One of Canada’s premier singer-songwriters, Ron Hynes has created beautifully crafted signature songs for more than 35 years. His
fall 2010 release, Stealing Genius (Borealis/Universal) marks his eighth solo recording and his third project with award-winning
producer, Paul Mills. Inspired by works from some of his favorite authors and poets (including Donna Morrisey, Des Walsh, Stan Dragland,
Randall Maggs, Al Pittman and Michael Crummey), Ron Hynes has crafted a collection of remarkable songs that not only echo a life
in Newfoundland and Labrador, but resonate with people everywhere.
The release of Stealing Genius came hot on the heels of the world premiere of The Man of a Thousand Songs, a feature-length
documentary, of which Hynes is both subject and star. Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Wm D MacGillivray and co-produced by Terry
Greenlaw (Picture Plant) and Jordan Canning (Get Set Films), the film premiered to capacity crowds at the Toronto International Film

Shred Kelly is a formulation of friends and foot stomping good times born in the East Kootenay’s of British Columbia. Hailing from the
town of Fernie, the five piece band is best known for mixing clawhammer banjo riffs that tear the fabric of space and time with ambient
synth, high voltage guitar, fierce drums, and hauntingly sweet vocal harmonies to produce a sound that has been properly coined “Stoke
Folk”. While their gritty and fun 2010 album Goodbye July still resonates strongly with boot slappin’ slacker anthems such as “I Hate Work”
and “Ghost Inside My Head”, their newest full length album release In the Hills takes the mountain string band and adds a cup of electric
shock, belting out stories of small town love and tragedy in the places they hail from. Having recently been awarded 2012 Artist of the
Year at the Kooteney Music Awards and winning a spot on the Green Couch Sessions/ CBC Radio 3 ‘Tracks on Tracks’ train adventure from
Vancouver to Toronto, Shred Kelly is turning banjo doubters into sweaty indie folk rock believers on the dance floor, one town at a time.

3. Finding Dawn: Shedding Light on Missing and Murdered Aboriginal Women Feb 13
Cinema Politica Fredericton and Reproductive Justice NB present Finding Dawn on Friday, February 13 at 7pm at Conserver House, located
at 180 Saint John St.
Dawn Crey, Ramona Wilson and Daleen Kay Bosse are just three of the estimated 1,100 Aboriginal women who have gone missing or been
murdered in Canada over the past 30 years. Acclaimed Métis filmmaker Christine Welsh embarks on an epic journey to shed light on these
murders and disappearances that remain unresolved to this day. She begins at Vancouver’s skid row where more than 60 poor women
disappeared and travels to the “Highway of Tears” in northern British Columbia where more than two dozen women (all but one Native)
have vanished.

4. The Art of Printmaking exhibition begins at Gallery 78 Feb 13
Original multiples take time and care to create. There are many different types of original multiples, also known as “prints,” from etchings
and engravings to serigraphs and linocuts. This type of art making is as original as any painting and often much more labour intensive.
Come learn about the art of printmaking and view exquisite works by Ann Manuel, Bruno Bobak, Steven Rhude, Robert Rutherford,
Charlotte Jones, Christine Koch, Francis Wishart, and more. Each artist has a unique hand and each brings sensitivity to their chosen forms
of printmaking.
The exhibition begins Friday, February 13 at Gallery 78, located at 796 Queen St. (corner of Church and Queen). We will be open: Tuesday

5. Art Lovers Tour at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery Feb 14
On February 14 at 1pm at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, located at 703 Queen Street, experience a passionate and personal tour of the
collections of the Beaverbrook Art Gallery as seen through the eyes of art lover and docent, Gerry Rymes. Special attention will be paid to
the gallery's permanent collection with insights on the works and the collector himself. Delight in the new temporary exhibitions on
display in New Brunswick's wonderful gallery.

