You have probably noticed that I always make some mention of the local weather patterns in my monthly letter. This is because I have learned over the years just how ‘weather dependent’ the retail bakery business is. This year the fall season has been cooler and rainier than years past. From my perspective, this is GOOD for business. My dad used to tell me that baker’s ‘pray for rain’, which for a long time I never really understood. Today I have recognized that when we have dreary, cool, rainy days, we see an uptick in our daily customer counts. I believe what we offer consumers is an affordable ‘pick-me-up’ in the form of a tender fresh-baked danish, an indulgent donut, an afternoon brownie or just a hot cup of coffee. With all of the unrest we see in the world today, it is so nice to know that we work each day to offer a small reprieve from all of the doom and gloom we are bombarded with. I wish all of you a prosperous Halloween and Thanksgiving holiday season in your businesses as well as with your families.
