“Musts” for Spiritual Victory
Romans 6:11 HCSB So, you too consider yourselves dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ

1. We must reckon ourselves to be dead to sin and alive to God.

2. We must not allow sin to reign in our mortal bodies.
 Romans 6:12-13 HCSB Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, so that you
obey its desires. (13) And do not offer any parts of it to sin as weapons for
unrighteousness...
3. We must yield ourselves to God (cf. Romans 12:1-2).
 Romans 6:13 HCSB And do not offer any parts of it to sin as weapons for
unrighteousness. But as those who are alive from the dead, offer yourselves to God,
and all the parts of yourselves to God as weapons for righteousness.
 Romans 6:16 HCSB Do you not know that if you offer yourselves to someone as
obedient slaves, you are slaves of that one you obey--either of sin leading to death or
of obedience leading to righteousness?
 Romans 6:19 HCSB I am using a human analogy because of the weakness of your
flesh. For just as you offered the parts of yourselves as slaves to moral impurity, and
to greater and greater lawlessness, so now offer them as slaves to righteousness,
which results in sanctification.
4. We must walk after the Spirit.
 Romans 8:1 HCSB Therefore, no condemnation now exists for those in Christ Jesus,
 Galatians 5:16-26 HCSB I say then, walk by the Spirit and you will not carry out the
desire of the flesh. (17) For the flesh desires what is against the Spirit, and the Spirit
desires what is against the flesh; these are opposed to each other, so that you don't do
what you want. (18) But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. (19)
Now the works of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, moral impurity, promiscuity,
(20) idolatry, sorcery, hatreds, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambitions,
dissensions, factions, (21) envy, drunkenness, carousing, and anything similar, about
which I tell you in advance--as I told you before--that those who practice such things
will not inherit the kingdom of God. (22) But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace,
patience, kindness, goodness, faith, (23) gentleness, self-control. Against such things
there is no law. (24) Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh
with its passions and desires. (25) If we live by the Spirit, we must also follow the
Spirit. (26) We must not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one
another.
5. We must be filled with the Spirit (Romans 15:13).
 Ephesians 5:18 HCSB And don't get drunk with wine, which leads to reckless actions,
but be filled with the Spirit:

a. The basis for true obedience.
The prophet Ezekiel predicted this time saying:
 Ezekiel 11:19-20 HCSB And I will give them one heart and put a new spirit within
them; I will remove their heart of stone from their bodies and give them a heart of
flesh, (20) so they may follow My statutes, keep My ordinances, and practice them.
Then they will be My people, and I will be their God.
 Ezekiel 36:26-27 HCSB I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I
will remove your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. (27) I will place My
Spirit within you and cause you to follow My statutes and carefully observe My
ordinances.



Galatians 5:22-23 HCSB But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience,
kindness, goodness, faith, (23) gentleness, self-control. Against such things there is
no law.
c. The basis of true joy.
Romans 15:13 HCSB Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in
believing, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
