Our Leaders
A Horn of Gratitude
Since I’ve returned from Israel this summer, many of you have asked with caring hearts if I am thankful to
be back home in Michigan. On a surface level the answer is most assuredly yes; happy to be reunited with my
family after 7 weeks apart and to be back on home turf. In retrospect also, I have had the opportunity to reflect
and examine my experience in Israel more closely.
The timing is appropriate because though it’s not a Jewish holiday, Thanksgiving offers us the opportunity to
remember, if we approach it in a Jewish way. Usually we approach Thanksgiving in a very American way—we
indulge in a bounty of food, eat until we are ill, and our response to this abundance is not gratitude, but lethargy.

Judaism teaches that thanksgiving begins with our acknowledging the Source of our blessings. Significantly, this
liturgical formula does not stop with acknowledgment. It pushes us forward-beyond the manifest occasion of
thanksgiving to deepened understanding. It does not focus on my harvest, or my good fortune, or even on the
recognition that my good fortune is not the result of my own efforts. It puts all of this in the context of the historical
experience of the Jewish people. The genius of biblical monotheism is that the God the Israelites worship is the God
of history as well as of nature. The essence of Jewish theology ever since the Torah was given to us has been to see
God at work in the world around us and in the experience of our people and the human race.
Jewish teaching does not allow us to become self-absorbed, even when it comes to matters of religion. We are forced out of ourselves, to see
ourselves as part of a whole greater than ourselves. We are part of a people. The essence of Jewish spirituality is not only that it transports us into
the heart of some phenomenon of the natural world-the bread we are about to eat, a piece of fruit, our illness, a rainbow-but that it establishes
the connection between that phenomenon and a universe with wider associations.
While I was in Israel, I kept a journal. I have never been one to “write it down” but I am aware that many value it as a daily discipline. The
great Mussar teachers had a practice of keeping what was called a pinkus – a notebook or diary on their nightstand. They would record their
experiences of the day and the lessons they learned from the previous day’s activities, before retiring for the night. In other cultures as well, such
as Japan, there is a similar practice called “Naikan”. This is a way of life for many, marked by structured self-reflection that, in that culture,
helps develop a sense of gratitude.
Here is an excerpt from my time in Jerusalem:
Today the sirens blared in Jerusalem, Red Alert, Red Alert beeped on my phone app, and if we couldn’t get to a shelter we would take cover in the
stairwells of our apartments. Buses emptied, and a few minutes later as the all clear is given life returns to a kind of weird normal. Now the country
as a whole knows what S’derot has known and lived with for so long. Anxiety is palpable, the chattering heads on television talk to try to analyze the
next steps, to predict the future but no one knows what lies ahead. Troops are called up. And the debate rages about whether the ground war in Gaza
should happen. Here we are, some 75 years later, and Jews are still fleeing enemies who hate us just because we’re Jews. We waited some more, and then
we heard a boom. Then another. Iron Dome shooting the rockets out of the sky. I am grateful for those decades that AIPAC has spent making friends
on Capitol Hill.
In the end, my experience in Israel has left
me incredibly grateful. Grateful for the
opportunity to study and grow at Hebrew
Union College with the support of my temple
and family, grateful for the Israeli people I met
who welcomed me into their homes, their
worlds, and let me see through their eyes, and
grateful for our ancestors who wandered the
wilderness and for the soldiers today who fight
for the sake of our abundance.
Let this year’s secular holiday be an opportunity
for us to create new ways to remember, and
to let our religion infuse our behavior with
the meaning that puts the “thanks” back in
Thanksgiving.

held at Studio A, involved Alexandra and her team
giving manicures and nail art and raised over $750.00.
Alexandra also volunteered the Temple Israel Labor
Day Picnic and at Oakland Family Services.

to raise funds for the Matthew Bittker Foundation to help
fight pediatric cancer. The foundation is named in memory
of Elana’s late twin brother Matthew.

Educational Learning Academy in Detroit.
The school serves students in Kindergarten
through 8th grade with a loving staff and
environment where children are first. Dixon
Elementary/Middle School has a uniform
dress code.

