“Woman to Woman”
From the Publisher
Diane Dale
Happy fall…finally. The nights are starting to get cooler and the days are, too! I’ve always loved November
and the much cooler weather. It’s also the start of the
holiday season and the countdown to the end of the
year.
Thanksgiving this year takes on a whole new meaning
for my husband and me. With his recent diagnosis of
lung cancer, we’ve been reminded that every day is so
precious. Every year, we’re thankful for our business,
family, friends, coworkers and the usual things we all
are thankful for…
However, this year, our list of things we’re thankful for
is a bit different from past years…we’re thankful the
chemo seems to be working, we’re thankful he hasn’t
had nausea with the chemo, we’re thankful when his
blood levels come back up, we’re thankful for the
many healthcare providers who are knowledgeable
and compassionate, we’re thankful for the many
thoughts and prayers that are conveyed to us each day
and we’re thankful that we have one more day together…and we’re praying for many more!
Has your “thankful list” changed this year? No matter
what you’re going through, good or bad, try and find
something to be thankful for this year. There’s always
something…most of the time, way too many things to
count!
Let me wish you all a wonderful Thanksgiving and
please, please stop and think of the many blessings
you’ve been given. During the month of November
and from now on, please adopt an attitude of gratitude!
Happy Thanksgiving,
Diane

The 5 Biggest Retirement
Planning Mistakes
One of the primary reasons that people
engage a financial planner is to know if, and
when, they can retire. Just the thought of
retirement can cause anxiety and many feel
overwhelmed and unprepared.
In fact, one of the biggest dilemmas for
those approaching retirement is balancing the
life they want to live today with the life they
want to live in retirement.
There are some common, yet avoidable mistakes that prevent many people from retiring
‘on time’. But with some planning, you can
steer clear of the mistakes that could derail
your retirement.
Retirement Planning Mistake #1: Living
Too Large
The first question I ask clients when discussing their retirement plan is, ‘how much
income do you need to maintain your current
lifestyle in retirement?’ Not surprisingly, for
the vast majority the answer is, “I don’t
know,” or they’ve made an inaccurate assumption. If the assumption is too high, the goal of
retirement may seem absolutely unattainable,
and the entire planning process is discouraging. If the assumption is too low, which is
most often the case, the retiree could run into a
difficult financial situation later in life and
have to make drastic, unwanted changes.
The general rule of thumb is to figure that
you will need approximately 80% of your current annual income in retirement. I have to say
that I’m not a fan of this generality. However,
most people underestimate how much money
they will need in retirement.
Keep in mind that retirees spend more on
travel, entertainment and eating out especially
earlier on in retirement when they have the
time and good health to enjoy those activities.
In their later years, health care cost can escalate.
10
To get a more accurate retirement number,
we like the Kiplinger’s Retirement
Calculator. You will need to have some information handy like your estimated Social
Security payment, any expected income from
pensions and any retirement savings to date.
While you will have to make some assumptions, it will give you a pretty good estimate of
how much you’ll need to save.
Retirement Planning Mistake #2:
Disregarding Higher Health Care Costs
One of the most overlooked areas of retirement planning is estimating what health care
costs could be in retirement, and including this
in the calculation of income needs. A 65-yearold married couple that retired in 2012 will
incur an average of $240,000 in healthcare
costs alone in retirement. By overlooking this
large potential outlay, retirees could feel
strapped for cash in their most vulnerable
years.
Often, people assume Medicare will cover
these expenses in retirement but this simply is
not true. Medicare costs to retirees are rising
each year so it’s important to know what to
expect.
Retirement Planning Mistake #3: No LongTerm Care Plan
Anyone who has cared for an aging parent
knows first-hand the toll it can take on their
loved ones and their savings. Both the time
and money needed to provide quality care can
be staggering.
According to the US Department of Health,
70% of people over 65 will require care at
some point in their lives. In the DC metro
area, the median annual rate for a private room
in a nursing home is $109,580 and it costs $20
per hour for Home Health Care services, in
2013
Given that 50% of claims last more than
N o v e m b e r 2 0 1 4 South Carolina Wo m a n Magazine
one year and medical costs are projected to
continue rising faster than inflation, these costs
adds up quickly.
It’s important to know your long-term care
options and how you plan to pay for these
future expenses if you need to.
Retirement Planning Mistake #4: Not
Saving Enough Then and Now:
Don’t wait to start saving for retirement.
The sooner you get started, the greater your
chance of reaching your retirement goal
because compound interest can work its magic.
To quote Einstein, “Compound interest is the
eighth wonder of the world. He who understands it, earns it … he who doesn’t … pays
it.”
So here’s how the math works: To have $1
million at age 65, a 25-year-old needs to save
$345 per month for 20 years then never save
another cent, assuming the investments earn
8% per year over those 40 years. A 45-year-old
would need to save $1,698 per month for the
next 20 years to reach the same goal.
Those savings goals may be out of reach for
both the younger and older person. The key is
to make saving for retirement a priority and
start saving some amount each month.
Retirement Planning Mistake #5: Not
Updating Your Retirement Plan
Markets rise and fall, as do levels of
income and expenses, so it is important that
your retirement plan be revisited every few
years to take this into account. If your last
retirement plan was done five years ago, prior
to your second child being born, your spouse’s
promotion, and your mother moving in,
chances are your retirement plan is based on a
lifestyle that is no longer relevant.
If you are one of the many folks under 65
that are out of work and struggling to find
employment, you may be considering throwing
in the towel to embrace early retirement. One
of my favorite journalists, Mark Miller, recently wrote a great article, Out of Work and
Under 65? Here’s How to Retool your
Retirement Plan that outlines what you
should do now that your previous plan is null
and void.
Many financial planners will run a retirement plan and dust it off the shelf every 5 to
10 years. We don’t believe that is enough. You
should revisit your plan every 3 to 5 years, or
as your life changes with a marriage or children, so adjustments can be made accordingly.
By making these adjustments often, you’ll stay
on track for a better retirement.

I can remember it like it
was yesterday!
By Joey (Jollene) Blanding
I can remember it like it
was yesterday,
the day reality
hit me like a
downhill
freight train
with no breaks!
The day was
May 17, 2011. I
was on my
front porch with my dad and we took a
picture together. Well, my whole life
changed in that very moment. After my
dad left, I looked at the picture and
instantly was sick to my stomach.
Literally, I had to go in the restroom
because my stomach was so upset.
I sat and cried and wondered to
myself how I let Myself get so
about myself. After serving 8 years in
the Air Force, I became a full time mom
of 3 children. Over the next 12 years, I
slowly lost myself in the monotony of
day to day life filled with laundry, dishes, kids, homework, yard work, house
work and so on! After years of not paying any attention to myself, it became a
self worth issue, or lack thereof.
It was a couple weeks before my 39th
birthday and I made a decision - I did
not want to be a “Fat 40”, my goal was
to be a “Fine 40”! When I first started
my journey to be a healthier person, all
I could do is walk. I physically could
not do much more than that. I started
eating a healthy breakfast in and
I STOPPED eating anything after
8:00pm. These few things got me down
to 186 pounds and I was now mentally
half marathon! Now I had a goal to
work towards and there was no going
back. I started jogging, if that’s what it
actually was in the beginning, maybe in
my mind I thought I was jogging but in
reality just a fast walk. I expanded my
exercise regiment and started a boxing
class with my best friend. This was such
an empowering thing to do and it motivated me to do more. I then added boot
camp classes and personal training to
my regiment. My main focus was to get
better, be healthy and be happy in my
own skin once again.
The struggle was real, the aches and
pains of working out and being so
heavy. But I soon learned that those
pains were minor compared to the emotional pains of being so overweight and
unhealthy. I tracked my weight and
unhealthy. I was well over 200 pounds,
had high cholesterol, high blood pressure and a borderline diabetic. I did
what so many mothers do, I forgot
and physically ready to intensify my
exercising.
One of the first motivating things I
made myself do was sign up to run a
kept visual aids to remind me each and
every day what I was working so hard
for. The weight started coming off, the
running became actual running, and I
12
N o v e m b e r 2 0 1 4 South Carolina Wo m a n Magazine
www.scwomanmagazine.com
was starting to get muscles! I began
noticing that I was a happier person
because of the energy I had, that energy
I almost forgot existed.
It was time for my first half
marathon, the DIVA half marathon in
Myrtle Beach, May 2012. I ran it and I
conquered it! My goal was to run the
13.1 miles in under 2 hours and I did it,
I ran it in 1:57:14 and I couldn’t have
been more proud of myself than I was
in that very moment.
This was the beginning of a new
chapter. I had lost over 75 pounds in a
little under a year and was given an
opportunity to now teach those very
same boot camp classes I once struggled
so much with. I was put in a position
that I could impact peoples’ lives who
felt the way I once did, who were
unhealthy like I once was. The joy I
found in teaching others was something
that was so incredibly rewarding. I
knew without a shadow of a doubt that
I found my purpose on the place we call
earth, and it only took me 40 years!
After a couple of months of living my
dream; I was teaching in a great facility,
had great friends, was healthy and fit
and life just seemed to be at its best. I
had to move. I moved from Sumter, SC
to Myrtle Beach, SC. This took a toll on
me, but it eventually pushed me to do
what I was dreaming of for 2 years. I
stepped out on faith and I opened my
own physical training facility in
September 2014, EMPOWER PERFORMANCE Physical Training! After sending my last 2 children off to college in
August 2014, I now get to play every
day at the place I call “work”. I have the
privilege and honor to work with people every day on their journey to
become a healthier person. Always
remember your “why?” and at the end
of the day, it’s not about being a size 2
or eliminating every bad thing out of
your diet; it’s about being a healthy person and a happy person, waking up
every day and being proud of yourself
and knowing you are worth it.

What Kind of Fabric Is It?
By Kerry Ann Dame
Knowing your
fabrics can be very
helpful when
shopping for your
interior decorating
project. If you’re
familiar with styles
and qualities of
fabrics, you’ll
know what to ask
for or how to describe what you’re
looking for at the fabric showroom.
Here’s a helpful list of the most common types of decorating fabrics:
Prints:
weight makes them mostly suitable for
draperies and bedding. Wovens can be
done in many different patterns:
Having the right vocabulary for the
fabrics you see in magazines and
online can help your search for the
perfect fabric. Knowing how the fabric
is made is important also, since you’ll
know if you should use it for upholstery, slipcovers, drapery or outdoor
projects.

The pattern on a printed fabric is
produced by printing the design on

room, as any pattern can be made as a

Wovens:
The pattern is produced by weaving
threads that are already dyed in the

fabric also has a pattern, and wovens
are often thicker and often more
durable than prints. Cotton wovens
are durable and commonly seen as
plaids, checks and stripes. Synthetic
blend wovens are common for upholstery use. Silks are also produced

