Wikis in Plain English By Lee Le Fever http://www.commoncraft.com/video-wikisplain-english What is a Wiki? • A wiki is a “quick” easy-to-use web page that multiple people can edit. What’s a wiki good for? • Group projects • Individual student projects • Portfolios • Sharing of resources and links • Keeping students, parents and other teachers informed • Classroom calendar What’s a good site to use? • pbworks is a free, easy to use site. It takes 60 seconds to create and no knowledge of html is necessary; you and your class can start using it in less than 5 minutes! • To get started, go to: pbworks.com Who controls the content? • Whoever had permission to edit it. The site creator controls this. • As the administrator, an email will be sent to you when changes are made indicating who made the changes so you can check the content and make changes, if necessary. • Wikis can be private or public, depending on your settings. Can I attach files, pictures or video clips? Absolutely! Is my data safe? • Yes. Data is backed up hourly by pbworks. • Different versions of pages are saved so you can revert to an earlier version if necessary. It’s a great opportunity to practice student netiquette! New Page Give your page a name Create the Sidebar Edit the Sidebar To link a page to the SideBar 1. Type the name of the page here 3. Click on appropriate page here 2. Highlight it Page will now be linked and shown in sidebar Linking Files (Word, PP, ect.) 1. Must be in Edit 2. Select “Image & Files 3. Upload Files 4. After file has loaded, select the file and it will automatically appear or linked on your page. 4. Highlight text and select the file you want to link. Adding Pictures 1. Must be in Edit 2. Select “Images & Files” 3. Upload Picture from file 4. When picture has loaded, click it and it will appear on your page. Linking Websites on Wiki Pages 4. Select URL Link Type 1. Must be in Edit 3. Select Insert/Edit Link 2. Highlight text you want linked, if desired 5. Add URL 6. Click OK Page Changes/Revisions Delete Move Edit Rename Revisions Adding Comments Depending on the settings, comments can be added on every page.
