Windwood Forrest Witches Halloween Ball was written by our own Clubhouse Players and presented to
the public on Saturday October 4. The cast presented two shows. This made for a very busy day, but
also very gratifying. After all the time and hard work, we applaud the CLC Players for a job well done.
The cast included: Mary Cunningham, Jolene Barham, Kenny B, David B, Matt T, Shirley B, Chris W
and Diane W.

MEMBER PROFILE
Ray Marie

Ray Marie has been a member of Clubhouse for four to five months.
She is our youngest member.
Ray Marie was born July 14, 1993 in Puerto Rico and came to the United States at the age of
five. She is fluent in both the English and Spanish languages.
She began her studies in Puerto Rico at a very young age with Spanish as her first language.
Having been acclimated to the English when she entered America, she did not have great difficulty comprehending picking up on the language.
Ray Marie lived with her maternal grandmother in Puerto Rico. When she moved to the
United States she moved to Allentown to live with her parents. She has three siblings, a sister
and two brothers.
Both of her parents work. Her father has a storage business and her mother is a supply management coordinator for a local hospital. Her older brother also works for the same hospital as a
supply distributor. Her younger brother is a junior in high school. He is studying at the Lehigh
County Technical Institute. Her older sister pulls double duty working at a job and balancing
the care of her two young daughters.
Ray Marie has just turned age 21 and has graduated from William Allen high school. She has
also been employed at the McDonalds restaurant in Trexlertown.
She began attending Clubhouse in June of this year. She keeps busy by doing artwork and contributing as an active member of the Services unit at Clubhouse of Lehigh County.
Helping out

Helping out at Clubhouse makes me feel like I have done something meaningful.. We have
LCCC nursing students that come and participate with our work day. On a day they visited, I
gave them a tour of the house, and we did arts and crafts from paper bag pumpkins to decorating Indian corn. We had a great time working together.
When Clubhouse is closed I like to take walks around the community. I like to come to Clubhouse and check for any trash in the parking lot and flower beds. I like when the Clubhouse
property is clean. I encourage any member to keep our clubhouse clean and presentable by
picking up any trash you see outside of the building.

NOVEMBER 2014
I thought that this year I would research fun and hopefully interesting things about the
Thanksgiving day holiday, There are quite a few things I have learned but have not been
made aware of the following:

Turkeys are responsible for the first TV dinners! and it seems the Swanson misjudged judged by 26 tons, the turkeys they would sell in the year 1953. Rather than
waste them some one thought to slice and repackage them as the first TV dinners
were born.
Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving is the traditional start of the Christmas
shopping season…unless you are a plumber, For them it is the busiest work day of
the year cleaning up after the turkey eaters who have overwhelmed the plumbing
systems the day before!
Only male turkeys gobble, Female turkeys cackle
Ben Franklin wanted to name the turkey as our national official bird!
And here are some facts that I do know.
People with the least find more to be thankful for than many of the rich, They find
the beauty in the e simple things like family, friends and the sound of the rug rats
laughing,
• I know that I am thankful for the honor of working with the staff and members
CLC. They have shown me the true meaning of giving and sharing,
Each year Clubhouse does a double celebration a Thanksgiving time, on Wednesday the
day before Thanksgiving, we serve the traditional Thanksgiving day meal as our lunch
meal. Come join us Nov. 26th for this wonderful meal.

Then on Thanksgiving day, November 27th we will be open from 10am-2pm. A free meal
will be served that day. Come celebrate all we have, together friends, colleagues and
family!

We are well into the fall and soon we
will be cleaning up the gardens to get
ready for the spring. Our big employer dinner is coming up Nov. the
19th and we are looking forward to
seeing everyone attend the event.
Our comedy show on October the
4th, Windwood Forest Witches Halloween was a great success. We continue with Body& Soul every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at
10:30am. Please come and join in.
Don’t forget our big BonTon fund
raiser which is going on at present. A
booklet is $ 5.00 w/ a $10 coupon and
mat be redeemed Nov. 14th & 15th
at all Bon Ton locations. Books may
also be purchased on the internet.
Our Employer Recognition dinner is fast approaching and the Services un it is on high speed
to accommodate what the event demands. There
are so many small details to be worked out, but
we have a great group in our unit who get the job
done. With the help of our members, Family &
Friends and the Drop in Center, our center pieces
and place settings are coming along nicely. The
evening is planned to be very informational, entertaining and relaxing.
Remember those BonTon booklets, they are looking very lonely on Steph’s desk and want a good
home so we need to sell them and give them a
good home until BonTon Community Days
(November 14th or 15th). If we sell enough of the
booklets, Clubhouse gets a portion of the stores
total sales for those days.
Last but not least, we are refreshing the Coupon
Caper’s sandwich board. We are doing this to remind our members of the coupons we have up in
the HUB and the saving that are available to them
at our grocery stores.