Injury Prevention For Running
Begins With
Choosing Proper Footwear
By Kristen Lies, DPT
Know Your Foot
Type
The key to
making sure you
find the correct
shoe for you and
your running
endeavors is first,
knowing your
foot type. The
most important aspect of foot type in
selecting a proper fitting shoe is the
front to back arch (medial longitudinal arch) of the foot in weight bearing
and how it changes while walking.
The midfoot motion is responsible for
movement of the arch of the foot during gait with the navicular bone being
the most important factor in this
mobility. This bone is positioned at
the apex of the arch on the inside of
the foot, and there are three key structural elements that help to maintain
the navicular position and arch height
during standing. First, the anatomical
positioning of the bones of the midfoot along the transverse arch (travels
across the foot from inside to outside)
supports the foot much like a bridge,
with compression making the foot
more stable. Second, the “windlass
mechanism” refers to the relationship
of the plantar fascia along the bottom
of the foot and its influence on elevating the arch while walking. Because
the plantar fascia runs from the bottom of the toes back to the heel, as we
push off of our toes in walking and
our heel rises, this creates tension
along the plantar fascia and helps to
elevate the navicular. And lastly, the
tibialis posterior muscle begins along
the back aspect of the lower leg and
16
inserts into the navicular. Therefore,
proper function and contraction of
this muscle aids in elevating the navicular and maintain arch height during walking.
The above listed foot biomechanics
can work properly or improperly
resulting in the three main categories
of foot type. First, in the “normal”
arch, biomechanics function properly
and the individual has an evident
arch in sitting and in weight bearing.
Although, a minimal loss of arch
height when in weight bearing is still
considered normal.
A pes planus foot, or low arch foot,
has a breakdown in some or all of the
above listed biomechanics for any
number of reasons. This person may
have an evident arch in sitting but the
arch collapses as the person puts
weight on the foot. Or, this person
may not have an arch present in sitting or standing.
N o v e m b e r 2 0 1 4 South Carolina Wo m a n Magazine
Finally, a person may have a pes
cavus foot type, or excessive arch.
This person has an abnormally high
(medial longitudinal) arch that, due to
the anatomical positioning of bones in
the midfoot, does not change much
when moving from non-weight bearing to weight bearing. Individuals
with this foot type will bear weight
more on the outside of the foot and
therefore may be more likely to turn
their foot in and sprain the outside of
their ankle.
What Is Navicular Drop?
The term navicular drop refers to
the loss in arch height as a person
moves from sitting (non-weight bearing) to standing (weight-bearing). A
normal loss of navicular height from
this transition is 6-9mm. If the loss of
arch height is much more than this
that person is considered to have a
pes planus foot type. If the loss of
arch height is mush less then this,
www.scwomanmagazine.com
they can be considered to have a pes
cavus foot type.
The Right Shoe For You!
The “normal” foot type has a good
balance of stability and mobility in
their foot and generally does well in a
neutral shoe. This shoe type provides
enough cushioning for the high
impact demands of running without
providing too much arch support for a
foot type that generally supports
itself!
The “pes planus” or flat foot type is
described as having too much mobility in their foot and needs a more supportive shoe. Stability and motion
control shoes help to provide the arch
support where this individual lacks it.
A stability shoe will be appropriate
for a runner with a mildly excessive
navicular drop. A motion control shoe
will provide even more stability and
is necessary for individuals with more
sever navicular drop, or pes planus.
The “pes cavus” foot type is considered to be extremely supported and
almost rigid. Therefore, this person
generally does better in a minimalist
or neutral shoe type with extra cushioning to provide mobility where the
individual lacks it.
Each name brand of running shoe
manufacturers generally makes shoes
in each of these three main categories.
It is important to try on various
brands of shoes in your category to
find the optimal comfort in other variables such as width, weight, etc.
In some cases of pes planus and pes
cavus it may be necessary to seek
alternative forms management
through physical therapy and/or shoe
orthotics to help achieve the desired
amount of stability or mobility needed. Physical therapy is effective in
instructing proper exercise and providing manual therapy techniques to
facilitate increased mobility and stability where appropriate. This can be
beneficial to rehabilitate current aches
and pains one might have with running and to prevent future ailments
from arising as you up your mileage!

Style-Wise:
Unique Sites for Staying on Trend
by Sara Wise
I love exploring options for keeping our wardrobes fresh, especially
when we’re leading busy lives that
don’t often include time to shop or
big budgets for personal spending.
This month, I’m sharing two of my
favorite services, Stitch Fix and Rent
the Runway.
STITCH FIX
THE CONCEPT: Stitch Fix is a
unique shopping concept that
allows customers to complete a
style profile and receive personalized style “fixes” on a one-time or
recurring basis. Each fix is comprised of five items specially
chosen for the wearer based on her style profile, which factors in body shape,
usual sizes,
lifestyle and
budget.
Customers
can try on items in the
comfort of their home, decide what they
wish to keep, and send back the rest in a
shipping paid envelope. At checkout, Stitch
Fix eagerly accepts feedback on the items
kept and returned to make future fixes even
better.
Katrina Lake dreamed up Stitch Fix after being inspired by
women in her life who always look put together, whether out
walking the dog on a Saturday morning or pulling a late
night at work. Her dream is for busy women to explore their
style through the use of a personal stylist who aims to find
new pieces that fit the wearer’s shape and lifestyle.
PROS: Stitch Fix is ideal for those who don’t have much
18
N o v e m b e r 2 0 1 4 South Carolina Wo m a n Magazine
time or interest in shopping, and it’s just plain fashion fun for
those who love clothing. The service currently offers sizes 014 and is looking to expand into plus sizes soon. Fixes
include pieces that are comfortable and stylish from 200
established and up and coming designers like Tarte, Kensie
and Kut from the Kloth.
Perhaps the niftiest part of Stitch Fix is that stylists take the
time to peruse customers’ Pinterest style boards to get a feel
for their preferences. If you’re
considering trying Stitch Fix, be
sure to include a link to your
style board with looks that you
would really wear.
Also noteworthy, your stylist
will send you suggested ways
to style your pieces so you can
integrate the items into your
existing wardrobe.
Each fix comes at the price
of a $20 styling fee, and if
you choose to keep any of
the items, the fee is
applied toward your purchase. Keep all five items
in your fix and receive a
25 percent discount.
CONS: Stitch Fix’s success means that you may have to wait
up to six weeks for your first fix. Also,
like any new relationship, it may take
your stylist a fix or two to fully
understand your preferences. Still,
part of the fun of Stitch Fix is breaking out of your style rut and trying
new looks.
Stitch Fix pays careful attention to
sizing but may miss the mark on rare occasion. Most of the
time you will receive an item that fits off the rack or that
could be tweaked with simple tailoring.
RULING: I started using Stitch Fix in the spring and have
received a half dozen fixes since then. Each fix was better
than the previous one! Most months I’ve kept one or two
items from my fixes, and last month I kept all five items. It’s
www.scwomanmagazine.com
like a personal Christmas every month.
Stitch Fix has consistently nailed my
sizes, including pants for my difficult to
fit shape. I am amazed at how they do
this, and other friends who have tried
the service report the same great fit,
particularly when it comes to pants.
If you’d like to try Stitch Fix, go to
www.stitchfix.com/referral/3553380. If
you like it, refer friends and you’ll earn
$25 referral credit for your next fix.
RENT THE RUNWAY
THE CONCEPT: Created by Jennifer
Hyman and Jenny Fleiss, Rent the
Runway aims to bring the concept of a
constantly renewing wardrobe to the
budget-conscious by offering its customers the option to rent dresses and
accessories from over
100 designers. I mean
big designers. Vera
Wang. Herve Leger.
Diane von
Furstenberg. Oscar
de la Renta. High
fashion is now attainable!
PROS: If you commonly run with the
gala set, you’re likely
at events with the
same friends and
coworkers. And
while no one would
or should ever judge
you for repeating
your standard formal
dress or two, it sure
is nice to wear something new without
the high price of buying yet another
one-time wear dress.
Rent the Runway also carries daytime dresses starting from Trina Turk,
Shoshanna, Lily Pulitzer and Kate
Spade, to name a few. This option is
perfect for the woman-about-town who
enjoys her high fashion but not the high
price of $300 dresses.
Rental prices begin at $10 for accessories, $25 for day dresses, and $50 for
formal dresses for a four-day rental
period.
Orders
arrive the
day or
two
before
your
lipstick and keys.
Stylists at Rent the Runway are on
hand to help you with sizing questions
and can recommend dresses that suit
your shape. Many dresses even come in
petite, tall and plus sizes.
CONS: It can make a lady nervous
not knowing if her dress will fit until
less than 48-hours before her event.
Start with a low stakes event to test
drive the service.
RULING: Rent the Runway is a great
option for event-dressing. While I have
had three very successful rentals, other
friends have received dresses that didn’t fit. In the event of such a stroke of
fashion misfortune, Rent the Runway
will overnight you another option. I still
advise keeping your old standby dress
around, but I am confident that you’ll
find success with Rent the Runway if
you seek advice from a stylist and know
your shape well. I’ve enjoyed my
rentals so much that I was sad to return
them!

How Did Afternoon
Tea Parties Come About?
by Sandra Rogers, Member of the CYBT Board of Directors
“The very sight of a teapot puts a smile on the face of
most people. One cannot help but think of more serene
and genteel times. From a whimsical child’s teapot to an
elegant English Teapot, to collectible teapots that adorn
some homes, they are a subtle reminder of all that is good
in this world.” ~Barbara Roberts
The practice of gathering for tea and socializing has
been around for thousands of years. During the Tang
Dynasty the Buddhists developed the Japanese Tea
Ceremony for sharing tea in a sacred and spiritual manner.
Tea was first used for its herbal medicinal qualities, and as
once a religious offering. Throughout history, because of
its limited quantities tea has been associated with royalty
and wealth. Now served in virtually every corner of the
world, tea is a beverage rich in both taste and history.
Tea was first discovered in China and arrived in England

during the 17th century when King Charles II married a
Portuguese princess, Catherine of Braganza. During its
introduction to Europe in the 17th century, the only people
who could afford it were the very wealthy. Tea was naturally consumed at sophisticated events and at the royal
court, thus the tradition of dressing up to drink tea was
born.
The afternoon tea party developed as a social event
sometime in the late 1830’s and early 1840’s. It is said that
the tradition of afternoon tea was established by Anne,
Duchess of Bedford, England. She requested that tea and
light sandwiches be brought to her in the late afternoon
because of the long gap between meals. The English had
two main meals, breakfast and dinner. During the middle
of the 18th century, dinner for the upper class had shifted
from noontime to an evening meal that was served at a
fashionable late hour. As she began to invite friends to join
her, the tradition of the afternoon tea party was born.
Elaborate, dressy and elegant affairs, tea parties are a
special event often used today as a celebration for a child’s
birthday, bridal parties and baby showers. Tea parties
remain popular in today’s culture partially because they
provide a chance for children and grownups to indulge in
a bit of elegant socialization and dress up.

Asthma: Don’t Let It Interfere
With Your Lifestyle
By Mark Schecker, M.D.
Coastal Carolina Allergy and
Asthma Associates
Approximately 25 million individuals
in this country suffer from Bronchial
Asthma, including over 6 million children. Annual costs of Asthma are estimated to be approximately $18 billion.
Asthma is the most common chronic
disease in children and the number one
cause of school absences. Similarly in
adults, asthma is a major cause of lost
days and productivity. If you, or your
child, suffer from this condition then you are probably all too
aware of the wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath and chest
tightness that accompany this disease. At its worst, asthma can
be severe disrupting your day to day activities, waking you
from sleep and keeping you from taking part in the things you
like or must do. Fortunately, Asthma can be controlled and
currently should not be a hindrance or interfere with anyone’s
lifestyle, if treated properly.

The exact causes of
Asthma are unknown.
What is known is that
Asthma is a chronic condition in which the breathing passages of the lungs known as
bronchioles become inflamed, swollen and full of mucus. This
inflammation results from exposure to inhaled substances
called triggers. Once inflamed, airways become supersensitive
to exposure to additional triggers and asthma attacks may
result if exposure is great enough. Many people with asthma
have allergies and allergens are some of the most common triggers. These allergenic triggers include inhaled substances such
as animal dander from cats, dogs and other warm blooded
pets, house dust mites, molds and pollens from weeds, trees
and grasses. Food allergy is not a cause of Asthma. Not all triggers are allergens though, and include irritants such as air pollution, cigarette smoke, weather changes, medications like
Aspirin and infections like viral colds, sinus infections and the
Flu. That is why yearly Flu shots are so critical for Asthmatics.
Emotional upsets, crying or laughing may trigger Asthma in
some.
Asthma treatment plans are aimed at the reduction of
inflammation in the airways. Identification and avoidance of
asthma triggers are central to this process and can guide specific environmental control measures to accomplish this. The use
of anti-inflammatory medications that are usually delivered via
inhalation and allergen immunotherapy such as allergy shots
are the other essential elements that assist in achieving satisfactory asthma control. Asthma treatment plans must be personalized to accommodate all different levels of asthma severity and
control and frequent reevaluation is necessary for long - term
effective therapy. It is vital for all asthmatics to have this type
of evaluation so that this can be accomplished and disabling
chronic effects of this disease can be prevented from developing.
If you have, or suspect you have, asthma you should see
your physician or an asthma specialist. Allergists are physicians who are Board Certified in the diagnosis and management of Bronchial Asthma. With a little bit of effort involving a
partnership between patient and clinician, Asthma can be controlled and all asthmatics should live normal interruption - free
lives.
Dr. Schecker, a Board Certified Allergist, is the founder of
Coastal Carolina Allergy and Asthma Associates. He is a
Certified Take Shape For Life Health Coach, a COPE Certified
Health Coach, the co-founder of the Myrtle Beach Marathon
and the founder of Camp Airwaves (a camp for children with
asthma). Dr. Schecker has been recognized as the “Allergist of
the Year” by the Myrtle Beach Herald (2005 – 2013).

