Ice Age Coming to Moody Gardens
Moody Gardens presents Ice Age from November 15, 2014 to May 10,
2015. Ice Age is an exciting and educational exhibition that invites you to
travel back in time to discover a frigid world, covered in ice and occupied
by mammoths, saber-toothed cats, bears, gigantic birds, cave people
and more.
Ice Age features life-sized animatronic animals, real fossils, some of
which can be touched by our guests, and cast skeletons set within elaborate Ice Age scenery.
The exhibition begins 2.5 million years ago when the Earth witnessed a
major environmental disruption, one that lead to dramatic evolutionary
changes to Earth’s life forms and forever shaped human history. Guests
then travel through galleries exploring the Megafauna, or giant Ice Age
animals; the Ice People, including Neanderthals and Cro Magnons; the
Tar Pits, the death traps of the Ice Age creatures; and the Megafaunal
Extinction, exploring the theories for why many animals of the Ice Age
became extinct.
This exhibition provides a unique and exciting walk through the Ice Age
epoch for families and visitors of all ages, closing with poignant discussion topics about Earth’s fragile climates and possible return of the Ice.
The Ice Return Gallery explores the prediction for another glacial period

The Pecan Man: by Cassie Dandridge Selleck -- The Pecan Man is a work
of Southern fiction by Florida native Cassie Dandridge Selleck. Its first chapter was
the First Place winner of the 2006 CNW/FFWA Florida State Writing Competition in the
Unpublished Novel category. In the summer of 1976, recently widowed and childless
Ora Lee Beckworth hires a homeless old black man to mow her lawn. The neighborhood children call him the Pee-can Man; their mothers call them inside whenever he
appears. When he is arrested for murder, only Ora knows the truth about the man she
calls Eddie. But truth is a fickle thing, and a lie is self-perpetuating. Ora and her maid
Blanche soon find themselves in a web of lies that send an innocent man to prison
for the rest of his life. Twenty-five years later, Ora sets out to tell the truth about the
Pecan Man. Listen as she begins her story: “Blanche worked for me through birth and
death, joy and sorrow and Lord knows we had a lot of sorrow in all the time we spent
under this roof. Most people figured she was crazy to put up with me all those years,
but Blanche and I had an understanding. It was a vow we made back in 1976. Neither
of us spoke of it afterwards, but it hung between us like a spider web, fragile and easy
to break, but danged hard to get shed of once the threads took hold.”
All the Light We Cannot See: A Novel: by Anthony Doerr -- From the highly
acclaimed, multiple award-winning Anthony Doerr, the beautiful, stunningly ambitious
instant New York Times bestseller about a blind French girl and a German boy whose
paths collide in occupied France as both try to survive the devastation of World War II.
Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he
works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind
and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize
it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is twelve, the Nazis occupy Paris
and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s
reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might
be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel. In a mining town in Germany,
the orphan Werner grows up with his younger sister, enchanted by a crude radio they
find. Werner becomes an expert at building and fixing these crucial new instruments,
a talent that wins him a place at a brutal academy for Hitler Youth, then a special assignment to track the resistance. More and more aware of the human cost of his intelligence, Werner travels through the heart of the war and, finally, into Saint-Malo, where
his story and Marie-Laure’s converge. Doerr’s “stunning sense of physical detail and
gorgeous metaphors” (San Francisco Chronicle) are dazzling. Deftly interweaving the
lives of Marie-Laure and Werner, he illuminates the ways, against all odds, people try
to be good to one another. Ten years in the writing, All the Light We Cannot See is a
magnificent, deeply moving novel from a writer “whose sentences never fail to thrill”
(Los Angeles Times).
Big Little Lies: by Liane Moriarty -- Sometimes it’s the little lies that turn out
to be the most lethal... A murder… a tragic accident... or just parents behaving badly?
What’s indisputable is that someone is dead. But who did what? Big Little Lies follows
three women, each at a crossroads: Madeline is a force to be reckoned with. She’s
funny and biting, passionate, she remembers everything and forgives no one. Her exhusband and his yogi new wife have moved into her beloved beachside community,
and their daughter is in the same kindergarten class as Madeline’s youngest (how is
this possible?). And to top it all off, Madeline’s teenage daughter seems to be choosing Madeline’s ex-husband over her. (How. Is. This. Possible?). Celeste is the kind
of beautiful woman who makes the world stop and stare. While she may seem a bit
flustered at times, who wouldn’t be, with those rambunctious twin boys? Now that the
boys are starting school, Celeste and her husband look set to become the king and
queen of the school parent body. But royalty often comes at a price, and Celeste is
grappling with how much more she is willing to pay. New to town, single mom Jane
is so young that another mother mistakes her for the nanny. Jane is sad beyond her
years and harbors secret doubts about her son. But why? While Madeline and Celeste
soon take Jane under their wing, none of them realizes how the arrival of Jane and her
inscrutable little boy will affect them all. Big Little Lies is a brilliant take on ex-husbands
and second wives, mothers and daughters, schoolyard scandal, and the dangerous
little lies we tell ourselves just to survive.
Walking on Water: A Novel: by Richard Paul Evans -- In this fifth New York
Times bestseller in the Walk series, Richard Paul Evans’s hero Alan Christoffersen
must say some painful goodbyes and learn some important lessons as he comes to
the end of his cross-country walk to Key West. After the death of his beloved wife, after
the loss of his advertising business to his once-trusted partner, after bankruptcy forced
him from his home, Alan Christoffersen’s daring cross-country journey—a walk across
America, from Seattle to Key West, with only the pack on his back—has taught him
lessons about love, forgiveness and, most of all, hope. Now Alan must again return
west to face yet another crisis, one that threatens to upend his world just as he had
begun to heal from so much loss, leaving him unsure of whether he can reach the end
his journey. It will take the love of a new friend, and the wisdom of an old friend, to help
him to finally leave the past behind and find the strength and hope to live again.

