28 WORLD SPORT James revenge as Cavaliers win team. Gulf Daily News Sunday, 2nd November 2014 Email: [email protected] CHICAGO: LeBron James simply wanted to shrug off a poor debut with his new, old How is this for redemption? James scored 36 points and the Cleveland Cavaliers beat Derrick Rose and the Chicago Bulls 114-108 in overtime on Friday night. The first meeting between two teams expected to challenge each other for supremacy in the Eastern Conference was as tight as advertised, with several swings down the stretch and a superstar carrying his team in the end. James was at his best after struggling the previous night. He scored eight points in the extra period, and the Cavaliers gave coach David Blatt his first win after opening with a loss at home to New York. “It was an opportunity to go out and redeem ourselves and I was happy with the outcome,” James said. Derrick Rose scored 20 points for Chicago, but his first meaningful home game in about a year was spoiled by a sprained left ankle and a dominant performance by the Cavaliers’ megastar. Rose, sidelined for most of the past two seasons by knee injuries, came up hobbling in the first half and headed to the locker room in the fourth quarter. “The gods, they’re testing me right now, man,” said Rose, who did not think the injury was serious. Cleveland rallied from five down in the closing minute of regulation after blowing a ninepoint lead to start the fourth quarter. James took over in OT, flip- n Cavaliers’ James shoots over Bulls’ Taj Gibson ping in a wild reverse layup and scoring Cleveland’s first eight points in the extra period. The Cavaliers were still clinging to a 106-104 lead after Kirk Hinrich hit two free throws with 46.8 seconds left. But Tristan Thompson iced it moments later with a hard dunk after rebounding James’ jump- BASKETBALL National Basketball Association on Friday (home team in CAPS): Memphis 97 INDIANA 89 Cleveland 114 CHICAGO 108 (OT) MILWAUKEE 93 Philadelphia 81 PHOENIX 94 San Antonio 89 SACRAMENTO 103 Portland 94 LA Clippers 118 LA LAKERS 111 FIGURE SKATING Skate Canada, the second ISU Figure Skating Grand Prix of the season, on Friday: Men Short programme:1. For Chicago, Hinrich came on strong down the stretch to finish with 20 points. Pau Gasol scored 15 and Mike Dunleavy Jr. added 14 points. Meanwhile, Blake Griffin used a banking analogy to describe his dominant performance against the Lakers. And most of the time the Clippers got the ball to him, he was right on the money. Griffin scored 39 points and went 11 for 12 from the free throw line, powering the Los Angeles Clippers to a gritty 118-111 victory over the winless Lakers in the first meeting of the season between the Staples Center co-tenants. DeAndre Jordan had 11 points and 13 rebounds during a foul-plagued 39 minutes. The two-time defending Pacific Division champions have won eight of nine against the Lakers (0-3) since the start of the 2012-13 campaign, including victories by margins of 36, 48 and 23 points in the final three meetings last season. Chris Paul had 12 points, 10 assists and two steals for the Clippers. Jordan Hill scored 13 of his 21 points in the third quarter and Kobe Bryant had 21, but cost the Lakers down the stretch with his cold shooting. After stumbling out of the blocks with an 18-point loss to Houston and a 20-point defeat at Phoenix, the injury-riddled Lakers are 0-3 for the fourth time since the franchise left Minneapolis. They also lost their first three games last season, as well as 1978-79 and 1960-61 — their first season in Los Angeles. 5 Los Angeles 2 DALLAS (OT) 4 Nashville 2 1 3 MOTOR RACING Qualifying from the Formula One United States Grand Prix at Circuit of the Americas: 1. Sebastian France keep original team for Davis Cup PARIS: Despite their poor results at the Paris Masters, France captain Arnaud Clement is sticking with his regular players for the Davis Cup final against Switzerland. Clement has picked four players — Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Richard Gasquet, Gael Monfils and Gilles Simon — for a training camp in Bordeaux ahead of the final from Nov. 21-23 in the northern city of Lille. He can still make changes to the team ahead of the final although Clement said it’s unlikely he will call up new players at the last minute. “I think about other players too, but in my mind today, those who have a chance of going on court in Lille are the four players I mentioned, and I want to focus the preparation on them,” Clement said at a news conference yesterday. No French player advanced past the third round in Paris but the French captain is adamant he is not worried before hosting a formidable Swiss team led by the in-form Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka. “The players who had to stop because of injuries were able to play,” Clement said. “They played good matches, and that was a good thing. I believe this is positive. Now that they are reassured about their condition, they can focus on the Davis Cup. It is their main goal.” Gasquet, who played a decisive part in France’s win over defending champion Czech Republic in the semifinals, lost in the second round in Paris and has won just three matches in his past four tournaments. Simon’s campaign was stopped immediately by Fernando Verdasco while Tsonga and Monfils bowed out in the third round, against Kei Nishikori and Novak Djokovic, respectively. Monfils, who thought about pulling out from the event because of a knee injury, showed signs of improvement during a tight second set with Djokovic. “Richard is extremely motivated by this Davis Cup. He has his mind set on it,” Clement said. “And I was very pleased with the level of Gael and Jo.” Vettel (Germany) RedBull - Renault 1:39.621; 18.
