thewinesociety.com/societywines
The wines in this offer have been specially selected – and, in
some cases blended specifically – for one of our two ranges
of Society-labelled wines.
Society wines are at the heart of The Wine Society. They are
the wines which members buy and re-buy most often, and the
wines which the buyers spend most time sourcing and often
blending to ensure they are the best examples of their type,
providing great value for money and benchmark quality.
The Exhibition range represents the jewel in the crown of
Society-label wines. They are the flagship wines upon which we
readily stake our reputation. These are produced for us by some
of the finest growers in some of the most prestigious winegrowing regions in the world. Usually they are sourced from
a closely defined geographical area, sometimes even a single
vineyard, where a grape variety or blend is particularly suited
to the climate, topography and soil.
The single most important ingredient behind any good wine is
the person who makes it. Society and Exhibition wines are
sourced to our specifications from people who have a track
record of providing excellent bottles.
Whether looking to stock up for the rush of Christmas wellwishers, or simply in need of some good-value wines to provide
seasonal drinking pleasure, The Society range has a wine for all.
If you are looking for some special bottles this Christmas, you
may rest assured that the Exhibition range will provide.

BURGUNDY & BEAUJOLAIS
While blends are the order of the day in Bordeaux, single varieties are king in Beaujolais and Burgundy. The gamay grape rules on the granite
slopes of Beaujolais, and our Villages wine is a benchmark example of the sappy, round, thoroughly drinkable style, while the Fleurie and
Brouilly show the heights the grape can reach in the right hands and given the right conditions. Heading north from Beaujolais you reach the
Mâconnais, home to our Society’s White Burgundy and new Exhibition Pouilly-Fuissé. These wines show the chardonnay grape’s great
versatility: the White Burgundy – blended each year by our buyers – is unoaked but still ripe, round and food friendly; the Pouilly-Fuissé on
the other hand is fermented and matured in oak barrels until it is rich and generous with balancing freshness and grip. Saint-Aubin lies in a
cool valley behind Le Montrachet in the Côte d’Or making attractive, appley, Puligny-Montrachet-like wines, but at a more accessible price.

Fleurie was wonderful in 2013. The Exhibition blend merges wines

THE RHONE & THE SOUTH OF FRANCE
With a welter of appellations, numerous small enterprises and notoriously variable quality, knowing the lie of the land and a thorough grounding
in the art of blending are all-important skills in southern France. With decades of highly successful en primeur offers under his belt, Marcel
Orford-Williams is well placed to find us the best sleek, savoury syrahs from the continental northern Rhône, and ample, spicy grenache-driven
blends from the Mediterranean south. In something of a coup, he has also persuaded Jean-Louis Chave, one of the north’s greatest growers, to
bottle his brilliant white Hermitage under our Exhibition label. It’s a remarkable wine from a great vintage and an iconic grower.
It’s also Marcel’s job to capture for The Society the essence of the lesser-known southern French regions, such as the Corbières and Roussillon,
and points north and west too. To qualify for the Society label, they have to be good and true examples of the unpretentious country wines that
make informal drinking so enjoyable.
REDS
The Society’s French Full Red, Côtes Catalanes
Quite rightly one of the most popular wines in our entire range.
It comes from sunkissed Roussillon and is a blend of very ripe

Aromatic grapes dominate the vineyards of this idyllic part of
eastern France and over the border in Germany. Riesling is the
noblest of them all and here we feature a racy, light-as-a-breeze

our lychee-scented Exhibition bottling is at the top of the pile.

SPAIN & PORTUGAL
Though Rioja is a region of reinvention, our heart remains
resolutely in the mellow, vanilla-tinged, blackcurrant charm of the
traditional style. Here are two such wines, one youthful, the other
demonstrating what extra time in cask and bottle can do. The
southern red is a welcome burst of Mediterranean sunshine while
the whites – classic spritzy vinho verde and mouthwatering
Galician albariño – reflect the fruits of the cooler, wetter Atlanticinfluenced north-west coast.

The Society’s Rioja Crianza
Rioja is Spain’s foremost wine region: this crianza, a quality
designation meaning it has been aged for at least 12 months in
barricas (225-litre oak barrels) before bottling, is a typical example.
It is produced by Bodegas Palacio in the heart of Rioja Alavesa at
Laguardia. The long ageing, coupled with regular racking,
encourages the beneficial contact with oxygen: this results in a
brick-red colour with a smooth, subtle palate. Good old-fashioned
Rioja: savoury red-fruit, harmonious and delicately structured. It
shone in our buyers’ Wine Champions blind tastings this year.

SPARKLING WINE & CHAMPAGNE
After more than a century of co-operation, relations between The
Society and Alfred Gratien are still fizzing. The variables involved in
the Champagne process – a complex vineyard classification
system, three grape varieties, three pressings, two fermentations
and time in the cellar – offer the option of minimising price or
maximising quality. Only the truly fortunate drink Champagne daily,
so we favour the latter option (although the savings currently
available, thanks to supplier support, do make it especially good
value at the moment). For those in need of a daily fizzical workout
our Prosecco and Crémant provide more accessible libation.

blend is equal amounts of chardonnay and chenin with a touch of
pinot noir and cabernet franc. This is an amazing-value party fizz,
which is why we named it ‘Celebration’. 12% The £2 per bottle

SHERRY, MADEIRA, PORT & WHISKY
Shipping little and often is the secret to the wonderful freshness of
our fino sherry. The oloroso is a brilliant figgy wine to match with
Christmas pud and the Madeira ideal for soft cheese and chocolate
desserts. Now more than 30 years old, the vintage port would
ensure you end your main festive event on a high. For when your
cockles need warming there’s nothing quite like a glass of our
smoky, smooth Scotch.
The Society’s Fino
Lovely bready, fragrant, appley flor character. The secret of its
success is that fino varies greatly from butt to butt and we select
only the best ones. Serve as an aperitif before dinner, or with the
meal itself: this is a wonderful foil for smoked salmon, crab or
Spanish cured ham. 15%