Houston Cinema Arts Festival 2014: Sons de L’âme, Nov. 16 at 6:30
p.m. Houston Cinema Arts Festival 2014 and Houston Ballet present
the documentary dance performance film Sons de L’âme (“Sounds of
the Soul”) choreographed by Houston Ballet Artistic Director Stanton
Welch and set to piano pieces by Frédéric Chopin performed by Lang
Lang. Taped in Paris, and broadcast on television in several European
countries, Houston Ballet’s performances premiered to standing ovations
at the historic Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, France in October 2013. Reviewing Sons de L’âme for the Houston Press, critic D.L.
Groover observed, “Welch has pared his distinctive choreography to
match the refined music. The overall mood is clean and elegant, technically brilliant and powerfully emotive. Is there another contemporary choreographer who can move dancers on and off stage with such proficiency
and know-how? The classical vocabulary he uses doesn’t only express
the music but also illuminates. He makes us see Chopin. The view is
hypnotic.”
Metropolis!, Nov. 21 & 22 at 7:30 p.m.: 30 performers direct from Houston’s sister city Shenzhen (China) bring you this entertaining Broadwaystyle musical that bridges Chinese and Western performing arts with
spoken word, lyrics, music, acting, singing and dancing. Performed in

Dance Source Houston Birthday Bash
Ten years ago, a group of artists and art-lovers had a wonderful idea:
“Let’s create a hub for the dance community that will serve as a connection
between companies and artists, and as a central advocate for contemporary dance in Houston.” With that goal in mind, Dance Source Houston
was born. Beginning with straightforward and necessary services such
as the Dance Card, a printed dance calendar found in playbills across
the city, Dance Source has grown, now managing The Barn – Dance
Source Performing Arts Space, providing performance opportunities and
offering a large variety of marketing and support services geared toward
helping the Houston dance community thrive. Christina Giannelli, Dance
Source Houston’s Founder and Board Chair, is “extremely pleased and
a bit astonished to find ourselves at this Anniversary. In it’s first ten years
Dance Source has developed into a stable organization with creative and
visionary leadership. For a long time it was Houston’s virtual home for
dance, with the addition of The Barn it is now able to offer a whole new
collection of programs to support and encourage Contemporary Dance in
Houston. How sweet is that!”
Dance Source kicks-off the anniversary celebration on November 6, 2014
from 7-9 p.m., with a unique fundraising event at Dance Source Houston’s facility, The Barn. The celebration will feature music, food, drink,
and the debut of Truck Dances. Lydia Hance, Artistic Director of Frame
Dance Productions has been commissioned to create a new work using
two box trucks as her stage. The new piece will debut at the November
6 event and will launch the use of trucks as a mobile stage that can take
artists directly to dance audiences throughout the city.
For Ms. Hance, the choreographic challenge presents an amazing opportunity, “When I heard about the Truck Dances piece I couldn’t sit still.
It makes perfect sense to have dance in a box truck. Four musicians,
three dancers, two trucks. I love the limits of the space, and the intrinsic
suggestions of movement and confinement. The shape of the truck is a
frame for the eye, and the challenge for me is: how do these two trucks
relate to each other, and how can the walls connect, not separate, the
dancers?”
Dance Source Houston’s Anniversary Celebration will take place on
Thursday, November 6 from 7-9 p.m. at The Barn, 2201 Preston St,
Houston, TX 77003. Tickets are $100 advance purchase; $125 at the
door. Limited number of tickets available. To purchase tickets visit the
web at www.dancesourcehouston.secure.force.com/ticket/. For more information, call 713-224-3262 or visit www.dancesourcehouston.org.
Dance Source Houston is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to
