Grand Knights Message
Brothers,
We met the Pastor’s challenge getting behind the 40 hour devotion. The guest Homilist, Fr Sewickly
even commented about the size of the crowd. It was a great opportunity for reflection and penance.
Thanks to all for your support.
The Italian dinner was simply awesome. Fantastic food and fellowship are hallmarks of 8891 events, and were
proudly on display! Thanks to all that made it a success. We made 95% of the food budgeted profits too. Those
900 meatballs from Lenny, Tony’s marinara, the Sons of Sicily pizzas, the Gamache Gellato, are worthy of high
praise and a big Thank You!
Football Sweeps is having a championship season thanks to Coach Nycz. John reports record sales. He reminds
us that in all fundraisers, our success translates directly to our ability to provide funds for all the worthy causes that
come our way. Thanks Coach!
Rob Galante is optimistic for success in C.O.A.L. program. He reminds all Brother Knights to buy or sell the
chances. Aside from the great prizes, proceeds are used to fund the PA State Scholarship. Here are the links for
information and how to apply for the PA State Scholarship. In addition there will be a couple of hard copies in the
Knights mailbox in the parish office. If your son or daughter is interested in applying for a $3,000 PA State
Scholarship, the DEADLINE IS DECEMBER 31, 2014. NO EXCEPTIONS

Deputy Grand Knights Message
Brothers Knights,
It is just amazing how spending over a week at sea can clear the head. It must be the salty air out
there; it has always worked wonders for me, but not my waist line any more. When the custom
official asked if I was bringing in any food, I replied, “about 3 pounds” and pointed to my waist. They just don’t
have a sense of humor.
It is funny that my cleared up head seems to have little idea about what is going on at 8891. I guess I will find out
when the newsletter is published. Brother Barry Price does an outstanding job at getting everything put together.
He gets the newsletter out on time despite the fact that people like me always seem to be a little late. Barry, a big
THANK YOU for all that you do for 8891. I would like to thank all who worked to pull off the Italian dinner,
especially Brother Chuck Carey who is an exemplary organizer. I am sorry that I missed the event, but I did have
the opportunity to help make a couple of meatballs. A reminder to all that we will be doing breakfast and lunch for
the “Christmas Bazar.” If you aren’t working there, you can always come and enjoy the event. It is a lot of fun.
Our next big Council event will be the Polish Dinner-Dance. Chuck Carey, Gene Kornak, and myself will be
getting together soon to work on the details. The big difficulty last year was that we did not have room for
everyone. So if you have some ideas about getting more seating and still maintaining sufficient dance space,
please let one of us know. The Polish Dinner-Dance will be on February 7, 2015 and there will be prep before the
event.
In closing I would like to say that my lovely wife, Carolyn, never heard of the statement “what happens on a cruise
stays on a cruise.” So if you hear any rumors about me, it is simply a rumor. We all know how things get
exaggerated.
Vivat Jesus,
Don Vosnick, Deputy Grand Knight, PFN
St’ John’s Christmas Bazaar – November 1st
Men,
By the time you receive this Knight Edition the Parish Christmas Bazaar will be less than a week away. As usual,
we will be preparing breakfast and then lunch for the Bazaar on November 1st. A sign-up sheet was passed around
at the October General Meeting. If you did not have the opportunity to sign up, please contact me ASAP. We run
two shifts, a Breakfast crew 6:00-10:30 am, and a Lunch crew 10:30 am – 3:00 pm. Some of our guys stay for the
whole day. The menus for both are generally simple.
Thanks,
Chuck Carey, [email protected]

Faithful Navigator Message
Brother Sir Knights,
On October 18th we held our annual Fall Social at Annunciation Parish in McSherrystown.
The event was catered by La Cucina and the food was great. Thank You SK Al Saenz for chairing
this event.
The Exemplification of the 4th Degree will be on March 22nd at the Holiday Inn Grantville.
Let us all approach our 3rd Degree brothers and present them with the opportunity to advance to the rank of 4th Degree
Knighthood. I now that as 3rd Degree Knights they have achieved their quest to full Knighthood, but they are not yet all
that they can be. Becoming a 4th Degree Knight is a step above and beyond the call of duty in the service to Church and
State. If you need a 4th Degree applications, please see me or any 4th Degree Knight.
Thank You Hanover Council 871 for hosting our October meeting on Thursdays the 16th. The Assembly next
meets on November 20th at St Vincent’s Council #14865 at 8:00 PM with the. Rosary at 7:45 PM.

