Meet District Alumni Coordinator Meagan O’Donnell
I am continually amazed at how many alumni have
remained in, or return to the district for the start of their
post-graduation lives. It is a goal of the district to make
meaningful connections with alumni and what a pleasure for
me to be coordinating these efforts. As a 2004 graduate of
Oak Park who lives in the district, I know the sense of pride
that comes from our schools, and I’m wholeheartedly excited
to connect with as many alumni as possible.
Through conversations I have had with alumni, teachers,
administrators and other staff, I have come to learn that
our alumni are searching for ways to reconnect. I’ve heard,
“I’m an alum, what can I do?” more than just a few times.
Alumni want to be involved, and we want to afford them the
opportunity.
Starting this year, North Kansas City Schools will introduce organized ways for our
alumni – both graduated students and retired staff – to stay connected, or reconnect with
their schools and the district.
We are developing a portion of the district website as the hub for all alumni
information. You will find reunion listings, alumni events, school Halls of Fame information
and ways to give back to your schools. It is in the early stages of development, but I hope it
will be helpful, informative and entertaining for all alumni.
And, we want to know where our alumni are and what you are doing. Please register
at www.nkcschools.org/alumni, so we can share alumni news, as well as have the ability to
reconnect you with your classmates.
I am here to serve as the connection between our alumni and their alma maters. Let me
know what ideas you have for our alumni efforts and activities. Whether you bleed purple,
blue, red or green, I look forward to hearing from you!

Dreaming Big to Achieve Our Goals
A Message from Dr. Todd E. White, Superintendent
It is important to dream – and to Dream Big. North
Kansas City Schools students, teachers and staff are
encouraged to set the bar high, and last year, we set some
pretty lofty goals for ourselves. It is with great pride that I
am able to announce that our hard work paid off, and we
have cause for celebration as we begin a new school year.
By dreaming big, students were challenged to achieve
at higher levels, and our performance on the state’s annual
assessment was incredible. We made great strides on our
journey to academic success for all students.
While we celebrate a successful year, it is important to
remember that great things are happening in our schools
on a daily basis. The assessment numbers are a reflection
of the extraordinary accomplishments of our students and
teachers. As we launch a new school year with a new set
75028170
of goals, I encourage you
to help us highlight the
wonderful things happening
in North Kansas City
Schools. Take pride in your
schools and the people who
work tirelessly to inspire
students to achieve their
potential by engaging them
in experiences they will
remember for a lifetime.
We Dream Big in North Kansas City Schools and know
the sky is the limit for our students as they achieve even
more than they ever imagined.

Oak Park Brings Home 50th Homecoming
Summer Reading
Four Teachers Author Book
to Help Families Prepare
for Kindergarten
What does it take to be ready for kindergarten?
Four teachers in North Kansas City Schools believe they
know the answer and have authored the book “I’m Ready
for Kindergarten” to help youngsters get an early start on
numbers, letters, colors, shapes and words.
The four include Jill Evert, a teaching and learning
coach at Crestview and Topping; Athena Graham, a 5th
grade teacher at Clardy; Shelly Sanders, new assistant
principal at Gracemor, and former teaching and learning
coach; and Kali Young, a former social studies teacher
at North Kansas City High School. Young created illustrations for the book.
The women developed the kindergarten book as a
project for the Superintendent’s Leadership Institute, a
yearlong internship program that provides district educators an opportunity to develop leadership skills for a
successful career in school administration.
All district kindergarten students received a copy
of the book, which was published by the NKC Schools
Education Foundation.
From left are Athena Graham, Kali Young and Jill Evert
standing with K2K students from Gashland Elementary.
After 49 years of playing homecoming games at the
shared District Football Stadium in North Kansas City, the
Oak Park Northmen will bring their 50th homecoming
game to home turf, and they couldn’t be happier. The
afternoon game against the Belton Pirates begins at noon
Saturday, Sept. 20.
If there is any home field advantage, Principal Mark
Maus says it is for the many alumni expected to return not
only for the game, but also for the many activities being
planned before, during and after the game.
Celebrations begin Friday, Sept. 19, starting with an
afternoon assembly, followed by a pep rally and parade.
Books on Buses
Books on Buses is growing! The special literacy
program, sponsored by NKC Schools Transportation
Department, extends learning time by making books
accessible to students on their afternoon bus ride
home.
Thousands of books at all K-12 reading levels
already have been donated. The books, kept in plastic
bins, are tucked on each bus, where drivers encourage
students to take books to read. Books may be taken
home to keep or brought back to exchange for a different book.
Doug Ward, Transportation school liaison coordinator, said bus drivers and Transportation staff hope
the traveling library will enhance classroom teachers’
efforts in raising student literacy levels.
To donate books or to learn more about the Books
on Buses program, reach Ward by phone at 413-5200
or email him at [email protected].