“Last Resort”
By Diane DeVaughn Stokes
Every single morning I wake up and say,
“Thank you, God, for another wonderful day.” If
you are like me, I have so many friends who have
cancer and are fighting for their lives among the
insanity of chemotherapy and radiation. I have so
many friends who are watching loved ones wither
away with terminal illnesses. I also know many
who are in debilitating pain and find no joy in
their daily lives. Yes, I am thankful, very thankful
and never take good health for granted.
Last week I was the grocery store and a woman named Liz told me
how CuraLase Laser Therapy had made such a difference in her life.
She thanked me for writing the articles in this magazine. She said she
read about this incredible laser while sitting in the doctor’s office waiting for her appointment.
She had tried everything else to get out of pain from neuropathy,
and nothing worked. She could not sleep; her feet were constantly
cold; and she was starting to depend on a walker to help with her balance. She was miserable. Sadly, as a “last resort” she decided to go to
CuraLase.
After attending one of their free dinner seminars she said, “I knew
this was going to work. It just made perfect sense that this laser would
re-activate my cells and get things healing in there!”
She said she was amazed at the demo that was done at the dinner
seminar and how much more reasonable the price was than she had
expected. Now she tells everyone who will listen that CuraLase
www.scwomanmagazine.com
worked miracles for her, restoring the blood flow in her feet and tossing away her walker!
You can’t imagine how good that made me feel. That is why I write
these articles for CuraLase as they helped me with tremendous sciatica
pain eight years ago. Then they got me out of pain again four years
ago when I was hit by a car and left with broken ribs and 38 stitches in
my forehead. I hurt from head to toe, but each day I felt better following my CuraLase treatments.
Just know that the folks at CuraLase don’t care if they are your “last
resort.” They just hope you will join them for a free dinner seminar
sooner rather than later because they know CuraLase works.
Please call 294-5273 to RSVP for one of the upcoming
free dinner seminars:
Monday, November 3, 5:00 p.m.

Monday, November 10, 5:00 p.m.

Monday, November 24, 5:00 p.m.

Really friends, this laser is simply amazing. No shots, no medicine,
no expensive x-rays. They don’t even need your medical records.
CuraLase Laser Therapy is located at the South Strand Ambulatory
Office complex.
Call 294-LASE if you want to be pain-free and feel as thankful this

HOLISTIC MOM
Non-Toxic Nail
Polishes I Love!
By Meaghan Grettano
I’m not going to lie: while I live
a holistic and organic life, I still
love to have my nails done! I just
love the look of freshly painted
nails and a pedicure. And with the
holidays right around the corner, a
nice bright polish on my nails is
always appropriate! But I must
say, this is something that I have
struggled with for a long time as I
do not want to put the toxic and
smelly chemicals on my nails! It
has gotten worse now that I have a
little girl who also wants to have
her nails and toes painted all the
time. I wouldn’t dream of putting those chemicals on her little fingers and toes!
So, for a long time now, I have been on a search for some
non-toxic nail polish. There are many options out there
which now advertise they are free from formaldehyde,
toluene, and DBP. These happen to be the top ingredients
you want to steer clear of when choosing a good polish!
These ingredients have all been studied and proven to cause
serious health threats, are possible carcinogens, and give off
harsh, dangerous fumes.
Luckily today, there are so many products on the market
which are proving to be more environmentally friendly, and
are better for our health and bodies! While there are no nail
polishes that are completely natural, it’s still important to
make a conscious choice and at minimum, avoid the ingredients I mentioned above. Some of my current favorite polish
brands are…
Zoya • Piggy Paint •Butter London • Mineral Fusion • OPI
These lines offer a wide array of beautiful colors, while not
including the harsh offending ingredients! I am able to find
many of these polishes are stores locally. I also do quite a bit
of shopping online to save time and to be able to find a wider
variety of my natural polishes. And, now that I have such a
great selection on hand, I now bring my own polishes with
me when getting my nails done! This, to me, is so important
because it’s my way of controlling the products that are going
on my body. I love the pampering of getting my nails done
like any other girl, but making sure that polish is as non-toxic
as possible is now a huge priority for me!
So before you get busy with the hustle and bustle of the
holidays, treat yourself to a few new polishes and bring them
with you to your next nail appointment! This little tip will be
sure to leave you feeling fabulously pampered and comfortable, knowing that you’re making a good choice for your
body and for your health!

Overcoming
Depression
and Losing
the Weight
By Star Sade
I have noticed a
few things that can
hinder someone
from losing
weight... and one
of these obstacles
is depression. A
March 2010
review of 15 studies, published in the Archives of General
Psychiatry, linked obesity to a greater risk
of developing depression - and vice versa.
But do people gain weight because they
are depressed? Or do they become
depressed because of the excess pounds they
are carrying? No one knows.
“It’s a chicken and the egg phenomenon,”
says psychologist Leslie Heinberg, PhD,
who directs the Bariatric and Metabolic
Institute at the Cleveland Clinic. “But we do
know that depression has lots of symptoms
that can worsen obesity - appetite disturbances, lack of energy, lack of motivation to
do things.”
In 2009, researchers at the University of
Alabama at Birmingham reported that
depressed people tend to gain weight faster
than people who aren’t depressed.
If you are battling depression and because
of that your weight loss or weight management has become hopeless, first, know that
you are not alone!
There are ways to take care of both the
depression and weight loss.
Here are a few steps that maybe able to help
you.
Step 1 - Set a goal for how much weight
you want to lose. To achieve this, consume
fewer calories every day and burn more
calories every day through increased activity. Make sure the calories you do eat are as
healthy as possible.
Step 2 – Exercise...Examine your current
daily activity patterns. Research suggests
that exercise and activity can improve the
symptoms of depression. Mentally, commit
yourself to increasing your activity level.
Step 3 - Set specific daily and weekly
goals that include the amount of time and
the type of activity you are going to engage
in. Strive to exercise at least 30 minutes a
day, five days a week. Find activities you
like...maybe a yoga class, or a gym with a
trainer or biking?
Step 4 - Seek treatment for your depression. Speak with your doctor about your
plans to lose weight and increase activity.
Call Metabolic Medical Center 843-357-
2851, let us help you reach those goals and
over throw the deception of hopelessness
that depression brings.
Step 5 - Weigh in around the same time
daily. If you stop losing weight for several
weeks, have us here at metabolic medical
center help you evaluate your diet. Once
you reach your desired weight, we can also
set you up on a maintenance plan to help
you maintain the new lifestyle you have
developed.
Let us help you transition into a
new healthier, happier you!!!

On Saturday, Oct. 4, one of the community’s most inspirational events took place in Murrells Inlet. The 2014 In the
Pink Breast Cancer Awareness Walk, sponsored by the
Georgetown Hospital System Foundation, is always a time of
celebration, of remembrance and hope, and this year’s walk
broke records for participation and funds raised.
26
N o v e m b e r 2 0 1 4 South Carolina Wo m a n Magazine
More than 1,300 survivors, family members and friends
from the community participated, helping to raise $39,024.48
for the foundation’s Indigent Breast Cancer Fund.
This is wonderful news for our community.
The Indigent Breast Cancer Fund covers diagnosis and
treatment for qualified women. Since its inception, the GHS
fund has provided nearly 1,000 free mammograms and clinical breast exams along with follow-up care as needed.
That’s important
because the good
news is that breast
cancer is treatable
and survivable, and
help is available.
The South Carolina
Department of
Health and
Environmental
Control reports that
women who are
diagnosed with
breast cancer at the
earliest stage before
any cancer cells
have spread have a
95 percent chance of
survival for five
years.
The very good
news is that women
in our community
can get care close to
home through
Georgetown
Hospital System’s
nationally accredited breast health
program.
Advances in
diagnostics, surgery
and treatment, particularly targeted
chemotherapy, have
improved dramatically in the last 15
years. From biopwww.scwomanmagazine.com
sies to breast conservation with oncoplastic techniques that
preserve the shape and appearance of the breast; nipplesparing mastectomies with simultaneous reconstruction; the
administration of chemotherapy to shrink a tumor before
surgery and digital mammography, including the new 3D
tomosynthesis mammography, Georgetown Hospital System
provides a standard of care and protocols set forth by the
National Comprehensive Cancer Network.
That also includes a Tumor Board made up of breast cancer surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists,
radiologists, pathologists, clinical trials director, breast navigator, physicists and oncology nurses who meet regularly to
evaluate and discuss every single case to ensure seamless
care. This comprehensive breast health program, which is
provided by Waccamaw Oncology, the Francis B. Ford
Cancer Treatment Center, Coastal Carolina Breast Center,
Georgetown Radiology, Georgetown Pathology Associates
and the tumor board, just earned reaccreditation by the
National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers.
Regardless of the team approach to care and the support
of family and friends, the road to recovery for a woman battling breast cancer can seem like a lonely journey. That’s why
the support and presence of friends, neighbors, colleagues
and family members matters so much.
(Drs. Craig Brackett and Angela Mislowsky are physicians with
the Coastal Carolina Breast Center located at the Imaging Center
in Murrells Inlet, the Francis B. Ford Cancer Treatment Center in
Georgetown and 8203 Nigels Drive in Myrtle Beach.)

Understanding the Benefits of
Probiotics For Your Cat
ByKim Hurley, Owner/Vet Tech
Cats Meow Veterinary Hospital
Having a balance of good and bad
bacteria in the gut is what helps keep
you and your pets healthy. Probiotics are
beneficial bacteria that help protect the
GI tract from harmful bacteria and can
nutritionally manage many of your pet’s
digestive issues such as irritable bowel
syndrome, intestinal parasites and infections, gastroenteritis, and stress-induced
diarrhea.
There is no shortage of probiotics on
the market. But not all probiotics are created equal. Solid science and research is
the foundation for any good pet supplement. But to be great, it takes a deeper
understanding and love of pets. Purina
Veterinary Diets – Fortiflora is the result
of years of dedicated research from a
group of passionate scientists who really
believed in what they were doing.
Probiotics aren’t drugs or antibiotics.
They are living microorganisms. Because
of this, they need to be alive to be effective. What good is a highly researched
probiotic if the beneficial bacteria aren’t
alive or your pet doesn’t want to eat it?
Purina developed a special strain of probiotic - Enterococcus Faecium SF68
found in Fortiflora. Using the technology of multiple microencapsulation layers
28
and unique packaging, this probiotic
remains alive from shipping to storage
all the way to the GI tract.
Because one of the most common
problems veterinarians see is recommended probiotic supplement for pets.
Cats Meow Veterinary Hospital learned
the value of this probiotic and highly
recommends our clients feed it to their
cats. It is very palatable and is often
used as an appetite stimulate for a sick
cat or a fussy eater. You simply open the
N o v e m b e r 2 0 1 4 South Carolina Wo m a n Magazine
pouch and sprinkle it on your cat’s food.
No pills!
Cats Meow Veterinary has found
Purina Veterinary Diets - Fortiflora to be
especially helpful in young kittens that
may get loose stools when transitioning
from mother’s milk to food. It is also
very beneficial for cats that get stressinduced diarrhea from situations such as
boarding, being adopted, or a change in
their situation at home - like a new addition to the family, whether it be human
or animal. Any change in diet or an
allergy to something in the food can also
cause diarrhea. Regardless of the cause
of the diarrhea, Fortiflora promotes your
cats’ intestinal health.
Purina Veterinary Diets - Fortiflora
has also been shown to promote
immune health because 70% of the
body’s immune cells are actually in the
GI tract. This is true for humans as well
as cats and dogs. Fortiflora contains
high levels of antioxidants vitamins A, C
and E to promote a healthy immune system.
Feline Herpes Virus I (FHV-1) is a
highly contagious disease among cats
that can cause many vision and respiratory problems. Because the probiotic in
Fortiflora stimulates the immune system, it can help alleviate symptoms cats
suffer from chronic FHV-1. The fact that
you can feed your cat Fortiflora and it
goes into the GI tract and treats a viral
upper respiratory problem like Herpes is
amazing! It can also help kittens before
and during immunizations, as well as
older cats with weakened immune systems or cats that are weakened during
an illness or treatment.
Purina Veterinary Diets – Fortiflora is
only one of the many benefits Cats
Meow Veterinary offers to keep your cat
healthy and happy. Call today for an
appointment for your new kitten or
your senior feline friend and receive $5
off a Wellness Exam when you mention
this article.

