People
Darren Whitford (Company Director) - With over 20 years of Electrical and Tower Crane
experience behind him, Darren made the giant step in 2004 in setting up his own Tower Crane
Services company. To succeed Darren’s challenge was to gain the trust and respect of clients in
an industry that’s dominated by major players, high technical and heavily regulated in terms
of health and safety. A year on year turnover growth and new businesses regularly being
added to the customer portfolio is proof enough that the industry has accepted Darren’s
credentials. With a rapidly growing reputation in Tower Crane Services work, this Company
Director with excellent technical knowledge and skills soon acquired qualified erectors and
technicians, setting the technical, schedule and performance standards that they should
operate against. The success of this can be demonstrated by a large part of Skylines work
being repeat business and customer referrals. Investment in modernising our crane fleet,
investment in personnel training and investment in acquiring ISO 9001 accreditation are
examples of how Skyline has sustain growth thru 2008. Through Darren’s leadership, it's not
surprising that organisations are increasingly choosing Skyline to handle vital projects.
Peter Whitford (General Manager) - Peter has over 40 years of construction experience the
majority of which was spent with MW Kellogg Limited – petro-chemical construction
company based in Greenford in Middlesex. Peter spent the early part of his career on
construction sites before taking a series of managerial position in head office. In 1996 he
reached the position of head of Project Controls, responsible for cost, planning and
scheduling, estimating, work hour control and controls management and in 1998 he became
a Fellow of the Association of Cost Engineers. Drawn by the enormous growth and prestige
potential of his sons company, he took early retirement in March 2007 to join Skyline as its
General Manager.
Margaret Plom (Accounts Manager) - Margaret joined the company in January 2005 as the
Accounts and Finance Manager, bringing with her over 20 years of accounts, payroll and
finance management experience. She is qualified in Sage computerized accounting and payroll
and studied with the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants between 1997 and 2000.
Before joining Skyline she held senior Financial Controller positions, reporting directly the
Manager Director and Shareholders and responsible for liaising with Auditors, Financial
Institutions and HMRC. She carries these responsibilities into her Skyline role and in addition
the installing and operating accounting systems and procedures and ensuring adherence with
statutory regulations.
Awards
At this year’s Thurrock Business Awards the winner of “The Growing Business of the Year” sponsored by
The Thames Gateway Development Corporation went to SKYLINE TOWER CRANE SERVICES LTD. Sean
O’Donnell from the Thames Gateway DC (left of the picture) presented the award to Margaret Plom (Finance
Manager), Darren Whitford (Company Director) and Peter Whitford (General Manager). Mr O’Donnell said
that the award was open to businesses identifying a high profit and revenue growth. We were looking for
profit re-investment in-order to maintain and secure future growth including an increase in personnel,
strategic partners as well as an increased number of markets, geographical and / or product. SKYLINE
demonstrated significant progress in all these areas as well as evidence of success against targets set.
Darren Whitford SKYLINE’S Managing Director also won
the coveted “Businessman of the Year”. This award
sponsored by Thurrock Council recognised that in-order
for SKYLINE to succeed, Darren’s challenge was to gain
the trust and respect of clients in an industry that’s
dominated by major players, high technical and heavily
regulated in terms of health and safety. A year on year
turnover growth and new businesses regularly being
added to the customer portfolio is proof enough that the
industry has accepted Darren’s and his staff’s credentials.
On receiving the awards, Darren Whitford said that
growth comes from being responsive, safe and
working together with our customers to accomplish
their projects in line with their budget and schedule
requirements.
