Promising to break a bad habit or starting a healthy new habit is
difficult. Two thousand years ago the apostle Paul in the Book of
Romans put it this way: “I don’t understand myself. I want to do
what is right but I do not do it. Instead, I do the very thing I hate
... It seems to be a fact of life that when I want to do what’s right, I
inevitably do what’s wrong.” (Romans 7:15)
Our journey into 2015 is still early. If you did make any New
Year’s resolutions, studies have shown that by now about
40% of you have quit. And the remaining 60% of you need
encouragement to keep going. Sociologist and author, BJ
Gallagher, claims that there is no one reason why we don’t do
what’s good for us -- there are many reasons. Therefore, she offers
up a few solutions to get us back on track.
Some would include:
• Keep It Small and Simple. Make a few small achievable
goals and then do them. Get the positive reinforcement from
those accomplishments, and then do it again.
• Drop “should” and “ought” regarding your goals. For
example, instead of saying “I should lose weight.” … say
“I want to lose weight.” Go after what you want. It is a
powerful and clear statement of your true motivation.
• Get an accountability partner. No one can accomplish
your goal for you; however, it is very difficult to do it alone.
Have a friend help in keeping you accountable to the plan
and the commitments you have made to yourself.
• Success looks like progress, not perfection. If you’re
moving in the right direction this is success. It is not about
“perfect” but it is about “progress”. Give yourself some praise
when you move in the right direction.
Lastly, believe you can do it. Don’t expect successful progress if
you don’t believe you can do it. Belief is critical in the emotional
journey of sticking to your plan.
“Living Life Fully” is one of our key focuses for Evergreen and
we look forward to joining you this year in accomplishing this
aspiration.
Grace and Shalom,
Dave

Gardener Gathering at
The Commons
Tuesday • March 10 • 6:00 – 7:30 pm • SH • FREE
Gardeners from the local community have the opportunity
to gather at The Commons of Evergreen on March 10 to

of local gardening professionals, Jeff Roessing and Debbie
Albert, participants will find out what it takes to start plants
at home, as well as best practices for direct soil seeding.
Jeff Roessing lives in Holland with his wife Melissa, and
their three children, Tsepo, Naomi, and McKenna. A

employed as a horticultural therapist at Pine Rest Freedom
House. Debbie serves as vice-president of the Midwest
Michigan Herb Association and volunteers with the

March 11: The Theory of Everything
This movie shares the true story of the most brilliant and
celebrated physicist of our time, Stephen Hawking, and
Jane Wilde (played by Felicity Jones) the student he fell in
love with while studying at Cambridge in the 1960s. Little
was expected from Stephen, a bright but shiftless student
of cosmology, given just two years to live
following the diagnosis of a fatal illness
at 21 years of age. He became galvanized,
however, by Jane’s love, and he went on
to be called the successor to Einstein, as
well as a husband and father to their three
children. Over the course of their marriage
as Stephen’s body collapsed and his academic
renown soared, fault lines were exposed that
tested their relationship and dramatically
altered the course of both of their lives. PG-13, 123 minutes.
March 25: The Good Lie
We treat you better so you’ll feel better.
(616) 396-5233
803 Lincoln Ave, Holland, MI 49423
The Commons | 480 State St. | Holland, MI 49423 | 616-396-7100
You will laugh and cry during this touching drama that shares
the story of four Sudanese children that are orphaned after
their village is massacred in the Second Sudanese Civil War.
This film shows their arduous and dangerous trek through the
plains, as they endure hardship, death and sacrifice all the way
until they reach safety in a refugee camp in
Kenya. Years later, these youths are among
3600 selected for resettlement in America,
only to have the one girl among them sent
to Boston, while the three boys must make
a new life in Kansas City. Together, these
young men must adjust to an alien culture
even as the emotional baggage of their past
haunts them. However, these newcomers,
and their new friend, employment
counselor Carrie Davis (played by Reese Witherspoon), strive
to understand each other in this new home, as they make
peace with their histories in a challenge that will change all
their lives. PG-13, 110 minutes

As You Age:
Optimism and Humor
Optimism is a mental attitude that interprets an event with
the best possible outcome or dwells on the most hopeful
aspects of a situation. There are many benefits of optimism.
It reduces stress, increases self-esteem, increases sense of
life satisfaction and promotes better health. Research has
shown that optimistic people also have better memories.
If you believe that you’ll be able to remember something,
you’ll be more likely to remember than if you had the
pessimistic attitude of “I’m never going to remember that”.
Optimism isn’t necessarily an inborn trait; it can be learned
and nurtured.
The following are a few ways that we can nurture
optimism:
•
Look for the best in every situation.
•
Spend time solving a problem rather than focusing on complaining about it.
•
Focus on what we can control rather than what is out of our control (i.e. the weather).
•
Develop relationships and connect with others who are optimistic.
Care Services
So, what can we do to expose ourselves to more humor and
laughter?
•
Watch funny movies
•
Learn and tell jokes
•
Watch or play with children or with pets
•
Attend the LaughFest on March 12, details on page 4.
Laughter is more than just an enjoyable activity. It is very
beneficial to the body and mind. It doesn’t cost a cent and
it is highly contagious.

Humor is defined as that which is intended to induce
laughter or amusement. Just as optimism has an effect
on memory, so does humor and laughter. We change
physiologically when we laugh. We stretch muscles
throughout our face and body, we increase blood flow and
send more oxygen to our tissues.
Over 80 years of business!
Unfortunately, as we get older, we laugh much less
frequently than children. On average 5 year olds laugh
between 400-450 times a day, whereas adults laugh only
12-20 times a day. Wow! It would be expected that adults
would laugh less than children – but so much less?