Technology
Could Keep
Us Home
Longer
By Kim Fowler
Owner, Fowler Coaching
Technology is
helping us prolong
our stay at home.
When I look at all
of the devices to
help us and keep us
safe, I am overwhelmed. These
products are coming
at us so quickly,
that it is hard to
keep up with what
is available.
Personal Emergency Response Systems
(PERS)— These systems have been around for
30
many years. Most of us remember the granny
who fell and couldn’t get up. They are very
popular and easy to use. These come in handy
for anyone who may be a fall risk or just wants
to feel more secure because they live alone.
Even as a young single adult who lived alone, I
used to wonder who would find me if something happened, and how long would it take?
These devices have been significantly
upgraded over the years. Now they operate
wirelessly or through VOIP (no land line needed). Some even have GPS capability to let the
responders know exactly where you are located.
There are some models with speakers so you
can communicate. Still others can even detect a
fall in case you aren’t able to activate the alert.
These give some comfort to those adult children
who live miles away from their elderly parents.
Motion Monitor Devices—These devices
are great for people with Dementia, Alzheimer’s
or other cognitive impairments, who tend to
wander. The person can wear it like a watch or
bracelet, and it comes with a portable receiver
for the caregiver. The device has GPS technology and the caregiver can set up safety zones
inside or outside the home. The caregiver is
alerted when the patient moves out of those
safety zones.
Another type of monitor is in the form of
shoes. These shoes are equipped with GPS technology. They were originally created for children, but adults who have health problems have
started wearing them. If anything were to hap-
N o v e m b e r 2 0 1 4 South Carolina Wo m a n Magazine
pen, they could be tracked online.
Pill Reminders—There are pill reminder
systems that can not only remind you to take
your dose at the right time, but also alert someone when the correct dose is not taken when it
was supposed to have been taken. The system
will alert the caregiver by text, email or voice
message.
Vital Signs Monitors—Today, a loved one
can have their vitals taken without going to the
doctor’s office. Whether you are concerned
with your parent’s blood pressure, pulse rate or
temperature (and more), you can get alerts
when a daily reading is off track.
Automatic Prescription Delivery—Some
services you can use online will send your parent prescriptions that are pre-sorted into daily
doses with timestamps on them. They will even
contact you before the prescriptions run out so
you have ample time to order refills.
Mailbox Signals—There are mailbox signals
that will let you know when the mail has been
delivered so that you only have to walk to the
mailbox once a day. Multiple trips to the mailbox are eliminated and so the chances of falls
are reduced.
Digital Reminders—These are great lowtech devices that can remind you to do everything from feeding the dog to taking out the
trash. Most of us use our smart phones, but
many older adults still do not use smart phones.
Daily Activity Monitor Systems—Now
there are systems that can monitor everything
from how many times the refrigerator has been
opened to how many times you go into the
bathroom. Would you like to know if your parent went outside today? Now you can, even if
you live hundreds of mile away.
These systems can let you know exactly
what’s going on in your parents’ home by logging onto a website. It works by using sensors.
The sensors are placed on key chains, refrigerator, bathroom doors, pillboxes, or anywhere you
would like to monitor activities. A hub is used
to report the activity and you are alerted by
text, email and a phone app.
There are many options today for us to keep
our loved ones safe, and make sure they get
help when needed. New and improved models
are constantly being released. Of course nothing
can take the place of regular visits and phone
calls, but these products can certainly add peace
of mind to children and loved ones who are far
away.

The One Year Wardrobe Resolution
“101 Things To Be Thankful For”
By Christi Hucks
Every November, my boys and I make a “Thankful Tree”. Each morning I ask them to tell me
something they are thankful for. Then, I write it on a paper “leaf” and clip it to our “Thankful Tree.”
It is a great reminder for all of us to wake up each day with a thankful spirit.
In keeping with the tradition, I decided that for my article this month I would make a “Thankful
List” of 101 things I am thankful for - that aren’t clothing, shoes or accessories. I wrote them down
as they came to mind. They are in no particular order. And this list is, by no means, exhaustive.
Happy Thanksgiving!

How Hearing Loss Affects the Entire Family
Written by Lisa Tseng, MD
Submitted by Jennifer Reed and Kayla Bracy, Owners
Hearing by Design
There are many health conditions that could
be considered a “family affair”, meaning that the
entire family might be affected. An illness such
as cancer, which may require intensive treatments, is one such example. A temporary condition such as a broken leg might require the family to do more to assist the injured person. Other
physical disabilities that required the use of a
wheelchair could necessitate moving to a new
house that allows for a ramp. However, other
conditions such as minor vision impairment that
can be corrected with eyeglasses might not be a
big concern for the entire family.
What about hearing loss? After all, it is the
person who cannot hear well who has the problem, right? Not really, and this issue deserves
more attention than it receives. Hearing loss
affects the entire family. There are many challenges for those with hearing loss, and for those
who are living with them. In many cases when
we are in our homes we are more relaxed and
might have some communication habits that are
not ideal. We may talk to our family members
who are in another room, while the TV is on and
the dog is barking. The dishwasher may be running or there may be other noisy background
noises. People with normal hearing can have
challenges in these instances. People with hearing loss have it worse.
Hearing loss can create frustration for all. If
the television is too loud, one family member
may have to choose to tolerate it, or leave the
room. If sleep schedules clash, one person may
have disrupted sleep due to the volume of a TV
or radio. If people with hearing loss do not enjoy
social gatherings because it is too hard to communicate, they may decide to stay home. Their
32
family then has another choice to make: go
alone or stay home.
There are certainly tips, technologies and
solutions that can make life easier for those with
hearing loss and their families. One of the best
tips to help communications with a hearing
impaired family member is to get their attention
first. Yes, it’s simple, but it will do quite a bit to
make life easier. We all get absorbed in what we
are doing at any given moment and getting their
attention first at least ensures the person is aware
of a conversation. Other tips:
•Try not to change topics without giving
warning. If you start talking about the plans for
the upcoming weekend and then suddenly
launch into an unrelated topic, your family
member may have difficulties following the conversation.
• Slow down a bit. Encourage those precious
grandchildren and others to do the same.
Encourage good communication habits for all.
Pauses in the conversation help too!
N o v e m b e r 2 0 1 4 South Carolina Wo m a n Magazine
• Mute the TV and turn down the radio volume. When an important conversation is taking
place, be sure you have eliminated disruptive
background noises.
• Learn about your loved one’s hearing loss. It
can seem as if they aren’t listening or have
“selective hearing”. This may be the case, but
it’s more likely their hearing loss affects some
pitches more than others. That means they can
hear some voices and sounds better than others.
• If it is vital information you are relaying,
double-check that you were understood!
• Being a “human hearing aid” can also be a
challenge. If your loved one has difficulty using
the telephone, or cannot hear emergency warning signals, consider the many options to help.
The Hearing Loss Association of America is a
great resource: hearingloss.org
Communication is a two-way street. It is the
responsibility of the person who is talking to do
what they can to make it easier. It is also the
responsibility of the person with hearing loss to
use technology to make life easier for all. That
includes acknowledging a hearing problem, and
taking the steps to obtain help. If both parties do
their part, life can be easier!
The holidays are right around the corner
wouldn’t this be the perfect time to consider giving the ‘gift of hearing’ to a loved one for the
betterment and enjoyment of everyone’s lives?
Call us to set up an appointment for a FREE
hearing evaluation for the holidays!

A Woman in Business
Carole Hollingsworth Bowdre
What would you like our readers to know about your
business…MBFH was founded in 2008 to offer the community a more
affordable alternative to funeral service AND at the time not compromising on professionalism. Myrtle Beach Funeral Home is a full-service funeral home offering cremations, traditional burials, memorials,
full funeral services, military services, Jewish services, national and
international shipping services, prearrangements, prearrangement transfers, and bereavement services.
How did you get started in your business? My spouse has been
affiliated with the funeral industry since graduation from Virginia Tech.
He is a Nationally Board certified Funeral Director and Embalmer. I
have worked with hospice for 20 plus years and find it very rewarding
to assist families facing end-of-life issues. My psychology and business
degrees have been very beneficial to me in the funeral death care
industry.
What is the most important lesson you have learned from having
your own business? The importance of providing excellent service,
trust and meeting the needs of the families I serve.
What hobbies or activities do you like to do when you’re off? I
enjoy boating, time with grandchildren and family and walking my two
dogs.
Do you have a philosophy or mission statement with your business? “Always there and always fair”. We strive to provide compassionate, meaningful, dignified, affordable services that reflect the life
that was lived.
What advice can you give to women starting their own business?
Be honest, set goals and always provide excellent service.
What do you think has made you the woman that you are
today? Did someone influence you? I lost my first husband to death at
a very young age. I had a three year old daughter and at the time
thought my life was over. With this experience I realized how fragile
life really is. I learned to appreciate every day, every moment and I
yearned to help others that face one of life’s most difficult journeys,
losing a loved one.

Fast Fixes For This Holiday Season
By Kimberley B.C. Goh, M.D.
Holidays may be the only time that you
see some family members, friends or colleagues all year. You may want to
enhance your looks with a cosmetic procedure before then. You may want to use
your time off from school or work for the
recovery from a surgical procedure done.
The cosmetic procedures which have
the fastest recovery or even no “down
time” usually are the injectables. Injections
may include Botox used to smooth out the
muscles causing frown lines and crows’ feet or fillers used to
fill lines or enhance fullness in the lips.
Placed carefully, Botox can raise or alter the shape of your
brows, soften or eliminate frown lines and crows’ feet. It can
even help with problem areas such as softening the down
turned corners of your mouth and/or relaxing some of the
bands in your neck.
Botox injections are done in a short visit to the office and
the effect is usually seen in three to five days. By examining
the lines, wrinkles and expressions, we decide the areas to be
treated. Facial expressions are used to convey emotions. I
prefer to soften or eliminate wrinkles, but to leave the face
mobile. Botox has to be mixed prior to injection and should
be fresh, ideally used within four hours. Typically the effects
of an injection will last between three and six months.
Injectable fillers are the “go to” procedure right before the
holidays. They have a relatively fast recovery, sometimes just
overnight. Fillers can be used in the nasolabial folds (the
parenthesis around your mouth) lip lines, and wrinkles, even
frown lines. They can be used to make the lips fuller, poutier
or more defined. Hyaluronic acid fillers are the ones I use
most often in my practice for a more immediate result.
Hyaluronic acid is a chemical naturally found in your skin,
soft tissues and joints, so skin testing prior to an injection is
not necessary. They typically last from six to twelve months

events and activities.
Other procedures, such as tummy
tucks and major laser skin resurfacing
are popular when people have more
than one week before they have to
return to “full speed” at work. Tummy
tucks vary in their extent and complexity, and the recovery time needed varies
from about two to six weeks before significant strenuous physical activity can
be resumed. Major laser skin resurfacing involves at least seven to ten days
where socializing and work is not possible.
CoolSculpting is a procedure that has
no downtime and can reduce love handles, saddlebags, bra fat and “muffin
tops” (or as one of my patients said
“Get rid of the Myrtle Beach
Hangover”). It is the process of “freezing” the fat in one area and will permanently remove fat cells without trauma.

It is done in the office and although it
takes about three months to see the final
results, some improvement is usually

Towards the end of the year, we may
worry about how we will look for the
holidays and what can we do to make it
better. We may have put things off that
we have wanted to do but just did not
want to take the time off. Be honest
with yourself and your surgeon about
how much time you really have and
what you hope to achieve. There are
many options available, each with its
own recovery and reward.

least one week and stop eating or taking
anything that can thin your blood
before the injection. This will decrease
your chances of bruising.
There is a different type of “filler,”
called Sculptra; it is made of a starch
like material. It stimulates your body to
make tissue by causing a reaction to the
microscopic starch particles. It can make
the face look less gaunt; restore cheekbones to their original appearance or
even enhance them, and can fill in areas
of soft tissue loss. The tissue will take
about two months to grow, and often
there is bruising, so you have to time
this one well in advance of an event.
There are fillers other than hyaluronic
acid, but I do not use them for soft tissue augmentation. Some of the longer
acting fillers have solid material in them
that may migrate from where they are
placed. This can clump, causing lumps
under your skin. If you want a more
permanent fill, I recommend fat injections, but the recovery time may not be
compatible with the timing for the holidays.
Surgical cosmetic procedures popular
during the end of year depend on the
amount of time you have available. If
you have only about one week off of a
“desk” type job, then body contouring
such as liposuction (with or without
laser or ultrasound, and can be done
under local anesthetic or general) and
breast augmentation or lift is often chosen. These procedures and their various
associated swelling and/or bruising is
easily hidden under the bulkier clothes
of winter. There are a few facial cosmetic procedures with a relatively fast
recovery, such as an upper lid blepharoplasty. Most major facial cosmetic surgical procedures, however, involve temporary swelling and bruising that may
not fit into busy schedules with the holiday social season almost here. A cheek
lift looks good fast, and will tighten just
your cheek. This can be done under
local anesthesia in about an hour only.
A facelift with necklift is more extensive, will clean your jaw line and tighten your neck. If you have a face and
neck lift you will need more than just
local anesthesia. You will look acceptable in two weeks, but you will not
always be completely back to normal in
two weeks. Fat injection to the lips will
cause swelling in the lips for several
weeks so it needs to be timed around

lung surgery for cancer, becoming the leader
in the Lowcountry for robotic thoracic
surgery.
Using advances in robotic surgical technology, we can now operate through a few small
incisions and rely on 3D cameras that provide
magnification at 10 times the normal sight of
a surgeon. By using tiny instruments, we can
bend and rotate surgical instruments well
beyond the capabilities of the human wrist,
providing superior precision and surgical
results. For patients, having a robotic option
means eliminating some of the complications
resulting from traditional open incision
surgery, and having equally good surgical outcomes with smaller scars, less pain, less blood
loss, shorter hospital stays and faster recoveries.
Before Roper St. Francis expanded our
program, Greenville and Spartanburg were the
only other South Carolina locations that
offered complex robotic surgery options for
people with lung cancer and other chest and
lung diseases. Not every patient is a candidate
for robotic surgery, but as with any procedure,
we make sure each patient understands the
benefits and risks, the pros and cons, if their
medical history and surgical need indicate it is
an option for them.
Roper St. Francis’ comprehensive robotic
surgery program uses a collaborative
approach that is aimed at prevention, early
detection and minimally invasive treatment of
lung cancer and other diseases of the chest
and lungs.
As with any surgery or medical procedure,
your doctors’ level of experience and training,
especially with robotic surgery technology, is
correlated with better outcomes. Roper St.
Francis has a highly-skilled and experienced
robotic surgical team which sets our program
apart.

