SENOV14/2 thewinesociety.com/societywines The wines in this offer have been specially selected – and, in some cases blended specifically – for one of our two ranges of Society-labelled wines. Society wines are at the heart of The Wine Society. They are the wines which members buy and re-buy most often, and the wines which the buyers spend most time sourcing and often blending to ensure they are the best examples of their type, providing great value for money and benchmark quality. The Exhibition range represents the jewel in the crown of Society-label wines. They are the flagship wines upon which we readily stake our reputation. These are produced for us by some of the finest growers in some of the most prestigious winegrowing regions in the world. Usually they are sourced from a closely defined geographical area, sometimes even a single vineyard, where a grape variety or blend is particularly suited to the climate, topography and soil. The single most important ingredient behind any good wine is the person who makes it. Society and Exhibition wines are sourced to our specifications from people who have a track record of providing excellent bottles. Whether looking to stock up for the rush of Christmas wellwishers, or simply in need of some good-value wines to provide seasonal drinking pleasure, The Society range has a wine for all. If you are looking for some special bottles this Christmas, you may rest assured that the Exhibition range will provide. Having launched the wine successfully with the 2010 vintage, we are delighted that the 2011 has proven a worthy successor. The wine, despite its relative youth, is already a delight, with fine tannins and a long, savoury finish. The gamay grape rules on the granite slopes of Beaujolais, and our Villages wine is a benchmark example of the sappy, round, thoroughly drinkable style, while the Fleurie and Brouilly show the heights the grape can reach in the right hands and given the right conditions. Heading north from Beaujolais you reach the Mâconnais, home to our Society’s White Burgundy and new Exhibition Pouilly-Fuissé. These wines show the chardonnay grape’s great versatility: the White Burgundy – blended each year by our buyers – is unoaked but still ripe, round and food friendly; the Pouilly-Fuissé on the other hand is fermented and matured in oak barrels until it is rich and generous with balancing freshness and grip. Saint-Aubin lies in a cool valley behind Le Montrachet in the Côte d’Or making attractive, appley, Puligny-Montrachet-like wines, but at a more accessible price. REDS The Society’s Beaujolais-Villages Sappy, round with an abundance of fruit and flavour, this is a benchmark Beaujolais. A real crowd-pleaser: perfect for parties and buffet-type meals. ‘The best value Beaujolais in Britain’ wrote The Mail on Sunday’s Olly Smith. We’re not going to argue. 12.5% ref SE-BJ4601 £7.50 bottle £90 dozen The Society’s Exhibition Fleurie 2013 Fleurie was wonderful in 2013. The Exhibition blend merges wines from three top estates including an element from the famed slope of aptly named Grille Midi. This is absolute textbook Fleurie: fragrant, sensuous, abundantly fruity with hints of strawberry and lots of charm. The perfect bottle for pâté, terrines and leftover cold meats. Now to 2017. 13% ref SE-BJ6031 £9.50 bottle £114 dozen The Society’s Exhibition Saint-Aubin Blanc 2012 Domaine Henri Prudhon Saint-Aubin is an excellent source of good-value white Burgundy. This is 100% barrel fermented then aged for a year in oak barrels. A blend of three wines, 62% from Pouilly and 38% from Fuissé, it is rich and generous, but with enough grip and freshness to support the ripe fruit. A wonderful match for scallops. With decades of highly successful en primeur offers under his belt, Marcel Orford-Williams is well placed to find us the best sleek, savoury syrahs from the continental northern Rhône, and ample, spicy grenache-driven blends from the Mediterranean south. In something of a coup, he has also persuaded Jean-Louis Chave, one of the north’s greatest growers, to bottle his brilliant white Hermitage under our Exhibition label. It’s a remarkable wine from a great vintage and an iconic grower. It’s also Marcel’s job to capture for The Society the essence of the lesser-known southern French regions, such as the Corbières and Roussillon, and points north and west too. To qualify for the Society label, they have to be good and true examples of the unpretentious country wines that make informal drinking so enjoyable. REDS The Society’s French Full Red, Côtes Catalanes Quite rightly one of the most popular wines in our entire range. It comes from sunkissed Roussillon and is a blend of very ripe grenache, carignan and a little syrah. It is full-flavoured, fruity and round, and ideal for everyday drinking. 14% ref SE-FC371 £5.95 bottle £71 dozen The Society’s Côtes-du-Rhône A good Côtes-du-Rhône is an essential requirement for any wine rack. All the elements come from well-known growers, blended by Nicolas and bottled by the Perrins. The result is a fragrant, full and refined syrah, with blackberry fruit and a hint of peppery spice. A benchmark Crozes-Hermitage. Now to 2016. 13% ref SE-RH37161 £12.95 bottle £155 dozen WHITES The Society’s French Dry White Vivacious pale-lemon colour, with floral notes and and white fruit on the nose, this southern French white has a lovely round flavour and fresh, clean finish. Riesling is the noblest of them all and here we feature a racy, light-as-a-breeze off-dry German example and a food-friendly dry, full-flavoured Alsatian. Alsace gewurztraminer is second to none and we think our lychee-scented Exhibition bottling is at the top of the pile. The Society’s Vin d’Alsace Clean, round and full-flavoured, this is a blend of sylvaner, riesling, gewurztraminer and pinot gris, with a touch of muscat. Outstanding value for money, this makes an excellent house white. 12.5% ref SE-AL49161 £8.50 bottle £102 dozen The Society’s Saar Riesling Refined, racy and tasting drier than the sweetness code implies, this is wow-factor German riesling. We select and blend this wine with von Kesselstatt, which has an almost unrivalled clutch of top-quality vineyards to choose from. The alcohol of just 9.5% is refreshingly low making it perfect to drink on its own, although the soft, slightly sweet fruit means it will also match a variety of dishes – from salty gammon to a Thai stir fry. 9.5% ref SE-GE4931 £9.50 bottle £114 dozen LOIRE Nowhere does fresh, crisp elegant whites quite like the Loire Valley. Here are two such wines, one youthful, the other demonstrating what extra time in cask and bottle can do. The southern red is a welcome burst of Mediterranean sunshine while the whites – classic spritzy vinho verde and mouthwatering Galician albariño – reflect the fruits of the cooler, wetter Atlanticinfluenced north-west coast. REDS The Society’s Southern Spanish Red Made for us by Bodegas Juan Gil not far from Jumilla, this is a juicy, supple red with a delightful touch of peppery spice. A great all-rounder. 13.5% ref SE-SP7881 £5.50 bottle £66 dozen The Society’s Rioja Crianza Rioja is Spain’s foremost wine region: this crianza, a quality designation meaning it has been aged for at least 12 months in barricas (225-litre oak barrels) before bottling, is a typical example. It is produced by Bodegas Palacio in the heart of Rioja Alavesa at Laguardia. The long ageing, coupled with regular racking, encourages the beneficial contact with oxygen: this results in a brick-red colour with a smooth, subtle palate. Good old-fashioned Rioja: savoury red-fruit, harmonious and delicately structured. Italian whites offer a wealth of flavours and character to explore too. Our single-vineyard pinot grigio is the real McCoy with bright fruit and charm, and the effortless citric fruit and discreet complexity of the Gavi make it a great buy.
