Skate Canada-Eastern Ontario Skating Programs portfolio has re-invented the Program previously known as JumpStart. The new
initiative Skater Technical Assessment Recognition Program will still be in line with LTAD but will also comply with Skate Canada
STAR 2 to 5 performance standards. The format and name have been changed to provide young skaters with an opportunity to
develop over 2 to 3 seasons resulting in moving forward to compete in Pre-Juvenile and Juvenile categories. During the three phases
over each season, depending on registration numbers, a group of skaters will be chosen to move forward into Phase 2 and 3 based
on overall assessment and observation.

As before this program will begin in November running simultaneously with the Youth Competitive Development Program
(formerly Youth Camp). There will be a limit of 50 skaters initially, first come first serve.
Unlike previous years Phase One of the program at INVISTA will be a whole day NOT a half day.
Criteria – Skaters should be committed to taking part in STAR 2 to 5 event categories for the 2014/15 Season, therefore
should have a program to music within the STAR 2 to 5 Technical Package/Guidelines for this season (posted on the Skate
Canada Info site (Link: https://info.skatecanada.ca/hc/en-ca/articles/203332210-STAR-1-5-Technical-Package ) – dated

October 6 , 2014).

In the ONLINE Entry Form you will be asked to choose which category your skater will take part in on November 21 , 2014
(i.e., STAR 2, 3, 4 or 5) based on their ability.
Test and Age Criteria – no exceptions will be made regarding the age or test criteria. Skaters (male or female) should be

under 10 as of July 1st, 2014. Skaters (male or female) must comply with the Test criteria as of November 1 , 2014 as set

out in the Skate Canada Technical Package for STAR 2 to 5 posted on the Members Only website (dated October 6 , 2014).
Where possible skaters will be grouped by age/category.

As with previous seasons the first session for skaters will consist of an On Ice Portion with skaters reviewing the Technical
Elements for STAR 2 to 5. The skaters will be broken down into groups and work with our Panel of top-level EO Coaches.
Skaters Coaches will not be allowed on the ice at this time.
In the afternoon skaters will take part in a STAR 2 to 5 simulation competition event before trained Officials and will receive
an Assessment/Report Card. (Remember to bring skaters music)
Skaters will also participate in Off-ice sessions of fitness and/or dance
Skaters and Coaches will have an opportunity to take part in an on-ice seminar with the Guest presenter for the Youth
Competitive Development Program.
If time permits a Parent Information session may be offered.

At the end of the day on November 21 the EO Team of Presenters, Technical Director and Officials will choose 25 to 30
skaters who will then be invited to take part in Phase Two. The Skaters chosen will be notified immediately thereafter by
email.

The Skaters chosen for Phase Two will be asked to participate in either 2015 Winter Skate in Whitby ( January 30 to Feb

1 , 2015) or 2015 EOSIC in Nepean (February 13 to 15 , 2015) or both at their own expense.
The chosen skaters from the Skater Technical Assessment Recognition Program who participate in either or both the above
mentioned competitions will be monitored by our Technical Director and the coach, skater and parent will be given an
opportunity for a one on one session during the event weekend.
After both competitions have taken place and based on results, assessments and overall observation the group of skaters
will be cut down to 15 to 20 skaters and they will be notified by email and invited to take part in Phase Three.

The final phase will consist of another Seminar for the 15 to 20 skaters to take place at the same time as 2015 Gloucester

Spring Festival in Ottawa (April 10 to 12 , 2015).
It will include another technical assessment and parent session as well as an opportunity to compete at Spring Festival at
their own expense.
Individual assessment with our Technical Director for Coach, Skater and Parent with a view to the next step in the cycle –
Summer Competitions in the Pre-Juvenile category with a view, depending on summer results of being invited to participate
in the 2015 Youth Competitive Development Program.

Parents will need to consult with their Skaters Coach in order to ascertain which STAR Event the skater will be participating in on

