TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST
All Saints Sunday
We learned about gratitude and humility - that so many people had a hand in our
success, from the teachers who inspired us to the janitors who kept our school clean...
and we were taught to value everyone's contribution and treat everyone with respect.

One:
When we stand at the edge of fear and worry,
Many:
God invites us to step into the waters of faith and trust.
One:
When we stand at the edge of the world's pain and need,
Many:
Jesus invites us to step into the land of humble service.
One:
When we stand at the edge of our hunger and thirst:
Many:
the Spirit invites us to the feast of God’s love.
Please remain standing for our opening hymn.

*HYMN
Come, O Fount of Every Blessing
3
*OPENING PRAYER
ALL:
God in Community, Holy in One, as we draw near to you in this time,
we lift the prayer you have taught us, saying…
*THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
*THE PASSING OF THE PEACE
One:
Friends, this is a place of welcome for all. May we express that welcome
as we greet one another saying, “The peace of Christ be with you.”
Many:
And also with you.
You are invited to share the peace or words of welcome with those around you.
All children toddlers through 12th grade wishing to attend Sunday School are invited to

THE SCRIPTURE READING
Matthew 23:1-12
Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples, ‘The scribes and the Pharisees sit on
Moses’ seat; therefore, do whatever they teach you and follow it; but do not do as they
do, for they do not practice what they teach. They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear, and
lay them on the shoulders of others; but they themselves are unwilling to lift a finger to
move them. They do all their deeds to be seen by others; for they make their phylacteries
broad and their fringes long. They love to have the place of honor at banquets and the
best seats in the synagogues, and to be greeted with respect in the market-places, and to
have people call them rabbi. But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher,
and you are all students. And call no one your creator on earth, for you have one
Creator—the one in heaven. Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one
instructor, the Messiah. The greatest among you will be your servant. All who exalt
themselves will be humbled, and all who humble themselves will be exalted.
Friends, listen. God is still speaking.
Thanks be to God.

ALL SAINTS DAY REMEMBRANCE
READING OF NAMES AND LIGHTING OF MEMORIAL CANDLES
CHORAL RESPONSE
Things that Never Die
arr. Lee Dengler
Text by Charles Dickens (1812 – 1870)
The pure, the bright, the beautiful that stirred our hearts in youth,
the impulses to wordless prayer.
The streams of love and truth, the longing after something lost.
The spirit’s yearning cry, the striving after better hopes; these things shall never die.
The timid hand stretched forth to aid a sister in her need;
A kindly word in grief’s dark hour that proves a friend indeed;
The plea for mercy softly breathed, when justice threatens high,
The sorrow of a contrite heart; these things shall never die.
Let nothing pass, for every hand must find some work to do,
Lose not a chance to waken love; be firm and just and true.
So shall a light that cannot fade beam on thee from on high,
And angel voices say to thee, “These things shall never die.”
We kindly ask for no applause following the Choral Response
PRAYER OF REMEMBRANCE
One:
In the rising of the sun and in its going down,
we remember them.
Many:
In the blowing of the wind and in the chill of winter,
we remember them.
One:
In the opening of buds and in the rebirth of spring,
we remember them.
Many:
In the blueness of the sky and the warmth of summer,
we remember them.
One:
In the rustling of the leaves and the beauty of autumn,
we remember them.
Many:
At the beginning of the year and when it ends,
we remember them.
6
One:
Many:
One:
Many:
When we are weary and in need of strength,
we remember them.
When we are lost and sick at heart, we remember them.
When we have joys we yearn to share, we remember them.
So long as we live, they too will live, for they are now part
of us, as we remember them.
*CLOSING HYMN
For All the Saints
7
*THE SENDING FORTH
One:
Go now, in the freedom of the gospel of Christ.
Encourage one another to lead lives worthy of God’s grace
and walk together in service and humility.
And may the God of lasting love open the way before us;
May Jesus the Example be our instructor;
And may the Holy Spirit lead us on
into the promised land of God’s glory.
ALL:
We go in peace to love and serve God.

CELEBRATE MARTINSTAG
Our German church community cordially invites all children age kindergarten through
fifth grade and their parents to participate in a very special German tradition called
Martinstag, or St. Martin’s Day. This occasion is named after St. Martin, who is said to
have shared his heavy cloak with a beggar in need of some warmth. Thus was born the
tradition of children carrying lanterns around on the feast of the saint in honor of this
noble deed. On Friday evening, November 7, from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. in Aunt
Mollie’s House (the Youth House at 1207 Malaga Avenue), the children are invited to
make their own lantern to light the way for St. Martin. Cost is $5.00 per lantern. Light
refreshments will be served.
Then on Tuesday evening, November 11, from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m., the children,
their parents, and interested others are invited to commemorate Martinstag. The
festivities begin in the Sanctuary with a short play. Following which, a processional will
take place around the church with lanterns and the singing of traditional German songs.
The evening ends back in the Fellowship Hall as all the children receive a Breadman, a
traditional German treat. Cost is $4.00 per Breadman.
In order to ensure that there are enough supplies, all children must pre-register for the
lantern-making evening on November 7 and/or the play and lantern walk on November
11. Please contact Pastor Megan at [email protected] to register.
ECCLESIASTICAL COUNCIL
Sunday, November 9 at 3:00 p.m.
An Ecclesiastical Council is an official gathering of laity and clergy from local UCC
congregations for the purpose of authorizing a candidate for ordination as a minister in
the United Church of Christ. On Sunday, November 9 at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel, we
are so pleased to have church member Yosladis (Yoly) Izquierdo-Yglesias come before
us and share her faith pilgrimage, theology, and her understanding of the United Church
of Christ. Following her presentation, those present will determine Yoly’s fitness for
ordained ministry. Born and raised in Cuba, Yoly has a compelling story of commitment
10
and devotion to her Christian faith in spite of many trials and struggles. This is an
important occasion in the life of our church and all members of the congregation are
encouraged to attend.
CIRCLES OF DIALOGUE
November 8, 9, & 22
Sponsored by the Board of Justice and Witness, Circles of Dialogue is designed to
promote stimulating dialogue while enjoying food and drink with friends who are
willing to learn and dialogue about a pressing justice issue. This year, the Circles of
Dialogue are about the immigration and refugee issues that our nation can no longer
afford to ignore. To sign up, visit the Justice and Witness Table in the Fellowship
Hall after Sunday worship or contact Meribeth Shank at [email protected].
PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY
Monday, November 10 at 7:00 p.m. in the Library
We gather to create beautiful prayer shawls to share with members of our church family
who are ill or grieving or maybe even celebrating a special event. You do not have to
know how to knit or crochet – someone will teach you. If you are looking for a ministry
of prayer and care for others, this may be it. Come and help wrap someone in God’s love
by creating a beautiful prayer shawl.
SISTERS ON SOJOURN

