Jim Manning Cody Douglas CONLEY(1991 - 2014) Alter: A Caring Community of Faith Alter High School recently experienced another tragedy in the death of Cody Conley from the class of 2010. Cody is the son of Doug and Joanne Conley and brother to Michelle, Rachel, and Nick. He attended Incarnation Parish and Grade School and played football on our state championship teams of 2008-2009. Cody accidentally died while in Florida for a family wedding. Cody was a close friend to John Endres who died and was buried from Incarnation about a year and a half ago. Faith When ministering to the Conley family in the planning of the Mass of the Resurrection, I heard over and over again how overwhelmed they were with the care, love, and support of the Alter Community of Faith. I want everyone to know how often as president of the school and chaplain to so many teams and cocurricular activities I hear this compliment shared about our entire community of faith. Whether it is food and meals, messages and notes, prayers and Mass intentions, I have heard so many times of the support that families receive and feel in times of stress and distress here at Alter. The deep faith of the Alter community is always there but it really shines in times of crisis and tragedy. CONLEY, Cody Douglas 23, of Centerville, OH died after an accidental fall on Oct. 18, 2014 in St. Pete Beach, FL where the family was participating in a relative’s wedding. Cody is survived by his parents Dwight “Doug” and Joanne (Bruns) Conley of Centerville; siblings Michelle, Rachel and Nick Conley; Grandma Denyne Dietz; Aunts & Uncles Wendy & Robb Evans, Jeff & Cindi Conley, Ray Bruns & Cheryl Anderson, Willie Bruns, Eileen & Bill Tomsich, Robin & Larry Brun, John Bruns & Heather Wendling; Godparents Wendy Evans & Gareth Dickey; numerous close cousins and good friends. In the past 5 yrs Cody was preceded in death by his special cousin Kyle Lawson, grandparents Carl & Fran Bruns and close friend Jon Endres. He was also preceded by grandparents Estel Dwight Conley, Norm Dietz and Ruth (Conlon) Bruns. Cody was born in Kettering Jul. 17, 1991. He attended Incarnation Grade School, Alter HS, Univ. of Cincinnati and was currently working toward a BS in Electrical Engineering at Sinclair. He played several sports and was proud to be the Middle Linebacker for the Alter football program that won back-to-back State Championships in 2008 & 2009. He was fun-loving and adventurous to the end. Among other things, his handsome green eyes, warm smile, strong hugs, deep conversations, bright mind, vibrant spirit and limitless ability to make us laugh will be painfully missed. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a memorial fund that has been established to be used for a special improvement project at Alter HS in Cody’s honor. Donations can be made at www.youcaring.com/ codyconleyfund. Jim Paxson Sr. dies at 81 By David Jablonski Excerpt from Dayton Daily News University of Dayton basketball legend Jim Paxson Sr. has died at 81, UD confirmed. While the mission of the school is primarily for the growth and development of our students in a Christcentered environment, and our students are so generous in all of the clothing and food drives, it is so heart-warming to hear how the entire community lives our mission here at Alter. The Springfield native played high school basketball at Catholic Central and starred for the Flyers in the 1950s before playing in the NBA with the Minneapolis Lakers and Cincinnati Royals. He was inducted into the UD Hall of Fame in 1976. As we approach the Season of Thanksgiving, may we be mindful that the best way to express our gratitude to God for our blessings in life is to share them with others. After all, when all is said and done, we never know when our need and time for support may occur. Tragedies often catch us by surprise. Faith enables us to endure forever. Faith is what Alter is all about. Caring for one another is the best expression of our Catholic Faith. “He was a heck of a teammate, the leader of a great basketball team and a lot of people will miss him,” his former teammate Bucky Bockhorn said. Fr. Jim Paxson’s sons, Jim ‘75 and John ‘79, both Alter High School graduates, also played in the NBA and are members of the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame. He is also the father of Molly ’77, Mike and Maggie ’93. He is the grandfather of Chris Thomas ’99, Melissa Thomas ’02, Katie Laravie ’07, Jacob Laravie ’12 and Joe Laravie ’16. The Knight Times alter UPDATE page 3 From the Principal Lourdes Lambert How Emotionally Intelligent Are You? Dear Families: As you know, it is always our goal at Alter High School to educate the whole student in new and creative ways. This school year, we have set off on a new endeavor at our school in our attempt to continuously improve our school and the quality of education we provide to our students. Our freshman class is participating in a pilot program focusing on exploring emotional intelligence. Research is showing us that emotional intelligence is just as important as intellectual ability because it helps us understand and manage our interactions with others, and we all know how influential relationships are, and how paramount they are to our ultimate success. Basically, if you have high emotional intelligence you are able to recognize and manage your own emotional state as well as read the emotional states of others with whom you interact. By being self-aware and sensitive to the needs of others, emotional intelligence helps you understand and relate better to them, form healthier relationships, achieve greater academic success, and lead a more fulfilling life overall. Though this sounds basic, it is actually a very complex process that allows our students to dig deep within themselves and get to know themselves more fully. This self-awareness will hopefully lead to greater self-management, social awareness, and relationship management. There are many companies that are currently training their employees in emotional intelligence, and I am so enthusiastic to offer our students yet another competitive edge in a very competitive world. I am also excited that our students will have the opportunity to see themselves in a different light – hopefully in the light that they were created. It is my hope that this process will not only yield more emotionally intelligent students, but students who will appreciate themselves and how unique and beautiful they truly are for they were created in our God’s image, and it is His light that shines through them. I thank you for your support of our school and all of our programs. