LOCAL HELP WANTED – YORK REGION
7 Proven Ways To Earn Respect At Work
Respect is an enviable quality, which
we all want and probably deserve. But,
respect is granted only to a select few in
the workplace. Those are the ones who
manage to balance tremendous work
with office politics and communication.
Wondering how to earn respect at work?
Read on – in seven simple steps, you’ll have
the answer.
1. Learn to appreciate yourself
Respect begins with oneself. As Lao Tzu
(Ancient Chinese philosopher and poet)
said, ‘When you are content to be simply
yourself and don’t compare or compete,
everybody will respect you.’ Respecting
Page 10
and being proud of oneself will ensure that
you give people the ability to appreciate
you. Once you understand your worth, so
will others.
2. Dress, talk and walk like you deserve
to be noticed
Dress like the job you want, talk like the
professional you want to be, walk like the
whole package and one day you’ll become
everything you want. Studies show that
75% of the impressions people have of you
are developed based on the way you dress,
talk and walk. The other 25% is based on
your personality. Therefore, to earn respect
you have to dress, talk and walk like you’ve
already got it.
3. Develop a good work ethic
Indira Gandhi (4th Prime Minister of
India) once stated, “My grandfather told
me that there were two kinds of people:
those who do the work and those who
take the credit. He told me to try to be
in the first group; there was much less
competition.” The same applies at your
workplace. There may be a long line of
people who want to take credit and a much
shorter one for those who do the work. You
can guess which group earns the most
respect.
4. Communicate
No one is perfect, but if we all
understand how to showcase our talents
and achievements, everyone will respect
us. There are many people in the world
who have the ability to do something, but
by sheer lack of communication, no one
knows and no one cares. In the workplace
make sure you openly communicate to
your co-workers and superiors on a regular
basis about the things you’ve achieved
outside and inside of the workplace.
5. Learn to say no
If you want people to respect you, you
have to learn to say no, even if they are
your superiors. If you say yes to everything
people will begin to get the impression that
you can be easily manipulated and used. It
is important to prioritize your work and
show your co-workers that you have a valid
www.localhelpwanted.ca
reason for saying no. If unsure, practice
saying no to someone and try to articulate
it effectively.
6. Let go of what you can’t control
In the 21st century our lives are filled
with never-ending tasks, infinite family
and social commitments and boundless
opportunities. To put it metaphorically, life
is a patchwork quilt of mismatched squares
made with blood, sweat, tears and laughter.
With so much going on, many of us suffer
both in the workplace and at home, due
to the fact that we can’t let go of things
we can’t control. We tend to obsess over
these and make problems out of nothing.
Understanding this concept early on is
important in ensuring that we live fulfilled
lives and earn respect.
7. Live by your morals, values, and
ethics
People respect those who have a clear
objective in mind and can make decisions
quickly with a beneficial outcome.
Although not always feasible, this can be
acquired by first developing your morals,
values, and ethics and then living by them.
To do this, consider what is important to
you, what issues you are passionate about
and where you stand on controversial
problems.
Remember: Treat people the way you want
to be treated. Talk to people the way you
want to be talked to. Respect is earned, not
given.

4 Attainable Skills To Add To Your Resume
Students: take advantage of
tax credits and benefits
(NC) Post-secondary education is
expensive. Every semester starts with
paying tuition and buying textbooks.
You may need a new laptop and school
supplies – and don’t forget about all the
coffee you’ll need to survive the allnighters cramming for exams. These
costs can pile up which may push you
to sift through the couch cushions for
all the coins you can find. The solution?
Even though you may not have any
income to report, you may be able to
take advantage of some tax savings to
put some money back in your pocket.
Here are a few tips to help you out:
File your taxes
To take advantage of the tax credits
and benefits available to you, such as
the GST/HST credit, you have to file
your taxes. Do it online – there’s a wide
range of software, including some that’s
free.
Sign up for direct deposit
When you combine online filing
with direct deposit into your bank
account, you can get your refund in as
little as eight business days.
Page 12
Claim your tax credits
• Tuition fees – Most tuition paid to
a post-secondary institution in Canada
can be claimed. You may also be able
to transfer or carry-forward any unused
credits.
• Education amount – You can claim
$400 for each month you are enrolled
in eligible full-time studies and $120 for
each month you are enrolled in eligible
part-time studies.
• Textbook amount – If you are eligible
for the education amount, you can
claim this too. You can claim $65 for
each month you are enrolled in fulltime studies, and $20 for each month
you are enrolled in part time studies.
• Public transit amount – Generally
speaking, you can claim the amount
you spent on a monthly public transit
pass, but not tickets or daily passes.
• GST/HST credit – You can get
payment of up to $70 every three
months to help you keep on top of your
expenses.
You can find more information for
students at www.cra.gc.ca/students.
and fill your blog with well-written and
clever posts about things that interest
you, highlighting your strengths.
Interview committees often check out
blogs, and if your blog is professional
and includes some great writing, they
will be sure to be impressed with your
abilities. Blogger and WordPress both
offer free platforms for blog hosting.
Consider Getting a Commercial
Driver’s License
Chances are good you already have
a regular driver’s license. In order to
make yourself qualified for a multitude
of positions, you may wish to also earn
your commercial driver’s license, or
CDL for short. Obtaining a CDL has
many benefits. People who have one
are able to drive trucks, buses and
other commercial vehicles. In addition,
it also shows a potential boss that you
have taken the time to learn a new
and very useful skill, and if a business
relies on drivers in any way, even for
the company van, it might give you the
edge in an interview. You can study for
the CDL test and take practice tests
online at no charge. Then take the
CDL exam once you are ready.
Become Certified in First Aid
Including a first aid certification
on your résumé is definitely a positive

