When you are in that position where
you need to apply for a job and rework
your resume, it is vitally important
that you also take the correct amount
of time to ensure that the cover letter
that will accompany it is up to scratch.
Most people seem to think that
the contents of their CV is all that is
important and that the person looking
to recruit you will not even bother to
look at the letter that goes along with
it. This is a completely erroneous way
of thinking as in fact, it is the resume
cover letter that will initially get the
most attention. The reason for this is
that the resume itself will be simply a
list of what you have done in the past
and although this is important when it
comes to making the final decision, it
is also, unfortunately quite boring. It is
therefore the resume cover letter that
must stand out and grab the reader’s
attention, it is after this that the actual
resume will be studied.
Get Down And Get Personal
It is extremely important that when
writing a cover letter you try to address
the actual person who will be reading
it and do not send it to “whom it
should concern” or Head Of Human
Recourses”. If you don’t know the name
of the person to who the letter should
be addressed, spend a little time and
effort to find out. Quite often this
can be a simple matter of phoning
the company and asking the question,
whatever it takes, try to get a name.
The next thing that is essential, is
for you to find out as much about the
company as you possibly can. This
is much easier today with the use of
the internet, but don’t forget good
old fashion telephone research and
try to get some names of the heads of
department and heads of sections. In
short you want your resume cover letter

to be of interest and the best way to
achieve that is to show that you have
made an effort to find out something
about the company you are writing to.
Remember your resume cover letter
can be the most important tool that
you have and should be designed with
only one thing in mind and that is to
grab the attention of the reader, get
them to look at your resume and call
you for an interview.
You should always try to highlight in
your cover letter the reasons why you
want to apply for a position and why
you think your particular skills could
be employed in carrying out any tasks
that are required. There is a saying
along the lines of “faint heart never
won fair lady” and the same is true
when it comes to applying for a job.
Be bold and make them feel that they
should at least read your CV.
Another essential point to take on
board is that you must ensure that
your cover letter is grammatically
correct and has no spelling mistakes.
Make sure that the writing flows
and don’t go in for fancy fonts or
coloured highlighting, you are
trying to get a job not win an award for
outstanding artwork!
Lastly please remember that you
will never get a job if you don’t get
an interview and your resume cover
letter will be the one thing that will
determine that outcome. There are
numerous tools available to enable
you to compose a first class cover
letter, including books, software and
resume cover letter template tools. So
spend some time and if necessary some
money on making sure you get it right
and you will propel yourself way ahead
of any competition.

is vital to your job application, so pay
attention to the detail.