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you’d like further information on our journey and exploration of emotional intelligence. Love and prayers, Lourdes Lambert Principal PRINCIPAL’S COFFEE November 5th 9am Before Mass Cafeteria For parents of prospective students Join Mrs. Lambert for questions about Alter, discussion about Alter’s application and admission process and a tour of the school. Get all your questions answered and join us for Mass - see Alter at its best! The Knight Times alter UPDATE page 4 Campus Ministry Dave Conard From the Library Happenings in Campus Ministry! As we look forward to November and All Saints Day and All Souls Day this weekend, the Church traditionally remembers those who have died. We will have an all-school Mass on Wednesday, November 5th at 10:10 am at St. Charles. Before Mass students will have the opportunity to write names of friends and loved ones they would especially like to pray for. During Mass, these names will be brought forward and we will remember in a special way all those in the Alter community who have passed away. All members of the Alter community are welcome to join us for Mass. Christie Sanderman Alter High School was proud to host young adult fantasy writer Cinda Williams Chima on Tuesday Oct. 21st. In attendance were two English classes, a Creative Writing class, and 47 eighth graders from St. Charles. Cinda is the author of several New York Times bestsellers and her latest fantasy book, “The Sorcerer Heir” was just released last week. Students greatly enjoyed hearing her speak about her experiences as a writer and where she draws inspiration from and we wish her the best of luck in the future! On November 25th, we will have our annual Mass of Thanksgiving. This year we are pleased to welcome Fr. Dan Schmitmeyer, the director of the Vocations Office at The Archdiocese of Cincinnati, as our presider. He will talk to our students about vocations and responding to God’s call in our lives. Applications for summer mission and service trips will be available to students next week. This year we are excited to offer a service learning experience in Mexico in addition to our Guatemala Mission trip that we have offered in the past. Students will be receiving more information about both of these trips next week. There will also be a meeting for interested students and their parents on Thursday, November 6th at 7:00 in the cafeteria. These very informal meetings allow the counselors to meet again with freshmen and check in on how their transition to high school is continuing, answer any questions the students may have, and just help the students to understand the role their counselor plays in their high school experience. all students seniors Another busy college application season is well underway and the Class of 2015 has been doing a fantastic job of staying on top of all the steps in the process. Please be reminded of the following deadlines for submission of transcript requests: • Applications with a December 1st deadline must be received in the Guidance office by Monday, November 3rd. All Students: As always, if a student is experiencing academic challenges in the classroom, contacting the teacher directly to find help is the best way to help relieve the issues. Parents and students are always welcome to talk with the counselors about any concerns here at Alter by calling, emailing, or by making an appointment in the office with Mrs. Rupper. • Applications needing to be mailed prior to Christmas break must be received in the Guidance office by Friday, November 7th. Once sent, it can take several weeks for the university to process as they are receiving many applications this time of year. If at any time there are questions or concerns regarding this often-stressful process, please don’t hesitate to contact one of the counselors or Mrs. Rupper. Planning is also underway for Alter’s annual Financial Aid Night. This informational session provides much need advice and direction on the financial aid process for both public and private universities. The event is anticipated for early December and information will be forthcoming as soon as finalized. The Knight Times alter NEWS page 8 TALKS Our Horizons in Medicine and STEM students were treated to three STEM TALKS in October. Dr. Patricia Abboud, MD, and Division Head at Dayton Children’s and Associate Professor at Wright State Boonshoft School of Medicine spoke early in the month. She shared information on career changes from her own pathway to medical school. Dr. Abboud gave advice about the medical profession and answered questions from students. Next in October’s lineup was Dr. James Ouellete, DO, and Associate Professor of Surgical Oncology at Wright State Boonshoft School of Medicine. Dr. Ouellete’s specialty, robotic assisted surgery for abdominal cancers, was the topic of his presentation to Alter students. Students also viewed videos of surgeries as Dr. Ouellete explained new procedures and talked about cancers of the abdomen. The month of speakers closed with three Alter grads, Jen Hurtibise, Matt Knapke, and Eric Thuney, sharing their experience leading them to medical school. They shared the impact of attending Alter High School and what med school is actually like! They fielded questions from the attendees and shared practical advice. All three are juniors at Boonshoft School of Medicine. Our STEM TALKS continue to encourage our students in the fields of science, engineering, math, and technology. Stay tuned as the program continues! The Knight Times alter NEWS page 9 TURKEY DRIVE The Annual turkey Drive collection will begin Tuesday, November 4th and go through Tuesday, November 11th. Each year we raise about $7,500 to purchase around 500 turkeys to deliver to four different area food pantries (250 at Thanksgiving and 250 at Christmas). This has been a tradition at Alter for over 30 years. We will collect money from students at the end of 8th period each day. The winning homeroom will get pizza and drinks and the top homerooms will receive homemade cookies. We ask students to give up buying a soda or cookies at lunch to donate.