For generations surgery meant a big incision and a long,
painful recovery. Now surgeons have access to new techniques
such as robotic surgery.
Robotic surgery allows surgeons to operate through just a few
small incisions. It also gives them a 3-D high definition view.
The tiny instruments that are used can bend and rotate well

Ask the Organizer
Feeling Scattered? Crazed?
Forgetting Things?
Diana Aversano, Organizing Made Simple
List-making can be your ticket to
calm. You will have renewed focus
whether you type your list or push
a pencil.
The lists I’m talking about vary
from lists of ideas for future vacations, to lists of things to remember,
to lists of whatever is on your mind,
to a Bucket list, to the ever-popular
to-do list.
How does making a list do its
magic, and in so doing rescue us?
1. By writing them down, those
certain thoughts vacate the premises of our minds, leaving
room for whole bunches of other thoughts. The relief and
capacity of a clutter-free mind is amazing.
Try writing certain thoughts down so they aren’t in your
brain to get whirled around and around.
38
N o v e m b e r 2 0 1 4 South Carolina Wo m a n Magazine
When that transfer happens, we have more room up there to
come and go as we please.
A racing mind overloads our thought spaces and robs us of
peace of mind.
2. By writing them down, those certain thoughts are now visible so we don’t have to keep trying to remember them. In
short, lists give our memories a big helping hand. Ever think
you’re going to remember to do something that you really
don’t want to do? Isn’t it amazing how it gets forgotten despite
our best efforts? The list remembers those things for us!
Try the evolving-grocery list. Make entries of products that
are only half empty instead of already gone. Or, one better,
enter those products when one is empty and the backup comes
into action. It will make shopping a snap. Goodbye to running
to the store when wediscover an essential ingredient missing
from our pantry.
Try the password list...priceless!
Try the errand list. Quickly jot down your route so your trip
will be efficient and distractions won’t lead you astray.
Try the social media game plan list of what you’ll say and
when you’ll say it for months in advance.
3. By writing thoughts down, our stress level drops immediately.
Making a list brings order to tasks, especially when a project
involves many steps to complete. A quick glance at a list will
show what’s been accomplished, and what else needs to be
done. Plus, physically checking off completed items with a
pencil is so much more rewarding than doing it mentally!
Try the list of online holiday gift prices as you comparison
shop.
Try the list of all things you take with you on a trip. It will
reduce the anxiety of worrying if you’ve forgotten something.
Try the reference list. List names and contact information of 4
good job references that you can have ready in case a potential
client or employer requests them.
Try the to-do list for daily, weekly, or beyond plans.
Try the checklist for your school back pack, your diaper bag,
your golf bag.
Try your “Remember-to-Bring” checklist of essentials for the
beach, club meeting, work, etc.
A hard copy can be physically posted in a conspicuous spot so
you can quickly see if anything is missing.
Lists are inspirational and freeing. Don’t allow your lists to
make you feel guilty or annoyed.
So write it down, get it out of your head, and calmly
carry on with your productive day!

Laser Hair
Removal: Long
Lasting
Solutions for
Unwanted Hair
Submitted by DermaVogue
DermaVogue uses the Light Sheer® Hair
Removal System. Light Sheer® is a non-invasive
light therapy device specifically designed to
eliminate undesired hair from all parts of the
body. The process uses intense pulsed light to
gently remove unwanted hair, putting an end to
routine shaving and waxing. This patented technology delivers long-lasting results. It treats larger areas such as the back, shoulders, arms, legs,
and face rather than treating one hair at a time.
Light Sheer® uses pulsed light to remove hair and
impair hair regrowth. Pulses of light safely penetrate the skin and disable hundreds of hair follicles simultaneously. You may feel a slight pinch
or the snap of a rubber band. You can return to
work the same day and resume all regular activities, but it’s always a good idea to limit sun
exposure.
Get to the root of your unwanted hair problem with safe and FDA approved Laser Hair
Removal Treatments from DermaVogue.
Laser hair removal is an FDA approved, noninvasive cosmetic procedure that has been proven
safe and effective for the removal of unwanted
hair. In the early 1990s, the first reports of using
laser energy to selectively damage and disable
actively growing hair follicles were published.
As laser hair removal procedure has been
refined, it has become the preferred method for
hair removal, replacing shaving, tweezing, waxing, and electrolysis.
What is Laser Hair Removal and How Does it
Work?
Laser Hair Removal uses a visible light laser
to gently remove unwanted hair, ending the need
for routine shaving and waxing. Advanced Laser
Hair Removal technology improves upon the
older, painful hair removal treatments to provide
long-lasting results. Because the laser treats large
areas, it is possible to treat areas such as the
back, shoulders, arms, legs and face. Current
Laser Hair Removal treatments are a safe, fast,
gentle, and effective method for hair removal,
leaving your skin looking and feeling smoother
and silkier.
Laser Hair Removal literally goes to the root
of an unwanted hair problem, the hair follicle
itself, as the procedure disables the follicle’s ability to produce more hair. Results and treatment
requirements can depend on the darkness of the
hair and the hair follicle’s growth stage at the
time of treatment – both issues that will determine the number of sessions required to get rid
of the unwanted hair.
In order for hair to be treatable by this procedure, it must be in a growth stage. This means
that Laser Hair Removal requires several sessions as all hair follicles are not in the same stage
at one time. Treatment areas must be shaved
before they are scanned with the laser. Laser
energy passes through the skin and is absorbed
by the pigment in the hair follicle, disabling all
treated hair follicles in a fraction of a second.
Treatments can last from a few minutes to a few
hours depending on the size of the area being
treated.
Who – and – What can be treated with Laser
Hair Removal?
Laser Hair Removal works best in lighter
skinned, darker haired patients. Because the primary target in hair follicles is melanin pigment,
www.scwomanmagazine.com
less laser energy is absorbed by the skin and
more by the hair follicle. Tanned skin reduces
laser energy as it passes through the skin to the
hair follicle. Because the pigment in the hair is
the target for the laser energy, gray or white hair
(which lacks pigment) cannot be effectively
treated with any laser or light-based device.
The quickness of the treatment, combined with
its long-lasting effects and the large areas that
can be treated during one session, make it the
hair removal solution of choice for many. Laser
Hair Removal works on the face, armpits, bikini
areas, back, legs, arms and chest.
Are Laser Hair Removal treatments painful?
Most patients tolerate the procedure well.
Some patients describe the procedure as feeling
like mild stinging or pinching, but this discomfort subsides when each treatment ends. Side
effects, if any, are minor.
What can I expect from my Laser Hair
Removal treatments?
Sessions are quick (usually about 15 minutes)
and can cover large areas. Since all hairs are not
in an active growth phase at the same time, the
time when they are most affected by the laser,
four to five treatments are needed to remove all
unwanted hair. Each treatment is scheduled a few
weeks apart to ensure that all unwanted hair is
eliminated. The female face, armpits, and bikini
lines are areas which respond fastest to laser
treatments- backs, arms and legs usually need
more treatments over time.
Removing hair does not make it grow back thicker, darker or quicker; hair in treated areas may
actually come back slower and thinner. Regular
activities may be resumed immediately following
treatment.

Plastic Surgeons and Plastic Surgery
By Steven K. White Sr., M.D.
Carolina Coastal Plastic Surgery & Medical Spa
It goes without saying that
Plastic Surgeons should do Plastic
Surgery. Right?! Well, unfortunately this is not always the case!
Plastic Surgery involves two
important components: Cosmetic
and Reconstructive. Reconstructive
Plastic Surgery involves an operation that tries to bring normalcy to
a genetic defect, congenital abnormality, trauma victim from abuse
or violence, burn injuries, etc. Cosmetic surgery is a multibillion dollar industry, cash or credit up-front surgery that
enhances the normal patient. The patients in this category
want to look better or feel better about themselves. Hence,
a lot of practitioners (not plastic surgeons) are “dabbling”
in this practice. Why you ask, because it can be lucrative
and the lay public doesn’t really understand their qualifications.
A board certified plastic surgeon will have a minimum of
six years of surgery training after medical school (usually
eight) and this doctor has to pass rigorous written and oral

exams to become certified. In addition they have numerous cases they have photographed, worked-up, and operated on to present for scrutiny. But, there are also other
things to consider.
1) When you are considering Plastic Surgery, pick a
Plastic Surgeon. If you don’t like him or her, choose
another one. In the state of South Carolina there are more
than fifty board certified Plastic Surgeons.
2) Where is your surgery going to be done? The
Surgeon should be operating on you at a Certified Surgery
Center that has peer review, credentialing, safety standards, routine inspections, approved housekeeping, OSHA
standards for all personnel, HIPPA standards, and
approved sterilization criteria etc.
3) The operations that fall under Plastic Surgery, to
name a few, are:
• Liposuction
• Face lifts
• Rhinoplasty
• Abdominolplasty
• Otoplasty
• Breast augmentation and lifts
• Buttock augmentation with fat grafting or implants
• Eye lid surgery
• Neck lifts
• Forehead lifts, etc.
4) Finally, if you have a complication, who is going to
take care of you? This is the most important point for you
to consider. A Doctor should not operate on you if they
cannot take care of your surgical complications. The key
point is that if you have to go to a hospital with serious
infections that Plastic Surgeon (the board certified surgeon) will be able to take care of you at the hospital. Most
of the Doctors who dabble in Plastic Surgery cannot operate on you at the hospital or surgery center, and certainly
may not be credentialed at that hospital. Many are not
even surgeons. So… don’t be swooned by all this marketing; do your research, and choose a board certified Plastic
Surgeon you feel comfortable with, and just do it. Maybe
you have been considering a surgery for a while and it’s
on your “bucket list”. If so, choose a surgeon, have a consultation and ask to see their photographs to help you
understand the surgery you are interested in. At Carolina
Coastal Plastic Surgery & Medical Spa we take great pride
in our patient relationships. We spend time with you to
make you comfortable with your choices, your surgery
plans, and our staff. Remember there are no guarantees
but in the right hands your plastic surgeon should deliver
what you want.
And remember, “You Imagine, We Create.”

