The center plays a vital role in the health and well-being of seniors in the community. At the Elk River Activity Center there is something for everyone. Whether its playing cards with others, attending one of the many trips we offer, participating in a fitness class, or informational seminar, we’re sure you’ll find something that is right for you! Senior Scene November 2014 | 7 Health and Wellness File of Life - Every Second Counts An ambulance soars past traffic as the medical team races toward the home of a senior citizen. When they arrive, the senior is unconscious and they have few facts to go on. Does the patient have any existing conditions? Is he taking any medications? Does he have allergies? Medicare Help The FILE OF LIFETM card enables medics to obtain a quick medical history when a patient is unable to offer one. The card offers a mini-medical history posted on the outside of one's refrigerator and/or carried in a wallet or purse. Information such as medications, health problems, and contact numbers are included. Whether you are new to Medicare or need to re-enroll, Stan Denne, a trained insurance counselor from the Central MN Council on aging will meet with you to compare plans and find the most cost effective plan for you. December Foot Clinic The Activity Center hosts the Senior Helpers Foot Clinic every 6 weeks. The next foot clinic at the Activity Center will be on December 8 from 9 am - 12 pm. Chair Massage Therapy Have you ever considered adding a chair massage to your health program? Chair massages help to improve circulation, reduce pain, and enhance restful sleep. Chair massages also help to ease symptoms associated with Parkinson’s, arthritis, peripheral vascular disease, and diabetes. Tiffany Determan, of Back to Nature Massage Therapy will be at the Activity Center to offer chair massages at a reasonable cost. You must call the Activity Center at 763.635.4500 to register for your chair massage. Fees are payable directly to massage therapy provider. Insurance plans do not cover these sessions. Support topics including holiday stress, wandering, caring for the caregiver, where to find respite care, resources, etc. will all be included. Brain Injury Support Group This new group is open to all ages and is for all types of brain injuries. Come and find help and support from others as you journey through this. This support group meets on the 3rd Monday each month. Fri Nov 21 Fee: Free Parkinson’s Support Group This group is for people who have Parkinson’s as well as their spouse, care partners, siblings, children, and friends. Adult Basic Education Clerical Assistant - Assist the Adult Basic Education instructor at Handke Family Center in Elk River to process a variety of clerical projects which may include filing, copying, word processing, data entry and organization of materials. Volunteer needs to be a self-starter and able to quickly interpret how a task can best be done. 2-3 hours per week, Fri AM, Wed/Thurs PM or Tues evening best. Hospital Volunteers – Fairview Northland Medical Center in Princeton seeks volunteers for a variety of positions throughout the hospital. Volunteers fill a variety of Greeter positions in various departments. They also assist with clerical, inventory and delivery projects on the campus. Most shifts are 3-4 hours on a weekly or semiweekly basis.
