of like-minded women who weren’t going let MADD and the neo-prohibitionists “win.” Ten years later I ended up in Sonoma, looking to donate my time and network with folks in the wine biz. And the rest, as they say, is history. I moved to Sonoma in 2003 and became a member in 2004 of the Napa|Sonoma chapter so I could meet new people and network in the area. I then served on the WWS National Board Member for almost 5 years. I love WWS! I practically owe my career to it. The skills I’ve learned and people I’ve met here have made it possible for me to grow my career exponentially in the wine industry. My participation in the HR Roundtable facilitated a job offer from Silver Oak only six days after my position was eliminated at Jackson Family Wines. I credit landing on my feet to my active participation on the roundtable which afforded me visibility as an HR professional and allowed me to build relationships with other winery colleagues and provided immediate access to networking when I personally needed it, and luckily, securing new employment." 9/14.1 N A P A sonoma 19 Testimonials Dr. Liz Thach, MW Professor, Sonoma State Univ. It can be as simple as feeling intimidated by having to make a good choice from a wine list in front of a large group of colleagues or prospective clients. Or, it can be something far more complex, such as determining whether or not the wine brand you produce should be repositioned for the winery’s long-term financial health and growth. “Making these decisions can be fraught with peril for many women (and men). Our goal has always been pretty simple: WWS is here to make it all easier. We want to help the enthusiast find the confidence to make a great selection off a wine list. We want to provide a safe environment for women wine CEOs to bounce ideas off one another and be supported.” ~ Chris Mueller, chapter president. Mentor Program WWS Cookbook Warning: Not all programs are anticipated to reach fruition in the upcoming year. Members recently completed a satisfaction survey, letting us know they were mostly “very satisfied” with their membership. Of course, when asked what programs they wanted more of, they answered “everything”! Surprisingly, a lecture series was the highest requested additions. In the past year, the chapter has added more than a half dozen new programs from a tasting club to meetup events. A wine book club and other tasting education programs may also get underway in 2015 to provide more networking and learning opportunities for all members. A mentor program is planned to help those new to the industry (or looking to rise within it) expand their horizons. In short, our goal is to increase the value of membership to individuals and businesses alike. Let us know if you have a suggestion to achive that goal! 10/14.1 N A P A sonoma 21
