In 2017, Aarhus will be European Capital of
Culture, one of the most significant cultural
events in Europe. Queen Margrethe II of Denmark
is the official patron. Visitors can look forward
to a year of fabulous art and culture, created
by Danish and foreign artists. Using the theme
‘Let’s Rethink’, Aarhus 2017 is creating a cultural
laboratory, where we use art and the power of
creativity to make magical moments, and find
new, sustainable solutions to societal challenges.

VIBRANT CITY

Aarhus has the youngest population and highest
concentration of students in Denmark, and
visitors really notice its special atmosphere
and energy. Explore the streets in the old Latin
Quarter. Walk around the spectacular artwork
‘Your rainbow panorama’. Take a bicycle ride
along the water’s edge and in the woods, sit
back in one of the cafés by the city centre canal.
VIKING
SETTLEMENT

Aarhus is one of the oldest cities in the Nordic
Region. Over 1200 years ago, Vikings built the
first settlement by the river, which runs through
the heart of the city. Each year sees hundreds of
Viking enthusiasts meet up for the biggest Viking
Gathering in the Nordic Region. Vikings come
from all around the world to fight with sword and
shield, on horseback or in man-to-man combat,
and at the Viking Market visitors can see handi­
crafts and eat Viking food. Each year the event
ends with a huge battle on the beach next to
Moesgaard Museum.

Aarhus is the gastronomic capital of Jutland and
a world-class gastronomic destination – with
three Michelin-starred restaurants to prove it.
Sample the New Nordic cuisine of freshly caught
fish from the North Sea or Aarhus Bay, new
potatoes from Samsø, wood sorrel, wild garlic
and other aromatic Nordic raw ingredients
taken from the Djursland peninsula.