creating audiences and appreciation for contemporary dance in Houston
and beyond. Dance Source Houston publishes The Dance Card – Houston dance event listings and The Dance DiSH online magazine. Dance
Source also manages The Barn – Dance Source Performing Arts Space,
a 7200 square foot facility housing 2 large dance studios and a 120-seat
black box theatre dedicated to supporting Houston’s dance community.
These activities are supported in part by a grant from The City of Houston
through the Houston Arts Alliance, Houston Endowment, Inc., The Heimbinder Family Foundation and the Nightingale Code Foundation.
Frame Dance Productions is a fresh and energetic presence on the
dance scene in Houston. Frame Dance Productions’ mission is to engage audiences with dance in meaningful ways through creating innovative and vulnerable works for the screen and stage. Over the past three
years, you may have seen the Framers dance at the Contemporary Art
Museum, Miller Outdoor Theater, Jones Plaza, the Pennzoil Place building, the Photobooth on Montrose, the Port Boliver ferry, Big Range Dance
Festival, art galleries, and on screens in film festivals all over Houston,
Virginia and Berlin. www.Framedance.org.

Children’s Museum of Houston Unwraps
The Grinch’s Holiday Workshop
Join Cindy-Lou Who, the lovable dog Max and the “Mean One” himself, The Grinch, at The
Grinch’s Holiday Workshop, a new interactive experience opening at the Children’s Museum
of Houston. Inspired by Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas! and developed by the
Children’s Museum of Manhattan with the permission of Dr. Seuss Enterprises, The Grinch’s
Holiday Workshop opens November 22, 2014 and runs through January 5, 2015.
“Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas! is a beloved holiday classic children and their
families enjoy together year after year,” said Tammie Kahn, the Children’s Museum of Houston’s Executive Director. “The Grinch’s Holiday Workshop will bring that story and characters of Who-ville to life.”
To step into The Grinch’s Holiday Workshop is to walk into the pages of Dr. Seuss’ classic holiday tale. Gallery walls, wrapped in scenes from Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole
Christmas! pop with Who-holiday spirit. See Cindy-Lou Who at the Who-ville holiday feast,
where the transformed Grinch carves the “roast beast.” At the center of it all is old “Grinch
Claus” and his oversized, interactive sleigh tethered to his unwitting “Rein-Dog,” Max. Hop
in and steer Max all the way to Who-ville! Activity areas buzz with laughter and creative
energy as you take part in Grinch-related holiday programming.
The Grinch’s Holiday Workshop will host daily and weekly programming. Look for clues in
The Workshop to answer scavenger hunt questions; dive into fun, two-sided Grinch masks;
get the Grinch stuck down a chimney with the “Grinch in a Pinch” tree ornaments; create
your own Who-ville character to add to a community mural and invite everyone out for a
Who-Ville feast; create Grinch finger puppets to convey this holiday classic in a puppet
theatre; and gather around for storytelling with the Children’s Museum of Houston staff and
special guests who will read How the Grinch Stole Christmas! Special appearances will be
made by the Grinch himself. Bring your camera!
““We’d like to invite Houston families to celebrate the holidays among the most cherished
children’s author of all time,” said Kahn. “Celebrate creativity, spark a lifelong love of reading and have yourself a merry, little Grinchmas!”
Theodor “Seuss” Geisel is quite simply the most beloved children’s book author of all time.
Winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 1984, an Academy Award, three Emmy Awards, three Grammy Awards, and three Caldecott Honors, Geisel wrote and illustrated 44 books for children.
Hundreds of millions of copies have found their way into homes and hearts around the world.
While Theodor Geisel died on September 24, 1991, Dr. Seuss lives on, inspiring generations
of children of all ages to explore the joys of reading. For more information about Dr. Seuss

