November – Some Highlights from This Week
We are marching through this term and November has arrived already. There has been a
lot happen this week and a lot still to get through this year.
This week:
• We have hosted an i-Pad course here at school with teachers coming from a variety
of schools in Eastern Southland.
• the children watched the Tour of Southland as it sped through Edendale.
• as a school we had Pet Day.
• as a staff we received professional development in dyslexia.
• as a school community we came together to help frame up the Board of Trustees
charter goals.
• as a staff we had a meeting and began firming up our class lists for 2015.
• as a Home and School we collated and sent away the personalised stationery orders.
It has been a full and productive week for the children, teachers and BOT and Home and
School.

There will need to be some movement in the middle of the year from Team Kea to Team
Kiwi (and maybe Team Kiwi to Team Pukeko) as we make room for new entrants
coming in during the year.
The main point for consideration will come around the Year 4 children as they will be in
adjacent rooms. Please have a conversation with your child’s teacher in regards to
anything that we can take into consideration with the combinations of Year Fours in
either rooms. This needs to occur before this Wednesday 12th November because next
year’s classes will be entered onto reports after that.
Visitors to My Office – Great Learners this Week
Amber and Dustin from Team Kea came by on Friday with
their reading books. They had been reading the story 'Balloons
Go Pop'. They found me their favourite page and read it to me.
When Amber and Dustin grow up they both would like to own a
Mr Whippy franchise and sell ice-creams to people.

Caleb (Team Kereru) and Anthony (Team Kahu) came by
on Monday afternoon with some very delicious lettuce and
vegemite sandwiches. The lettuce was from the school
garden that the boys have been so conscientiously tending.
I had to have two sandwiches as they were so yummy.
When Caleb grows up he would like to be a tanker driver at
Fonterra. Anthony is keen on farming with an emphasis
upon dairying.
Keegan and Richard from Team Kahu dropped by on
Wednesday morning with an i-Pad. They had recorded a
very clever SunSmart Rap. They did very well. They are
uploading this to their blogs to share it with the whole
world. When Keegan grows up he would like to be a rugby
player playing for the Stags as first five. Richard would like
to be a PE or engineering teacher. He likes working with
children and enjoys the outdoors and mathematics.
Asha and Sophie from Team Tui came by on Wednesday
afternoon with their reading work. They were working on
a new design for a flag. Very topical stuff. They included
stars, a kiwi, a koru and a silver fern all on colours of blue
and green. Sophie when she grows up would like to be a
primary school teacher. Asha has dreams of being a teacher
as well. She is also keen on being a vet because she likes
working with animals.
BOARD OF TRUSTEES NEWS
Consultation Evening – Tuesday
On Tuesday the Board of Trustees joined with
teachers and parents to think about our
school’s goals and what actions may help these
goals be fulfilled.
We worked through four important goals,
discussing them and then sharing our ideas
with the whole group.
From there the Board will receive a summary
of the discussion and look to incorporate key
ideas into future actions.

A casual vacancy has occurred on the Board of Trustees for an elected parent
representative.
The Board has resolved under Section 105 of the Education Act 1989 to fill the vacancy
by selection.
If ten percent or more of eligible voters on the school roll ask the Board, within 28 days
of this notice being published, to hold a by-election to fill the vacancy, then a by-election
will be held.

Working Bee – This Sunday
This coming Sunday the Home and School are running a working bee here at the school.
There are a variety of jobs to be done. Some require a tractor. Some a chainsaw, others a
ladder. (Will need chaps, face protective gear, ear muffs etc.)
We look forward to seeing as many as can make it. We plan on starting at 9.00am and
going through to 12.30pm. Any questions contact Mr Warren Ross, the Home and

Pet Day – Tuesday
On Tuesday we gathered as a school at the Wyndham
A & P Show grounds for our annual combined schools’
Pet Day.
The weather was everything in one day but like good
Southlanders we sought shelter when we needed to,
adapted the programme to suit and enjoyed our time
together.
Our children did so well. It was wonderful seeing all
the certificates and then having a strong number of our
children receive special awards.

Swimming – Starting next week
A reminder that our school swimming begins next week. Please check your child’s
learning partnership book for classroom times. Ensure that all children come to school
prepared for swimming.
Menzies College – Teacher Only Day
Menzies College will be having a Teacher Only Day on Friday 28th November. This
will mean that the Mataura Island Bus will not run on this day and parents will need to
transport their children to and from Edendale School. The Homestead and Brydone
buses will run earlier in the afternoon. Seaward Downs bus will run as normal.
Wanted – Plastic Shopping Bags
We need more plastic shopping bags to line our rubbish tins here at school. If you can
help please drop them into the school office.

NEWS FROM TEAM TUI
Kia Ora from Team Tui!
We are already in the middle of Term 4. Wow!
We have been super busy in Team Tui recently with calendar art, pet day art and all of
our end of year assessments.
What a great day pet day was! It was awesome seeing everybody’s pets and there was
some stunning art work and crafts around. (Even if the weather didn’t want to play the
part).
For inquiry this term we have been doing heaps with our kiwiana learning! We have
looked at where New Zealand is on a map, different towns and cities, what makes NZ
special, what the different icons mean and why they are icons! We are now beginning to
look at Japanese cultures and traditions and compare how life in Japan is different to ours
in New Zealand.
In writing we are about to start learning about myths and legends from New Zealand and
Japan. We will progress onto writing our own. Keep an eye out for these over the next
few weeks when they appear on our blog.
Our iPads have been great to have in the classroom this term, especially now that we
have four of them! This has given us the opportunity to learn more about how to publish
work in creative ways, make videos and create photography pieces using photo collage.

