CCC Golf Incorporated, a California corporation, doing business as Crystalaire Country Club Newsletter November 2014 Email us from our Website: www.CrystalaireCC.com PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE LLANO, CA 93544 GOLF SHOP NEWS While I am always thankful to all of you, November is a traditional reminder that grounds me like a two-iron in the rough. November is humbling to me, as a reminder that you never know how many rounds of golf you will get in before sunset. I am thankful to all our members for being members and especially those board members and others who voluntarily give their time to make our events memorable. I am thankful for all those past members I have shared a snicker, a shank, a hug or a tear with. I am thankful to all the staff who work extremely hard to make your experience as royal and memorable as possible. I am thankful for Coach teaching that Gecko to line dance in the latest commercial—look at it closely, you can tell. And finally, I am thankful to my family and for all those friends that participate with Karon, always keeping her busy whether playing bridge, golf, bunco, trips, CHLA or yoga—thank you, it gives me a moment to see my analyst. Making Memories, Share It With A Friend! Is Hpnotiq really your drink, oh captain, oh captain? Go Team CCC! Rewards for 2015 begin with you signing up in January! John Blalock by Alan Arvesen, PGA Head Professional The word “virtual” has been listed in the USGA Rules of Golf on numerous occasions and it usually refers to the status of your golf ball. For example, are you virtually certain that your ball is lost in a water hazard? Or, are you virtually certain that your golf ball went down that burrowing animal hole and is not identifiable? Well, here at Crystalaire, “virtual” also imparts knowledge on the golf course in the way of the “Virtual Rope” system. Although there are no actual ropes, white stakes with green tips now give YOU the knowledge that it is recommended that carts be kept out of these “virtual” areas. See the description below and I am “virtually certain” that if you follow these guidelines, the golf course will remain in “virtual” perfect condition: The VIRTUAL ROPE SYSTEM is marked with White Stakes with Green Tips (mostly around Greens and Tees). Carts are NOT permitted beyond these marked areas. The only exception is for carts with a handicap flag on it. Crystalaire Country Club invites you to our Thanksgiving Buffet Thursday, November 27, 2014 between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Succulent Slow Roasted Turkey Honey Mustard Glazed Ham Herbed-Crusted Snapper Fillets Vegetable Du Jour Traditional Herb Bread Stuffing Fresh Whipped Potatoes with Pan Gravy Pumpkin Bread with Butter Assorted Pies with Whipped Cream Bring Family & Friends and Treat Yourself to a Relaxing Day! Call for Reservations (661) 944-2112 2015 PRIVATE CART STICKERS AVAILABLE The end of the year is approaching fast and there are approximately 30 private cart owners who have not gotten their 2015 Private Cart sticker. Make an appointment with Balta to have your cart inspected. Also make sure that the Business Office has an up-to-date copy of your cart insurance on file. Don’t wait until the last minute, get your 2015 sticker today! IS YOUR GAME “WINTERIZED”? Right when everyone just “perfected” their summer tans, all of a sudden, cool weather sets in and it’s time to break out the sweaters and jackets. All you private cart owners, time to put on the cart cover. If yours is in bad shape and you need a new one, see Balta so that he can get it ordered for you. The new Golf Shop fall and winter wear is coming in, so come on by and check out the latest in fashions. As we head into the winter months, a couple of quick reminders, we could get frost and frozen greens and maybe even some snow. The Course Superintendent will make the FINAL call as to when the course will open and I hope everyone will respect that decision and not take it upon themselves to go on the greens until they are ready for play. Any damage done to the course now will show up in the spring. The course is in great shape. If everyone would do their part, it will remain in great shape come spring. Have a great Thanksgiving with family and friends. In the meantime…. GOOD GOLFING! Crystalaire Country Club BITS ‘N’ PIECES ACES, ACES, ACES, ACES With one “mighty” swing of the club, Mike Damiano broke a 4-month “ace” drought at Crystalaire, as he recorded the first Hole-In-One at CCC since June. Mike, playing with Carol MacDonald, used a 7-iron to ace the 152-yard, 8th hole for his first ever “ace” at Crystalaire, and his second lifetime Hole-in -One. Now that the “drought” is over, are you protected? For information on joining either the men’s or ladies’ Hole-In -One Clubs, contact one of the Golf Shop staff for assistance. Crystalaire Men’s Club from the Men’s Club President, Kevin Shankel Congratulations to Bill Blakely for becoming the 2014 SHOOT OUT Champion! I happened to witness (up close and personal) the many, many, many….many array of shots that he would employ during the Shootout in his round prior to the Shootout Final. Thanks for a Great Day, Bill. Thank you to everyone