6. St. Valentine's Evening with Claud Michaud Feb 14
Claud Michaud brings Félix Leclerc’s work to life again on stage. He sings these songs so well that, in listening to him, at times you can feel
the spirit as well as the voice of the great Félix Leclerc in the room for a brief moment. Michaud’s magnificent bass voice as he
accompanies himself artfully on the guitar, the sound of the double bass, the violin, and the accordion, and the unpretentious staging
elevate the melodies and words of the artist considered the greatest singing poet Quebec has ever known. You will be at once touched by
the freshness, humanity, and commitment of Félix Leclerc’s songs.
This show will take place on February 14 at 8pm at the Centre communautaire Sainte-Anne, located at 715 Priestman Street. Tickets

On the heels of her triumphant Met performances in Eugene Onegin, soprano Anna Netrebko takes on another Tchaikovsky heroine in the
first opera of this intriguing double bill, consisting of an enchanting fairy tale (Iolanta) followed by an erotic psychological thriller (Duke
Bluebeard’s Castle). Netrebko stars as the beautiful blind girl who experiences love for the first time in Iolanta, while Nadja Michael is the
unwitting victim of the diabolical Bluebeard, played by Mikhail Petrenko. Both operas are directed by Mariusz Trelinski, who was inspired
by classic noir films of the 1940s. Iolanta also stars Piotr Beczala, and Valery Gergiev conducts both operas.
The live performance (Russian and Hungarian with English subtitles) is presented on Saturday, February 14 at 1:30pm. There will be an

Shane Neilson is a poet originally from Oromocto. His most recent book of poems, Complete Physical (2010 Porcupine's Quill) was

the editor for Frog Hollow Press.
Roger Moore was born in 1944 on the Gower in Wales; he landed in Fredericton in 1971, since which he has had a distinguished career at
St. Thomas University, collecting awards, both professional and literary. Having published poetry, screenplays, short stories, novels,

Chinese New Year Gala
The Chinese Cultural Association of New Brunswick (CCANB) will be hosting its Annual Gala for the Chinese Lunar New Year (the year of
golden sheep) and the main theme for the Gala is “Maple Leaf on Silk Road”. It will demonstrate the everlasting history of the business
trade and culture exchange between China and other countries in the world. It will also showcase the multicultural spirit in Canada,
symbolized by the maple leaf in our new home. With traditional Chinese folk dances, instruments and songs this will be a great
opportunity to come and enjoy the richness of Chinese culture.

Symphony New Brunswick presents
Celebrating Our Heritage
Returning to her native province, soprano Suzie Leblanc presents two song cycles composed for her by Christos Hatzis and Alasdair
Maclean based on poems by Elizabeth Bishop. Ms. Leblanc will be accompanied by SNB Chamber ensemble Camerata NB and winds
ensemble Ventus Machina. She will also premier three traditional Acadian songs in new arrangements written by Moncton composer
Andrew Creeggan. Elizabeth Bishop, winner of the 1956 Pulitzer Prize for her book of Poems, North and South, loved the Atlantic
provinces and retained a strong connection to the ocean and coastal wildlife despite an adventurous life that led her throughout Europe
and the Americas. The time as a child spent in Atlantic Canada was her happiest and she returned to this time often in her poetry and her
thoughts. Our common Atlantic Heritage and what this means to us all here in New Brunswick, is celebrated in this exquisite February
Concert. The orchestra will also present Benjamin Britten’s first opus, Sinfonietta, composed when Britten was 18. Rounding out the
program is Edvard Grieg’s Holberg Suite. Symphony New Brunswick is proud of its ensembles Camerata NB and Ventus Machina, as they
have delighted audiences throughout the province by presenting national quality concerts in smaller venues in a varied, innovative style.
Tickets are $40 for adults and $10 for students, and are available through the Playhouse Box Office.

