The LiteHouse…Think Pink and Save Some Green
Why consider the LiteHouse?
The LiteHouse is designed to maintain a 1-hour fire rating in ceilings where recessed light fixtures are
installed. It protects against the spread of heat and flames into the ceiling cavity and provides additional
time for occupants to evacuate the building in the event of a fire.
The LiteHouse is classified by the nationally recognized leader in consumer safety: Underwriters
Laboratories (UL File No. R25083). This classification provides a 1-hour fire rating for any L500 series
wood joist or wood parallel cord truss with gypsum wallboard membrane floor/ceiling assemblies
when used in conjunction with any UL Listed incandescent or compact fluorescent light fixture with a
maximum opening diameter of 6-13/16”.
The LiteHouse is a unique fire rated enclosure system constructed using fire-resistant gypsum
wallboard which forms a five sided air tight enclosure.
The LiteHouse also meets the fire protection codes of the 2000, 2003 and 2006 International Building
Code (IBC), International Residential Code (IRC) and the energy efficiency mandates of the 2003 and
2006 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC), governing the installation of recessed lighting
fixture in ceilings adjacent to unconditioned space. By protecting the thermal envelope, the LiteHouse
closed the gap created by the light fixture by reducing air flow and energy loss.
Where is the LiteHouse Used?
The LiteHouse can be used in any non fire-rated construction type and fire-rated construction types
that meets the UL Classification for L500 floor / ceiling assemblies where a 1-hour fire rating is required.
Essentially, any floor / ceiling assembly made of wood joists or wood trusses with a gypsum wallboard
ceiling membrane qualifies.
Construction types include:
Single and Multi-Family Dwellings: Apartments, Condominiums, Duplex Residences, Fraternities,
Dormitories, Assisted Living Facilities, Institutional Facilities, Multi-Level homes, Garages with living
spaces above, residences with light fixtures placed in ceilings adjacent to unconditioned attic spaces.
Hospitality and Commercial: Hotels, Motels, Restaurants, Night Clubs, Retail Stores, etc.
LiteHouse Features
Designed specifically to fit in most standard types of construction, the LiteHouse provides more
flexibility than other air-tight products by offering multiple options for 16” on-center, wood and wood
truss construction solutions.
The standard UL Classified size is I.D. 12 1/2"W x 15"L x 7 3/4" H. Restricted or obstructed ceiling space
is not an issue. The LiteHouse is designed to fit in 2” x 10” joists and can be placed anywhere within the
joist cavity. In non fire-rated applications, custom sizes are available for installation in ceilings where
the ceiling cavity is as shallow as 2” x 6” construction or where other obstructions may cause height or
width restrictions.
Easy to Install
Comparable in weight to other fire rated or air-tight recessed light fixture enclosures, the LiteHouse is
simple and easy to install:
Construction Installation Method:

Fig. 2
Fig. 3
Mechanically fasten the support flange directly to the bottom of the joist (See Fig. 1).
Install the recessed fixture to the interior flange tab (See Fig. 2).
Create a maximum 5/8” diameter opening in the side wall of the enclosure and pass electrical conduit
and wiring through (See Fig. 2).
Install Drywall Ceiling and cut opening for light fixture trim kit (See Fig. 3).
LiteHouse Savings
Traditionally, gypsum wallboard enclosures are built on-site around recessed fixtures. There is no
standard for the construction of field fabricated enclosures and the requirements of the local code
official vary widely. Installing the LiteHouse not only reduces costly construction delays due to callbacks, but can save up to 50% over field fabricated enclosures.
The LiteHouse is the only off-site-produced alternative to the field fabricated gypsum wallboard
enclosure. The LiteHouse provides peace of mind to the Code Official and a quick completion of the
job by the contractor. Any tradesman can install this pre-assembled enclosure thereby eliminating
additional manpower, additional expense and scheduling nightmares with one convenient solution.
LiteHouse Classification
With its distinctive pink color, the LiteHouse serves as an easily recognizable indicator for code officials
and building inspectors that a UL Classified 1-hour fire rated product is installed and the knowledge
that it is a quality product developed by Innovative Drywall Solutions. Additional information can be
obtained from the UL label placed on the enclosure or by visiting the UL website www.ul.com on the
UL Certification Directory page under the UL Category Code CDHW.
LiteHouse Flexibility
The LiteHouse is compatible with any UL listed incandescent or compact fluorescent light fixture
providing you and your customers with literally hundreds of lighting solution options.
The LiteHouse-AT offers non-fire rated air-tight fixture enclosures meeting IECC energy code
requirements. The QuietLite and SoundHouse systems offer non-fire rated acoustical recessed light
fixture and recessed audio speaker enclosures designed to dramatically reduce sound transmission
through the ceiling to the floor above. Safe and quiet …a nice combination.