The next couple of weeks is going to be busy for us. We will be swimming and then it
will be time to get some serious concert practice underway!
Our website for the week is www.mathletics.co.nz. We are lucky enough to be having
another trial period for this at the moment! This is an excellent Maths site and the
children are loving this programme. It is definitely worth taking the time to check it out!
I hope all of you enjoy the rest of the term and look forward to the beginning of the
festive season!

MOST VALUABLE PUPIL – ARDEN
It is exciting to announce this week’s MVP in Team Tui is
Arden.
Arden is a great role model of the school’s value of persistence.
Every day he will come to school with a smile on his face and
an interesting story to tell.
Arden is a problem solver and is never afraid to give new things
a try! He enjoys taking risks and is always eager to find
solutions to problems and challenges he may come across with
new learning.
His determination and commitment to solving a problem means he normally finds
success with what he is wanting to achieve.
Whenever asked, Arden is always willing to help out his peers in the classroom. Not only
will he make sure that he finishes a task to the end, he will make sure those around him
have too.
His sense of humour and enthusiasm towards school are contagious.

AUTHOR OF THE WEEK – AARON SMITH
Tailing
On Sunday after church we went tailing. First we ate our lunch then we hopped in the
truck. At last we went into a paddock and started to round up the lambs and the sheep.
After that we lifted the lambs up and chopped off some of the ears and poked a needle
through them and sprayed them.
Next we had to put a rubber ring on them so their tails will later fall off.
Then we went back to our cousin’s house and played on the computer.
Finally we went home. I hope I get to do it again.

LEARNING PARTNERSHIP
Giving our children a life-long learning advantage.
This term we are looking at the subtle unproductive behaviours, that some children can
use, which impact upon their progress.
So far we have looked at…
1. Unproductive Learning Behaviour Number 1: Impulsivity
2. Unproductive Learning Behaviour Number 2: Fear Based Inaction
3. Unproductive Learning Behaviour Number 3: Laziness Masked by Excuses
Unproductive Learning Behaviour Number 4: Absence
The Problem: Absence
Some children can have irregular attendance that is not related to illness. In essence they
are truant. They do not have a justifiable reason for not being at school.
When there is a pattern of one day a week it is not long before a child has lost two weeks
per term and nearly a whole term per year. Multiply that over four years and a child can
have one full year less of attendance at school than another child sitting next them. Quite
scary stuff really. You can easily see how repeated absence can put a child behind their
peers.
The Solutions – For us as parents to…
• Avoid being manipulated: Some children are skilled in knowing exactly the right
buttons to press to get mum or dad to budge on attending school. It could be
through tantrum type behaviours or a sudden ‘sore tummy’ or ‘headache’ that soon
seems to disappear once they do not need to go to school. As parents we can give
in to this behaviour and let them ‘take a day off’. Before we know it, it occurs
again and again.
• Understanding that love is equally spelt ‘No’ as ‘Yes”: There is a trend within
our society that equates ‘love’ to indulgence. In other words we as parents say
‘Yes’ to every one of our child’s whims and fancies as we think that is showing
love to them. However, this is imbalanced. Love should be equally expressed
through a balance of saying ‘Yes’ and saying ‘No’. (As a slight aside – so too is
respect.) Should a child desire not to go to school and as parents we know that
school is essential to our child’s successful future, then ‘No’ is an expression of
love that we do not, nor should not, feel guilty about.

Starship – Recycled Phones
We have our collection box out for any old cell-phones you, your family or friends no
longer require. These phones are collected here at school then sent through to Starship

Children’s Hospital for recycling or on-selling. So far schools have saved a whopping
85,000 mobile phones that otherwise would have been destined for landfills in NZ.
Send any old phones along to school and place in the collection box in the office foyer.

T-Ball Season – Starting Soon
T Ball season is upon us again this year. Edendale will again have 2 teams.
The first game is Friday 14th November and all games will start at 5.30 pm. Subs are
$10.00 per child.
Mel Perriam's team is full but there are still a few places left in Blair Sinclair’s team.
If you wish your child to play please give Mr Sinclair a call on 206 6151.
Menzies College Sports Tour & Mataura Licensing Trust - Fireworks Extravaganza
Friday 7th November.
Gates will open at 7-00pm at the Wyndham Racecourse (Postponement date is 8th
November and will be announced on Hokonui Radio).
Entertainment from 7-30pm will include Jenny Mitchell (From NZ’s Got Talent).
Cost is $5-00 per person entry (Pre-schoolers are free). Hot food and drinks will be on
sale. This is an alcohol free family friendly event. Professional fireworks display will
be on after dark.
Glenham School Market Day - Saturday 15th November 10am till 3pm.
Come along to get some books from the book fair, participate in some fun activities and
eat lots of yummy food. There will be a variety of stalls created and run by the students.

School Concerns
We appreciate your comments to help us grow our school. It is wonderful when parents come in early
with concerns, with a positive attitude of working with the school to improve the learning of their child.
Should you find it difficult to approach the school then there are people within the school community
e.g. the Home and School who could come along with you and support you in your concern.
If you have a concern regarding an aspect of your