Elsa & Fred brings together Hollywood legends Christopher Plummer (Barrymore) and Shirley MacLaine (Bernie) — who previously shared
the screen in Richard Attenborough’s 2007 film Closing the Ring — as two aging lovebirds who discover that it’s never too late to make
dreams come true.
Plummer stars as the straight-laced Fred, a recently widowed gentleman in his seventies who is forced by his daughter Lydia (Marcia Gay
Harden, Magic in the Moonlight) to move into a small apartment complex. There, he meets his new neighbour Elsa (MacLaine), who has
dreamed for sixty years of recreating the famous Fontana di Trevi scene from Fellini’s La Dolce Vita with the great love of her life — a love
that she has yet to meet. Storming into Fred’s orderly life like a whirlwind, Elsa determines to teach him the true value of the time that he
has left, and to live the precious moments that remain of his life to the fullest. Gradually letting down his defences, Fred finds new

For the source of her latest film, director Anne Fontaine has turned to graphic novelist Posy Simmonds, whose update of Thomas Hardy’s
Far From the Madding Crowd provided Stephen Frears with the story for 2010’s Tamara Drewe. This time, Gustave Flaubert’s classic novel
of romantic yearning, Madame Bovary, is the basis for another imaginative recasting of a timeless masterpiece.
Embracing the melancholy of Flaubert’s book while placing it against the bucolic wonders of the verdant Norman landscape, Gemma
Bovery orbits around its young, married protagonist, in this telling an Englishwoman (Gemma Arterton) who moves to a small French
village with her husband (Jason Flemyng). Another recent arrival is Martin Joubert (Fabrice Luchini), a baker who has fled Paris, along with
his long-suffering wife, in search of stability and equilibrium. Martin rapidly takes a proprietary interest in the English beauty and falls
under the spell of her charm. Gemma’s passionate nature is ill served by her husband, and it’s not long before her eye starts to wander.

Fontaine’s film is not just an incisive look at a young woman confronting a series of key choices in her life as she loses her head in a fit of
passion: in her clever revision of the Flaubert original, she portrays Joubert as a man completely aware of the narrative of Madame Bovary,
and who makes awkward and self-conscious interventions in an attempt to change that story. Luchini is perfect as the wary, lovelorn
baker, while Arterton — who also starred as the title character in Frears’ film — fits the role of her namesake to perfection. As both the
object and subject of love, she glides into her role with effortless aplomb.
This term, 12 limited release, independent, foreign, and Canadian films will be shown. The film series is open to everyone. Regular

which explores the duality of healing. A carefully distant wife, an easy-going husband, a rebellious sister, a well-meaning mother, and an

The show, set in late 19th century Germany, is based on the controversial German play Spring Awakening (1891) by Frank Wedekind. The

Award, the original Broadway production won 8 Tony Awards including the 2008 Tony Award for Best Musical.

This workshop will be in two parts. Participants can opt to come for the whole day or simply attend the afternoon portion. The morning
workshop will consist of creating an Etsy profile, and covers the basics of setting up a store. Participants are required to bring images and
descriptions of at least 3 pieces of work that they want to sell on Etsy. This part of the workshop helps participants get through the set-up
process and will help get each person to the point where they have a few items online available for sale. The afternoon portion of the
workshop is a how-to: An experienced Etsy seller has a personal tool box of 'tricks' to drive buyers to their site. We will cover many topics
including creating Etsy treasuries, 'following' key people, taking great product shots, and joining Etsy groups. The afternoon workshop will
instruct participants on how to best manage their time on Etsy and where to invest their energy to drive buyers to their products.

1. Apply to the City of Fredericton’s Arts, Culture, and Heritage Funding Program
Applications are now being accepted for the 2015 City of Fredericton Arts, Culture and Heritage Funding Program. An additional $10,000
has been approved by Council to increase projects from the local multicultural community. This is in response to recommendations
included in the City’s Culture Plan, approved last summer.
The annual funding program is designed to encourage new projects or activities in the creative arts, culture, and heritage sectors. Nonprofit organizations arts, culture and heritage organizations are eligible for small grants to assist with festivals, events, series, projects, and
shared equipment.
Since the program was established in 2001, support has been provided to a variety of cultural projects and events including music, theatre
and film festivals, exhibitions, artists-in-residency programs, theatre productions, heritage publications, concert series, workshops and
demonstrations.

