Beorn Thursday, November 6th at 7:30 at Beth David Program Title: Ruthlessly and Mercilessly: The German Army and the Holocaust For far too many, the German Army has escaped criticism for its role in the Nazi genocidal project. In this lecture, Dr. Waitman Beorn will discuss the participation of the German Army in the Holocaust in Belarus and Poland. He will focus on the behaviour of individuals at the local level and lay bare the many ways in which the German Army or Wehrmacht was complicit in both the murder and the exploitation of Jews in Eastern Europe. Relying on archival documents, judicial interrogations, oral history and survival testimony, Dr. Beorn paints a disturbing picture of an organization inextricably linked to the extermination of European Jewry. Dr. Waltman Wade Beorn is the Louis and Frances Bluntkin Professor of Holocaust and Genocide Studies and assistant professor of History at the University of Nebraska Omaha. The moral pollution is so great that the limits of divine tolerance have been breached. The world must be purged of its corruption.The Flood is a cosmic catastrophe that is actually the undoing of creation.But God’s chastisement and grace operate simultaneously, so that out of the disaster comes renewal. One righteous man, Noah, together with his family and representative animals and birds are to be saved in order to regenerate the world.” (Nahum Sarna) Following the Flood, our reading describes Noah’s planting of a vineyard,his drinking of the wine he produced, and his resulting drunkenness that leads to his humiliation in the presence of his son Ham. Canaan, Ham’s son, is cursed by Noah for this breech of family etiquette. Why Ham himself is not punished is unstated in the text. Some classical commentators have suggested that the text really should be understood as if it read: “Cursed be [the father of] Canaan.” Nahum Sarna suggests that in the fuller version of events (our Torah reading includes only the sketchiest of details) Canaan likely was implicated in his father’s misdeed. Our Torah reading also includes a “table of nations,” a listing of the branching out of the descendants of Noah, encompassing a geographic perspective “that stretches from the Caucasus in the north to Arabia in the south, from the Iranian plateau in the east to the island of Crete and perhaps beyond in the west - all from the perspective of one centered in Canaan, the future Land of Israel.” (Sarna) A logical consequence of this spreading out of the nations is the diversification of language. Thus, our reading concludes with the story of the Tower of Babel, explaining the evolution of different human languages and the resulting breakdown in international communication as a consequence of the sinful attempt to build a tower reaching the heavens, a goal whose arrogance, if nothing else, brings down the wrath of God.
