FROM OUR DEPUTY PRINCIPAL Cybersafety—safety for children online Keeping children safe online is important to all of us. The main concerns are: Cyberbullying Scan the QR code or follow the link below to access the Cybersmart parent/carer guide to online safety. Online predators Exposure to inappropriate material Revealing too much personal information There are many fantastic websites (see below for a few examples) with information for parents/carers, which include suggestions to assist in reducing the possible negative effects of online activity. It is important for parents/carers to be aware of what children are doing “online”. Privacy settings are an important tool, as well as secure passwords which are not stored on computers, iPads, iPods and mobile phones. TIPS FOR KEEPING CHILDREN SAFE ONLINE Be aware of wi-fi password security and only share passwords with adult supervision Ensure devices are not stored in bedrooms during the evening Have a central charging location (possibly kitchen, family area) where devices are left when children retire for the night Don’t let your child post or share photos of themselves or personal information on social media Be sure to check if your child becomes secretive about online activity. We plan to host a parent/carer Cybersafety session in 2015. Websites to assist families around Cybersafety www.thinkuknow.org.au www.cybersmart.gov.au www.netsmartz.org Fraser Focus Page 2 http://goo.gl/1hFN0Q ICT SAFETY AT SCHOOL All Fraser students are required to sign an acceptable use of ICT form to ensure they understand the expectations of using computers and other electronic learning devices at school. Appropriate use of computers and iPads is expected and closely monitored. Each student has an individual password which is not to be shared. Many internet sites are blocked to ensure access is appropriate. If the guidelines are not followed students will have a teacher identified password to monitor their use. Please talk to your child's teacher if you have any questions about the use of devices at school. SOCIAL MEDIA There are various types of social media that students may be accessing. Some examples of these are: Facebook (recommended for students over 13 years of age) Snapchat, Instagram and KIK. If your child is using one of these forms of social media, ensure that you have access to their current passwords and set up your own account so you can be a “friend” and monitor their usage and activity. Students need to be aware that images and comments that are posted online can’t be completely removed. The Cybersafety Help Button provides internet users, particularly children and young people, with easy online access to cybersafety information and assistance in Australia. The help button is a free application that is easily downloaded onto personal computers and mobile devices. Visit www.cybersmart.gov.au for more information.