for your participation in all events, shootouts and tournaments this past year. We hope that the formats used will continue to draw participation from all levels of players. On behalf of the Crystalaire Men’s Club, we hope the holidays treat you and your families well. No matter what religion, belief or spiritual background one has, always remember…. Do right―because it is the right thing to do….. The next Men’s Club Meeting will be held on Sunday, November 2, at 7:30 a.m. BY DONNA ARVESEN Can you believe that Thanksgiving is just around the corner? Where does the time go? I guess when you are having fun and enjoying life like we do at Crystalaire, there is no time to be bored or watch the clock. C l u b Speaking of fun, that is exactly what the CCC Halloween Dinner/Dance was. The costumes were once again spectacular. Alan and I enjoyed being skeleton people but will remember, no facemasks ever again! I forgot how stifling they are. Our costume winners for last year for best couple were Paul and Bonnie Deardorff. They did it again this year with a whole new look as the Munsters. The best lady was Janice Strech as Cruella DeVille, cigarette holder and all. The best man award went to Alan Strech as a clown. The most original went to Charlotte and Ron David as pregnant “sisters”. Al Fude won an honorable mention as our DJ for the evening in a classy suit covered in pumpkins. And by the way, he did a great job providing us with dance music all night long. N e w Elaine Kennedy tells me that she and Ken had a great vacation in August two weeks in Lake Tahoe. While there, they visited with former s spending members Chet and Kay Calderia, who are very happy living in their cabin in the woods. The Kennedys also went over to Reno for the Hot August Nights car event, where their friend won a trophy from the Ford Motor Company for his pristine ‘67 Mustang convertible. Our wishes for a return to better health go out to Kenny Kosik who has been ill for several months and recently hospitalized. Also on the get well list is Val Crouch who took a tumble, fractured her hip but is now recuperating in the hospital. Consolations winners: Mo Markese and Kathy May. My Co-Chair Betty Pfahler and I, would like to thank all the ladies who participated in this tournament and played to the best of their ability. In our book, you are all winners by just signing up. November is proving to be just as much fun with the Eclectic Tournament, which should be under way by now. Can’t wait to see who the winner will be this year. And getting into the spirit of the holidays, please sign up for the Christmas Tournament on December 4. The organizers of this 9-hole event, which also includes a luncheon, plan on making it very special for all and are working hard to support a local charity. Please come out and enjoy the day with friends knowing that you are also supporting others in need during this special time of the year. Happy Thanksgiving, Barb Dettloff Halloween “Monster” Tournament October 25 Larry Hackney proved why he is a perennial winner in CCC Men’s events, as he rose to the occasion to capture the top gross honors in the annual Halloween “Monster” Tournament. His score of 79 was one of the lowest in this event in recent years. Tracy Oswell was the low net winner with a 79, while Gary Little was second with an 86 and Bill Castle third with an 88. Dennis Bernstein was the Closest to the Pumpkin winner on Hole #5 along with Janice Strech, while Tracy Oswell won the Closest to the Pin on Hole #11. For the ladies, Janice Strech won the gross competition with a 117, while Pauline Hudson captured the net with a 91. There were 80 players at this year’s event and all were treated to a beautiful day of golf and food at Crystalaire. In the scramble competition, the team of Bob Colman, Johnny Blalock, Chris Baingo and Craig Baingo took the top gross prize with a score of 58. CCC members Allen Fude and John Blalock were on the second place net team with a score of 54.3. Special thanks to all the volunteers of the Antelope Valley Guild for their tireless efforts in making this event not only one of the longest running events in the High Desert, but a huge success as well. UPCOMING TOURNAMENTS Skins Final October 11 After 12 months of competitions, 21 men took to the course for the Skins final and when the dust settled, seven skins were awarded. Bob Wagenaar won two skins while Jim Stead, Bill Reagan, Bill Miller, Mike Coblentz and Alan Strech each won one skin. A new season starts in November and there will be two skins competitions per month with the final again being contested in October of 2015. Shootout Finals October 18 Bill “shifty” Blakely is your new Shootout Champion for 2014. After six months of qualifying, it came down to 10 men in the finals. Blakely edged out perennial contender Kevin Shankel on the final green, while Tim Geariety was the third place finisher. Thanks to all the participants of the 13 Shootouts during these past six months and to Bill Gingery for running a good, clean Finals. For all you new members, try a Shootout in 2015. They are a lot of fun, good competition and well worth the couple of hours on the course. If we missed anyone, our apologies.
