Now and at the Hour of Our Death
Last weekend, I drove out to my former parish in Claremont to help fulfill the request of a guy who's been dead for 614 years.
This weekend we all have the opportunity to do something similar.
The long-dead poet is Geoffrey Chaucer, who died on October 25, 1400, and who concluded his Canterbury Tales with this
heartfelt request to his reader:
Wherfore I biseke yow mekely, for the mercy of God,
that ye preye for me that Crist have mercy on me and foryeve me my giltes.
While his Middle English may look a bit strange, if you read it a couple of times, especially aloud, you should be able to get the
gist; he's asking for our prayers. He goes on to say something about his need for these prayers for forgiveness: among other things
he enjoyed a bit too much the bawdiness of his writing, and perhaps reveled personally in the some of the "naughty" experiences
he wrote about. In that, he's probably not that much different than most folks, right? We're all sinners in need of forgiveness.
In 1999, Dolores Cullen, a largely self-taught and innovative Chaucer scholar with penetrating insights (see her website,
celebratechaucer.com), approached me as pastor of Our Lady of the Assumption, with a proposal to honor his memory on the
six-hundredth anniversary of his death by offering a Mass for the repose of his soul, as he requested so long ago.
I readily agreed. The Mass also featured an ensemble performing Late Medieval music, and a party afterward featured modern
versions of old English delicacies and, of course, mead.
This became a tradition still alive fourteen years later.
Project yourself ahead six centuries. Would you still be in need of the prayers you might request now? That may seem like a
strange, even eerie and unreal question, but the fact is the world will still be traveling around the sun after 600 more revolutions not that many if you stop to think of it - even if we ourselves only are here for a few more of them.
When we've been there ten-thousand years,
Bright shining as the sun,
We've no less days to sing God's praise
Than when we first begun.
Eternity is a long time, isn't it? Or is it?
And what about the thought of spending all that time in Purgatory (ouch!) for a little bit of naughtiness here and now?
Well, our faith invites us to rethink some of our notions here.
First of all, the measure of time is bound up with our material nature, our bodiliness. Time is the measure of physical change,
and our perception of time is actually the experience of successive physical changes: one thing after another. When we die, we
step outside of our dependence on physical matter, and so we actually step outside of time. Six seconds, six minutes, days, years,
centuries and so on, simply become meaningless to us. Entering into the God's realm, eternity, all is a perpetual now.
We all leave this world with baggage and unfinished business that can cloud or hinder our readiness to embrace God as God seeks
to eternally embrace us. Letting go of that baggage and finishing that business - basically healing the effects of sin - is perhaps the
best image of Purgatory. It's the way Pope John Paul II and the Catechism of the Catholic Church describe it.
Just as we can pray for one another now, so we believe that our prayers can assist those who have gone before us in that final
purifying work that was left undone at death. Notice that this "work" is not something that we do so much as what we must let God
do. And we all experience that letting God work in our lives is often painful and not easy because we have so much of ourselves
that we want to hold on to.
Praying for someone who died six hundred years ago might seem strange, but our prayers for him now are as if they were at the
moment of his death.
Today, All Souls Day, we pray for those who have gone before us. And we pray in faith that our prayers are meaningful to their
journey into eternal union with God. Someday, I hope to find out whether my prayers benefitted Chaucer. Maybe I'll discover that
someone's prayers far in the future will have benefitted me.
The important thing is to pray faithfully, and not let our prayers be bounded by this world's notions of time and place.
It's easy to pray for those whose departure is still painfully in our memory, and of course we must. But let's also give a little thought
to those who may have faded from our memory. While we commend our recently departed dear ones to Lord's loving mercy, let's
also give a thought to our many ancestors and those who, by God's grace, are our kin, no matter how distant.

Organ Recital
Saturday, November 22, at 7:30 p.m., Good
Shepherd will be hosting an organ recital by
Tom Mueller. Tom is an organist, educator,
composer, and award winning musician. During
this past summer, he began his appointment as the
assistant organist at St. James’ Episcopal Church
in Los Angeles, where he accompanies the
acclaimed Choir of St. James’. In January 2015,
he will become Assistant Professor of Church Music and University
Organist at Concordia University in Irvine, California, where he will be
responsible for teaching organ, jazz, and composition.
Mueller earned the Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the Eastman
School of Music, and also holds degrees from the University of Notre
Dame (M.S.M. in organ), and the University of Maine at Augusta (B.M.
in jazz composition and piano), where he graduated summa cum laude.
The program will be a delightful mix of music by J. S. Bach,
Alan Wingard, George Shearing, Percy Whitlock, and
Felix Mendelssohn. A suggested minimum donation of $10 will be
collected at the door.

A way to draw closer to God
Spiritual direction is an ancient ministry, a unique
one-to-one relationship in which a trained person assists
another person in the search for an ever closer union of
love with God.
Directors listen carefully to the unfolding of directees’
lives, to help them discern the ways in which God is
leading them. The practice of spiritual direction consists
much more of “holy listening” rather than direction in the
sense of offering guidance or direct advice.