“It’s exciting for us to offer a new
twist to the annual Dickens event,”
states GHF Executive Director,

bring back some old favorites for
those who come annually but we
are adding a distinctive historical
theme that will add new attractions
and cultural experiences.”
The annual holiday street festival,
based on 19th-century Victorian
London, features parades, nonstop entertainment on six stages,
strolling carolers, roving musicians, bagpipers, jugglers and a

Victorian-inspired crafts, clothing,
jewelry, holiday decorations and
gift items.
Two descendants of Charles Dickens will once again grace the festival as GHF welcomes Lucinda
Dickens Hawksley, great-greatgreat-granddaughter of Dickens,
and Jane Monk, great-greatgranddaughter. Both women will
be at numerous events throughout
the weekend.
With over 150 vendors throughout
the festival, Dickens on The Strand
is your opportunity to get a head
start on your holiday shopping. In
addition to our numerous new craft
and specialty vendors, our daily
parades will also host new groups
and excitement from all of the colonies of Britain!
The festival weekend also hosts
a multitude of spirited fun with
events such as the crowd favorite
Whimsical Whisker Revue, a facial
hair contest for the bearded and

Express says “This crowd-pleasing
stage adaptation hits the jackpot!”
It’s the summer of 1963, and
17-year-old Frances ‘Baby’ Houseman is on vacation in New York’s
Catskill Mountains with her older
sister and parents. Mesmerized by
the racy dance moves and pounding rhythms she discovers in the
resort’s staff quarters, Baby can’t
wait to be part of the scene, especially when she catches sight of
Johnny Castle, the resort’s sexy
dance instructor. Passions ignite
and Baby’s life changes forever
when she is thrown in to the deep
end as Johnny’s leading lady, both
on-stage and off.

Main Street Theater’s Madeline’s Christmas
Main Street Theater presents Madeline’s Christmas, playing November
16 – December 14 at Talento Bilingüe de Houston, 333 S. Jensen, 77003.
“In an old house in Paris that was covered with vines lived twelve little
girls in two straight lines.” This charming 1956 classic finds Madeline in
a Christmas crisis when all of her schoolmates are sick, including Miss
Clavel. Who will run the school? How will the girls get home for the holidays? Madeline must take charge! Madeline’s Christmas is a perfect reminder for audiences of all ages of this wonderful season of miracles.
Recommended for Pre-kindergarten and up. Children under the age of 3
(including sleeping babies) are not allowed in the theater. For tickets, call
713.524.6706 or visit www.MainStreetTheater.com.
On Saturday, December 20, MST will hold its Page to Stage Book Club
meeting at the Blue Willow Bookshop at 10 a.m. The club meets over the
course of the season to talk about the books the MST Theater for Youth
plays are based on, meet characters from the books, have a snack, make
crafts, and hear a reading from the book. Children can bring their own
copy of the book or purchase it at a discount at Blue Willow (located at
14532 Memorial Drive (at Dairy Ashford)). To RSVP for the book club,
send an email to [email protected]. FREE.
Psophonia Dance Company’s Fresh Cuts
This fall, Psophonia Dance Company presents Fresh Cuts, a collection of
new dances created by current and former PDC dancers. The show will
offer a diverse range of emerging choreographic voices featuring works
by Karin Celeste, Timothy Johnson, Kendall Kramer, Tory Pierce, Kristina
Prats, Arielle Tesia Rojas, Haylee Voogt and Danielle Koblinski. Fresh
Cuts premieres Friday and Saturday, November 14-15, 2014 at 8 p.m. at
Vault Houston.
Healing and recovery are the common threads that run through the dances created by Celeste, Johnson and Pierce. Karin Celeste’s work Remembrance stirs up the dreamlike second or two it takes to flood a soul
with emotions and images long tucked away. As those thoughts surface,
the work begins on how to deal with those memories.
Turning tragedy into triumph, Timothy Johnson’s newest work Shhh! reflects on his months spent in the hospital recovering from an automobile accident. He recalls, “I had the most difficult time sleeping because
nurses and doctors were coming in and out of my room throughout the
night. The only time I was able to sleep was when I listened to my music.”
In Cicatrix, Tory Pierce explores the scars left behind from the healing
process. Recovering from her own recent injury Pierce says, “the choreography has shown me that being still and moving at your own pace is the
best way to re-learn how to work with what you’ve got, especially when
even that is up for change.”
Haylee Voogt, Kristina Prats and Danielle Koblinski each tackle the subject of internal turmoil from different angles. Voogt’s pensive approach
delves into the struggle to find hope during the darkest moments. Set to
music by The Piano Guys, the piece moves from dark to light in the realization that all is not lost. Prat’s work takes a more playful slant asserting that laughter is the best medicine even when difficult times hold you
down. Koblinski draws inspiration from personal perspective in her solo/
duet work about resolving feelings of being alone or abandoned.
Rojas and Kramer investigate femininity and divination. Arielle Tesia Rojas interest lies in deciphering the mixed signals regarding women’s femininity and sexuality. Why is female sexuality overly expressed in some
cases yet viewed as non-existent or repulsive in other cases? In 62: The
small exceeding, Kendall Kramer consulted the I Ching Hexagram 62.
Kramer explains, “The solo deals with the dominance of small concerns,
sometimes obscuring the greater picture. From there, I leave the skeleton
of the piece to another form of divination - tarot card reading - from which
the soloist will create the sequence of events.”
Artistic Director Sophia L. Torres is both proud and excited to present
the work of these emerging choreographers. “I have had the privilege of
working with these young artists in my own work and am pleased that I
can offer them a outlet to share their own movement ideas.” Performing in
the evening program are Psophonia members Vi Dieu, Melissa Juneau,
Danielle Koblinski, Kendall Kramer, Tory Pierce, Kristina Prats, Arielle Tesia Rojas and Lauren Turner.
Show times are Friday and Saturday, November 14-15 at 8pm at Vault
Houston, 1824 Spring Street #124, Houston, TX 77007. Tickets are $15
in advance and $20 at the door. To purchase tickets, visit www.psophonia.com or 713/834-4162. For information, please visit the website at