CULINARY UNIT:
Culinary Unit has resumed presentation of
Shoppers Education Workshops. We need
members to come up with topic ideas as well
as assist with gathering information, typing
questions and helping present thr workshop.
Culinary unit continues the process of
aquiering a new stand alone freezer. We hope
to have a new one soon if we do not have it
already by this time.
Lately our unit has seen excellent attendance
and participation by the members and as
such we require new and exciting project and
task ideas to ensue that all the members have
the opportunity stay actively involved during
there time here.

STANDARD OF THE MONTH
The International Standards for Clubhouse Programs,
consensually agreed upon by the worldwide Clubhouse
community, define the Clubhouse Model of rehabilitation.
The Standards also serve as a “bill of rights” for members and
a code of ethics for staff, board and administrators.
The Standards insist that a Clubhouse is a place that offers
respect and opportunity to its members.
RELATIONSHIPS
STANDARD 11
Responsibility for the operation of the Clubhouse lies with the members and the staff and
ultimately the Clubhouse director. Central to this responsibility is the engagement of the
members and the staff in all aspects of the Clubhouse operations.

Consensus house operation decisions are made with the involvement of all present Clubhouse members and staff, although, implementation of the condensed decisions are, at all
times, up to the discretion of the Clubhouse management director, (Steph).

Drop-in Center
Wow! The summer has flown by so quickly, however
the Drop-In Center is doing well. We have had many
outings, such as the Allentown Fair, and Q-Mart
continues to be a big hit. Drop-In staff and friends
also went to Toys R Us and picked up two board
games. We are starting something new on Mondays
where a friend partners up with a staff member and
presents a topic such as Self Esteem, Self Confidence,
Coping Skills, etc. Sounds exciting to me. I like
interacting with the friends, because they help me and
we can learn and laugh together. We are always
looking for new friends. Feel free to “Drop-In”!

The Clubhouse of Lehigh County is pleased to announce the release of our new website, designed with a
fresh look and user-friendly navigation, updated with the latest information about our Clubhouse.
The updated pages contain more information about the Clubhouse and its history. You can now find more
information about the units, upcoming events, and many other topics. We also have our referral form,
opportunities and how individual can support the Clubhouse, all under the same roof.
You will be able to review employment and educational opportunities, the monthly social calendar and
lunch menu. One of our main goals was to build a user-friendly and simple to navigate site. The new design
allows the users to quickly find the contents they need, thanks to the hard work of the Clubhouse members,
as well as the web design team at Enter.net.
We hope that you enjoy browsing our new site, finding more options and information each time you visit!

WELCOME CARI

Cari is our newest staff member and she will be working our of the Services Unit. She
seems to like it here and is fitting in quite nicely. Cari comes to us from the Oasis Clubhouse in York, Pa, where she worked in their Kitchen.
Cari was born in Harrisburg. She went to Northeastern High School and then to Penn
State University-York campus. While there, she majored in Human Development and
Family Studies.
Cari’s major responsibilities here at the Clubhouse are managing the services unit. She
will be responsible for the Orientation program, the monthly newsletter, house decorations, the Daily Blurb, as well as helping with activities, cheers for peers and helping with
our biggest event of the year, our Employer Recognition Dinner.
Cari finds our members to be very supportive to one another. She also finds the Clubhouse to be a source of strength in her daily routine. Cari believes that there is a degree of
cohesiveness within the body of the Clubhouse, with members working together for the
good of the house.
I hope that Cari will find the support necessary to do her job well and that the members
will help her with that support. We are glad to have you on board and know that your
presence is felt by all.
Kudos to you Cari. Our house will be better thanks to your efforts.
Current Events

A new study suggests a natural compound found in cocoa, tea and some
vegetables can reverse age-related
memory loss. Using brain scans and
memory tests, the study built on previous work showed flavanoids extracted
from cocoa beans had improved neuronal connections in a mice’s dentate
gyrus, a part of the brain involved with
memory formation. Study participants
who were given a high-flavored cocoa
drink, created by Mars for the study,
went from having the memory of a typical 60 year old at the beginning of the
study, to one that functioned more like a
30 or 40 year old at the end of the study.
Recycling
The Allentown Recycling Center, currently
located on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive will be
moving to Oxford Drive & Fish Hatchery Road
this summer. There will be expanded services
there and the schedule for recycling drop offs
will be announced at a later date. Please note,
green and blue recycling bins will be
available at the new offices, however the
SWEEP and Animal Control Programs will still
be located on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.
