And this is good for us. Researcher Linda P. Fried M.D., at The Johns Hopkins Medical Institution, suggests that giving provides “meaningful improvements in one’s own mental and physical health.” Dr. Fried, who is the Director of the Center on Aging and Health at Johns Hopkins, goes on to say; “Giving back to your community may slow the aging process in ways that leads to a higher quality of life in older adults.” Giving of one’s energy, time and money to assist other people and certain causes positively matters. It matters not only for the one receiving the gift but also the giver’s well-being. When we take the time to engage in the journey of others, to step into their shoes, to walk in their steps, we forget about our own concerns and ailments for a while. The mutual benefit seems to be “wired” into our being and we find it is good for both the body and the soul. The season of Thanksgiving can once again engage us and our respective communities with the power of giving. Let’s encourage each other to practice this gift of giving knowing that it complements our original design and enables us to live holistically. Blessed Thanksgiving, Grace and Shalom, David Knibbe “When you become detached mentally from yourself and concentrate on helping other people with their difficulties, you will be able to cope with your own more effectively. Somehow, the act of self-giving is a personal power-releasing factor.” -Norman Vincent Peale 2 The Commons | 480 State St. | Holland, MI 49423 | 616-396-7100 Volunteer Evergreen Special Events are coming up and we need you! Listed below are the dates. Josephine Gonzalez Rodriguez & Christina Rodriguez Scarpino Having spent nearly 30 years serving non-profit organizations, I have never been a part of such an amazing place as Evergreen! As the Director of Development, please accept my thanks for your past support of our programs and services. Since July, I have learned so much about what it means to live fully as we age in place. I recall my grandparents wanting desperately to live in their own home even as they reached 90 years of age. Our family was determined to see those wishes met. When I look around Evergreen, I picture my grandmother playing cards, taking dance lessons, or in a Tai Chi class. My grandfather… well, he would spend most of his time in the wood shop or shooting pool and telling stories with the guys. Unfortunately, where my grandparents lived, there was no Evergreen. Frankly, there are few places in the country like this! Our community is blessed to have a place for all of us age 50 plus. When you look around The Commons, The Fitness Center, The Day Center or in the homes of our In-Home Care clients, you can see what you have helped Evergreen accomplish over the years. With your support, YOU have kept Evergreen strong for almost 30 years! As we continue on this journey to serve older adults for the next 30 years, think about how you can support Evergreen through a financial gift or by leaving a legacy gift in your will or trust. Please stop by to talk about your involvement in supporting Evergreen. My office is located just off the elevator on the second floor, or call 616-355-5122 or email me at [email protected]. Along with the organ and piano, the choirs will be accompanied by a large brass and percussion ensemble. The program will include music especially designed for the old-world acoustics of the beautiful St. Adalbert cathedral. Music by Vaughan Williams, Haydn, Adolphus Hailstork, Randall Thompson, Virgil Thompson, and many others will be presented. Sounds from the balcony, aisles, and front of the auditorium produced by each choir alone, as well as together with and without accompaniment instruments are sure to delight everyone in attendance. Calvin Langejans and James DeJong are conductors for the afternoon. A free-will offering will be received. The reACTORS are a theatrical group who love to perform, but “hate” to memorize lines. So they select skits, mostly humorous, and bring the characters alive by “reading” the script. They use their facial expressions, gestures, voice inflection, and some costumes to entertain their audiences. The stories they tell come “alive” to create a thoroughly enjoyable program. That said, the reACTORS are looking for YOU to join their acting troupe! They meet every Thursday from 3-5pm in the Study Hall right here at the Commons of Evergreen. You can check them out on Friday, December 5th at 11am when they perform after the Holiday Breakfast here at the Commons. This has always been their end of season program featuring fan favorite skits with a little Christmas sprinkled in! ANTIOXIDANTS One brain-healthy component of diet and nutrition is antioxidants, which are food compounds that are most commonly found in