Pro Life Report
Brothers,
October 9th in front of Planned Parenthood York (728 S. Beaver St.), a few people were
standing on the sidewalk reciting the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. A car slowed as it passed and
finally parked across the street. A lady walked slowly to the prayers. She wore a scrubs top
and pants and had a lanyard for her I.D. badges. It certainly looked as though she was going to work at PP. To the
surprise of all, she stopped to say "hello" and "God bless you" for being there. She is a nurse with one of the large local
health care providers, a nurse who can't understand how our society so casually snuffs out life. She stayed a short time
and then went back to work. She said she may stop by again when she can spend more time praying.
Later in the afternoon, a young couple came to Planned Parenthood. The young man looked a little rough so it was
a surprise to all that as he walked up the ramp to the front door, he turned and also said, "God bless you." He was
sincere. You just never know the impression one or two or a few people can make.
As a Council, we did a pretty good job of supporting the Heart of Mary Pregnancy Center run by Catholic
Charities. Most of you know that it is now closed; however, the Pregnancy and Family Resource Center (PFRC) is
now up and running and more than filling the gap. They have a new location and they have an Ultrasound machine.
They provide Ultrasound services two days a week. They are open Mon - Fri and they are busy. This is great news.
To find out more about them, search "York Pregnancy Center", you'll get their website. If you know someone who
needs help, don't hesitate to refer them. The staff is wonderful.
During October, the St. John's Peaceful Justice Committee collected many items for the PFRC. Farther down the
road, I'm sure they would be glad for any and all donations. Please keep them in mind and in your prayers.
Reminder that we will recite a Respect Life Rosary after the 9:00 Mass (10:15) in Our Lady's Chapel on the third
Sunday in November. That is the November 16th.

Food for Families Update
Food for Families is back on track. We have approximately 335 pounds of food collected to date toward a
goal of 500 pounds, and received additional cash donations at the last meeting of $37 with a cash total of
$274 toward the goal of $500. Great effort thus far Gentlemen!! Please consider bringing non-perishable
food items and/or cash to any of our council meetings to help support this effort.
Thanks,
Joe Grohal

ITALIAN DINNER – Wrap-Up
Many thanks to all who helped with food prep on Mon. Sept. 22 & Fri.
Oct. 3. Lenny Casiero combined all the ingredients for the meatballs using
his own recipe. They turned out great and delicious! We had a dozen or so
folks rolling, baking then containerizing the meatballs, 920 in all. Lead by
Tony Spataro, his delicious sauce was made and the meatballs added to be
ready for the next night’s dinner. We had a steady crowd for the first 2
hours. We were gearing up for the folks coming from the 5pm Mass.
Unfortunately, the huge crowd we expected never materialized. Even so
we had a good showing and we netted $945. Sons of Sicily owners Nick
Falcon, Joe Ferranti & Joe’s mom Marie made all the pizza. They had fun
and we appreciate there help & expertise.
God Bless,
Chuck Carey

the details ironed out and a sign-up sheet will be passed around at the Dec. & Jan. General

A Prayer for our Nation as we Prepare to Elect our Leader
For nine weeks before Election Day, Priests for Life calls upon believers to participate in the “Election Novena” by
saying the following prayer each day:
We thank you for your law,
Which our Founding Fathers acknowledged
And recognized as higher than any human law.
We thank you for the opportunity that this election
year puts before us,
To exercise our solemn duty not only to vote,
But to influence countless others to vote,
And to vote correctly.
Lord, we pray that your people may be awakened.
Let them realize that while politics is not their salvation,
Their response to you requires that they be politically active.
Awaken your people to know that they are
not called to be a sect fleeing the world
But rather a community of faith renewing the world.
Awaken them that the same hands lifted up to you in prayer
Are the hands that pull the lever in the voting booth;
That the same eyes that read your Word
Are the eyes that read the names on the ballot,
And that they do not cease to be Christians
When they enter the voting booth.
Awaken your people to a commitment to justice
To the sanctity of marriage and the family,
To the dignity of each individual human life,
And to the truth that human rights begin when human lives begin,
And not one moment later.
Lord, we rejoice today
That we are citizens of your kingdom.
May that make us all the more committed
To being faithful citizens on earth.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