Scott Davis
Career Highlights:
1993 & 1994 U.S. Men's Figure Skating National Champion
1994 Winter Olympian
ISU Technical Specialist
Level III certified Figure Skating Coach
Scott Davis is the 1993 & 1994 U.S. Men's Figure Skating National Champion. In 1994, he defeated 1988 Olympic gold
medalist Brian Boitano to win the title. Davis represented the United States at the 1994 Winter Olympics, where he placed
8th. Known for his extraordinary spinning ability, Davis was coached by Kathy Casey in Colorado Springs and Galina Zmievskaya in
Simsbury, Connecticut.
After turning professional, he performed with Champions on Ice, Stars on Ice Japan, Feld Entertainment's 'Grease on Ice' and Ice
Castle Theater's 'Footloose on Ice' with Nancy Kerrigan. After graduating from the University of Calgary with a degree in Biological
Sciences, Scott began coaching full time. In 2007, Scott Davis became the Director of Skating at the Calalta Figure Skating Club.
Scott is currently a Level III Certified coach and is the coach and trainer of Two-time Canadian Silver Medalist, World Team
competitor and 2010 Olympian, Vaughn Chipeur. In addition, Scott is one of a select group of ISU Technical Specialists in the world
and has served as an ISU Moderator in the education and training of fellow Specialists. Finally, Scott has been a member of various
committees including the Calgary Sport Council, the Learning to Win Stage of Skate Canada's Long Term Athlete Development
committee, and the United States Athlete Advisory Committee.

Darlene Joseph
Philosophy: I enjoy developing an athlete into the complete package: athletically, artistically, mentally and
emotionally for the sport of figure skating. I continually enjoy learning and sharing my knowledge and passion for the
sport with skaters of all levels. I motivate my skaters to achieve their personal best and enjoy the sport of which they
are so passionate about. I am energized, enthusiastic and passionate and I strive to bring out the very best in each
skater and to develop their fullest potential.
Teaching Experience: 25 years
Certification: NCCP Level 5, Level 3 Pairs Technical; Gold Level for CEP
Area of Specialization: Singles - Freeskate, Skating Skills, Dance and Edge Development, Dance, Off-ice Jumping, Harness work and

Sharon Nixon
Sharon Nixon (M.A., A.B.D.) is a full-time figure skating instructor. After skating professionally for one season Sharon
began coaching fifteen years ago. Sharon has coached three National competitors and Provincial medalists in all
disciplines. Sharon is the co-author of “Success for Skaters: A Yearly Planning Guide and Toolkit for skaters, parents
and coaches” (2003) and a contributing author to Skate Canada/NCCP Level 2 Technical Manual for Coaches (2004).
Sharon attended Can Skate University in 2012 and oversees the new CanSkate program at the FHHSC.
In her spare time, Sharon continues to teach a variety of courses at the college level on a part-time basis and currently
resides in Kingston, Ontario where she enjoys spending time with her husband Ron and two boys Elias and Milo. .

Philosophy: To impart my love of skating onto my students, to ensure they have a safe, happy and healthy skating
environment and to foster their self-confidence and instill a desire to be the best person/skater they can be.

Tara McDougall
Tara has been teaching at Minto SC for 22 years. She was a competitive skater at the Senior level with all her gold tests.
Besides training skaters of all levels to the Provincial, Ontario Winter Games, Challenge and National championships,
she has worked as a personal fitness trainer for skaters at the CanSkate, STARSkate, Competitive and Adult levels. It is
not just about arriving at your destination; it is about the journey along the way.

Dance Dynamics
Diego Arvelo
Mr. Arvelo continued his education in dance, studying the techniques of such greats as Bob Fosse, Jerome Robbins,
and Martha Graham. Since he came to Canada, he has furthered that training by studying R.A.D Ballet as well as
C.D.T.A Jazz and Ballet, as well as Vaganova Ballet Technique. In May of 1998 he became a certified instructor for the
British Association of Teachers of Dance (B.A.T.D).
Mr. Arvelo has spent the majority of the last 20 years teaching ballet, jazz and lyrical jazz technique throughout
Eastern Ontario and Western Canada, and in March of 2002 he opened the doors of D.A.D.X Dance Academy, where he served as
the Artistic Director (2002-2008). With his vast experience in dance training and choreography, he offers an exceptional level of
knowledge and expertise to his students.
In 2004 Mr. Arvelo began yet another creative endeavor with the opening of the Brockville Youth Stage and Dance Company (20042008). His productions included The Wizard of Oz, Peter Pan, West Side Story, Oliver, Grease, and Disney’s Aladdin, each of which
received outstanding reviews. He has also choreographed for the St. Lawrence Shakespeare Festival in their production of “Much
Ado About Nothing”. Mr. Arvelo has also worked as an instructor with the St. Lawrence College Musical Theatre program where he
taught both jazz and partnering work, as well as modern technique. In April 2009, he was given the opportunity to choreograph their
Broadway Style Musical, “Footloose”.

Competition Officials in an event simulation environment. Please select on your entry form which
STAR program level you will be skating at this event. Following your skated program you will
