Honoring Veterans
One of the most enduring memories from our family’s last trip
to France was an afternoon spent wandering through the Normandy
American Cemetery, on a bluff overlooking Omaha Beach. Rows of
graves, marked with simple, white marble crosses and Stars of David, stretched in seemingly endless rows in every direction, each a
monument to a young life sacrificed in defense of an ideal.
This month, we honor those who have set aside months and,
sometimes, years of their lives to defend our country and, more
broadly, the ideals of liberty and freedom. While the recognition
that we bestow on them on Veterans’ Day serves as an expression
of thanks for their period of military service, it is more broadly a
tribute to their willingness to place ideals above concerns for their
personal safety, and, a commitment to the general welfare above expedience or convenience.
Here at Congregation Beth El, and in the broader Jewish community of Eastern Connecticut, we have among us an impressive
number of individuals who have dedicated significant effort and
time to defending the United States and standing up for values we
hold sacrosanct. In some cases they served during periods of active
conflict – in Europe, in the Pacific, in the Middle East. In other cases, they served our country or Israel in times of relative peace, when
the existence of a standing army and the credible threat it projected
made possible the constructive endeavors of peacetime.
The Torah, though hardly a bellicose document, emphasizes
the importance of employing – or being willing and able to employ -- force in the pursuit of certain delineated goals, among them the
protection of our homes, loved ones and way of life. The Torah is
quite specific about how an army is to be raised and what constitutes
a legitimate and ethical military campaign (see especially Deut 20).

* Beginning the weekend of November 1st, the Mincha service will immediately follow the Kiddush luncheon
(approximately 1:00 p.m.). We would appreciate the congregation’s support in budgeting just a bit more time
on Saturday midday to ensure we have a minyan for those reciting kaddish. Ma’ariv/havdalah will be held at
7:30 p.m., often accompanied by a meal or social program (stay tuned for details).
MINYAN REQUEST
Most of our snowbirds have migrated south leaving our daily minyans short of the necessary number of participants. This is a request to every member of the congregation. We are the only regular minyan in this area
and are here for the needs of the entire Jewish community. Please consider attending the daily minyan, even
if only once per week. If everyone joins in, then the commitment of the entire congregation will make it possible to provide a minyan for all who are in need of it.
Minyans are held daily (Monday - Friday) at 7:00 a.m., daily (Sunday - Thursday) at 7:30 p.m.,
and on Sundays at 9:00 a.m.

Eastern CT, Along With Over 500 Communities
Across 6 Continents, to Participate in 5th Annual Historic Event
Our community is taking part in Rabbi Steinsaltz’s Global Day of Jewish Learning because we
understand the importance of Jewish unity. Eastern CT, made up of the Jewish Federation of
Eastern CT and area synagogues including Congregation Beth El, will be delving into the
meaning and importance of this year’s theme and joining with Jewish communities worldwide in
support of Rabbi Steinsaltz’s mission to provide access to our foundational texts.
The Fifth Annual Global Day will focus on “Heroes and Villains, Saints and Fools: The
People in the Book.” Questions to be explored include:

How do we use – and misuse – our talents?
How do we create “oneness” in our relationships?
What makes a leader?
How do we build a just society?
The Jewish Federation of Eastern CT will host the Global Day of Jewish Learning from
2-5 p.m. at the Zachs Hillel House on the campus of Connecticut College in New London.

Beth El Book Club
Sunday, Dec. 14th at 10:00 a.m.
After years of enjoying a professional reading group, a couples’
book club, and a science fiction book group, I had a thought, since we
are the people of the book and a bibliophilic people, that it might be fun to have a book club
at Beth El. To my delight, I was wrong when I assumed that the Waterford library would not
get books for us if we did not meet there. They actually do get books for several non-library
book clubs.
We will begin by reading a book suggested by Rabbi Safman by Yossi Klein Halevi,
Like Dreamers: The Story of the Israeli Paratroopers who Reunited Jerusalem & Divided a
Nation. Yossi spoke here several years ago when he also spoke, and was shocked by, the
so-called Tree of Life Conference in Lyme. He is a thoughtful, centrist person who thinks
deeply about Israel and the Middle East. Rabbi Safman had said that she’d like him to
come to speak. That should be doable as he comes back (he made aliyah years ago) regularly to speak throughout America.
Since we hope to have him here, people may wish to get their own copies for him to
autograph. I have asked the library to order and reserve 20 copies for those who don’t
want to buy one. Around mid-November you will be able to obtain a copy at the Waterford
Library by requesting one at the circulation desk held for the "Beth El Book Club." The
book is also available on Kindle. In the dark months, I thought we’d meet Sunday mornings. This means parents who bring children to Hebrew School can join us and the light will
make it easier for us older drivers. Once the clocks change in the Spring, we can consider
another time.
We will hold our first book club meeting on Sunday, December 14th at 10:00 a.m.

Aficionados of American colonial history will be delighted with AMERICAN OVERTURE: Jewish
Rights in Colonial Times written by Rabbi Abram Vossen Goodman. This meticulously researched volume follows the development of religious and civic freedoms for various small Jewish communities during
the 17th and 18th centuries of development of key settlements throughout the original 13 colonies. Special
emphasis is placed on Newport, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Georgia.
Rabbi Goodman develops the narrative against the religious and social backdrop of the times;
bringing out the vastly varying temperaments regarding religiosity, the right of personal conscience, collective belief in Jesus as Messiah and the Holy Trinity. Jews were not alone in struggling for universal rights;
frequently Catholics (usually referred to as Papists), Quakers and other denominations were barred from
full equality as well.
The most difficult environment was in New Amsterdam which later became New York. During the
governorship of Peter Stuyvesant, it took 10 years on a step by step basis to gain the rights to engage in retail trade, trade in furs, build a synagogue, procure land for a cemetery and to be able to fully participate in
the common defense of the community rather than be afflicted with a special tax in lieu of not being allowed to be a member of the common guard. The most fascinating aspect of this narrative is the detailed
correspondence between Peter Stuyvesant and the directors of the Dutch West India Company which was
headquartered in Amsterdam. Time and again Stuyvesant would write protesting a privilege granted to the
Jews or advocate some new measure to be applied against them and time and again the directors in Amsterdam would rule against him. This was a process that prevailed for 10 years until the British overtook the
Dutch colony.
Rabbi Goodman is a particularly meticulous researcher. In his bibliography he cites 164 primary
sources, many of which are located in various libraries here in New England. And he cites 183 secondary
sources as well. Many of these books, manuscripts and government documents appear to be as fascinating
as this book is itself.

Donate usable eye glasses
There is a Lion's Club International donation box by the synagogue
office window where you can now donate usable eyeglasses. "Recycle for Sight." If
you have any questions, please contact Sam Linder.
From the N.L. Community Meal Center
Always needed are large and small cans of tuna fish, cans of cream of
mushroom soup and large containers of grated parmesan cheese.
Please drop your donations off in the box outside the Beth El chapel.
Volunteers Needed
Beth El serves at the New London Soup Kitchen, located on Montauk Avenue, the 4th
Wednesday of the month. The cooking for the meal is done the Tuesday prior at 1:15 at the
Soup Kitchen. Please contact the office if you are interested in either serving or cooking!
