The perfect Autumn weather brought over 80 residents, family members and friends together for a festive time on Wednesday October 8th. Several enjoyed dancing and even more groups at the tables held hands and swayed to and fro to the catchy music. The 16 member “Al Kaly Shriner Polka Band” was quite lively and donated time and talents. Primrose gave a record $751.00 to help children who need hospital care. The Life Enrichment Team, with fantastic support from Volunteers Nancy Stutz, Carol Campbell, Frank and Sheila Lee, served up Beer, genuine German Wieners, Potato Salad and Pretzel Rolls. Life Enrichment Assistant and “Berlin-born” Heidi Brooks created the idea of having an Oktoberfest Queen, and this year the lovely Ann Leach was crowned Queen of the Fest with two of her sons and daughter-in-law present to witness the honor. It was a logistical miracle that involved an amazing staff to erect tents, move chairs, tables and residents to enjoy this beloved annual tradition. RESIDENT SPOTLIGHTS Evelyn Dickson has lived most of her life Fall was a perfect time to drive up with both the Primrose bus and car to the lovely home of John and Kathy Leach in Beulah. Ann treated the gang to a picnic lunch of fried chicken and cole slaw, and everyone dined al fresco on their expansive deck. The hospitality was wonderful. Many joked about not wanting to leave this oasis. The visit ended with a short drive to the tip top of Signal Mountain where viewers could see almost to Kansas. this is living at Primrose! The Travel Club’s Trek! The Primrose Travel Club went on another adventure this month…to Orlando, Florida, and Disney World! The group, consisting of Bernie Karpinski, Donna Samuelson, Doc Turman, Nancy Stutz, Jane Boykin, Connie Pagano, Gina Drown, Heidi Brooks, Ashlee Ensley, Mike DeCarlo, Jackie DeCarlo, Elliott Woods, Lois Williams and Laura Ensley, departed on October 22, for a 7 day magical trip! The group visited all 4 Disney Parks in Orlando – the Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom. They also went on the Keys to the Kingdom Tour which took them backstage at the Magic Kingdom and underground to see how the Utilidors at the Magic Kingdom are used. In addition, they went to Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party and got to experience some things that an everyday visitor to Disney does not get to see. The staff that went dressed up for the Halloween Party as the characters from Winnie-the-Pooh. What a hoot. The trip was one that none of them will ever forget… from the attractions and the rides to the nighttime light shows and fireworks…every experience was incredible! Mickey, ….we hope to “See Ya Real Soon”... in Pueblo. She attended Pueblo Jr. College, took business and secretarial courses, and was employed by Pueblo's School District 60, where she began working while still attending high school. She spent most of her career in the superintendent's and maintenance offices at Central High School. Evelyn met her future husband, Morton Dickson, Jr., after he returned from WWII Army service. Morton served in the Aleutian Islands and Okinawa for 4 years. When he returned home in February 1946, they ran off and married in Albuquerque, NM. The couple and their three sons enjoyed Boy Scouts together; Morton was Boy Scout Master and Evelyn assisted. During the Dicksons’ 27 years of service, 27 Scouts earned Eagle Awards, and most earned God and Country Awards too. Dickson family vacations typically merged with Scout Camp, where Evelyn cooked and helped with awards. She also enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting, and embroidering. The Dicksons' sons are Morton III, a retired music teacher in Woodland Park; Richard, a retired government radiation safety specialist who lives in Idaho Falls, ID; and Mark, an attorney and chemist who lives in San Mateo, CA. In addition, Evelyn and Morton have 7 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. The Dicksons watched Primrose being built and saw the first finished apartment. Evelyn moved here in April, while Morton moved to the Pueblo VA home where he resides today at age 94. Welcome Evelyn! Jeanne Bates has lived a very active and enjoyable life. She was married for 62 “treasured” years to Jim Bates, a career Army Colonel, who died 3 years ago. Their two sons are Raymond, who lives in Parker, and Kenneth, who lives in Arizona. Jeanne has 4 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Born in Denver and schooled at St. Mary’s Academy, Jeanne met Jim while she was a twelfth grader. She graduated from the University of Denver, where she was a member of Sigma Kappa. She taught primary school; however, because Jim participated in 4 wars over 30 years, Jeanne’s career became one of supporting her husband’s military endeavors--whether in Germany, France, the Philippines, or various posts in the U.S.A. The family stayed in tent housing, and Jeanne did whatever was necessary for the household, especially when Jim was gone for months at a time. She interpreted French and aided service wives and children in becoming acclimated to foreign cultures and conditions. She assisted with evacuation of women refugees escaping from the American Embassy when Saigon fell, and she helped find sponsors for those who got out. She earned a medal for her assistance. Jim’s last military assignment was Commander of the Pueblo Army Depot during 1976, when the family moved here and happily settled into much civic work including the River Walk (HARP); Pueblo Economic Development Corporation (PEDCO); Rotary 43; Chamber of Commerce tourism, and more. Jeanne has started riding clubs wherever she has lived. Her hobbies include teaching English riding for British Pony Club, fox hunting, and driving antique buggies. She has also enjoyed being a church organ- ist, participating in choirs for 75 years, traveling, master gardening, and cooking. She was a Sangre de Cristo Art Center volunteer for 25 years and president of Chapter FW, P.E.O. 3 times. Jeanne learned of Primrose as she and Jim watched it being built. Coming here was Jeanne’s 29th move. Welcome Jeanne! HAPPENINGS AT PRIMROSE New Fireplaces! What a nice surprise that just as the temperature began to drop, we have two new gorgeous fireplaces that give out a toasty amount of heat. One is located on the second floor B wing where Nancy has found this to be her favorite spot to curl up with a book or I-Pad. The other one is on A wing third floor. We enjoyed the new fire pit with s’mores in the courtyard. Reminder, residents and family members can use the gas grill out in the courtyard. Also in October Primrosers had a blast tail gating before the CSU-P football game and then watched our team win. Thank You and Nice Job, Mike & Gina :) EVENT HIGHLIGHTS LUNCH BUNCH TO MR.
