In some Papua New Guinea schools students don’t have the basic materials to help them learn. The teacher writes the lesson on the board, the kids then memorize it, and practice by writing in the sand. Click to continue What can you give? Donate good condition materials you have left over at the end of the school year. Used but working pens Used pencils (not short stubs) Paper, exercise books Photocopy paper, clean on one side. Pencil Sharpeners Rubbers Click to continue Rulers Donate clean exercise books Tear out the used pages in your exercise book, and donate the remaining clean pages. Click to continue Remove untidy scribble and rubbish from the covers You could recover the exercise book to make it presentable ? Click to continue Remember How would you feel if someone gave you rubbish. Make sure you donate clean and useful goods, TEXT BOOKS and Dictionaries Is your school updating its text books? What will happen to the old text books? Are they up to date, not too old ? Do you think that kids in PNG could use them? YOU BET they can ! Click to continue We need desks, black boards, working computers and software too … the chairs and books in this classroom were donated by students from Central Queensland last year. Click to continue It’s more than just reading and writing … The need doesn’t stop at books. Has your school got any surplus sporting equipment? Click to continue Where will your gifts go ? Your recycled educational materials will go to remote schools in Papua New Guinea Queensland Click to continue During term 4 … Your St Vinnies group should start planning collections in your school now. Call your local St Vinnies President for help, and keep them informed about your activities. Invite your local St Vinnies to your school to talk about the project. Arrange for a day or two in January, to sort and pack the donations Place some advertising notices in your school news-letters. Click to continue What do you do ? Before the last day of school… You, personally, sort and clean your own gifts of school materials and sporting goods. •Your class collects the goods, and puts them in boxes that you collect from your local super-market. Click to continue After you have collected the goods…. Call your local St Vinnies to arrange for them to collect it. They’ll take it to a depot near your school. In January your school group should help St Vinnies to sort and pack the boxes and prepare them for shipping. Click to continue What you do at school will affect what happens over at PNG… This is the text written on the back of the photo you’ll see next … Click to continue A school’s deputy principal opens one of our containers as the CUSTOMS lady looks on. If the container contents does not match the list, there is trouble. Click to continue In January, before school starts… You’ll have to sort the goods into itemized boxes. Make sure class sets are complete. Remove any unsuitable magazines or novels. Make an accurate list of the contents of the goods, in each box. Clearly Label each box with its contents. You can do this at the St Vinnies depot. Click to continue Place In January… the boxes on pallets, then shrink wrap them for transport. Make them water tight. Don’t forget to Attach the contents list. Contact St Vinnies to get some shrink wrap, its like over-sized glad-wrap. You should call St Vinnies for help to sort it all and put the goods on palettes. Click to continue Your St Vincent de Paul group gets involved Click to continue It doesn’t take much effort, but your help is desperately needed… Click to continue St Vinnies will transport the goods to Brisbane where it will be put in a shipping container. Click to continue Moving the container for shipping… Click to continue from Brisbane to PNG… The container will be put on a ship which will be met at PNG by our workers over there. Click to continue In Papua New Guinea …. The materials will be delivered to the remote schools by truck, boat, tractor or what ever means we have available.