The Parish Student Choir is directed by Nick
Kenworthy-Browne, Good Shepherd parishioner and
member of Music Ministry and Leadership Council.
Rehearsals on Tuesday from 3:30-4:30 p.m. in the
Parish Center Office, Conference Room 3.
Rehearsal Dates: November 4, 11, 18, 25 and
December 2, 9, 16. The Parish Student Choir will be
singing for the following masses: 12:30 p.m. Mass on
Sunday, December 7.
We will likely be Christmas Caroling in December.
The Parish Student Choir will also hopefully be singing
for Mass on Wednesday, December 24th, Christmas Eve
4 p.m. Mass.

Amy’s Angels
Bundle Sunday Society of St. Vincent de Paul
Our new Caring Presence Ministry is being named
“Amy’s Angels.” Here is the story of the name:
Amy Riley was a homeless woman who lived near
the church grounds of Good Shepherd for many
years. She had no family and few friends. She was
alone in life, except for her Good Shepherd Family.
When she developed cancer in 2013, some “angels”
from our parish were instrumental in getting her
admitted to Country Villa Convalescent Hospital.
There she received a comfortable bed, food,
medicine to ease her pains and the caring presence
of hospital staff and parishioners. She died off the
streets, with dignity and grace, and was buried from
our church which had essentially been her home.
We continue to offer a caring presence in her name.

When we lose a loved one we grieve. It is normal,
and it is natural. We heal as we share our story and
listen to others share theirs in a safe, confidential
group.
There are many ways to lose a loved one, and we all
grieve in our own unique ways. If you are grieving,
think about attending our bereavement support
group. We meet every other Saturday at
11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. in the Parish Center.

A Caring Presence
Do you enjoy visiting with people? Maybe we have
a new ministry just for you! Currently a few of our
parishioners go and visit residents at the Country
Villa Convalescent Home at Fairfax and Willoughby
on the third Tuesday of each month.
They do not bring communion. They just bring
themselves and a beautifully caring presence.
They are non-sectarian and non-religious in their
visit. The people they are visiting do not need to be
Catholic. They are simply visiting people who have
no one else coming to visit them. If you are not
available on the third Tuesday, but would like
to join this ministry, we can certainly make
arrangements for you to visit on another day.

Good Shepherd School Soccer Team
Despite their few numbers, Good Shepherd
players made it up in energy! Teamed up
with some of the younger St James players,
the Good Shepherd kids played their hearts
out only losing to the more seasoned
St James team by 1.
The final score being 1-2.
Ruby was fearless, running around everywhere and successfully stole the ball
away from St James. Michael showed off his ball control and passing skills under
pressure. He also played goalie denying several shots! Playing in the back with
him was Sadie who held excellent defensive positioning and kept the other team's
scores down to a minimum. Hal ran the field creating offensive opportunities and
scored Good Shepherd's goal, keeping the game from being a shutout.
All the parents and kids had a great time at their first soccer game and look
forward to playing the next one!

God's Dwelling
GOSPEL: John 2:3-22
The temple was the center of worship of the Jews.
Jesus affirmed its worth by driving out the merchants
and money changers who profaned it, but went beyond it
by establishing a worship "in spirit and truth" that was
not dependent on the temple or on any particular place
(see Jn 4:19-24).
The church building is not the house of God but the
home of his people, a home in which the sinner
especially finds welcome, repentance, and a new life
(see Lk 19:1-10). All who gather for worship must first
seek reconciliation, or their worship is valueless
(see Mt 5:23-24).
FIRST READING: Ezekiel 47:1-2,8-9,12
The prophet Ezekiel, writing from exile, both before the
destruction of Jerusalem by the Babylonians and during
the subsequent captivity, consistently identifies the cause
of this disaster as the unfaithfulness of God's people,
and yet forcefully holds out God's intention to save his
people, and restore those who are faithful.
This reading depicts the vision of a New Temple, not
made by hands, as the source of life-giving water for all
the people of the world.
We, of course, see this vision as fulfilled in Jesus Christ
himself.
SECOND READING: 1 Corinthians 3:9c-11,16-17
St. Paul frequently uses images of building to describe
the Church, the people themselves as God's dwelling,
because God is truly present among us in Christ.
Here he advises that our activity in how we relate to one
another is like a careful building project, in which we
must take care that all parts fit together properly, so that
our community, God's people, may be a place where
God can live and infuse us with his life.
Questions for thought, discussion, and prayer:
1. How is a building symbolic of the people who gather
there?
2. Where do you personally feel closest to God? Why?
Parish Finance Report for October 26, 2014
$23,000—What it cost last week to keep the doors
open, that is, to pay for operating expenses,
programs and the ministries that serve God’s
people. Last week’s collection income: $9,182.
How is the discrepancy between the cost of running
the parish and the collection income made up?
Some of the difference comes from occasional large
gifts or bequests, but most of it is from interest
earned on investments of major gifts made by
generous people in the past, most of whom are long
gone. Thank God we are not in debt, and a long
way from being in debt, but we need to reduce and
eventually eliminate the deficit. It is important that
everyone who calls Good Shepherd their parish
home contribute to sustain the life of the parish.
If you do not have a plan for contributing in proportion to your means, please consider it.
With the arrival of autumn, I'd like to invite you to