Adopt A Manatee
for the Holidays
Finding the perfect, unexpected
holiday gift for someone who has
everything is just a click or phone
call away. A manatee adoption
from Save the Manatee Club is
a favorite holiday gift choice for
shoppers who are searching for
something more purposeful and
impactful. Around the country and
the globe, people enjoy the pure
pleasure of giving a real, living
Florida manatee with a known history by adopting one or more online at savethemanatee.org, or by
calling the Club toll free within the
U.S. at 1-800-432-5646.
An annual manatee adoption
costs $25 and includes an adoption certificate, photo of a real
endangered manatee, biography,
membership handbook, and newsletters throughout the year with
updated reports on the manatees
in the adoption program. View the
adoptees – Squeaky, Annie, Rocket, Whiskers, and many more of
these marvelous marine mammals
on the Club’s website at savethemanatee.org/adoptees. A personalized holiday message is offered
with each gift adoption. And each
new member who joins the AdoptA-Manatee® program online for a
$35 tax-deductible donation will
also receive a 24” x 12” full-color
2015 wall calendar. Shipping is
free within the United States.
Amy Senn from the Twin Cities has
a love for animals, including manatees. After following the adoptees
on the Club’s website and learning about each of them with her
young daughter Mia, Amy decided
to adopt Philip from the Club’s
Blue Spring State Park adoption
program as a holiday present last
year for Mia. “This is an awesome
gift to give because it’s meaningful,
and it’s also a teaching moment for
a child to help a species in need,”
said Amy. “Mia was thrilled to receive the adoption! We care about
the manatees because they’re so
sweet and harmless. It’s heartbreaking to hear about the high
number of manatee deaths each
year.”
Save the Manatee Club, an awardwinning international nonprofit
conservation and manatee welfare
organization, was co-founded in
1981 by world-renowned singer/
songwriter, Jimmy Buffett. Funds
from the adoption program go toward emergency rescue response
for sick and injured manatees,
and for waterway signage, public awareness, research, and so
much more.
Holiday manatee gift adoptions are
available by contacting Save the
Manatee Club at 500 N. Maitland
Ave., Maitland, FL 32751, or by

