MIDWEEK REFRESHER
READ: John 2: 13-22
(Twitter@Pontifex)
Pope Francis’ Tweet
REFLECT: At the time of his conversion the Emperor
Constantine gave to the Bishop of Rome the Lateran
Basilica, a meeting hall on the Coelian Hill in
Rome. Legend has it that on November 9, 324, this
basilica was dedicated to the Most Holy Savior. The
baptistery of the basilica was dedicated to St. John
the Baptist, and in the middle ages the entire basilica
was rededicated in his honor. This basilica remains
to this day the cathedral church of Rome and thus a
monument of great importance to the Western
Church. Like all feasts of dedication, this is a feast of
the Lord and thus displaces the Sunday celebration
in ordinary time. God has always sought to dwell
among his people. No building made by human
hands can really contain him. There were sanctuaries
made by human hands, those first sanctuaries where
the stammering faith of the patriarchs discovered
with dread that God was there; that tent of meeting
which fluttered in the desert wind when Moses conversed there with God face to face; and finally the
temple of Jerusalem which fixed the presence of the
Lord Sabaoth among his people. Very soon, however,
“A good example brings about so much good, but
hypocrisy brings about much evil.”
Pope Francis

Sr. Christiana O
despite their attachment to Jerusalem, the prophets were
struggling to liberate the chosen people from a false sense
of security. They had come to believe that the presence of
God was guaranteed by a stone building. It is rather in the
hearts of a faithful people that God wants to dwell. By faithfully frequenting the temple, Jesus shows himself to be the
worthy successor of those who love the Lord and seek his
presence. His teaching about the "Father's house" prepares for a new order where the ancient cultic sanctuaries
give way to his own person. With the death of Jesus, the
veil of the sanctuary is torn. The true sanctuary is now the
Body of Christ the community of believers. The churches
made by human hands will now be at the service of this
community.

PRAYER FOR NIGERIA
All powerful and merciful Father, You are the God of
Justice, Love and Peace. You rule over all the nations
of the earth. Power and might are in Your hands and
no one can withstand You. We present our country,
Nigeria, before You. We praise and thank You for You
are the source of all we have and are. We are sorry
for all the sins we have committed and for good
deeds we have failed to do. In Your loving
forgiveness keep us safe from the punishment we
deserve. Lord, we are weighed down not only by
uncertainties, but also by moral, economic and
political problems. Listen to the cries of Your people
who confidently turn to You.
God of infinite
goodness, our strength in adversity, health in
weakness, our comfort in sorrow, be merciful to us
your people. Spare this nation, Nigeria, from chaos,
anarchy and doom. Bless us with Your kingdom of
justice, love and peace. We ask this through Jesus
Christ our Lord. Amen.

PRAYER FOR PEACE AND JUSTICE
Dear Lord, we are happy for life here on earth! Heavenly Father, we are deeply concerned about peace in the
world, especially in our communities. We know that true peace is not merely the absence of tension, it is
the presence of justice. We ask for the power of the Holy Spirit to descend upon our communities to eradicate the injustices. We know that injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere and that what affects
one directly affects all indirectly. Send down your rain so the children will be refreshingly bathed. Send
your sunshine so they may bask in the rays. Spread your rainbow so the children will be delighted of its beauty. Let them drink of lemonade from the lemons of life. Our faith is strong in you Dear Lord. We thank you for
the power of the Holy Spirit who you gave us as our Advocate. May you inspire us in our mission as St.
Katharine Drexel Social Justice Committee to bring about the peace and love of Jesus Christ that will truly be
an example of Social Justice both locally and globally. It is well with our soul that you will hear our prayer. We
ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
