Chances are, you may not really know if you need your insurance changed unless you have a review of your current plan, and there is only a small window of time to check on it. REASSURANCE PROGRAM—Peace of Mind The Reassurance Program, sponsored by the Mattapoisett Police Department, offers Mattapoisett Seniors and their families reassurance that they are being checked on daily. It is reassurance in knowing that help is available in the event the resident does not call in. Senior residents call the Police Department everyday between the hours of 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. As each member calls in prior to 10 a.m., the dispatch officer notes which residents have not called in. The dispatch officer then calls the resident directly. If there is a busy signal or no answer at the residence, the officer then dispatches a cruiser to check on the member. Many Mattapoisett residents do not have immediate family in the area. For this reason, the Police Department started the Reassurance Program so that residents may feel confident that help is available to them. Even if you don’t want or need this service on a regular basis, you may consider signing up for special situations. For example, sign up prior to a big storm so the police will check on you if you lose phone and electricity service; or sign up when other household members are on vacation and you’re alone for a period of time. If you would like to sign up or if you have any questions, please feel free to call the police station at (508) 758-4141. PI 101 Change a Person’s Life; Be a Friend by Susan Keir, Outreach Coordinator Autumn is drawing to a close and the long winter months are just around the corner. We are heading into the most difficult time of year for many senior residents in town. The days are shorter, many friends and family leave for warmer climates to escape the cold; depression and loneliness can become a real issue for many seniors. I would like everyone, family, friends and neighbors, to think about people you know who may benefit from a weekly visit. We all look forward to the holiday season as a time of happiness, coming together with loved ones, socializing and entertaining. For many people it can be quite the opposite; a very difficult time. Depression rates soar during the winter months. Your time and commitment really can change a person’s life. Friendship is an essential ingredient for everyone’s mental health. Consider requesting a weekly visit for someone you know or become a visitor yourself. Those of us who are permanent year-round residents have a responsibility to look out for each other. Friendly visitors are matched one on one with a local senior. They make a weekly commitment to visit or chat on the phone. No further obligation is required. Volunteers benefit by network opportunities with other visitors for support and education. Please consider changing a life. Call the COA to learn more.