How did you get started in your business?
After moving to Myrtle Beach in 2013, I

What is the most important lesson you
have learned from having your own business?
Two things really, Research everything

before you make a decision and hire good
people.
What hobbies or activities do you like to
do when you’re off?
My favorite thing to do is to spend time
with my husband, family and dogs. I also
love walking and reading on the beach. And

surprisingly enough, I like to paint for pleasure.
What advice can you give to women starting their own business?
Don’t let other people influence the direction of your company. Everyone has an opinion of what you should do and how you
should do it. You decide your own destiny…don’t let someone else decide it for
you by the power of suggestion.
What do you think has made you the

“Don’t Be A Worm In Business”
By Gina Trimarco Cligrow
You’ve probably noticed that
after a heavy rain there are a
lot of worms on the ground.
We’ve had a lot of rain lately
and our carport/yard area was
laced with worms last week,
more than usual. It was disgusting for two reasons: 1) I
have a bad habit of walking
out there barefoot when I take
the dogs out and 2) My dogs
like to eat them (and get sick
afterwards)!
On this day in particular of
excess worms, I was not in the best of moods because of
things being said about me behind my back. Talking to
myself I literally said out loud, “Geez, there are frickin’
worms everywhere … and wow I figuratively have some in my

life as well!” It was such a weird and surreal revelation at
that moment.
My figurative worms were (are) people in the business
world who behave slimy on the outside and appear ugly
on the inside. And not just towards me, but to others as
well. People who make my skin crawl, just like real worms
do. As I continue to grow and change in my business and
as my business continues to grow overall, I’ve experienced
human behavior that is deceptive, desperate, fake, unethical, manipulative … and sometimes just mean. I’ve personally experienced it and I’ve watched other entrepreneurs
experience it (including my brilliantly smart entrepreneur
husband). As a victim of a con crime, I’m highly intuitive
and easily triggered by
“shady”, worm-like
behavior. I can smell a
liar a mile away!
Sometimes I hate
being so intuitive
because I want to see
the best in everyone.
But in business it’s intuition
that will catapult you to success.
To survive and thrive in business, this is what I’ve learned is
important:
- Watch what you say, how you say it and who you say it
to
- Surround yourself with people like you (including
clients)
- Take a stand for your integrity
- Be ethical and transparent, while having the best interests in mind for your clients, team, vendors and supporters (in addition to yourself)
- Ignore the “haters” – it’s none of your business what
they say or think about you
- Be authentic in who you are and you will attract who
you are meant to serve and be with
- Trust your intuition
- Don’t be a worm … you might get stepped on (or eaten)

Do Something Great for
Less Than 40 Cents a Day
By Rick Wasserman
One of the most misused and misunderstood words in the English language is “Hero”
What is a hero and who are our
heroes? Are they great athletes? Are
they famous celebrities? Do we even
know a real hero? Probably, he or she
may be a relative or a friend. Maybe a
neighbor, someone at work, or a person you pray with. You may know one
but are not aware of their heroics.
Heroes are regular people who
serve our country. We know them as our veterans
and active military personnel. Maybe even you
or a loved one is a hero. We live in a great country called America even though it is not perfect
we owe all of them more than we can ever repay.
Too many American’s take our liberties for
granted and forget the great selfless sacrifices
our heroes have made and continue to make
every day to protect our way of life and our right
to openly disagree and complain about our
imperfections.
Fans of America Foundation has a mission to
provide safe and adequate housing for our
heroes. You and every American have the ability

A Visit to the Spa
–Luxury or Necessity?
By Teresa Kerr, Nail Specialist & Esthetician &
Tomalina Coggins, LMT/Esthetician
Owners, August Spa & Wellness
With today’s
fast paced, not
always healthy,
lifestyles women
and men alike
are finding that
the spa is calling
more and more
often and not
just as a getaway from the
stress of the
daily grind but
as a necessity
for their wellbeing. In addition
to lifestyle, environmental factors play a role
in how we look and feel each day, many
of the hidden health benefits of both
regular facials and massage can help
heal damage from outside influences as
well as serve to prevent future damage.
For most, the healing and health benefits of massage therapy are well known.
Most often a massage therapist will discuss your specific goals and pains you
may be experiencing prior to the start of
the session to ensure their work is the
most beneficial for your body. With regular massage, you can experience a
number of benefits including lowered
stress and blood pressure, pain management, improved blood circulation as
well as relief from sinus issues and
overall reduced anxiety.
Facials have also quickly emerged in
the last decade as a tool for wellbeing
and skin care that continues to evolve as
new techniques and products are rapidly developing to meet the needs of
today’s skin. Once again environmental
factors and lifestyle, such as increased
sun exposure with our coastal living,
cause our bodies to not feel and look as
great as they should. Regular facials are
not only beneficial for clear skin, they
N o v e m b e r 2 0 1 4 South Carolina Wo m a n Magazine
stimulate collagen and
elastin which
essentially acts
as exercise for
your skin
helping to
increase skin
tone and provide antiaging results.
With multiple benefits to
spa treatments
now widely
recognized,
the days of a
luxury trip to
the spa once
or twice a year are gone!
Estheticians and Massage Therapists
now recommend a regular schedule of
maintenance every 2 to 3 months. To
accommodate this increase in visits and
expense, many spas and treatment centers now offer ongoing specials and
packages for their loyal customers. The
relationship you develop with your
Estheticians and Therapists is an important one to help keep your body and
mind refreshed and functioning at its
peak, therefore it’s beneficial to take the
time and seek out a professional and an
environment that works best for you.
August Spa & Wellness is located just
south of the Market Common on HWY 17
Bypass on Palmetto Point Blvd. Owners

“Feeling gratitude and
not expressing it is like
wrapping a present and not
giving it.”
William Arthur Ward
Thanksgiving. How sad
that we collectively give
thanks only once a year.
Praise needs to be our daily
posture. I remember so
fondly our church’s annual
Thanksgiving service of
past years, held in the
quaint, historic chapel on our
campus. Our rector gave a short sermon
on the history of Thanksgiving, and then
began a sweet litany of gratitude for
things beginning with the same letter...for
pumpkins and pansies, sundaes and shower heads, hummingbirds and hammers. I
think of those things and how they enrich
my life. I also go through my personal
blessings for which I am deeply grateful:
for my family, friends, health, and a roof
over my head.
But as I make this list I realize that one
day all of these gifts will either be gone or
changed. Today I want my gratitude to be
for eternal things, for blessings that will
remain forever, because they emanate
from the God who is without end. I consider and make a list of a few of the abiding, unceasing, inestimable gifts which
God has given us. I am making each of
these statements personal, because I can’t
speak for each of your lives, but those of
you who agree with these affirmations,
please make them your praises too!
First of all, that I can approach and
fearlessly address the Creator and
Sustainer of the universe, the Holy One,
the great I AM as a dearly loved child
looking into the face of my loving
Father...that is astounding. I can’t take
that privilege too lightly because it was
bought at a great price. That I am and
have always been the object of God’s love
takes my breath away because, honestly, I
have had many days where I’m not at all
lovable. Psalm 139 also says that I have
been on His mind from before time began,
and that He knit me together perfectly and
purposefully. He knows every thought
before I think it, every word before I
speak it. He never, ever stops thinking
not hot one day and cold
the next, or stingy on one
occasion and generous
another. He is Constant,
Steadfast, always Good.
In the midst of a fluctuating, uncertain world, He
is the Permanent,
Perpetual PromiseKeeper.
So why do I voice
God’s greatness now?
Because giving Him the
glory and thanksgiving
which He deserves gives
us the stability that we need. Let’s be honest. Some days we forget His unchangeable attributes. Our here-and-now realities
can blind our eyes and get us off track.
Even a picture pretty day like
Thanksgiving can knock us off balance
because relationships can be far from
ideal. Nerves can get frayed and feelings
can get hurt. This is still a broken world,
after all. That is why we need to remember that God is faithful, gracious and loving even on those kind of days. That is
why He is called the Redeemer, and isn’t
that the biggest Thanksgiving of all?

for which I give thanks...His grace. How
He has showered me with His grace! And
He is not done because there are so many

That’s Wright
I Had Such A Great Case... What Happened?
By Jill Wright
By this, I am referencing a typical
response when the jury comes back with a
verdict that fell far below the expectations
of the client. An unfortunate, but common, occurrence in Horry County these
days. “What happened?” they dare ask. To
explain, I will pose a hypothetical case of
a man named “John” (who is fictitious
and does not in any way represent my
clients.)
Let’s say John suffers a personal injury
from a car accident caused by another
person’s negligence. John calls a lawyer’s office ready to collect compensation for his injuries. After a determination that his injuries are
legitimate, that John did not cause the accident, and that the accident
did in fact cause John’s injuries… his lawyer agrees to represent him.
First things first…. The lawyer must determine John’s total damages.
48
N o v e m b e r 2 0 1 4 South Carolina Wo m a n Magazine
For purposes of illustration, let’s suppose that John’s total medical
bills are $10,000. Although his medical bills are high, he luckily has
suffered no broken bones, fractures, or dislocations. He does suffer
from what is affectionately referred to as a “soft tissue injury.”
Combining John’s medical bills, lost wages, pain & suffering, etc., the
lawyer values John’s case between $20,000 and $30,000. Sounds low,
but the lawyer must consider that John’s injuries are “soft tissue” by
nature and unfortunately for John, there is a public perception that soft
tissue injuries are not serious enough to warrant large verdicts. This is
true despite the enormous amount of pain they cause. Relying on this
public perception, the insurance company for the at-fault driver refuses to give John a reasonable settlement offer. Therefore, John must go
to trial.
I do not have enough space in this magazine to fully explain all of
the complications associated with personal injury lawsuits. Suffice it
to say that there are no “slam dunk” cases. As with most issues, the
law has a way of painting a dark gray cloud over the clearest of
visions. Continuing with my John hypothetical…. Remember that
John has $10,000 in medical bills. Let’s say that the ultimate settlement offer from the insurance company is $20,000. John refuses to
accept the settlement offer despite the lawyer strongly urging him to
accept this offer. (Please note that the lawyer believes John’s reports
of pain and problems, but the lawyer also knows the reality of risk in
facing a jury trial. Unfortunately, lawyers do not decide cases. Juries
decide cases.)
Juries are made up of twelve strangers who do not know John from
Adam and who rarely succumb to all consuming passions for awarding verdicts to people just because they were involved in a car accident. All John’s lawyer can do is provide legal advice to John about
his chances at trial based upon his or her legal experience. In this
case, John was advised that there is a chance he could get more than
the $20,000 offer from a jury, but legal experience dictates that the
chances are slim. For whatever reason, John dismisses the lawyer’s
advice as self-serving and exercises his right to go to trial.
John goes to trial. John gets $12,000 from the jury. Now John is
furious at the injustice of our justice system. “What happened?” he
asks. “My neighbor in Maryland who was in a car wreck received a
lot more money than this!” He blames his attorney.
While I will never know for sure what runs through a jury’s mind, I
consider myself a perpetual student on the matter. (And, I have been
known to question a juror or two about the logic of their reasoning.)
During my years as a trial attorney, I have discovered a few things
that seem to serve as stumbling blocks to John’s receipt of the anticipated larger verdict. Let’s make it fun and reduce it to the form of the
well-known David Letterman Top Ten List.
Ten Reasons Why John’s Case Deflated At Trial.
Number 10: Jurors begin fantasizing about anger management classes
when John overwhelms them with hostility and anger over the other
driver’s negligence.
Number 9: Juror 2, 7, and 9, being young mothers, instinctively reach
for a pacifier when John starts whining about their injuries.
Number 8: Jurors are reluctant to award high verdicts due to the
inundation of Allstate commercials about how lawsuits cause their
insurance premiums to go up.
www.scwomanmagazine.com
Number 7: Juror number 4 and 8 have
metal screws in their backs from fusion
surgery and frankly feel zero sympathy for
John’s neck “strain.”
Number 6: Jurors, when looking at pictures
of John’s vehicle, have to squint to locate
the dent.
Number 5: John needed $6,000 worth of
chiropractic treatment because of the accident, but he has visited the chiropractor for
similar treatment every month for the last
seven years.
Number 4: For the past year, John has suffered the unfortunate luck of finding himself
in an “accident” every month that ends in “y.”
Number 3: Jurors are ready to award John
an Oscar for his performance in the category
of “best exaggeration of the truth from the
witness stand.”
Number 2: Jurors have run out of fingers
counting the number of contradictions in
John’s trial testimony.
Number 1: Jurors hate to award verdicts
that double their annual salary.
So there you have it. Again, I am a
Plaintiff’s lawyer and the vast majority of
my clients do not fall into any of the above
categories. I am not meaning to make light
of a serious situation. In fact, it is the seriousness of the situation that motivates me to

Thaw puff pastry in the refrigerator for

Dust flour on top of the pastry as well.
With a rolling pin, roll the dough out to

