KANSAS HONOR SCHOLARS
These Plainville High School students represent the
top ten percent of their graduating class: Craig
Garvert, Brianna Casey, and Aaron Fisher. Also

PLAINVILLE HIGH SCHOOL PLAY
Plainville High School will be presenting a
lighthearted adaptation of the famous musical
“Phantom of the Opera.” Tim Kelly’s version is a
clever mix of comedy and suspense including
humorous songs and mesmerizing songs from the
movie. November 13 is the ½ price matinee at 4:00
and evening performances are November 14 and 15
at 7:00 pm. If a performance cannot be presented on
one of those dates, a make-up date is scheduled for
Sunday, November 16 at 2:30. Admission is $3 for

adults, $2 for JH/HS students, $1 for GS, and under
age 5 is free.
Minerva Hotchkiss (Mykeltie Horting) must sell
the Roseville Opera House due to negative critic
reviews from Silvia Acidtongue (Emily Vohs) and
rumors of a phantom lurking within its corridors.
The new owner, Louisa Pampermouse, (Ashton
Royer) has hired the prima donna opera star
Carlotta Barracuda (Rachael Bickmore), the lovely
chorus girls Zaza, Mimi, and Lulu (Megan
Sherradan, Paige Sherradan, Makayla Loney), the
Dixie Chicks (Amy Casey, Bailey Werner, Tori
Branch), and country western dancer Nolan Sinclair
to perform for her grand opening. Carlotta’s
understudy is the lovely Christine Swansong (Elena
Hageman) who dreams of a musical career. The
spooky Phantom (Aaron Fisher) falls in love with
Christine and poisons Carlotta so Christine will sing
in the gala event but Christine must never see the
love of her life, Lt. Farleigh Good (Dalton
Benedick), ever again or – doom! Christine is
kidnapped and taken to the dungeon where Connie
Copper (Sarah Miller) and Lt. Farleigh try to rescue
her. Carlotta’s mother, Madame Barracuda (Valerie
Cole) and Christine’s mother, Mrs. Swansong,
(Tonya Widner) are defensive and over-protective
of their daughters. Dora (Alexis Oliver) is Carlotta’s
disgruntled personal assistant who needs the job
regardless. Stage managers (Jasmine Creighton and
Bethany Brown) encounter a couple dead
employees (Ryan Hageman, Trevor Sutter) and the
cleaning lady, Guppy Gopher (Taylor Westhusin) is
always screaming at something. Creepy rat catchers,
Henrietta and Hazel Rainwater (Dakota Rogers,
Brooke Werner) keep everyone on their toes,
literally. Culture vultures, Felicity Van Loon and
Flufferduff Chipstrap (Courtney Crawford, Shanaya
Brumitt) adore and worship Carlotta Barracuda,
even to the point of rescuing her from the
plummeting chandelier. Along comes Salome
Dibble (Mykeltie Horting), the phantom’s lunatic
sister, to put an end to all the chaos.
We are fortunate to have Craig Garvert and
Dakkota Brown controlling the music, sound
effects, and mics. Mali Werner brings superb
previous experience in prompting. Jessie Gilmore
pulls the curtains and operates the fog machine.

Kindergarten is “Kicking Off” a
Great Year!

Greetings from Mrs. Hovis’ kindergarten
class! We are so excited about learning this year!
With 18 eager-to-learn students in our class, there is
never a dull moment! We have already learned so
many new and exciting things to help “grow our
brains”. We have also worked very hard on
following the rules, learning about how to treat
others, and our daily kindergarten routine.
Each day we focus on many new concepts.
We have learned about numbers and quantities in
our math curriculum. In reading, we are learning
about sounds that the letters make, blending those
sounds to make words, rhyming, and counting the
sounds and syllables we hear in words. We have
also been reading, reading, reading!! Learning
about how good readers think about characters and
setting, retell the stories they read, compare and
contrast details in the story, and classify information
are just a few of the concepts we have already
begun learning about this year.
As November begins, we can say the first
quarter has flown by for us in kindergarten for sure!
As the saying goes, “Time flies when you’re having
fun!” We would agree! Kindergarten is a great
place to learn and play! Stop by and see us
sometime, we are always excited to show everyone
what “SMARTIES” we are!
Biology II, Anatomy & Physiology, Biomedical
Innovations, and Chemistry

The courses of Biology II, Anatomy &
Physiology, Biomedical Innovations, and Chemistry are
taught in Rooms 203 and 205 of the high school.
Currently, there are 28 students enrolled in Biology II,
23 students in Anatomy & Physiology, 28 students in
Chemistry, and 10 students in Biomedical Innovations.
Biology II is the second science class that
students are required to enroll in at Plainville High
School. As biology is the study of life, students cover a
wide variety of topics ranging from the structure of cells

and tissues to ecology and how living organisms interact
with each other. The first semester of Biology II entails
such topics as: scientific method, classification of
organisms, cells, cellular transport, microorganisms,
DNA and RNA, and genetics. There are many laboratory
applications that are also included with the topics
discussed in the course.
Chemistry is a junior/senior level course that is
the next science course students can take after Biology
II. A great deal of concentration and effort is put into
providing the students proper laboratory skills. Safety
and proper technique are stressed greatly in Chemistry.
Also, many math skills are required as we cover a
variety of topics concerning matter and the changes that
it undergoes.
Anatomy & Physiology is a senior-level course,
although juniors may enroll in the class. It is taught as a
college-prep course with a large percentage of the
student’s grade based on test scores. Throughout the
course of the year, students will cover various systems of
the human body, concentrating on how the systems
function, why they are important, and potential disorders
of the systems. Many students enrolled in Anatomy &
Physiology are considering medicine or a medicalrelated field as a potential career choice.
This is the third year that Biomedical
Innovations has been in the curriculum at Plainville High
School. It is the final course for students who are
following the Biomedical Career Pathway that has been
implemented at PHS. Students who are enrolled in
Biomedical Innovations must have completed or be
currently enrolled in Anatomy & Physiology.
Biomedical Innovations is a hands-on course where
students use technology along with problem-solving
skills developed in previous science courses to analyze a
variety of scientific topics. While the focus of the course
is on health-field related subject matter, the course also
looks at environmental factors that could affect a
community, such as water quality.

Good to Great!

Our district steering committee and administrative
team are reading the book Good to Great written
by Jim Collins. It is about corporations that show
exceptional sustained success and growth and what
great companies share in common that distinguishes
them from good companies. This book has many
important lessons and ideas for the educational
community and is providing the basis for great
conversations among our staff. The book starts out
by saying “good is the enemy of great”. Our staff is
talking about what areas our school is “good”, in
what areas we are “great” and in what areas we
really could improve.
We are just starting our book study but some
interesting results were revealed in the first chapter.
There was no evidence that the good-to-great
companies spent more time on long-range strategic
planning than comparison companies. They did not
focus principally on what to do to become great;
they focused equally on what not to do and what to
stop doing. Greatness doesn’t just happen, it turns
out, it is largely a matter of conscious choice.
Chapter 2 focuses on leadership so the staff will be
reading about the characteristics of good-to-great
leaders and how our leaders can lead our schools to
greatness.
All of us at USD #270 want our school to be a great
school, not just a good school. We have
established student outcomes that we are committed
to meeting. We also know that we will need
support from our community to achieve greatness.
Throughout this year, I will be sharing information
from the book with you and I hope you will think
about how our schools can be great and share with
us your ideas. We look forward to hearing from
you.