Hutchison Books (Cedar Ridge, California) will engage visitors in how
they entered into and continue to navigate the terrain of book collecting in
an increasingly digital era. And at 3:00pm, Ken Sanders, of Ken Sanders
Rare Books (Salt Lake City, Utah) and featured appraiser on Antiques
Roadshow, will present a talk on “What Makes a Book Valuable?”. Select
food trucks will be present on site for feasting and palatable enjoyment.
Throughout the day, a line-up consisting of approximately 20 dealers from
across the country will present an array of rare items, including children’s
books, Texana, mysteries, cookbooks, fine art and illustrated editions,
historical documents, out-of-print, first editions, comics, and more. Demonstrations will be conducted in the museum studios showcasing papermaking, letterpress printing, bookbinding and lithography. Visitors can
witness the rare occasion of our linotype machine in operation. Additionally, the TPM Book Arts Guild and the TPM Printers Guild will be selling
hand-made books and related crafts.
The entry fee is $5.00 at the door. Become a museum member for just
$50 and get into the fair for free, and receive a limited edition letterpress
book fair poster. Other membership benefits include a 10% discount on
class tuition and 10% discount in the museum gift shop, as well as being added to our exclusive mailing list, which offers invitations to special
museum receptions and events.
The Printing Museum, founded in 1979, is one of only four printing museums in the country. The museum’s mission is to preserve and promote
the history, technology, and art of printing. Through its permanent collection of historical documents, fine art prints, and antique printing equipment, The Printing Museum narrates the story of printed communication
and the ways in which printing technologies have transformed lives. In
addition, the museum maintains three gallery spaces devoted to temporary exhibitions and four working studios dedicated to book arts, letterpress printing, and fine art printing.
The Museum is located at 1324 W. Clay, one block west of Montrose and
a half mile south of Allen Parkway. The Museum is open to the public
Tuesday through Saturday; 10 a.m.-5p.m. Admission is free. For more

Meet FORBES
www.txlabrescue.org
Forbes is an incredibly sweet,
super affectionate boy! He’s
probably 3 or 4 years old and
on the smaller side at about 60
lbs. He’s also got huge brown
eyes and he isn’t afraid to use
them! One look will make your
heart melt! He’s house trained
and learning that the crate is a
wonderful place to be. He’s really smart, quickly picking up on
good manners and learning to
keep his paws on the floor rather
than the counter. Forbes greets
dogs and people very nicely and
is learning to sit to get affection
(he hasn’t met a cat yet). This
boy wants nothing more than
to be included in what you are
doing so he will make a fantastic buddy for someone who
wants a companion. He likes a
good game of fetch, and likes
walks, but chasing bunnies and
squirrels is what he thinks is
the most fun ever! Inside, he is
quiet and relaxes, preferably at
your feet. If you are looking for
a sweet boy who will soak up
all the love you can give and
return it in spades, then consider meeting Forbes. Apply to
adopt at www.txlabrescue.org.

Meet BRUNO
Bruno is a 2 year old Black Mouth
Cur/Shepherd Mix. Bruno was
found as a stray in rough shape.
He has healed and is now in a
foster home with several foster
siblings to play with. Bruno is
neutered, up to date on all vaccines. He is house trained, crate
trained, walks well on a leash
and interacts well with other
dogs. If you are interested in an
active, loving, and playful sweetheart you’ll want to meet Bruno!

From Willa’s foster mom: “Willa
(aka Sophie) is an extremely affectionate girl with big brown
eyes that will melt your heart!
She is a little shy at first, then
she warms up and can’t get
enough snuggles. She had no
training when she came to our
home but she is very eager
to learn and picks things up
quickly. She has learned sit and
how to walk nicely on a leash.
She loves her four legged foster brothers and has never met
a person she didn’t like! She
is a total sweetheart. Willa has
obviously been over bred and
was very thin. She is putting on
weight nicely and loves to eat!
She wants to play with toys but
is quick to give it up if one of
her brothers wants it. She isn’t
much on retrieving, she runs after balls but hasn’t quite figured
out how to bring it back. Willa
has learned good house manners and is potty trained. She
loves to go where we go and
rides wonderfully in the car. She

