St. Stephen Parish November 9, 2014 The Dedication of the Lateran Basilica ...“Take these out of here, and stop making my Father’s house a marketplace.” His disciples recalled the words of Scripture, Zeal for your house will consume me. At this the Jews answered and said to him, “What sign can you show us for doing this?” Jesus answered and said to them, “Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up.” The Jews said, “This temple has been under construction for forty-six years, and you will raise it up in three days?” But he was speaking about the temple of his Body. Therefore, when he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they came to believe the Scripture and the word Jesus had spoken. John 2:13 - 22 Our Mission Statement We are a Catholic Community that is called by God to follow Jesus Christ. We believe that we are called to worship God together, to lead God's people along the path of hope laid down by Jesus, to share his message through preaching, through the education and formation of our people, young and old, and through caring service and sensitive outreach to those in need Rev. CONFIDENCE comes not from always being right but not fearing to be wrong. -Anonymous Dear Parishioners of St. Stephen; In recent weeks I have written about the behind-the-scenes discussions going on at the Vatican. Concerning the upcoming Synod on Family Life bishops do not seem to be on the same page. To me, that’s a healthy insight into how our Church works. Our Holy Father is encouraging open and honest dialogue. He is not expecting everyone to agree. Pope Francis is changing the way the Church operates. As someone recently noted, he is not changing the tune but he is changing the key. Last week I referred to the debate between some Cardinals and the book on Mercy by Cardinal Kasper. In reaction several Cardinals then wrote a book in opposition to Kasper’s more “pastoral” approach to challenging issues dealing with family and marriage. Cardinal Kasper has been interviewed in “America” magazine and his thoughts are illuminating. From that interview here are a few of his ideas: --Card. Kasper thought the Pope was very wise in inviting a number of “conservative” participants to the synod, stating that the Pope wants to be fair and not exclude anyone. He wanted to hear from everyone. --He felt that the Synod was very similar to the energy surrounding the time of the Second Vatican Council. At that time Roman theologians had prepared the texts, assuming everyone would simply rubberstamp them and the meeting would be over in two or three weeks. This, says Kasper, is a similar time. --Card. Kasper acknowledged those who are voicing dissent to what and how the Pope is managing church affairs. Again, not so different from the time of Vatican II. He boldly said, “I do not remember such a situation, where in such an organized way five cardinals write such a book. It’s the way it’s done in politics, but it should not be done in the church. It’s how politicians act, but I think we should not behave this way in the church.” --To the question of whether communion is the prize for the perfect or whether it should be something to help the sinner, his response: “We are all sinners. Nobody is really worthy to receive holy Communion. Communion has a healing effect. Especially people living in difficult situations need the help of grace and need the sacraments.” --Far from thinking that the decision to receive Communion should be up to individuals alone, Kasper admits that, “...the sacraments are not just private events; they are public celebrations of the whole church.” He has reservations about all being handled by way of annulment. Using as an example a 10-year mostly happy marriage with several children which fell apart, he said, “This marriage was a reality, and to say it was canonically null and void does not make sense to me. This is an abstract canonical construction. It’s divorce in a Catholic way, in a dishonest way.” --Finally he had this to say: “ Often pastors want to control human life. It’s clericalism. They don’t trust people and therefore don’t respect the conscience of people. Of course, we have to give guidelines from the Gospel and remind people of the commandments of the Lord, but then we should trust that the Holy Spirit is working in the hearts and in the conscience of our people.” Cardinal Kasper concluded, “With Francis, the ‘somewhat pessimistic basic mood’ of the church has given way to a new joy, a spirit of optimism, and a new start.” Amen I say to all this. Let us pray for the Holy Spirit’s guidance of our ecclesial leadership. I, for one, am looking forward to the Synod next year. As you can see, it should prove to be one exciting meeting! Wishing you and your family God’s continued blessings, I am sincerely yours in Christ, your pastor Father Paul F. Warren * * * ****** St. Stephen Women’s Guild Fall Bake Sale Next Weekend! Dedication of the Basilica of St. John Lateran We celebrate today the Dedication of the Basilica of St. John Lateran in Rome because it is the head and mother church of all churches in the world. On the façade of the basilica there is an inscription in Latin which reads, “the mother and mistress of all churches of Rome and the world.” One might think St. Peter’s Basilica is the head of all the churches but in fact it is the Basilica of St. John Lateran. Every bishop has a cathedral and the Pope’s cathedral is the Basilica of St. John Lateran not the Basilica of St. Peter. You may ask “Why is the Basilica of St. John Lateran the Pope’s cathedral and not the Basilica of St. Peter since he lives next to St. Peter's Basilica?” History gives us the answer. In the early centuries Christianity was outlawed in Rome and many Christians in Rome suffered martyrdom. The Emperor Constantine converted to Christianity and the famous Edict of Milan in 313 AD allowed Christians to practice their religion in public. Constantine had been given the palace in Rome that belonged to the Laterani and after his conversion to Christianity he gave it to the Pope. The Lateran Palace was then adapted to become a church and was dedicated on November 9th 324 and the Pope then lived in the Lateran Palace, as it was called, for the next 1000 years and the basilica was his cathedral. It was first called the Basilica of the Savior but later was also dedicated to St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist and so it acquired the name Basilica of St. John Lateran. When the Papacy transferred to Avignon for about a century, the condition of the Lateran deteriorated so much that when the Papacy returned to Rome the Pope lived in two other locations before finally settling adjacent to St. Peter’s Basilica where he now lives... Catholic Divorce Ministry Here at St. Stephen’s Church, and in the Archdiocese of San Francisco, we have a special ministry for those men and women who have experienced the pain of separation and divorce. We believe that the Church has a rich treasury of people, Holy Scripture, tradition, and pastoral ministry on which it can draw to serve its members whose marriages end in divorce. We strive to lay open this wealth and make known Christ’s abundant healing love so that all who suffer from separation and divorce might experience healing, reconciliation, and new life. We also recognize that separated and divorced people, through their vulnerability, suffering, courage, faithfulness, and patient endurance bear witness to Christ and his redeeming grace in the world. They are not mere recipients of the Church’s compassion; they are as well, ministers of that compassion. We have a support group that meets twice a month here at St. Stephen’s. Please call me, Father Al Grosskopf, S.J., 415 422-6698. THE TEMPLE AND WORSHIP In all of today’s readings, the temple is prominently mentioned. Ezekiel speaks of streams of living water flowing out from the temple, watering the desert, bringing life to all living things, offering fresh healing to God’s people. Paul reminds the Corinthians that their faith rests upon the firmest of foundations, Christ himself. More than that, Paul reveals that those who follow Christ are themselves temples, temples of the Holy Spirit; that is, God dwells not only with them, but in them. For the Jews of Jesus’ time, the temple had come to be identified with the presence of God and the only place where authentic worship of God took place. Jesus had a different perception. Jesus identified himself not with the temple, but as the temple. In so doing, Jesus indicated a dramatic shift in what it means to worship God, to be in God’s presence. No longer was a place to be the focus of prayer. Instead, a person, the person of Jesus Christ, becomes the Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. center of our worship.