You have been waiting for an opportunity to help and the time has
arrived. Temple Israel and its partnership with the Northwest Activities
Center(formerly the Jewish Community Center) has incredible programs
and projects underway to help sustain this Northwest Detroit Communityin mind, body and spirit! We need your help to continue with our mission
to “Make a Difference!”
We are looking for volunteers for our Blessings in a Backpack Program at
IPA MacDowell. Every Thursday between 12-2pm, we need enthusiastic
volunteers to help pack food for the students. Please contact Brenda Steuer

In addition, we are seeking volunteers for our Monthly Food Pantry which runs the 4th Thursday of
the month from 7:45-11 AM. Just last month, we distributed over 20,000 pounds of food to over 350
families and provided them with a nutritional/educational lecture. This is a rewarding, interactive,
hands on volunteer opportunity and a great way to get immediate fulfillment from giving. Please sign

We also have an exciting After School Program for 16 students from Schulze Elementary, MondaysThursdays from 4-6 PM and are still recruiting passionate people who enjoy working with kids. We
have a very structured and focused workshop/tutoring program in place and are clearly making a

EYEGLASS RECYCLING
Temple Israel is pleased to partner with the Lions Club of Novi in an eyeglass recycling program.
Lions have been collecting glasses for more than 80 years. Refractive errors can be easily corrected
with eyeglasses, yet millions in developing nations lack access to basic eye care services. Lions
have recognized the urgent need for corrective lenses and continue to lend their support to the
Lions Recycle for Sight Program. Congregants may drop off eyeglasses in the drop box at the
Tyner entrance.

Family Judaic &
Archival Museum
Beginning in mid-November, the Goodman
Family Judaic and Archival Museum will
feature a unique exhibit curated by the
Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute
of Religion Museum entitled, “The Seventh
Day: Revisiting Shabbat.”
Temple Israel is part of the Cartridge World print cartridge recycling program, which provides an
easy method for recycling used ink jet and laser print cartridges, while simultaneously supplying
Temple with copy paper.
Want to participate in this exciting program? Congregants may drop off their empty ink jet and
laser cartridges in the collection bins at Temple’s Tyner entrance.
For each ink jet cartridge that is turned in, Temple will receive one ream of copy paper, and for

women were invited to share Hartford’s

was set apart to celebrate women.

Come join The Circle: a service of meditation, relaxation, contemplation
and inspiration led by Rabbi Paul Yedwab and Cantor Michael Smolash.
The mystics of the Kabbalah used meditation to elevate themselves to God’s
presence. We will explore both ancient and modern meditation techniques
to deepen and elevate our own prayer practice. Meditation allows us to
flow with the source of wholeness, and channel that hidden light into our
voices and hearts. Everyone is welcome, from “seasoned sitters” to those

Children’s Library Reading Programs is a great way to enrich family
life while reading Jewish book s with your 1st-3rd grade children.
In coordination with the iConnect weekly themes, take the iRead Challenge:
1ST GRADE READING STARS
All 1st Grade families are encouraged to be READING STARS by reading 6 Jewish
books during the school year and completing 6 READING STAR forms.
2ND GRADE SIFRIYA SOCIETY
The 2nd Grade Sifriya (Library) Society is a reading club to encourage students to read
Jewish books throughout the school year. All 2nd Graders who read 6 Jewish books
and complete 6 SEFER (Book) REPORTS will receive a special prize on the last day
of Religious School.
3RD GRADE BINGO BONANZA
All 3rd Grade students are encouraged to play the 3RD GRADE BINGO BONANZA
by reading at least 5 Jewish books during the school year and completing a BINGO
card. Your teacher will keep your BINGO card at school, but you can also keep track
of your progress at home (see Lauren in the Media Center for an extra BINGO card).
1st-3rd graders can read Jewish books
from their own home library and/
or books from the Hodari Family
Children’s Library. Children can
read the books with an adult (parent,
grandparent, or other book lover) and
return the forms to their teacher by
March 30, 2014. All forms are available

“Are You Missing Something?” – When did you realize that there was something missing
in your life? Yesterday? The day before? We will talk about what’s missing, turning it over
and over in our hands. Then, we’ll look in our hearts to see if something is missing there. At
ACHIM, we will meet in the safety of our circle. We’ll talk about what’s missing and reveal
the deeper meanings for each of us.
ACHIM is a safe place for men to share meaningful thoughts and emotions and move toward
greater strength of character. We’ll meet and catch up with each other over a small meal. We’ll
sing/chant songs from the Jewish tradition. We’ll look for deeper meanings inside ourselves as
we find strength in our brotherhood. All men in the Jewish community are welcome to attend.

participated in this “mitzvah of a lifetime.”

Mosab Hassan (“Joseph”) Yousef was born in Ramallah, in the West Bank in 1978. His father, Sheikh Hassan Yousef, is a founding leader of
Hamas, internationally recognized as a terrorist organization and responsible for countless suicide bombings and other deadly attacks against
Israel. Imprisoned several times by the Shin Bet, the Israeli intelligence service, he came to discover Hamas was torturing its own people in a
relentless search for collaborators. He began to question who his enemies really were—Israel? Hamas? America? Ultimately, Yousef started a
six-year quest that jeopardized Hamas, endangered his family and threatened his life. In his book, Son of Hamas, Yousef reveals new information