other’s stories, provide support and encouragement, and to occasionally learn something.
This month, we are looking forward to welcoming back our Muslim sisters for a
conversation around women and faith. A continental breakfast is provided, so roll out of
bed, throw on your jeans, and be with some sisters on the journey.

Thursday, December 4; the Church Shuttle leaves at 9:30 a.m.
All our spirited and adventurous seniors (55 years old and above…or frankly,
anyone) are invited to join us for an outing at the beautiful Bonnet House Museum
and Gardens in Ft. Lauderdale. Built in 1920 and listed on the National Register of
Historic Places, Bonnet House Museum & Gardens is a 35-acre estate and historic
house museum. Following a guided tour of the Main House, we will take a tram tour
of the grounds which boast a mangrove swamp and coastal hammock providing
habitat for a variety of fish, birds, and other wildlife. We will enjoy a box lunch on
the estate. This is an easy tour. Walking isn’t difficult. The cost for the outing and
lunch is just $20. Sign up after worship each Sunday at the XYZ table or by
contacting Drew Sandbulte at 305.448.7421 ext. 150 or [email protected].
LET’S GO TO THE THEATRE
Miracle on South Division Street
Sunday, December 7 at 3:00 p.m. at The Actor’s Playhouse
ONLY A FEW TICKETS REMAIN!
12
Fresh from its Off-Broadway run, Miracle on South Division Street is the story of the
Nowak family living amidst the urban rubble of Buffalo, New York’s East Side. Clara,
the family matriarch, happily runs her kitchen and tends to the family heirloom, a twentyfoot shrine of the Blessed Mother, which adjoins the house. This beacon commemorated
the day in 1942 that the Virgin Mary appeared to her father at his home-based
barbershop. During the course of this very funny and original play, the entire family’s
faith is shaken to the core as the family legend seems to be unraveling. The afternoon’s
results are heartfelt and hilarious. Great seats are available at $30 by contacting Drew
Sandbulte at [email protected]. You are also invited to take the shuttle from church.
It will leave promptly at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are limited, so get yours soon!
FAMILY PROMISE
Monday Evening, November 17 at 7:00 p.m. in Havighorst Lounge
A mother loses her job, a father is kept from working by an injury, a family is forced
from their home by fire or natural disaster. Healthcare costs soar, public transportation is
underfunded, affordable housing is almost impossible to find. These are the reasons why
families now make up 40 percent of the homeless population, and why one out of every
four homeless people is a child. In response to this crisis, a national organization called
Family Promise seeks to bring the faith community together to help families regain their
housing, their independence, and their dignity.
Family Promise has more than 160,000 volunteers from coast to coast helping to keep
homeless families intact as they work to get back on their feet. These resources include
available congregational spaces, donated goods, and - most importantly - volunteers. The
success rate for clients of Family Promise is outstanding with nearly 80 percent of clients
securing housing.
While there are Family Promise affiliates throughout Florida, there is none in MiamiDade County. Through the commitment of many members and friends of Gables UCC
we have taken the lead in establishing an affiliate here in our area with the assistance of
the local interfaith community. It is an exciting and hope-filled project that joins with
6,500 congregations across the country in working toward a nation in which every family
has a home, a livelihood, and the chance to build a better future together.
On Monday evening, November 17, at 7:00 p.m. in Havighorst Lounge you are invited
to attend another organizational meeting for Family Promise and hear about how Gables
UCC and the larger interfaith community of South Florida can be engaged in this
important ministry. Even if you haven’t attended a meeting before, it is not too late to be
part of the organizing team. If you have further questions, please contact Pastor Laurie or
13
Drew Sandbulte, who is our congregation’s liaison to Family Promise, during this time of
development and dreaming.
CANNED FOOD NEEDED
Almost every day, individuals and families from around the city come to our church
seeking help. The number one need is food. Jesus spoke more about feeding the hungry
than anything else. So as a church, we need to help provide for our hungry brothers and
sisters. Could you please help? You may drop off food items at the receptionist desk
where they will help fill our food pantry and the stomachs of those in need. Especially
needed are pull-top cans of fruit, vegetables, soup, tuna fish as well as cereal, mac and
cheese, peanut butter and jelly, rice, beans, spaghetti and sauce, and crackers. We would
also appreciate plastic or cloth grocery bags. Thank you!
