2011 Collin County Young Artist Competition Sponsored by the Plano Symphony Orchestra Guild, with financial support from ATMOS Energy & TOPAZ Labs DATE: Saturday, January 15, 2011 PLACE: Collin College, Spring Creek campus 2011 Collin County Young Artist Competition • Showcase the talented, young musicians in Collin County • Choose 3 Grand Prize Winners to perform with the Plano Symphony Orchestra at the March concert • Limited to students with some connection to Collin County or the Plano Symphony through their home, school, or music teacher (cello) (piano) 2011 GRAND PRIZE WINNERS (marimba) 2011 Collin County Young Artist Competition • 1985 - First Competition - 3 judges listened to 17 contestants in closed auditions • 1997 - Competition expanded to 2 days for 58 contestants with 3 judges • 1998 - Format changed to have closed Preliminary Round auditions with a Final Round open to the public. Had 6 judges for 53 contestants. • 2009 - Preliminary Round Junior Strings & Senior Strings were split and run concurrently. Had 8 judges total for 92 contestants. • 2011 - Had 117 contestants with 8 judges. Announcement of Finalists FINALS 2011 Collin County Young Artist Competition • 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM Preliminary Rounds (closed auditions) Warm-up hallway • 5:50 PM - Announcement of 12 Finalists • 6:00 PM - FINALS 5 min. performances open to the public • 7:20 PM - Reception & judges deliberation • 8:00 PM - Awards Ceremony FINALS 2011 Collin County Young Artist Competition • May 2010 - Reserve facilities • July - Update mailing lists, print & mail brochures • Aug. to Nov. - Approve additional concertos, secure judges, volunteers, donations, & piano tuner. • Dec. - Applications due. Schedule auditions. Contact contestants, monitors, & facility. CONCERT • Jan. 2011 - Confirm details. Get pianos tuned. Set up displays. • Jan. 15, 2011 - Competition Day • Jan. 16 to March - Work with Grand Prize Winners on formal portraits, biographies, slide show, and rehearsals. Order trophies. Plan reception. • Mar. 19, 2011 - Plano Symphony Orchestra Concert featuring the 3 Grand Prize Winners 2011 Collin County Young Artist Competition • Chairperson - organize the Competition, scheduling, and audition details • Co-Chair - coordinate the food requirements for the Hospitality Room & reception • Competition Day Volunteers: 29 monitors, 5 for the reception, 2 photographers, 15 donated 4 dozen cookies, 3 transported the judges Piano Monitors Reception Committee Check-in monitor 2011 Collin County Young Artist Competition • TOTAL FUNDING $ 9,680 Entry fees $ 4,680 Sponsors $ 5,000 • EXPENSES $ 4,319 Venue rental $840 Piano tuning $450 Judge stipends $2,385 Awards $278 Supplies & misc $366 Grand Prize Winners with Sponsors NET PROFIT . . . . . . . $ 5,361 • IN-KIND DONATIONS $ 1,871 Refreshments $ 690 Portraits $ 825 Hotel rooms for judges $ 356 Pizza donated for reception 2011 Collin County Young Artist Competition • Involves young people and reaches a more diverse audience for the Young Artists’ concert in March • Supports and introduces young local talent to the general public • One Grand Prize Winner performs at the school concerts for 4th & 5th graders. • Two winners visited and performed at a middle school. • Six winners performed a concert at a local retirement home Retirement Home performance 2011 Collin County Young Artist Competition • Utilized the internet, email, and PSO website more • Posted lots of photos on the PSO website for contestants to download • Created a PSO email address for the Chairperson • Secured 2 non-local judges - required extra volunteers for transportation • Reserved a table for each GPW family at the post-concert reception • Presented a concert at a retirement home with 6 of the winners • Coordinated schedule with the Juanita Miller Competition for 17 contestants who entered both competitions. • Presented 2-minute slideshows to introduce each Grand Prize Winner at the March concert 2011 Collin County Young Artist Competition