Using a butter knife, layer the mustard on

With a sharp knife, slice the dough into

GIVING YOU MORE IN (SOCIAL) MEDIA
Holidays Pamperings; Just
Do It Your Way!
By Dorien Morin-van Dam
Who loves to get pampered? Go
ahead, raise your virtual hand. How
you get pampered and the why and
when varies which each person, am I
right? For example, the holiday season
is a very stressful time of the year! If
you are getting your life (and home)
ready for the holidays, you might
already be feeling some, or all of this
stress coming at you.
This issue of SC Women Magazine is
all about Holiday Beauty and Spas. As I see it, it is a necessity
to pamper yourself during the holiday season! Yes, you heard
me, do not just pamper your lovely home and give gifts to your
friends; pamper yourself, too! Don’t we all deserve some pampering sometimes? Well, why not do it during the most stressful time of the year (and when you can snag up some great
deals, too!)?
Right about now, my husband would be in a heap on the
couch, laughing, if he was to read this. I am the not typical
mom and wife as I dislike
the typical way most
women like to be pampered; I used to keep my
hair long and in a ponytail to save on haircuts
(once/year). I dislike
pedicures. I have only
had my eyebrows waxed
once (before a TV interview) and absolutely
have no desire to ever
have another massage. Spas are wasted on this mama, yet give
me a book, a pot of coffee, some chocolate and a few Saturday
morning hours to myself and all is well in my world!
Pampering takes on different meanings, depending on the individual!
My advice to you is to pamper yourself and give the gift of
pampering to your loved ones and friends, too. Hey, even your
pet deserves to be pampered!
And here is the fun part! I am going to let you in on a few
secrets on how to get the best deals, finds and how to do it
right from your couch!
I give you 10 pampering ideas for the important people in
your life, including yourself –and you don’t even have to
change out of your PJ’s and slippers and you don’t have to wait
until 12/25 to take advantage of it!
1. Body Pampering (spa, massage, pedicure, hair and nails) look online for the best reviews and deals; as in coupons, two50
N o v e m b e r 2 0 1 4 South Carolina Wo m a n Magazine
www.scwomanmagazine.com
for-one and holiday discounts. Don’t discount looking at sites
like Travelocity for reviews and to find local businesses. 13
million visitors come to the Grand Strand and many of them
pamper themselves while on vacation. They leave reviews of
all our local spas, hair salons, massage therapists and nail
salons for us. Convenient? I think so!
2. Time Pampering - hire a cleaning company and give a gift
card (find them online or ask your local Facebook friends).
3. Pet Pampering – give someone the gift a doggie daycare,
pet grooming or a dog walk! Pamper your pet by signing
him/her up for the Bark Box Club (monthly subscription service)
4. Kid Pampering – find local deals on museums, sports
complexes and fun activities, including indoor skating, miniature golf and more online. Often, you get a deal for just ‘liking’
a Facebook Page or going to the website to print a coupon.
Local waterparks often have discounted season passes if you
buy before the end of the year! Take advantage of it now and
enjoy pampering later.
5. Food Pampering – look into delivery service form local
supermarkets and give the gift of food and time! Many local
supermarkets also offer ready-to-eat-meals for pick up. All you
do is pick out your sides and main course, order and pick up!
6. Couples Pampering – what ever you like to do as a couple, give yourself or someone you love a bit of extra pampering. Think restaurant, movie gift cards, fishing license. Be creative; check online ads for two-for-one deals and check back
often.
7. Electronic Pampering – Does someone you love love gadgets? Find deals on Black Friday and/or Cyber Monday. Make
sure you know make/model of what s/he wants! Order or
buy one of those days to get the best deals.
8.Parent Pampering – Start, or find, a babysitting co-op.
Enlist grandparents, aunts, uncles or neighbors to help with
little ones so parents can shop, cook, decorate and plan for the
holidays ‘sans children’! Print a ‘babysitting coupon’ off your
computer to make it fun!
9. Movies and Book Pampering – Give the gift of unlimited
movies by giving someone Netflix and unlimited reading by
giving Kindle Unlimited. Or order books online for those you
love.
10. Romantic Pampering – OK, so if you didn’t think any of
these ides are good enough for the one you love (or for yourself), give the gift of romance. Do this: set up a monthly
reminder on your (Google) calendar to order one gift each
month, online (let’s keep it easy!). Let it be flowers, clothes,
books, food, coffee or whatever it is. Giving a small gift each
month might just make you the most loved spouse, friend, sibling or child on the Grand Strand!
Many of you still like to go out and shop; seeing and touching what you buy before buying. If you do go out this holiday
season, shop local! Help local companies stay in business. On
Saturday November 29, many local businesses participate in
Small Business Saturday, offering discounts and deals for
shopping and keep your dollars local.
Pampered and loved,

Lose Inches and
Look Your Best
by the Holidays!
By Dr Kevin Sattele
Almost everyone will have several functions to attend in the next
couple of months as we approach
the holidays. Like most people,
you probably want to look and
feel your best and losing weight
will certainly help in that regard.
If you want to know the easiest
way to lose those extra pounds
and inches, then read on to find
out just how easy it can be.
Always start with lifestyle
modifications and have a great diet and exercise regimen.
Diet is always the primary part of any weight loss program
and we have found it accounts for about 75% of the weight
loss in our patients. Exercise always helps but following a
proper diet needs to come first. With those in place, everything else will be much easier and give better results. There is
no substitute for regular exercise, and aerobics is certainly
best for weight loss, as well as improved cardiovascular functioning. Thirty minutes of aerobic activities, three to five
times a week is adequate, but daily would be better. Simply
walking around the neighborhood is not as good as cardio
but anything is better than nothing. If you are able, focus
more on the elliptical or treadmill machines, which will burn
twice as many calories as walking on a level surface. Other
activities such as tennis or swimming are also very good. The
main thing is just to get moving and stay active.
In regards to diet, the low carb diet has been shown to be
more effective for weight loss and maintaining weight loss
when compared to a low fat diet. Our “Rapid Weight Loss”
Program will allow you to lose 10 – 30 pounds per month
depending on how much weight you need to lose. The best
part is that the program is very easy and you eat real food.
There are no requirements for shakes, bars, meal replacements or a liquid diet. You simply eat normal food that you
already eat at home and while out at any restaurant. We tell
you exactly which foods to eat and which ones to avoid and
we also have an online “EZDietPlanner” and “Fitness
Tracker” that will plan your meals, track your carbs and calories and even print a shopping list if you need one.
Our program includes B12/Lipotropic fat burning injections weekly as well as medication to suppress your appetite
and decrease cravings for carbs and sweets. Weekly visits
allow for close monitoring to make sure you are losing safely.
Bioelectric Impedance Testing is performed monthly to

assess body composition so we can tell you exactly how
much fat you are losing each month. This also allows us to
know how many calories you are eating per day and that
you are following the diet correctly. We will know your fluid
balance and whether you are losing or gaining water. We
will also know if you are building muscle. All of this allows
us to know that you are safely losing your weight.
If you want to actually be able to pick and choose where
your fat comes from, then HCG, Mesotherapy and Zerona
Laser are very helpful. HCG injections allow you to mobilize fat from around your waist and belly first. This is usually the last place that most people lose from. Injections are
very simple and are done at home on a daily basis. Along
with the diet and exercise, HCG allows you to lose 3 - 4
inches from around your waist in just 4 weeks. HCG injections can be done alone or in combination with our Rapid
Weight Loss Program. These injections are best used while
still actively losing weight and do not take the place of diet
and exercise but merely allow you to
decide where your fat loss comes from.
Zerona is a low level laser that is
used to literally burn holes in your fat
cells. This causes your fat cells to
become leaky and fat will leak out into
the interstitial space. Your body will
remove the fat with its normal detoxification process. The Zerona laser
passes through your skin and causes
no discomfort at all. Treatments are
very simple and take about forty
minutes each. With Zerona, you can lose
3 - 4 inches in just 2 weeks. The Zerona
package also includes one month on our
Rapid Weight Loss Program. This will
allow you to “focus” where your fat loss
comes from. With Zerona, you can target your thighs and/or
buttocks specifically and guarantee that a good portion of
your fat loss will come from those areas.
Mesotherapy is multiple injections in your fatty areas to
destroy fat cells and melt fat directly. Fat cell death is permanent so results are permanent. Even if you gain weight in
the future, it will not be as noticeable in the Mesotherapytreated areas since you will have fewer fat cells there to
enlarge. Overall, Zerona and Mesotherapy treatments can
give you results similar to liposuction without any surgery
or downtime. They are best used at the end of your weight
loss for the stubborn areas that remain.
So there you have it! Multiple ways to lose pounds and
inches in time for the holidays. Just remember that nothing
works without proper diet and exercise so stay active and
eat in moderation. If you would like to lose 10 – 30 pounds
per month or if you simply want to look and feel your best
by the holidays, just give our office a call at 843-491-4811 to
schedule a free no-obligation consultation.
Don’t forget that we also offer Botox Cosmetic, dermal
fillers such as Restylane and Juvederm as well as light and
laser based treatments to help you get the look you want in
time for your special events.

Doctors and Internet
Reviews
By Jeffrey W. Horowitz, DMD, FAGD
“It has to be true; I read it on the
internet” It may sound silly, but unfortunately health care professionals
world-wide are now facing a new
dilemma in patient care, negative
online reviews. While this topic may
not be exclusive to dentistry, it must be
addressed in that many patients are
unknowingly being led by the internet
to bad healthcare decisions. Even more
worrisome is that some providers have
changed the way they practice to protect their online image.
The impetus for this was a recent personal medical matter
for a family member, which I am willing to share for the sake
of this discussion.
After six months of preparation and diagnostic testing for
a gastric sleeve procedure, my own father was informed by
the surgeon that he would not operate on him solely because
he was over 65. Having no negative cardiovascular or respiratory history, we asked why. It turns out that it was a policy
as statistically the mortality and complication rate was higher amongst patients over 65. Suspicion led me to probing
around until I had the answer I knew was at the heart of this
decision.
Both providers and hospitals must be acutely aware of
their “Health Grades” and online reputation as many
patients will base their health care decisions primarily on
these “ratings”. There are some inherent problems with this
system, particularly in that this may interfere with sound
case-based medical decisions, bypassing what may be best
for an individual patient for a statistically better outcome
rate. Though this is considered to be an elective procedure,
many patients who do not receive the surgery will die prematurely from obesity related conditions, and nearly all will
suffer in their quality of life... My intention is not to argue
for or against this procedure, but to point out that generalized “ratings” have created a culture of protective healthcare
above and beyond what frivolous malpractice suits have
already. In the case of my father, an otherwise healthy man
who can barely walk and suffers with intolerable back pain
secondary to his obesity, was blindly denied a procedure out
of concern for online statistics.
This is fairly new territory and there is no blame to be
placed on the hospitals or providers that are now forced into
these difficult decisions. Likewise, the public cannot be
blamed as they are just seeking out information to help make
medical decisions a bit easier. In this author’s opinion, the
blame belongs in the rush for internet dollars, without clear

regard for
the implications to
patients and
practitioners
alike. While
companies
such as
Health
Grades may
have entered
this space
with good
intention to offer useful information to the public, it can
often be misleading as providing care to older, sicker, and
more desperate populations will undoubtedly lead to lower
ratings.
Good Intentions are not necessarily the case for the vast
array of companies that now use ratings systems as a means
to increase website traffic. Virtually every physician or dentist I have spoken with on this matter has reported being the
victim of anonymous negative rants and ratings that were
potentially damaging to a reputation these professionals
have worked their entire careers to earn. I am no exception.
In one instance, a person who had never been seen in my
office posted poor ratings on Facebook in every single category. So next to the 4’s and 5’s my entire team works to earn,
a solid row of 1’s brought my overall rating down. There
was no history of this individual in our records as a patient,
responsible party or spouse to an existing patient, yet this
unverified source was allowed to alter the perception of the
care we provide. Accountability is never a bad thing, especially in the healing sciences, but as with medical research
both source and method must be considered.
The bottom line is this. Everything read on the internet,
particularly in matters as important as health care, should be
qualified by source, and interpreted with an understanding
of the biases that are inherently built in to the ratings. Don’t
accept information at face value. Share it with a health care
professional you have grown to trust. They may offer some
critical insight to what you are reading. At the same time, a
trusted health care professional can often offer great advice
with regard to helping you make the best possible health
care decisions. I speak for most when I say that positive
improvement of health for our patients far outweighs any
monetary reward in our job satisfaction.

into the bestselling book, An Invisible

Panhandler, a Busy Sales Executive, and
anUnlikely Meeting with Destiny.
When Schroff first met Maurice on a
New York City street corner, she had no idea that she was
standing on the brink of an incredible and unlikely friendship that would inevitably change both their lives. As one
lunch at McDonald’s with Maurice turns into two, then
into a weekly occurrence that is fast growing into an inexplicable connection, she learns heart-wrenching details
about Maurice’s horrific childhood.
Sprinkled throughout is also Schroff ’s own story of her
turbulent childhood. Every now and then, something
about Maurice’s struggles reminds her of her past, how
her father’s alcohol-induced rages shaped the person she

As their friendship grows, Schroff offers Maurice simple
experiences he comes to treasure: learning how to set a

lunches to bring to school.
She now shares this heartwarming story of a friendship
that has spanned 25 years, that brought life to an overscheduled professional who had lost sight of family and

family background in drugs and crime and squalor
seemed an inescapable fate.