2. Call for Submissions: 2015 PARC Playwrights’ Colony
Playwrights Atlantic Resource Centre (PARC) will be hosting the 2015 PARC Playwrights’ Colony from May 10 to 24 2015 in Sackville, New
Brunswick on the Mount Allison University campus. The annual Playwrights’ Colony, PARC’s flagship program, is a two-week long
playwrights’ retreat. Working with a team of professional dramaturges and actors, eight to ten playwrights from across the Atlantic region
have an opportunity to develop a new script. The Colony provides the most intensive writing opportunity for playwrights in this region. It
provides playwrights with the time to write, reflect, and revisit their work in a supportive and nurturing environment, as well as the oneon-one assistance of a professional dramaturge, interaction and dialogue with other playwrights, with housing and travel costs covered.
The Colony is open to emerging and established playwrights in Atlantic Canada and offers them a two week residency, with the
opportunity to work with a dramaturge and to draw on the expertise of a professional company of experienced workshop actors during
the second week. Playwrights may also choose to take part in public readings of excerpts of their new work (May 20) in the new MotyerFancy Theatre on the Mount Allison University campus.

Playwrights may submit an application for the Colony with either a completed draft of a script or with a partially completed work in
progress.The playwright must be a playwriting member of PARC, whose membership dues are up to date. (Membership for playwrights

A cover letter indicating what the playwright hopes to accomplish at the Colony and any other information about the script in

A short bio or resume for the playwright outlining previous experience – unless already a long standing and well known member
of PARC, with previous experience at the Colony.

A synopsis of the script/project with sample scenes and/or a complete draft of the script.

Scripts MUST include: page numbers; a title page that includes title, playwright’s name, address, e-mail address and phone
number; and a character list indicating casting requirements.
Please note that playwrights will be expected to attend for the full two week period.

3. Auditions for Branch Out Productions’ 13 the Musical
Branch Out Productions is excited to announce auditions for their upcoming production of 13 the Musical. 13 is a musical about that
magical age where a boy becomes a man, a girl becomes a woman and life becomes a mess. This show will be directed by 13 year-old Ady
King, and feature a cast and crew of teenagers!
Auditions are February 23, from 7 to 8:30pm at Charlotte St Arts Centre. Auditionees are asked to be prepared to stay for the full hour and
a half, to prepare a verse and chorus from the song of their choice, come prepared to move.

4. SHMF Invites Artist Design Submissions
The Board of Directors of the Sheila Hugh Mackay Foundation invites submissions from New Brunswick artists/ artisans for the creation of
an iconic presentation piece to be used as the symbol of the Foundation’s signature Strathbutler Award.
This competition for the design and creation of the Strathbutler Award is open to all New Brunswick artists/artisans. Submissions will be
reviewed by a panel of senior artist professionals, who will select a shortlist of finalists. Each finalist will be invited to submit a fully
detailed proposal and paid a $500.00 design fee. All rights to the selected design will be the property of the Sheila Hugh Mackay
Foundation.
Since 1991, the Strathbutler Award has been given in recognition of excellence in the visual arts of New Brunswick. Artists of distinction
from a wide range of visual arts disciplines have been recognized for their artistic legacies and for their significant contributions to the
cultural landscape of New Brunswick. In addition to the $25,000 award, all Strathbutler artists will henceforth receive symbolic recognition
of their achievement with this iconic object. The new presentation piece will be unveiled at the 2015 Strathbutler Gala.

negotiated with designer. Managing a cost effective production plan for the realization of the design is a significant element of the

7. City of Fredericton Seeks Nominations for Intercultural Award
The City of Fredericton is accepting nominations for the third annual Intercultural Award. The award was created to recognize an
individual, group or business that has demonstrated a sustained commitment and effort to enhance Fredericton’s cultural-diversity and
inclusiveness.
Nominations will be evaluated based on criteria that include:





Promoting cultural diversity awareness, harmony and understanding;
Building skills and knowledge of newcomers to allow them to participate fully in our community;
Engaging international students and youth so they feel connected to the community and want to stay;
Encouraging involvement of newcomers in sports, the arts, and other community programs creating a sense of belonging;
Business mentorship to immigrants to allow them to successfully start a new business, and more.
Nominations can be submitted by any interested party, excluding family members of the nominee. Self-nominations cannot be accepted.
Nominations will be reviewed by a selection committee and the award will be presented at a Fredericton City Council meeting.