thing. Many companies require that
employees have this training, and it
also helps you come across as a person
who goes the extra mile to learn
important and valuable skills. To find
an upcoming class in your area, you
can go through the American Red
Cross website, and it might also be
possible to find an online course that
is free or extremely low cost. While the
American Red Cross classes can range
in price from around $70 to $100,
depending on which course you take
and where you live, it can be a great
investment if it helps you land a terrific
job.
Learn to Use Microsoft Office
Products
If you are trying to get a job in
an administrative or office-type
environment, showing that you are
knowledgeable in Microsoft Office
tools can make or break a job interview.
Microsoft offers a course that will
certify you as a Microsoft Office
Specialist, which is a great asset to
add to your CV. You can select which
products you wish to learn more about,
and then specialize in those particular
tools. Like the First Aid certification,
while there is a charge for the tests, it is
definitely money well spent.

Start a Blog
As Intern Match notes, one of the
best ways to help your résumé shine is to
start a blog. In addition to highlighting
your great abilities as a writer — as
well as your other marketable skills and
talents — it can also be shared with a
wide range of people. Once you create a
blog, include a link to it on your résumé,

While you have some job experiences
that are definitely marketable, you
might be wondering if you can add any
new certifications and skills to help
you stand out in a field of applicants.

How To Choose The Right
Education For Career Growth
Whether you are looking to move
up or move on in your career, further
education is often a necessity. While
many people tend to find a career to fit
their education, it may make more sense
to do the reverse. If you’re dissatisfied
with your current career and looking
for a change it is especially important
to make sure you are doing everything
you can to set yourself up for future
success. If that involves furthering your
education, you want to make sure the
education you’re getting is furthering
your personal and professional goals.
Wondering how to choose the right
education for your career aspirations?
Here are some tips to turn your higher
education into a get hired education.
Weighing Degree vs. Demand
Many people have the misconception
that an advanced degree means career
advancement. While it is true that
many companies are less particular
about your educational emphasis, there
are certainly majors that employers
value more highly. It has been well
documented that companies value an
MBA degree, but there are other skills
that are in high demand.
It is projected that in the near
future, demand for psychology majors
will increase significantly. In fact, the
very companies that are tasked with
job placement are looking to hire
psychology majors to work as recruiters.
This is largely due to the emphasis
companies are placing on soft skills and
emotional intelligence. Their insight
into an individual’s mental makeup is
tremendously valuable in identifying
and placing prospective employees.
It is important to keep track of political
and economic trends when planning
your future career. Current and future
policies can have a tremendous impact
on demand and the viability of your
career going forward. Keep that long
Jan. 24 – Feb. 7, 2015
term picture in mind when planning
your educational trajectory. Things
like the recent healthcare legislation
and the subsequent rise in domain for
healthcare professionals are the type of
macroeconomic events that can make
or break your career prospects.
Getting the Skills you Need to Succeed
While at times it makes sense to
acquire training in a very specific
skill set, the majority of employers
actually prefer employees with a broad
knowledge set. Educational institutions
feel that they are preparing students to
contribute in a broad array of activities,
but students, more often than not, do
not feel adequately prepared. There are
several ways to combat this. One is to
choose an educational program that
provides hands-on training. Very few
institutions offer this sort of practical
approach to education, but the ones
that do inspire confidence in their
graduates that they can perform the
necessary job functions they will be
tasked with.
There are a variety of other factors
that go into choosing an educational
focus that matches up with your career
ambitions, but the primary skills that
are important to learn are how to
work effectively on a variety of tasks,
work well with others and adapt to
new situations. It can be difficult to
acquire these skills in an educational
setting, but I would encourage you to
place yourself in a situation where you
are forced to utilize and develop these
practical and emotional skills.
It can be a monumental task to
both find a career that embraces
both practicality and passion. While
I certainly can’t speak to what will
make you happy in your employment,
hopefully these tips will help you on
your way to a long and fruitful career.

What is HACCP
HACCP is an internationally
recognized system used to enhance
food safety throughout the food chain.
More and more companies around the
world are using HACCP to prevent,
reduce or eliminate potential food
safety hazards, including those caused
by cross-contamination.
The development of a HACCP system
involves:
•identifying potential hazards
•implementing control measures at
specific points in the process
•monitoring and verifying that
the control measures are working
as intended
Why HACCP?
Compared to traditional inspection
procedures, HACCP:
•Provides a systematic approach to
ensuring food safety
•Gives more control over food safety
to the processor
•Is based on science, rather than
simply past experience or subjective
judgment
•Focuses on preventing problems
before they occur. This approach
yields far better results than trying to
detect failures through end-product
testing
www.localhelpwanted.ca
What are the main elements of a
HACCP system?
1.Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs)
2. HACCP plans
What principles does HACCP follow?
1.Conduct a Hazard Analysis
2.Determine the Critical Control
Points
3.Establish Critical Limits
4.Establish Monitoring Procedures
5.Establish Corrective Actions
6.Establish Verification Procedures
7.Establish Record-Keeping and
Documentation Procedures
Who is the HACCP trainer in GTA ?
Ontario College of Technology has
been providing HACCP training for