Summertime
Pleasures in the
Pages of a Book
Ask elementary students in
North Kansas City Schools what
they did this summer, and chances
are they’ll tell you they read a
good book. For those at Topping
Elementary, good books also came
to them, thanks to an Education
Foundation grant.
For a second consecutive
summer, Topping Principal
Dana Miller, Ed.D., transformed
her personal vehicle into a
bookmobile. She and nearly 50
volunteers traveled to three school
neighborhoods over five weeks,
bringing new books to students.
Each student received a free book
to take home and had the option of
buying additional books for $1.
On-the-spot reading assessments
helped volunteers find just
the right reading level for the
student. Then students chose a
favorite book among the many
boxes Miller brought along.
Parents guided their children in
tracking reading progress, and by
maintaining or increasing reading
levels, students earned an extra
bonus – the chance to “dip” their
principal into a dunk-tank this fall.
Miller said that was fine with
her. With the intended goal of
improving reading skills over
the summer, that was the only
“dipping” she expected her
students to do.
A powder puff football game between junior and senior
girls begins at 4 p.m., and an alumni scrimmage is
expected to follow.
On Saturday, Sept. 20, gates open at 9 a.m. for tailgating.
A visit to the alumni tent or tours taken with former staff
and students are all part of the early pregame activities.
Maus promises a fun-filled day for school families and
alumni alike.
“Oak Park has a long tradition of alumni involvement,”
said Maus. “They come back to us as teachers and support
staff, or as proud parents and grandparents of new
generations of Northmen. Whether close
to home or far away, we want grads to
see just how great Oak Park High School
continues to be after 50 years. We hope
they will share this historic moment with
us.”
Activities Director Casey Vokolek,
who along with Maus has worked hard to
arrange the many logistics surrounding
the 50th homecoming game, is a graduate
from the Class of 1999. He agreed,
saying, “Once you are part of Oak Park,
you are always part of Oak Park.”
As the September date draws closer,
Oak Park will post additional details
about the 50th homecoming celebration
on the high school website at
www.nkcschools.org/oakpark
or follow Principal Maus on Twitter:

Oak Park: Blue on Blue,
Through and Through.
When plans were on the drawing board for Oak Park High School, faculty members had a voice in the design. Their input
added many features, such as lights instead of bells to signal the start and end of classes. The new school had a theater in
the round, bookstore and four outdoor courtyards. As described in the 1966 Cambia yearbook, Oak Park was surrounded by
“vacant land”. As Oak Park begins its 50th anniversary celebration of its first graduates, the land around the high school is far
from empty! Instead today’s Oak Park High School is surrounded by well-established neighborhoods, a vibrant commercial
corridor, a city park and a tradition of Blue on Blue,Through and Through.
The school’s original
principal, Dr. Dan Kahler, was
lured away from Lawrence
High School in Kansas to
open Oak Park. Kahler – or
DK as staff and students alike
called him – said he never
regretted coming to Oak Park.
He remembers that first year
as joyously busy. Kahler
remained the principal at
Oak Park for 21 years before
retiring.
Sports got off to a winning start as Oak Park’s football team went 4-3-2 in its first year. That helped student morale,
Dr. Kahler said, as he recalled a scene from the first football game between Oak Park and Northtown.
“We had 500 girls in the Oak Park Pep Club, blue on blue, on our side. Northtown had 500 girls in purple and gold
on their side,” he said. “What a picture it made!”
Past and current Oak Park principals include:
• Dan Kahler (1965-1986)
• Robert West (1986-1994)
• Benny Cain (1994-2000)
• John Krueger (2000-2006)
• Fred Skretta (2006-2011)
• Joe Hesmann (2011-2013)
• Mark Maus (2013-Current)
“Oak Park was built in the open-classroom concept
where we had big rooms for large groups of people,” said
Benny Cain, one of Oak Park’s former principals. “The
concept was a school within a school. While most students
went to class in the outer perimeter of the building,
the mini-school was on the inside. It was more of an
individualized opportunity for students to get help with
their subjects.”
The Northmen’s Log
newspaper has played an
important part in promoting
school spirit since the very
first year of Oak Park’s
existence. The Log covered a
growing amount of activities
including first-rate student
performances in music and
theater, and winning sports
and academic programs.

One staple of school life is lunch. Students scrambled
through the lunch line when Oak Park opened, much
as they do today. The cafeteria looks different now, but
lunchtime is still very much a part of student life.
Oak-Tonka?
When the first class graduated from Oak Park High
School, the ceremony took place in the school gymnasium
and was televised to the school theaters. There were 483
students in the first graduating class. Fast-forward 50
years, and Oak Park now hosts its graduation ceremonies
at Municipal Auditorium in downtown Kansas City. Nearly
25,000 seniors have graced the halls of Oak Park since the
school opened.
Just as Oak Park sprang from an overcrowded North Kansas
City High School, further enrollment increases gave rise to
Winnetonka High School as the 1970s began. Winnetonka was
actually supposed to open in the fall of 1970, but construction
delays forced some 600 Winnetonka-bound students to attend
school in split shifts at Oak Park for six months. Oak Park students
came for class at 6:30 a.m. and left at 12:30 p.m. The Winnetonka
shift started 10 minutes later and lasted until 6:30 p.m. Activities
were held at night, making it a long day for Oak Park students
and staff members who rose before dawn for their morning
school shift.

Phase I Bond Projects Completed,
Fall Work Now Commences
Several projects that were part of the April bond issue were completed
over the summer.
First on this summer’s list were security fences around school
playgrounds and security key locks replaced on interior and exterior
doors. Computer labs were converted to classroom space, new casework
and roofing were installed, and extensive plumbing work took place at
Gashland Elementary. Rounding out the summer list were upgrades at the
four high schools, including a new practice field at Winnetonka, a new
track at North Kansas City, and new tennis courts at Oak Park and Staley.
Summer projects absorbed $4.2 million worth of work between June and
September.
In addition to bond projects, the district is replacing the roof at Oak

First-Time Teachers Receive
$100 Mini-Grants
Sixty teachers new to the profession did some backto-school shopping compliments of the North Kansas
City Schools Education Foundation. The $100 First-Time
Teacher Mini-Grants helped them purchase items for their
students or their classrooms.
Teachers who are just starting their careers may not
have extra cash for school-related purchases. It’s not
unusual for them to spend several hundred dollars from
their own pockets to buy things that welcome student
back to school, brighten their classrooms and enhance
their lessons.
Funding for the First-Time Teacher Mini-Grants comes
from the Education Foundation’s Dr. Dan Kahler Teaching

Oak Park High School principal. In addition to the minigrants, the Kahler Fund supports an annual grants