vitamins C and E and beta carotene, a form of vitamin A and what gives carrots their orange color. These chemicals rid the body of free radicals, which develop when the body metabolizes food as well as through daily exposure to the environment. Free radicals can damage cells. Foods that are darker in pigment have higher levels of antioxidants. Vegetables that are high in antioxidants are kale, spinach, brussel sprouts, alfalfa sprouts, broccoli, beets, red bell pepper, onions, corn, and eggplant. Fruits that are known to be high are prunes, raisins, plums, oranges, red grapes and cherries. Berries stand out as the superstars! OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS Research on omega-3 fatty acids has found that they are an area of food nutrition that is vital for brain health. These fatty acids are most commonly found in certain types of fish, especially wild salmon, sardines, trout, whitefish, tuna, swordfish and mackerel. What if fish is not your favorite food choice? Try to eat at least one serving per week and also incorporate regularly into your diet flaxseeds, almonds, and walnuts. DARK GREEN, LEAFY VEGETABLES “Eat your vegetables” is an important brain health comment. Dark green, leafy vegetables such as spinach, kale, collard, mustard, and turnip greens are high in folic acid or folate. Australian research found that eating foods rich in folic acid is associated with faster processing of information and memory recall. OTHER AREAS OF IMPORTANCE IN NUTRITION Water Aging can cause your ability to detect thirst to decrease; therefore, drink water even when you are not thirsty. Dehydration can have a negative impact on mental performance. Supplements One supplement that is generally considered safe and important for older adults is a multivitamin that contains the B vitamins, which are important for maintaining memory. No other supplement has been proven to have a consistent and reliable impact on memory. Curry Studies have shown that curry or, more specifically a spice, curcumin, may have brain-protecting benefits. Curcumin is a powerful antioxidant and has anti-inflammatory properties that enhance memory. Cinnamon Recently, cinnamon has been discovered to have a major impact on brain health. Cinnamon has also been shown to reduce blood sugar levels in people with type II diabetes and reduce cholesterol levels by up to 25%. Thus, cinnamon is good for your brain and body. Coffee For those who enjoy a cup of coffee (or more) per day, there is encouraging research that shows the beneficial effects of coffee on memory. Trying to eat a brain healthy diet? Keep it simple and just remember to eat something from each color of the rainbow. 12 The Commons | 480 State St. | Holland, MI 49423 | 616-396-7100 Care Services Care Services of Evergreen is no longer able to provide the Foot Care Clinic. Non-members/guests $2.00 November 5: Still Mine This film is based on the true story of an octogenarian couple, Craig and Irene Morrison (played by James Cromwell and Genevieve Bujold). Because of changing times and regulations, they are no longer able to make a living from their small coastal New Brunswick farm. And Irene has begun to show signs of early dementia. Against the wishes of their children, Craig, the son of a master shipbuilder who inherited his father’s building abilities, decides to build a more suitable house on their property in which he and Irene can live. Beginning this project with only a design in his mind, he is encouraged by friends to at least go through the regulatory process of building permits and the like. Despite being able to complete this project to more than exacting centuries old standards, Craig ends up hitting one roadblock after another in this regulatory process, which could kibosh this project, and his desire for what he sees as a comfortable life with Irene in their final years. PG-13 for some thematic elements and brief sensuality/partial nudity, 102 min. November 19: Malficent In this new take on the classic Sleeping Beauty story, Maleficent (played by Angelina Jolie), is a beautiful winged fairy growing up in a peaceable forest kingdom, until one day when an invading army threatens the harmony of the land. Maleficent rises to be the land’s fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal - an act that begins to turn her pure heart to stone. Bent on revenge, Maleficent faces a battle with the invading king’s successor and, as a result, places a curse upon his newborn infant Aurora (played by Elle Fanning). The curse destines Aurora to prick her finger on a spindle wheel needle and fall into a deep sleep forevermore. As the child grows, Maleficent realizes that Aurora holds the key to peace in the kingdom - and perhaps to Maleficent’s true happiness as well.
