Dear Parish Family
This weekend we celebrate the Feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica in
Rome.
Are you scratching your head trying to figure out why we are celebrating the
dedication of a church that is not our own….not in our diocese….not even in our country? You’re probably not alone.
So just what is the significance of St. John Lateran Basilica?
It is the Cathedral of the Diocese of Rome. It is the “Mother” church of not only the city of Rome, but also of the world.
This was the first church to be built after Emperor Constantine declared that Christians could practice their religion
freely. This was back in the year 313.
So if this is the Cathedral of the Diocese of Rome, then this is where the cathedra (chair) for the Bishop of Rome is located…and the Bishop of Rome is currently…..Pope Francis.
Well….hopefully you’ve learned a little something now about the significance of St. John Lateran Basilica in Rome.

BICYCLES NEEDED
The Brick

Each year the Freeburg Food Pantry distributes bicycles to families in need for Christmas. As you are cleaning out your garage for the winter, we would be happy to “redistribute” those
bikes that your family has outgrown to someone in need. We
only ask that the bikes be in good condition or in need of minor
repairs only. If you have a bicycle to donate, please call Tony
Erwin at 277-9442 for pickup or drop off. Also, if you would
like to make a monetary donation to help purchase parts for
repairs or some new bikes, you can do so by making out a
check to the Freeburg Food Pantry marked for the “Bicycle
Program”…and drop it in the collection basket.
A young and successful executive was traveling down a neighborhood street, going a bit too fast in his new Jaguar. He was
watching for kids darting out from between parked cars and
slowed down when he thought he saw something. As his car
passed, no children appeared. Instead, a brick smashed into the
Jag's side door! He slammed on the brakes and backed the Jag
back to the spot where the brick had been thrown. The angry
driver then jumped out of the car, grabbed the nearest kid and
pushed him up against a parked car shouting, "What was that
all about and who are you? Just what the heck are you doing?
That's a new car and that brick you threw is going to cost a lot
of money. Why did you do it?" The young boy was apologetic.
"Please, mister...please, I'm sorry but I didn't know what else to
do," He pleaded. "I threw the brick because no one else would
stop..." With tears dripping down his face and off his chin, the
youth pointed to a spot just around a parked car. "It's my brother," he said. "He rolled off the curb and fell out of his wheelchair and I can't lift him up."
Now sobbing, the boy asked the stunned executive, "Would
you please help me get him back into his wheelchair? He's hurt
and he's too heavy for me." Moved beyond words, the driver
tried to swallow the rapidly swelling lump in his throat. He
hurriedly lifted the handicapped boy back into the wheelchair,
then took out a linen handkerchief and dabbed at the fresh
scrapes and cuts. A quick look told him everything was going
to be okay. "Thank you and may God bless you," the grateful
child told the stranger. Too shook up for words, the man simply
watched the boy push his wheelchair-bound brother down the
sidewalk toward their home.
It was a long, slow walk back to the Jaguar. The damage was
very noticeable, but the driver never bothered to repair the
dented side door. He kept the dent there to remind him of this
message: "Don't go through life so fast that someone has to
throw a brick at you to get your attention!" God whispers in our
souls and speaks to our hearts. Sometimes when we don't have
(take) time to listen, He has to throw a brick at us. It's our
choice to listen or not.

ST. JOSEPH SCHOOL ANNUAL FUND
The 2014 St. Joseph School Annual Fund Drive kicked off with
the mailing of the annual fund letters. The proceeds of this
drive will be used to upgrade the school’s computer lab, purchase a new server for our school network, add a new science
curriculum (textbooks and lab materials), upgrade the school’s
PA system, and develop a media center to prepare our students
for the changing digital age. The goal of this year’s Annual
Fund Drive is $30,000. Every donation, large and small, will
help reach our goal and ensure our current and future students
receive a high quality Catholic education at St. Joseph Catholic
School.
PARISH CHRISTMAS POTLUCK/SOCIAL
Our Christmas Potluck/Social will be Sunday, Dec 14th, beginning in the late afternoon in the Parish Center. Our parish family will get together to socialize, share a meal, visit with Santa,
and have some good ole’ fun! The parish will provide the
meat; everyone will be asked to bring a dish. A form for you
to RSVP is in your bulletin along with extras on the back radiators. We’ll be collecting attendance prizes ranging from $5.00$15.00 for attendees of all ages (kids, tweens, teens, ladies and
men), so keep your eyes open for those bargains as you Christmas shop. We’ll also need a few helping hands the day of the
event -- chicken fryers/breaders, kitchen servers, dessert cutters, bartenders, and kitchen cleanup. Sign-up sheets to help

AN INVITIATION TO ALL VETERANS

P.T.F. meeting this week, Tuesday, November 11 at 6:30 PM

The Baptism last Saturday and the welcoming of a new member
into the Church is good reason to continue the discussion about
the Stewardship of Parents. You may wish to review what was
written in the past. The family is a domestic Church and part of
the entire Church community. The father is the lay high priest
of your domestic Church. The concept is rooted in both Old
Testament and recent Church documents. Quite a responsibility
as steward.
Basketball season is underway. If you would like to come out

Christmas Cash raffle tickets are available in the main office or
from the T.W.B. representative at today’s Mass. They are $35
a piece for a chance to win up to $6,000. Only 800 tickets are
sold during this raffle so get those tickets while you can. Winners will be drawn at the December Parish Fish Fry on Friday,
December 12, around 6:30 PM.

VETERANS DAY CELEBRATION
Freeburg, IL would like to invite you and your family to attend

Brothers and Sisters in Christ:
Parents must meet both the spiritual needs and provide for the
temporal (worldly) needs of the family. Keep priorities in order
as to which comes first. Daunting for both the beginning and
seasoned family. BUT our Lord never leaves us to our own
devices unless we close the door on Him. Ponder these points:
Use what we know of the Holy Family as a model.
Actively participate in your response to God's invitation/gift
through your prayers and actions.
Say Yes to God... always. Commit to God's invitation to be cocreator in nurturing and parenting your children... throughout
their lives
Root your family lives and values in God through prayer and
building a close relationships with Him.
Developing that relationship results in God becoming active in
raising our children with us:
Call on God to deal directly with the creature in times of distress. From infant outbursts to worrisome choices and decisions
later in life. God can be in charge.
Be active participants. We must teach our children about God,
His love for us, how He is always in our lives, how to make
good choices, and teaching them that all choices (good and bad)
have consequences.
Use Jesus as our model as parents AND for children.
The manual? Start with the Bible, the Catechism.
May our Lord God bless, guide, prosper and make bountiful the
work of all His stewards. In the name of Jesus Christ we pray.

BIBLE STUDY

Last Sunday we began our study of Matthew Chapters 14 and
15, Matthew's fourth narrative. Readings covered the death of
John the Baptist (Mt14:1-12); the feeding of the five thousand
(Mt14:13-21); Jesus' prayer on the mountain and Peter walking
on the water (Mt14:22-33); Jesus healing the sick (Mt13:3436); Jesus' view of “traditions” (Mt15:1-20); Faith of the Canaanite woman (Mt15:21-28) and the feeding of the four thousand (Mt15:29-39). Not all recalled this second feeding story.