Giving Tuesday Is Coming
By Kristi Falk
We’ve all heard of Black Friday
and Cyber Monday, but have you
heard about #GivingTuesday?
What is #GivingTuesday? It is a
movement to celebrate and provide incentives to give. It will culminate with a global day of giving
on December 2nd, 2014. Megan
Reile of 360Alumni, an alumni
engagement network, says that “
#GivingTuesday is a fantastic opportunity for individuals
and corporations to raise non-profit support. Following
Cyber Monday, which is a consumption-driven whirlwind,
#GivingTuesday is a chance to give back to non-profits
worldwide, and remember the true spirit of the holidays.”
The holidays are always a season of giving, so it makes
sense to have at least one day focused on giving back and
giving to those in need.
As the Founder and Executive Director of a small, grassroots organization, I always encourage people to give to
and support organizations with missions that really resonate with them. Choose a non-profit or a cause that you
are truly passionate about. Did you know that supporting
a cause by volunteering your time can improve self-esteem
and combat depression? Studies have also shown that volunteering can also increase your chances of employment.
Donating your time with different groups can teach new
skills and critical thinking, which is important in any field.
Of course, we all know that volunteering and helping others just feels good and feels right. “Help others achieve
their dreams and you will achieve yours, “ asserts Les
Brown.
The Wellness Council for SC is a 501c3, local non-profit
organization that promotes healthy living through education. The main focus is on young children. Recent reports
say that the youth in South Carolina are 2nd in the nation
for obesity. This can lead to Type 2 diabetes and heart disease in children. This can be prevented by encouraging
and teaching healthy habits such as eating vegetables and
getting daily exercise. The Wellness Council’s youth program Green S.P.A.R.K. (Shaping Potential and Reaching
Kids) is doing just that, in an after school setting.
Currently it is in one local middle school with plans for
expansion. Starting healthy habits early can lead to a
healthier, happier and more productive adult. Since these
kids are our future leaders, we want them to be at their
absolute best, especially when it comes to their health.
The Wellness Council for SC relies solely on public and
www.scwomanmagazine.com
private donations as well as volunteers to keep its programs running.
So, this holiday season, enjoy the frenzy. Be brave and
fight the crowds on Black Friday. Shop in your PJ’s on
Cyber Monday. And don’t forget about #GivingTuesday!.
Draw a heart around December 2nd on your calendar and
make that day a family
giving day. Choose your
organization together
and donate your time. If
you can’t volunteer, then
a monetary donation is
always a blessing. Most
importantly, give of your heart. That’s the most important
part.

We all love a daytrip to the spa.
The lavish accommodations are
pleasing to all our senses. The comfort and luxuries of the tranquil
atmosphere eases our tensions and
brings us to a state of calm relaxation. As much as we would all love
to experience this on a daily basis,
there are many factors in our life
that will not allow it. Since this is
the case, here are some ideas of how
to bring the pleasures of the spa
into the comfort of your own home.
Find Your Space
It is important for you to find a space and make it yours.
No matter if it is an entire room or a quiet corner, any size
space will do. You will want to decorate this space with colors
and items that relax you and make you feel at ease. Make
sure you have a comfy spot to sit and relax. Let everyone in
the household know this is your space! Keep it free of clutter
and retreat to this space when the stress and tension begin to
build up. It is amazing how just a couple of minutes to yourself and a few deep breathes can change your temperament.
A good suggestion to consider for your space could be a
lounging hammock in an outdoor area. Protect the area with
a screen enclosure or lanai to eliminate pests from distracting
you during your relaxing time.
Pamper Your Feet
Soothe those soles! There are about 75,000 nerve endings in
your feet. That is a lot of feeling. Take time and show your
tootsies some special attention. A delightful foot scrub will do
the trick. The scrub will exfoliate the skin and leave your feet
feeling pampered and fresh. Not only can you apply and
enjoy it in your home, you can also
make the foot scrub yourself. Just follow these simple steps:
In a blender, grind 4 tablespoons of oatmeal and Add:
4 tablespoons of brown sugar
2 tablespoons of honey
2 tablespoons of lemon juice
2 teaspoons of olive oil
Blend into a paste texture.
www.scwomanmagazine.com
Massage onto feet and rinse off. The oil makes for a slick surface, so be careful. Use on rough patches such as knees and
elbows as well. Enjoy!
Wonders of Hydrotherapy
Hydrotherapy, or water therapy, is the use of water to
relieve discompfort and pain while providing a vast amount
of healthful and relaxing benefits. Hot tubs are an affordable
and convenient way to take advantage of these benefits.
Caldera Spas® offer Pure Comfort, Pure Performance and
Pure Style in every hot tub produced. Contact your local
Caldera Spas® authorized dealer on details of being able to
experience these six wonders of hydrotherapy:
1 Improves circulation
2 Relieve tension on sore muscles and joints
3 Promotes a healthy heart
4 Transitions your body into a restful sleep mode
5 Reduces cellulite
6 Lose weight
These are just a few ideas to help you relax in the comforts
of your own home. Find a space and make it your own tranquil retreat. Outdoor living areas are ideal for relaxation.
Carolina Home Exteriors can assist you in turning your outdoor living dreams into reality. We have served the
Carolinas since 1980 by providing quality custom designed

Life's Balance Wheel
The Best That Can
Happen!
By Donna Tyson
Suddenly Everything
Changes.
When your world is
turned upset down with a
sudden change, what is
your first reaction? Do you
bristle with frustration at
the fact that you have lost
control? Do you look for
someone else to blame? Do
you find yourself in a state
of limbo, unable to move
forward into the
unknown? Does your imagination go
wild with the fear of the worst that
can happen?
The mind is a powerful factor when dealing with extreme stress
or unexpected changes.
If we begin to dwell on
everything that can go
wrong, we will find
ourselves anxious,
paranoid, and overwhelmed with worry.
Often times, we will
subconsciously create
the very outcome we
feared the most and then exclaim with
great frustration “Of course! I knew
it!”
This month I learned another powerful lesson about the power of the
mind in my journey to wellness.
Because of some serious neuropathy
in my hands and a body that was literally crashing, my oncologist decided
to halt my chemotherapy treatment
one month early.
After a thorough review of my
pathology reports, surgical margins,
blood labs and physical exam reports,
she also decided that we should hold
off on the planned radiation treatments as well. This abrupt stop to my
cancer treatment plan threw me into a

tailspin. I immediately began to fear that this aggressive
Triple Negative Cancer would return because I was“quitting too soon” and “not following through with the
detailed battle plan that was going to allow me to beat it”.
I heard the explicit reasons for this change in plans and
knew in my heart that my doctor was right, but my fear of
losing to this cancer was so strong that I could not
embrace the new plan with joy.
When I called my daughter and wept as I bared my
soul, she was shocked at my response. Niki exclaimed
“Mom, don’t you see that this is an answer to our prayers!
No more poison going into your system and no radiation
damaging your lungs and heart. You get to let your body
heal now, Mom. You get to be with the family for the holidays like you wanted and you have several weeks to get
stronger and feel better before Carson and Miho bring
Kailyn (my new four month old granddaughter) from
California to visit you. You didn’t quit, Mom. Your doctor,
the cancer specialist that you tell me you love and trust so
much, made an educated decision that your body has had
enough toxins. You need to celebrate, Mom!”
When I posted a picture on Facebook of me Ringing the
Victory Bell at the chemotherapy office to celebrate that I
had finished my treatment, over 500 friends liked the post
and sent wonderful messages of congratulations. Later
that evening, Lilah and Sammi, my 3 and 5 year old granddaughters, called me singing “Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
Granny rang the bell. Granny is going to get well! Granny
is going to have hair again! Granny can come see us now!”
It seemed as though everyone else could celebrate but
me…I was in a self imposed pit of fear and limbo. I drew
away from everyone for three days and tried to journal
and pray my way through this shadowland.
On Thursday morning as I was watching the sunrise
and journaling, a jogger stopped in front of me and apologized for interrupting my quiet time. She said she saw me
in this spot every morning and asked if I lived here. She
then stated that this was a strange situation for her but she
felt a strong prompting to stop and ask if she could pray
with me. I said yes and she knelt in front of me and
touched my hand while asking if there was anything specific on my heart that I would like her to pray about.
Tears began to fall as I told her I had just been told we
were ending my chemotherapy four weeks early and that I
was overcome with fears of quitting too soon and not
doing enough to beat this cancer. I asked her to pray that
my faith would be strong enough to dissolve these fears so
that I could celebrate the blessing and move forward. I
told her that I knew it really was “the best thing that could
happen”. She prayed a beautiful prayer over me and I felt
the presence of the Holy Spirit.
As I walked home from the beach, I realized that the veil
of sadness and fear had lifted. I was ready to move forward with determination and enthusiasm into this new
chapter of holistic and nutritional healing of my body. I
was ready to celebrate this unexpected blessing in my life.
I am grateful to my daughter for her positive perspective
www.scwomanmagazine.com
and to that angel unaware in my life that prayed with me
that morning. By the way, I had not seen that jogger before
that day or since; it was definitely a divine appointment.
Perhaps you are also facing an unexpected change in
plans that has you weighted down. It may be a change in
jobs, a move to a new location, a divorce or the dissolve of
a relationship, or a sudden loss of income. Perhaps it feels
like you have failed.
I challenge you not to dwell on the worst things that can
happen, but instead to think about the Best that Can
Happen. Think about it, say it aloud, write it down, pray
about it, and claim it! Be sure to recognize it when it manifests itself in your life. Don’t over analyze it – just decide
to walk in faith again. Trust that God loves you and is
looking out for you. He wants the Best for you. Let Him
give it to you. Receive it with gratitude and joy.
It is truly is the Best that Can Happen!

What Does “All-Inclusive”
Vacation Really Mean?
By Anjana Duff, Travel Consultant
The all-inclusive concept of
vacations has become more and
more popular over the last few
years, especially with island
resorts. There is definitely something to be said for paying one
price and then not having to
spend another dime. Sound too
good to be true? Sometimes, it is,
but not always.
1. Is there really such a thing as
an all-inclusive resort?
Yes, there are hundreds of
resorts around the world that bill
themselves as all-inclusive. The
resorts vary in size and range from 2 1/2 star to 5 + star just
as in regular hotels. The higher the star rating, the finer the
food, service and quality of amenities.
Generally the all-inclusive price includes the room; all
meals- breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks; alcohol, entertainment
and activities at the resort; non-motorized water sports;
roundtrip transfers from the airport, and gratuities.
2. What is NOT included?
Golf, spa, motorized water sports such as jet skis (although
the more upscale resorts do offer those); premium brands of

liquor; excursions off the resort.
3. Is there anything to do off of the resort?
While you could certainly be content staying on the resort
and enjoying all its benefits, it is understandable that you
would want to get out and explore the local culture. Most
resorts have free shuttles into town or cab service. How much
there is to explore depends on where your resort is. If you
choose a resort in more populated areas such as Mexico, there
are big towns and other attractions close by. Smaller islands
will not have as much to explore and might be a choice for a
more romantic trip. Choose wisely.
4. How is the food? Is there enough variety for everyone
in the family?
The food quality will vary from average to gourmet
depending on the level of resort. All resorts have several different restaurants and bars which cover the gamut of food
choices from buffet chicken nuggets to fine dining options of
steaks and seafood. Some of the lower end resorts will have
fine dining options for an additional charge.
5. Do I really NOT have to tip?
Gratuities are included in the price, so, you really do not
have to tip anyone. However, if you’ve had exceptional service from your housekeeper or favorite server, you are certainly welcome to give them something extra. It will be appreciated – but not expected.
All- inclusive resorts are a wonderful vacation option and
can include most, if not all, of the things you will want on
your trip.
However,
all resorts
are not created equal.
It is very
important
to do your
research or
to discuss

Simple
Secrets for
Selling
Your Home
Faster
By Kimberly Dahlin
Selling secret #1: A
beautiful home is
a sellable home.
Add minimal
color, flowers, and
lamps to light up
the home. Buyers
need to see the
structure, not your
décor.
Selling secret #2:
Take the home out
of your house.
Remove personal photos, keepsakes and
themes from the house. Allow the buyer to
visualize his/her personal items in your
home. Keep it warm & inviting, but not cluttered.
Selling secret #3: The kitchen can make or
break a sale.
Consider updating the kitchen before
putting the home on the market. Add neutral-colored paint and new hardware to
dated cabinets. Empty counter tops of appliances and dishes. Freshen the kitchen with
scented cleaner or a nice lightly scented candle.
Selling secret #4: Enhance the closet space.
Showcase your closets by taking half of
your belongings out of the closets, then neatly organizing what remains.
Selling secret #5: Homes do sell during the
holidays.
Your home is never more beautifully decorated than during the winter holidays. It’s a
great time to show off your home to buyers!