Beverly’s Travels
Matera has gained international fame (not just from being in many movies) but for the ‘Old Town Matera’ known as “Sassi di Matera”, meaning
“stones of Matera”. The Sassi originated from a prehistoric settlement,
called troglodyte, and are thought to be the oldest human settlement in
Italy. The Sassi is what actually got dug into rock, (what we might refer
to as caves), resulting in shelters, cowsheds, sheepfolds, water cisterns,
wine-cellars, churches, and dwellings. These caves would be dug deep
into the rock, and often had several rooms. There was always a room
for the donkey which was to the early peoples’ lives what the automobile
is to ours today. The excavated stone from the caves was reused at the
front of the original digging entrance to build the outside of the structure,
linking various levels with steep staircases that went across the roofs of
the caves below, creating an interesting system for collecting rainwater.
Living conditions gradually deteriorated over the centuries, and in 1952
the Italian government was forced to pass a special law condemning the
entire area, and relocated all of the inhabitants of the Sassi into new specially built accommodations, (like projects) outside of the old town. The
Sassi became a ghost town and was completely neglected until 1986,
when the government passed new laws that led to the launch of a huge
restoration project that is still in progress today. This restoration and
revitalization project has led to the creation of first class hotels, top-notch
museums, lively bars and restaurants, and a wide-spread return of residents to the area.
One of the most unique hotels in the newly renovated area is Palazzo
Gattini, a remarkable restoration of a 20-room palace dating back to the
15th Century that belonged to the family of Count Giuseppe Gattini. All
of the guest rooms are named and there is a very charming historically
accurate story that describes each room and the role it played in the
Count’s home. Breakfast is not to be missed at Palazzo Gattini. Not only
Page 15
is the food delicious, the setting
for service in the cheese cellar is
very special. Also extremely note
worthy is the Casa Cava, the only
underground Cultural Center in the
world. For years it was used as a
waste dump, and now it is restored
and transformed into a Center for
Youth and Creativity, and is also as
an opera house, and theater.
A UNESCO World Heritage Site is
a place, such as a forest, mountain, lake, island, desert, monument, or, a building, a complex, or
a city to be listed by UNESCO as
having a special significance for all
humanity. In 1993, UNESCO declared the Sassi of Matera, Italy a
World Heritage Site, thus confirming the universal importance of the
largest dug out rock settlement in
the world. The town has also been
proposed as the European Capital
of Culture for 2019. I venture to
say we will all be seeing, hearing,
and reading, a lot more about the
Sassi of Matera, Italy.

Many of Italy’s 50 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the most of any country on the World Heritage List, are well known: The Dolomites; The City
of Verona; Florence and Rome; the archaeological area of Pompeii, the
Amalfi Coast, and the Aeolian Islands, to name just a few. All of these
sites have been at one time or another, travel destinations for those seeking out history, art and culture. Perhaps a lesser known site, and one
never regarded as a travel destination in itself until recently, is the town of
Matera. Although Matera may not be so well known, you may have seen
it, even though you never physically visited the city allegedly founded by
the Romans in the 3rd Century. The crude and rustic beauty of the Old
Town and the landscape of the surrounding area have captured the imagination of many film producers from around the globe over the years and
Matera has been the natural setting for movies which have become part
of classic film history. Most of Mel Gibson’s 2004 film, “The Passion of
The Christ”, was filmed in the area, and “The Nativity Story” a film made
in Matera in 2006 depicts the story of Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem before the birth of Christ. During my recent visit to Matera, “Christ
the Lord: Out of Egypt” was in full production under the direction of acclaimed American director, Cyrus Nowrasteh. Based on the best-selling
novel by Anne Rice, “Christ the Lord” is a story of Jesus’ childhood, and
is due out next spring 2015.

chronicles man’s enduring fascination over five centuries with our

Old Masters and the Impressionists, to Ansel Adams’ iconic Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico
(1941) and shots famously taken

a dazzling overview of five centuries of moon-gazing. In addition,

This is my second year to do the Komen Cure walk; a charity that raises
money and awareness for the fight against Breast Cancer. Ironically,
today is the year long anniversary that my girlfriend, Cristl Craig, had
surgery to remove her cancer. Even more ironic, the day I sign up for
the walk and try to raise money for this wonderful cause, she sends out
a fabulous email. Instead of me even trying to write what kind of year
she has had and the courage she has shown, I thought I would forward a
note she sent to her family and friends earlier today that describes what
a year it has been.

In Her Own Words: To my friends and family,
This morning my good friend said to me… Happy “Weird” Anniversary!
So true! It was one year ago today that I went in to Methodist Hospital
for my Bi-lateral mastectomy. Is this an anniversary? Is this a day to be
happy? June 25th was my year “anniversary” from diagnosis. Was that
to be celebrated? I don’t know how I feel about these anniversary dates
but it seems to me that in order to figure out a way to be happy with my
“new normal” I have to look back at what I have overcome. This is why I
am sharing my story with you.
