does the medium become the message?
 Online

include all alumni?
 To
what extent can online alumni to alumni
outreach be conducted without staff
intervention?

Pros
Limitations
WebEx (MIT account)
 Lots of advanced features and excellent customer
support
 Compatible with range of operating systems including
Windows, Mac, Linux, UNIX
 Supports many more participants than GotTo Meeting
 Capability for 3G smartphones to connect to meetings
as well.
 Remote desktop control which allows attendees to
control the presenter’s desktop and desktop
broadcasting.
 Allows for audio to be transmitted via telephone or
VoIP
GoTo Meeting
 simple and intuitive interface
 User friendly
 Supports up to 16 participants
including the host
 Competitive pricing. Free 30
day trial and a competitive flat
rate offers unlimited usage.
 Allows for audio to be
transmitted via telephone or
VoIP.
 Excellent customer support.




Notes
installing the Web Ex client on computer is
troublesome to some especially if the person is not
technical.
WebEx’s free trial is shorter than GoToMeeting’s 30
day trial (we used MIT’s free version)
Some features not too intuitive


Lack of support for Linux
platform-- GoToMeeting only
supports Mac and PC – some
alumni who use Linux complain
Lacks in features compared
WebEx.
No webcam video support; lack
of mobile device support
For a light and fast web conferencing product, GoToMeeting is a good option. For those who
require more features and compatibility with Linux, Solaris, or Unix, WebEx seems more
appropriate.
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Are video interfaces value added?

How to moderate audience participation?

To record or not to record?

How to maximize audience interaction (and maintain
audience attention)?

How to create virtual component to live events (and
vice versa)?
