Preparing for your school’s I.C.
• If your school has not yet been scheduled,
you can at least identify suitable rooms:
– Front wall must be unobstructed (flat) solid wall
space of minimum 3.6m wide by 2.8m high
– Room to cater for at least 30 students
– Power and data outlets must be on the front wall.
Power outlet must be on back wall
– Room must be accessible by all (i.e. not a particular
teacher’s classroom). Consider disabled access
as well
NSW Department of Education & Training
Sydney Region
NSW Public Schools – Leading the Way
www.sydneyr.det.nsw.edu.au
Preparing for your school’s I.C.
– Room should be secure (decent locks door/ windows)
– Consider existing ambient noise levels
• Location of room (eg. beside COLA?)
• Carpet on floor?
– Library/Computer labs may not be suitable due to loss
of access when a VC needs to be run
– Long rooms can be a problem for the rear
camera/microphones
– If you need to build a wall, ask a TA for advice ASAP
– When selecting your Connected Classroom, consider
future – not current – requirements

Learning Tools Project
• An email service for 1 200 000 school and TAFE
students replacing the UNISYS email service
• 122 000 school and TAFE teachers to have the same
email service as DET corporate staff by migrating
existing accounts from UNISYS to DET’s “in-house”
email service
• Access for parents/caregivers to view their children’s
reports online
Learning Tools Project
(LTP)
• A secure online workspace for staff and students to
create, store, edit, reuse, manage, view and deliver
digital learning content from collections and
repositories
• An adaptable and scalable system able to deliver the
latest Web 2.0 technologies to staff and students for
example blogs and wikis

“Blogging” is educationally sound
http://halfanhour.blogspot.com/2009/04/blogs-in-education.html
• Blogs provide a space for sharing opinions and learning in
order to grow communities of discourse and knowledge — a
space where students and teachers can learn from each other.
• Blogs help learners to see knowledge as interconnected as
opposed to a set of discrete facts.
• Blogs can give students a totally new perspective on the
meaning of voice. As students explore their own learning and
thinking their distinctive voices emerge. Student voices are
essential to the conversations we need to have about learning.
NSW Department of Education & Training
Sydney Region
NSW Public Schools – Leading the Way
www.sydneyr.det.nsw.edu.au
Learning Tools Project
• The worldwide audience provides recognition for students that
can be quite profound. Students feel more compelled to write
when they believe many others may read and respond.
• The opportunity for collective and collaborative learning is
enormous. Students have the opportunity to read their
classmates’ blogs and those of others. This is not possible in a
regular classroom setting.
• Blogging provides the possibility of connecting with experts
about the topic on which they are writing.
• The interactive nature of blogging creates enthusiasm for
writing and communication.

• Test the usability of the blog, including workflow, roles and
responsibilities
• Determine the quality and appropriateness of application help
• Assess and inform the continued development of support materials
• Gather user feedback to guide future iterations of the blog
• Assist in determining the timeline for the wider release of the blog and/or
future iterations

Learning Tools Project
The “Blog” combines four applications:
1. Blogging tool
2. Media Library - enables uploading, formatting and storing of
files, images, video etc for display within the blog
3. Group Builder - integrates with ERN and CLAMS so that
teachers can identify a class and make a blog available to the
group
4. Advanced Group Builder - accessed via the Applications
Management Utility (AMU), enables mixed groups to be created,
for example across schools

Cyberbullying
"Cyberbullying" is when a child, preteen or
teen is tormented, threatened, harassed,
humiliated, embarrassed or otherwise
targeted by another child, preteen or teen
using the Internet, interactive and digital
technologies or mobile phones. It has to
have a minor on both sides, or at least
have been instigated by a minor against
another minor.”

Cyberbullying: Don’t Ignore It
• The awareness among parents and teachers
about the incidence and affects of
Cyberbullying is very low
• In the U.S. approximately half of all high

Digital Education Revolution
• In March, the program was renamed from the “Digital
Education Revolution” (DER) to “Laptops4Learning”
(L4L) reflecting NSW’s implementation
• That title also complemented the DET’s existing
Technology4Learning (T4L) Project
• As of Wednesday 10 June, the project has been
renamed back to “Digital Education Revolution –
New South Wales” (DER-NSW)
• Lesson: Politics is fun.
