“And God took Avram outside” (Genesis 16:2)
When God promised Avram that his descendants would be like the stars,
He took him outside. Why? God could very well have told him that
message in the comfort of the tent. But he didn’t; He caused Avram to
go out of the tent. The message of Judaism from the days of Avram has
to be taken outside to the world. The Jewish people cannot selfishly
keep the lessons of the Torah to themselves. The place of God in our
lives cannot be kept secret but proclaimed and publicized to the world.
When we go out, look heavenward and see the stars, and point and say
“God is in control of our lives,” then we can shine and be proud of our
Jewish identity.
