Dear Colleagues in the Pharmacy Faculty, Dr. Shivajirao Kadam It is a matter of great pride and privilege for me to extend a very and cordial welcome to all the teachers of Pharmacy in India and the members of APTI, as the Chairman of the 19th Annual National Convention of Pharmaceutical Teachers of India, APTICON, being organized by the LOC Chairman Pharmacy institutions of Pune region on 28th-30th November, 2014. At the outset, I profusely thank the office bearers of APTI and its members, as well as, the Organizing Committee of APTICON, 2014 for showing trust in my organizing capabilities and for giving me an opportunity to play a key role in organizing this mega event. I assure you all that, with the cooperation of committed and enthusiastic members of the Organizing Committee, we will make this convention, one of the most memorable events in the annals of APTICON. As all of you are aware, during the past two decades or so, the field of Pharmacy has assumed unprecedented importance. The pharmaceutical industries across the world are growing fast, are dominating the industrial sector. Consequently, there is an urgent and growing need to develop a competent work force in the pharmacy sector in terms of the scientists, the academics, manufacturers of drugs etc. The profession of pharmacy teaching, therefore, is getting expanded. However it is important to improve the quality of teaching and research in the pharmacy institutes. Therefore, continuous enhancement in the quality of pharmacy education and research should be a priority item of our professional commitment. To achieve these objectives, we will have to focus our attention on continuous upgrading of our curricula, keeping in view the changing needs of the pharmacy industry and also of other sectors of society. It is necessary to bear in mind that the technologies related to drug manufacturing, drug analysis, drug delivery, etc., are changing at a very fast rate. As a teacher of pharmacy, it is mandatory for us to acquaint our students with these new technologies and the techniques associated with it, so that the employability and entrepreneurship among students will increase. They will prove themselves relevant for the industry, as well as, for society. In the context of changes that are taking place in the pharmacy profession, the theme “Emerging Trends in Pharmacy Profession and Education” identified for the APTICON 2014 is very apt. I am sure, this convention will address the issues related to pharmacy profession and education. Deliberations in this convention will provide us with a new vision of pharmacy profession and education. Friends, this convention is being held in the historic city of Pune, which is a cultural capital of Maharashtra and a very dynamic hub of educational institutions, which is very rightly designated as Oxford of East. It is a fast developing city, which is harboring various kinds of multinational industries, as well as IT industries, thereby it has carved out itself a place in the global industrial and commercial map. Pune is thus a city that epitomizes new India. It is a city where the tradition is being modernized. The City, Pune is surrounded by a few places of tourist and religious interests, which the delegates of the convention may like to visit. On behalf of the Organizing Committee of APTICON 2014, I again extend a very cordial invitation to you all for this Convention. W e are pleased to announce that Association of Pharmaceutical Dr. P. D. Chaudhari Organising Secretary Teachers of India (APTI) is organizing its 19th Annual National Convention in Pune during 28th -30th November 2014. The theme of the Convention (APTICON-2014) is “Emerging Trends in Pharmacy Profession and Education”. The convention will focus on the current and contemporary developments, in pharmacy profession and education in the wake of paradigm shift in the global context vis-a-vis the role and responsibilities of students/teachers, researchers in the ever - evolving landscape of pharmacy education and research. In fact, the pharmacist plays a pivotal role in providing pharmaceutical care services and primary health care. In view of the changing demographic needs and dynamic corporate culture, the dimensions of the professionalism are changing with the advent of fast paced technology. It is, therefore, imperative to give new orientation and additional dimensions to pharmacy education and profession. The annual national convention provides an ideal platform to boost the personal and professional grooming of students, researcher and pharmacist in line with the “Seven Star Concept” formulated by International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) and World Health Organization (WHO), which highlights that pharmacist should be compassionate care giver, decision maker, good communicator, lifelong learner, good manager, able leader, mentor, and researcher in order to mitigate the challenges of this fast changing world. In nutshell, this convention provides an important forum to build a national network of pharmacy teachers in this knowledge age. Moreover, a broader interaction among pharmacy fraternity (which includes students, researchers, industrial experts and teachers) will enable us to address, discuss, deliberate and invigorate the diverse issues of pharmacy profession, education and research. With all your support and co-operation, the local organizing committee is confident that this convention will be a grand success and will prove to be a memorable event.
